I watched this game on tv in '97. I was 10 years old. 90s baseball was the best era. So many classic players. It will never be like that again.
Was 20.. but agree this was the best. Loved baseball back then
I was 11 man those where the days
Cap
RIP Tony Gwynn
RIP Gwynn, Ken Caminiti, Daryl Kyle, Don Zimmer, and probably more.
Yep there is more Rod Beck is another person who is sadly dead.
Crazy we (Seattle) at one time had the 2-5 hitters. What a team we had
Oh and the starting pitcher
Of the nine batters in each league's starting line-up, 5 are Hall Of Famers. Both starting pitchers are also in the Hall Of Fame.
For us in Puerto Rico this 1997 ASG was one of a kind. We have 5 players with plaques in Cooperstown and three of them, Edgar Martínez, Iván Rodríguez and Roberto Alomar, were part of the AL starting line-up.
The winning pitcher José Rosado is puertorrican, as well as the players who produced (drove in &/or scored) all the runs in the game: Javier López (NL) and Edgar hit solo shots, and the game's MVP Sandy Alomar Jr hit another HR with Bernie Williams on base to decide the contest. Unforgettable !!! ⚾
RIP Ken Caminiti
Philip Abbate and Tony Gwynn
And Darryl Kile
Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez & Mariano Rivera. What a lineup of legendary pitchers.
Good thing Cleveland didn't boo Lofton, at least they understood they traded him for Grissom which worked well since Lofton returned the next year.
Matt Scott Exactly If Lofton Stayed And Grissom We Would've Been Stacked Up And Won The Series Just Like 1995 One Matter Of Fact I Wish I Could Go Back To Time As A Die Hard Indians Fan Since The 90s
we would never ever ever boo Lofton
@MANCHESTER UNITED be quiet
Go Cleveland
Lofton is a Cleveland Indians legend and should be in the Hall of Fame
1997 MLB All Star game represents the contribution of Puerto Rico to the American pastime. All 4 runs of the game, 3 from the American League and 1 from the National League were score and batted in by puertoricans. Also the winning pitcher was from PR. One of the greatest day in the memories of all Puerto Rico baseball players in the history of the game.
duke harden triggered!!!
because a minority succeeding in this country is always going to be more of a feel good story than a white person succeeding. People of those minorities have a right to feel more excited to see their culture thriving and represented by someone successful. When a white person succeeds, well they are the majority and they are the ones who have the greatest control of the society, so there's really nothing remarkable about the fact that they are white. It can still be a feel good story because of that white person's journey or individual circumstances, but the white people of the media do not have the same obligation to cover white athletes as minorities do, at the same time, it's also not racist for minorities to provide favorable coverage as long as they are still respectful of white athletes (and other minorities) in the process. The system, not so much in sports, but in American society, is set up to favor white people.
RGC forgot to thank Jackie Robinson, Walter O'malley and a whole lot of others to make baseball truly American. To blow any 'horn' any more isn't racist, but totally ridiculous and selfish. What a Dick!
Well at least Puerto Rico finally gas something to be proud of.
Back when the Milwaukee Brewers were an AL team. Miss those days.
RIP Tony Gwynn and Ken Caminiti, and Larry Walker should be in the Hall.
Jon Martinez He is now!
Man it seems to me Baseball use to be more fun and light hearted back then. Now pitchers get a stick up there butt if you show any emotion about a home run.
I feel like if Ray Langford did a huge bat flip in front of randy johnson he would for sure get hit the next at bat.
What was Cleveland's beef with Albert? Did they expect him to take less money to stay in Cleveland???
7:45 Belle looks like he was hurt. What made it worse was that they stood him next to Sandy. Kinda feel for Belle, TBH.
I don't blame him. He played there for eight years and couldn't get more than 5.5M. He had to worry about his future after baseball, that's why he took the 10M for Chicago, not to screw over Cleveland.
He did it again! He did it again
Three teams with some nice uniforms they shouldn't have ditched - Astros, Angels, and Blue Jays. Brewers, not so much.
Nah the Angels were hideous the blue sleeves and pin strips. Glad they ditched those back with the A with a halo but with more red than blue what they have today funny first year they ditched those Jersey's they went on to win the Worlds Series.
Angels unis weren't bad, it's out of place. The A with the halo is the franchise.
