I recently realised my coleus is perfect to play with as my first "bonsai". It grows really fast, it's really easy to care for and I already made 15 new plants from pieces I cut off! I love how the process of working on bonsai material gives you a lot cuttings to propagate and share with others!
ive had an interest in bonsai and plants in general for a while now but never really felt like doing anything related to it... and then this channel suddenly appeared out of nowhere. i think the universe is trying to tell me something
Well done, Darren! A bit of a conservative pruning today, uh? Jokes aside, I’m amazed by how nice, clear, and engaging are your videos… I wish I had a hundredth of you talent! 👍
Glad to see you back with a nice video. Schefflera is not one of my favorites but I like what you did for the future of the plant. Pity that the video bcame a commercial, but I ll accept that because I like the way you work making bonsai. I am a fan of you since you began making bonsai video's.👍👍👍
The sponsored vids won’t be always the way, we had some money issues.. Will make more of the typical videos with outdoor species, just taking a long time to edit 🙈 thanks for the support, I can’t remember any other members who have been here longer!
Great work Darren! I think I would have cut all those extra roots coming from the trunk, but that's just personal taste. Excited to see where it leads you. I have a question, did you apply past to the cut? If not, why didn't you?
Yeah I thought I’d leave them incase they come in useful. Regarding cut paste, I didn’t but only because I’m running low. I’m not sure if schefflera need it or respond to it, it’s actually something I’m investigating myself. So I left large stubs that I’ll come back to
As always, very nice to see you again. I have tried the Schefflera as a bonsai, but the tree didn't like my winter quarters for it, so it succumbed to spider mites and aphids (took a while before I detected them) but are thinking of trying again. My weeping fig are doing great though 😄.
They aren’t the best subjects because of the huge leaves, but it’s doable. At 10 inches you wouldn’t have to cut back far to stimulate side branches to form. For tropicals it’s best to work on them in summertime when it’s warm so might be worth leaving it to grow and try next summer (assuming you’re northern hemisphere)
I'm afraid it died, I think I did too much, then it got aphids that I didn't catch soon enough which finished it off :( I bought another one but it is much smaller, just a rooted cutting to grow bigger. So yeah, I killed the impossible to kill plant haha
@grobonsai thank you for being open, I was also curious about this, it can be defeating and almost embarrassing when you put so much effort into something that dies, i think your right by saying you did too much, I think doing the foliage in the 1st year, and the roots in the second wouldn't have stressed it out so much

Hear the universe!!!!
Same here for me too
I can only recommend this hobby. It is such an enrichment in life :)
@@BONSAIenCORTO YESSS 💯
That was a funky base. Some crazy roots in there haha. Good job sorting it out I’m looking forward to see how it does :)
Terrible wasn't. All the cuttings died in the heatwave too.
@@grobonsai thats annoying, but im sure there will be plenty more opportunities for cuttings again
Great video Darren. Not one second iof it was boring! looking forward for updates.
Thanks BV!
Great fun video Darren! Where d'ya get the time?? I can't cobble together more than a couple of clips at the moment...
Burning the candle at both ends, Dave!
Great viewing with my breakfast. looking forward to seeing more.
Great video Darren. Ninja editing skills 😃
I love doing that level of drastic hard pruning just to watch my partner’s reaction. Be bold, or go home. 😆
Sorry missed this comment! Thanks Jason. Some times the eggs need to be cracked *and* beaten to make that omelette
great production quality. You deserve more views!
found your video randomly recommended by youtube
Thanks 🙏 I agree - but I guess I’m biased lol
I was suffering for the scissors until I saw the root cutter..... thats the best way to bend scissors. Really thank you for sharing it. Cheers!!!
they're a pair of old root shears, blunt af, been dropped, stepped on, left out in the rain. wouldn't abuse a good pair though :)
Great video mate!!! You are making some really good ones now! Quality!!
Glad you like them!
Well done, Darren!

Schefflera are so weird to work for Bonsai, but the refined trees look extremely cool

I don’t know much about them, but love the looks of them. Sorry yours didn’t make it!
Great video!
Great Video! I think I´ll stick to my outdoor species tho :D Greetings!
What media do you use
At what date did you do this work? I have two that need repotting, but I thought mnow is too late for tropicals
Late July in the heatwave I think. Probably a bit late now but I’m no expert
Extreme pruning:)
Gotta make that omelette :)
Would this work for a 10 inch rubber tree?

@@grobonsai thanks! 🥰
The trunks still look to straight but awesome tree. Great work
Ah this is just the beginning! See what the tree gives me and go from there
Any update on the umbrella plant?

Are there any updates for this one?
Yeah it died lol I think I did too much, then when it produced growth aphids snuck in and finished it off without me noticing 😣
Good👍👍

Hmm sure I did, sorry. Thanks for the heads up, I’ll check it when I can get to my desk - can’t find the option in the phone app
I was right - It was already checked.
contrary to what you said i believe all plants can be bonsai’s
i dont think we have much play in whether a plant lives or dies…. we jjust think we do
This one died so it’s comforting to hear 😁
