How I Started Making Games with No Experience

  • So, I'm Thomas Brush, a full-time indie game developer. I started learning how to animate in Flash because I wanted to express myself without having to be in a room with more than two people due to my social anxiety. It was tough to overcome my fears, but I was determined to pursue my passion for game development.
Eventually, I learned to create games using Unity and began marketing my games to secure six-figure funding on Kickstarter. It was an exciting moment for me and gave me the confidence to keep pushing myself and my games further.
Now, I'm proud to say that I've created a successful online school called Full-Time Game Dev, where I teach people how to become full-time indie game developers. It's rewarding to share my knowledge and experience with others who are just starting in this field.
Overall, it's been a challenging but fulfilling journey, and I'm excited to see where the future of game development takes me.

Can you make a video on validating game ideas and competitor analysis? Using twitter as as a gauge and steamspy are pretty faulty ways to accurately come to a decision; one’s an echo chamber and the other simply gives inaccurate readings of player count

At some point every game dev had no experience, they just started doing it! Video game creation is such a good example of a hobby you can commercialise. As long as you get into it from a place of passion, and not just chasing cash, there’s so much you can do by yourself or as part of a larger studio.

My personal story starts when I was a kid. Always playing games (which came to bite me in the ass later so I stopped). There was also that Nickelodeon show, Game Shakers, about some kids "making" games.
Around that time I tried Roblox dev, did not even think that it was gamedev. Fast forward, 2019 got my pc. Started playing Fortnite, and the game that changed my life both ways, Ark Survival Evolved. I used to watch the game and thought it was amazing, still do. So later in the year, started Unity Gamedev.
    My main phylosophy was:
There is a tutorial for everything so why learn coding
Matter of fact I didn't even know you can learn coding or idk what it was.
    So that failed.
Fast forward to 2022, I got onto self improvement, and started considering the financial side of it. So I was like programming, and then it clicked.
    Gamedev.
At the time I had a weird view of it, thinking I will learn it and then make games, wtf was wrong with me, but anyways.
I started learning C# for Unity.
I did it for like 3 months and then,
    I started "learning"
I met a person who is also a Gamedev, and he suggested I don't do the braindead thing I was going to.
January the 20th 2023, after getting with some friends, started our gamedev studio. And now, im 13.
    In conclusion:
Any dumbass like me can start, but not everyone can stay and not quit.
    Edit:
Shameless promo, you can find us on itch.io, twitter, instagram, discord and tiktok under DwarvenStudios.

I've wanted to make my own games since I was in high school but I was always afraid of what people would think of them. I've made some prototypes and even participate in a game jam but I've never had enough confidence to take an idea all the way. Eventually, I decided working in the games industry was good enough so now I work as a producer at a small indie studio but I still have the urge to make something I'm truly passionate about. Wow Thomas! You really have come so far! I remember the first time I watched Jacksepticeye play Pinstripe, and I instantly wanted to learn game development. So I started learning C# and watched way to many Brakeys tutorials. But this was about 6 years ago, where am I now? Well, I totally lost all interest in game dev, and went back to just playing games. I tried getting back into it a few times, but it never resulted in anything good. In fact, I had only made 1 game at that point, and it was pretty bad. But one day, I was watching some UA-cam, and I saw a little game called Once upon a Coma, and I was instantly hooked. When I found out it was made by the same person who made the game that motivated me to begin game dev, I knew I had to try this game. Then I saw Jacksepticeye play it, and WOW, I couldn't stop thinking about it. So all that to say, thank you for everything, I've been watching your channel ever since, and continue to learn. I am now working on a huge project that has come so far. Thank you again :)

I began my personal journey into the world of making games 2 years ago. I started out by writing a story for a poorly made visual novel for the SBIG jam (So Bad It’s Good jam) of 2021. That sparked something in me. Immediately after I tried another jam but solo. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to submit a game since I spent so long trying to learn how to make character art, but that began a personal project for me with a story idea I love. I’ve been slowly getting ideas for the game, however it kind of fell flat. I have so many game ideas, but I don’t know how to go about making them. This past month I was able to get back into game jams. I’ve built a little bit of a portfolio with some writing samples since 2021. I joined the Adventure Jam and created a small demo of a platformer that is very story heavy. The people I worked with and I have agreed to continue working on the game because it has such a good story with unique gameplay. As of right now I decided to try my hand at game art so I can build skills for when I continue one of my many personal projects. Sometimes I look at other people’s games and think “Man what I’m making is kinda weird” or “I wish my game looked that good”. This video motivated me to work harder, and to keep making short little games that have odd stories. Thank you

I’m a writer fundamentally, and I have these ideas for stories that I believe would be best told through a video game.
When I tell you I have no experience, I mean I barely even play video games. But I want to learn so I can create my vision in the best way possible.
For a long time I was scared to do things that were “outside of my skill level” as though the point isn’t to improve over time. If you want to make video games because you want to be a video game designer, that’s really awesome. And if you want to make video games because you think it would be fun, that’s cool too.

Thank you. I have been working on my first indie game on and off half-assed for 4 years now. It’s not really something I’m proud of so it’s hard to put time into it and finish it. It started off as a small project with a buddy of mine because “haha funny” and then we just added waaaaay too much. I’d love to finish it and make a game I’m actually passionate about. Thanks for motivating me to release my cringe game so I can finally get SOMETHING out there and get some experience before moving onto worthwhile stuff.
Basically it’s a top-down 2D game where you run around a house eating as much food, and smoking as much weed as possible, all while trying to avoid your parents. I'm a full time professional enterprise app developer, looking for a right moment to do a switch into gaming industry... Game development sound exciting to me but I have lots of doubts about it.

I am a therapist at the youth detention center in omaha nebraska. I'm not good at drawing or animation but I would like to partner with someone who is and work on a therapeutic virtual reality game for the youth at my facility.

Hey! Thomas, I'm a 3d artist and currently I'm working as a 3d instructor at an Institute. I've also woked in a gaming Studio cuz I always wanted to make videogames. And I've been trying to make a game for around 2 years but I still see no progress. I don't know how to code and how to start. Please share your thoughts...

Just noticed the shot behind you is from one of my favorite movies Spirited Away. Something about that scene really resonates with me. Is that true to you too?

I've had a similar attitude with making UA-cam videos. Some of them are going to be a bit bad and possibly cringe, but I just have to get over it and be ok with it.

Hey Thomas, I am in the Full Time Game Dev Programme. Could I use the art that you show in the course... what I mean by that is, could I make a website, twitter, etc with the art that we are using in the Full Time Game Dev programme. I'm planning on using the art that we are making and not changing anything. So thats why I'm asking if i could use it. Thanks in advance!

So if I wanted to just start a project almost 100% from no knowledge about game and world creation. Where would I start. I'm not looking into making a big profit over what I create. I just want to make something. Something to take time and keep me interested in. Something to let me give to a community. I just want to create with almost no imagination. So where can I start.