Don't forget the Marlins. I loved that visiting uniform. They should have never changed colors.
Wow… 2-3-4-5 as A-Rod, Griffey, Tino and Edgar… and then Randy Johnson starting. Imagine if Tino had stayed in Seattle.
HOMETOWN HERO, GOODBYE
- Little did anyone realize that Sandy Alomar's HR & MVP performance in this All Star Game would ignite a 2nd-half surge by Cleveland in 1997 in which Alomar would come up with a wave of clutch hits for the Tribe down the stretch and into the postseason.... :)
1997 was Sandy Alomar's best season ever, He was the Indians true leader MVP of the All-Star Game and MVP of the ALCS as he led the Indians to their second pennant and World Series in three years.
@@ProfessorBMedia Great year for Alomar and the Indians. We should have beaten the Marlins.
Cleveland Indians 1997 AL Champions
The most notable being a game tying 2 run home run off of Mariano Rivera in the ALDS
Lost in ws so who cares
I was at that game. Stadium was 3 years old. Stadium is now 43 years old and it looks as good as it did then.
This was the beginning of the American League dominating the National League in the Mid-Summer Classic between 1997-2009 by going 12-0-1 in the next 13 years.
And the AL continues to dominate today since 2014.
26:24 back when baseball was baseball and even the pitchers rocked a cup.
Nomar Garciaparra, wow that brings me back that's a name I haven't heard in forever.
woulda been way better than Jeter if he stayed healthy
Ken Caminiti and Ken Griffey Jr. may have been the last players to wear an alternate jersey in an All-Star Game. It's strictly home white vs. road gray these days.
😳... Time flies....
Great memories 😎 1997 ASG.
Interleague play debuted in the 1997 season ⚾
Esos juegos si eran juegos con grandes estrellas y salón de la fama único me encantan sus arreglos y ceremonias.
By that time, the NL never had a principals figure as a SS, Jeff blawser was a regular player, not an all star player
Mark McGwire would be traded to the Cardinals at the trading deadline.
2021 watching this 👍👍
Those angels jerseys were awesome
Yicccch.
I find it ironic that in this particular all-star game Randy Johnson, Mark Grace, Tony Womack, Steve Finley, and Curt Schilling would find themselves teammates on the Diamondbacks together in 2001 and win a world series championship.
Jajajajaja como olvidar ese lanzamiento de randy Johnson, ante Larry Walker, esa es la repeticion del 93.
only the mariners can have all those HOF''s and not win a world series..
Watching Kevin Brown Now.. knowing Marlins win the World series, then he comes to the Padres '98 and goes to the World series again.. and has a killer year there..!
Kevin Brown was filthy back then.
damn him for beating my team in 97 but he's definitely a fringe hall of fame guy. he honestly held his own among the all time greats for awhile
7:45
albert bell
Drew Carey sitting behind home plate
shapez73 oh shit good eye man
At one point
A rod
Griffey
Tino
Edgar
Were all on the same team ......
Brady Anderson!
Paul O Neill and ARod not exchanging pregame handshakes is interesting
This all star game is unique, in that it’s very realistic and very competitive
37:45 Right on cue after the flashback, Randy Johnson strikes again! lol
+flames24lightning I've never heard Tim Mccarver laugh this hard ever.
What a lot of people may not know was that about a month before the all star game, Walker's Colorado Rockies played at Seattle and in one of the games Randy Johnson was the starting pitcher. Walker sat out that game that Johnson started purely out of the fact that he didn't want to bat against the Big Unit. I know this and remember this because I attended that game. So it actually didn't surprise me at all when this happened. If anything, it was hilarious.
The greatest game
The best part with the most dominant right hander pitcher in MLB (Pedro Martínez) 1:37:07
So many 01 ws champs pre d backs players
Did anyone notice AROD and Griffey wearing two diff versions of home uniform for the same team? I actually wonder if this was allowed or no one noticed at all...
Pete Rose did this in the 1979 game in Seattle.
As an old school person this gives me the chills.
It's like another universe compared to 2020/21
If there is a rendition of our National Anthem to pick as the best, that represents the love of America then and today, then there is no better than Leanne’s rendition.
1:39.; I remember watching this game from beginning to end, but, with Kenny Lofton, how come he couldn't play although he was in the line-up, again?
