As a Brewer fan this was an all time low. The Brewers were horrible and well on their way towards 56-106, then to add insult to injury it would figure that the all star game would be an epic disaster. Honestly Miller Park wasn't completely ready. They've added so much to the ball park since and the team is at least respectable now compared to then. I really wish Selig wasn't so impatient and waited until the team was sold before hosting the All Star game. Miller Park hosting an All Star game today would be sooo much better now.

Can you also imagine how Jose Vidro felt not only to shake Ozzie Smith's hand, but to stand next to him during the lineup announcement and national anthems? I bet that is a memory he will forever live with. And Jorge Posada's son took off faster than Ichiro
I've watched quite a few All-Star Games over the years. The Yankees players usually get booed, LOL, unless their playing in New York. While the home team, or the players from the team who's stadium your playing at usually get a good ovation, but the Brewers players were given a HUGE OVATION. Brewers fans LOVE their Brewers and they'll let you know just how much! Fans in Milwaukee are devoted!
I was so blessed, lucky, and HONORED to have been able to meet most of the Brewers players from 1977 to 1984, but one that was always decent, kind, considerate, and almost always accommodating was Bob Uecker! He is more than a legendary player, he IS a great person as well.
I've been a fan of the Milwaukee Brewers my entire life. My Dad took me to see my first Brewers game in 1976 or 77. Milwaukee County 🏟Stadium🏟 was massive to a 9 year old kid. I don't remember the specifics, except that I was fascinated by the game. My Dad had signed me up for Little League Baseball that summer. From that moment on, I was a Baseball fan, and I still am. Sadly I had just moved from Milwaukee before this game happened. I would have loved to have been in attendance. I wasn't too thrilled with how it ended however, but it was what was.
Post Date: July 9 2022 09:25. Today marks exactly 20 years Milwaukie hosted the MLB ALL STAR GAME, I wonder as a brewers fan how many more years until it comes back to Milwaukie.
The funny thing to me is, the "ASG winner gets home-field advantage for the World Series" rule doesn't actually fix the problem - it just makes managers more leery of using their bench players, just in case. But get another extra innings All-Star Game one year, one that goes more than 11 innings, and the same goddamn problem will pop up all over again...
1:14:32- we can never get enough of Bob Uecker making baseball jokes, he's hilarious. BTW, I've got to check out those Miller Lite commercials he was in, sometimes with John Madden!!!
When I was younger I was one of the fans mad that they ended this game in a tie but now that I am older and understand baseball more I can now see why Bud Selig ended the game to protect the players from injury and of course both teams were out of pitchers.
When Torii Hunter made that catch, I was thinking ‘Wow, this is gonna be an incredible game.’ Little did I know I could’ve turned the game off right after that.
Talk about tragedy: the 2002 MLB All-Star Game will go down in infamy as one of the worst MLB All-Star Games in history, due to the maximum use of the 30 men and the controversial 7-7 tie!
A lot of people thought it was a shame that it happened in Milwaukee, Bud Selig's hometown. But would this game memorable for anything other than the catch if this ended with a winner? It would have been just another all star game that no one remembers. My dad was there, and while I would've been upset if I spent the amount of money he did, I would have loved to be at the most infamous all star game of all time.
A great hidden gem in this game at 1:14:20 when Bob Uecker joins Buck and McCarver in the booth - Uecker is in rare form and I never heard McCarver laugh this hard before or since.
I am no Selig fan. I think he is arguably the worst commissioner ever with only Buhie Khun being his revival. I can't stand virtually anything he did as commissioner. That being said... I never understood the blame he got for this. What was he supposed to do? The managers came to him with a dilemma as they ran out of pitchers. If there is any blame to pass around it should be to the managers because in a game where they have rosters with more than 30 players, there is no rhyme or reason why they should ever run out of players in that situation. Especially if it's s a close game, you hold some back just in case it goes into extra innings. The managers with this modern, dumb philosophy of "we have to get everybody into the game" is the culprit, not Bud Selig. It's probably the only time I've defended Selig and the only occasion I think of where he got blamed for something I don't think was his fault.
Well, that would have taken the heat off the managers if it was the commissioner that forced the game to continue I suppose. The other problem was that both teams were down to their last pitchers and both Garcia and Padilla had pitched two innings and both would have been maxed out under the rules by the next inning. I suppose both teams could have resorted to fielders going to the mound to pitch, but I don't think fans would have liked that in the All Star Game either. The other potential backlash would have been if the teams resorted to something like that and somebody got injured pitching. Perhaps the Commissioner would have the authority to suspend the rules and allow Padilla and Garcia to go past three innings? No matter what the scenario, it just seemed like a lose-lose. I understand and respect your opinion though. It's always good to debate these interesting questions. The one thing I will say is that while I think Selig unduly got a little too much heat for this, I do think he handled it poorly even though I agree with his final decision. He could have and should have handled it much better than merely having the PA announcer abruptly announce that the game will end in a tie if no one scores. If you're going to make an unprecedented decision like that, at least explain yourself to the masses that paid top dollar for those seats expecting to see the game to a conclusion. In typical Selig fashion, even if he makes a good decision, he mishandles the execution of it. He owed more to the fans that what he gave them. Just my .02.
He made the right call. You wouldn't want your team's players getting inured for the second half just because of a stupid all star game. Especially teams that were in playoff hunt then.
Art imitating life. The crowd is chanting "Let them play!" during the bottom of the 11th which is straight out of The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training.

It seems that the All-Star Game has gotten better over the years. Say what you will about Rob Manfred (he's a nutcase of a commish), but he did think of a better way to give teams a home field advantage in the World Series. Plus, the Home Run Derby tiebreaker too!
+Jose Gonzalez Not allowed to win a meaningless game you could get hurt in playing overtime. I think it's good that it decides who gets homefield now, makes it have meaning. Now it can't end in a tie I guess. I'm a Mariners fan, if Freddy Garcia would have got hurt doing 3 more innings I would have been pissed. I would have been far from the only one. He was one of our main guys then.
Im 50/50.... Freddy and i forgot who else werent about to throw 3 innings when both were likely to start on short days rest a few days later. The ASG didnt mean anything in 2002... however the OFFICIAL RULES state "any team that cannot or refuses to take the field shall by definition forfeit the game" So the AL won by default cause the NL didnt take the field in the 12th.
True. Maybe it'd be more controversial if the rule about the winner of the ASG getting home field advantage in the world series had gone into effect that year, but it didn't, so the game didn't really make a difference.
I don't understand why the AL didn't just let the NL win at the end of the game. It doesn't count, so who cares? Throw a soft pitch down the middle so one of the guys crushes it.
I remember being a young kid watching this game end in a tie and being so disappointed, especially as a Brewers fan. As I've gotten older, however, I honestly think Selig made the right call in ending this game. At the end of the day, the game was a meaningless exhibition (before they came up with the dumb homefield advantage crap the year after) and there would have been even more backlash had it come down to using position players to pitch, and someone's star player had gotten hurt in the process.
Honestly this would have gone over so much more smoothly if they hadn't taken so long at the end. It reeked of incompetence and just engendered such a negative reaction to whatever decision they'd make.

Worst All Star game ever and worst of all, it was just after Kyle and JB died with the Cardinals @9:40. Its a tie but theres akwsys next year to come back and win it agsin for American League
The all star game that sucked the life out of future all star games
Worst All Star game ever and worst of all, it was just after Kyle and JB died with the Cardinals @9:40. Plus it was while rumors were the strike was supposed to take place on September 3rd that year. 2:45:08 & 2:47:46 Bud is talking like he's drunk and throws his hands up in the air like 'I DON'T KNOW' signal. 2:50:34 Shows Bud looking embarrassed with his look alike yelling at him at 2:50:37. 34:03 was the highlight of the ASG. 30:05 was epic🇺🇲
8:14 RIP Odalis Perez