I think I heard about it on TV, but, it was a long time ago & since then, I completely forgot the reason why he didn't play.
tthomaselli2 Lofton was injured at the time and Ray Lankford took his place in the roster.
Tim McArver deserved better than Joe Buck. We all did
Awesome all star lineups on both sides- except for NL STARTING SS Jeff Blauser. WTF is that?
He was starting for Barry Larkin due to injury
6:58 I personally met him and got an autographed baseball from him.
The lineups were just full of old, current and future New York Yankees.
I believe this was the only game Barry Bonds ever played in Cleveland
Back when the braves werent a joke
I like the catcher cams. I was wondering what those big black boxes were on the sides of the catchers mask at first. They didn't explain what they are until 1:28:15
The first 7 in the NL lineup 😲
You couldn't get a ticket to this stadium until maybe 2002-2003 cuz it stayed packed 😂😂
Funny then the Brewers where in the American League and Astros were in the National League now it's vice versa.
Brian C the brewers moved to the national league in the same year
Courtney Gibson Jr they moved to the national league in 1998 when the Devil Rays now Rays became an expansion team to make room for them. The Astros moved from the national league central to American League west in 2013 since the national league central had 6 teams and American League west had 4 they needed to make it balanced the number of teams in each division also the Texas Rangers are in the AL west and Houston is in the same state so it makes sense now they are cross state rivals.
Brian C that is correct
He did it again he did it again
How come Kurt Schilling isn't in the HOF? Did he have some scandals or something?
1:37:08 Pedro Martinez Start
1:41:26 Mark Mcgwire
Bonds Belle my best baseball players.
This game is just the Mariners
Alex Rodriguez 😍😍😍the best ss ever
Leandro Tejeda maybe with the bat, but just average fielding skills.
Nah Derek Jeter was better.
@@mkdzr72 no way he was very good with the glove too 🤣
50:08 - Gee, I wonder why!?!?!
Oh the steroid era at the beginning. Good times.
"Let the children have their way, let the children play."
The good old days. Back when people did their steroids in secret like gentlemen
Why is Caminiti wearing the alternate jersey?
I remember reading that they just wanted to mix it up. The Padres had 2 different road jerseys at that time, so they decided to showcase both of them.
Caminiti was probably flying on coke and thought he was wearing the right uni
1:58:35 for my fellow Cleveland fans
why are Ken Caminiti and Tony Gwynn wearing different uniforms?
Even bigger question: How did Ken Caminiti make the All-Star Game with a .247 AVG and 6 HR? Surely there were more productive 3rd basemen.
Questions asked but no answers yet....as a Padre fan I will miss these guys.
If they were both on the Padres Aron and Griffey wore different unis on the Mariners.
Many argue that the All-Star game wasn’t as dazzling as it used to be starting this year since interleague play became a thing. Yet people don’t complain about the NFL doing interconference play and millions of people will watch the Super Bowl. Baseball fans are the worst. 🙄
27:35 damm! Bob... Alexander neither Rodriguez are Russian given names or last names... lol
Is that All-4-One singing _O Canada?_
No. The McAuley Boys did that honor before LeAnn Rimes sang "The Star-Spangled Banner." Don't believe me? Believe this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1997_Major_League_Baseball_All-Star_Game
Why was there another all star game so soon in 2019 ?
Whatchew mean? 22 years is long enough. The last one in The Land before 97 was only 16 years earlier in 1981...
7:43
GODDAMN!!! AND I thought Joe Carter was booed really bad in the 1996 all-star game.. Poor Albert Belle. It's like they only voted him in so they can boo the fuck out if him....
He was once your clean-up slugger, and THIS is how you treat him because another team offered him more money. If you where in his shoes, you might have done the same thing. Just shows how evil fans can be. Maybe this is why he didn't attend the reunion of the 1995 team. He looked at Baseball as a business, and he got paid to hit a ball over the wall.
+JoJoGunn it's weird how Albert Belle was interested signing with the Yankees after the 1998 season but Brian Cashman denied him, he made a smart move to sign Bernie Williams
Sammy sosa wasn’t chosen in this all star game? 🤔

Hey why are the Houston Astros playing for the NL??
They started in the NL until they moved to the AL west in 2012 I think to have all divisions have 5 teams each.

We love all people and and players in this great game for what they do for ALL the rest. No one should be held over another if you're truly American. Don't be an ass like Trump.
