  • Northern Exposure is one of the greatest shows of all time, but it's been lost to obscurity in these streaming times. Why did that happen? What makes it so great? are all questions that will be answered in this three part series.
This project has taken me TEN MONTHS to work on, so just watching it (giving it a like if you enjoyed it) would mean the world to me. If you'd like to give any more support, it's not expected, but appreciated.

      Funny. Same here.
I moved to Seattle when they were filming the first season, and the bus I was on drove through the town where they filmed it along the way.
The big mural of the moose was on the wall of the building next to the bus, and the driver said the series was being filmed there.
I had never heard of it and I didn't have a television, so I didn't see the series until a few years later when it was on its fourth season.
It amazed me because it reminded me of Seattle and the type of people I knew in Seattle at the time.
Recently I kept getting: "First season of Northern Exposure" on the top of my gematrix results.
It reminded me of those days, so for nostalgia's sake I started re-watching the series a month or so ago, when this video was made.
I also happened to be born on the same day as the actor who played Joel, and I was sort of in the same situation as his character in the show - finished with college, but unable to find anything like the kind of work I had gone to college for, and very disappointed with where my life was going.
I hated his complaining on the show, but I could understand it and sympathize with it.
It seemed like everyone at the time was being screwed by their jobs, treacherous and deceptive job descriptions, lower pay than promised, and bad college debts.
It reminded me of Seattle because in that era, before Seattle was transformed by California, it had a local flavor, and a distinctly local type of people, who seemed to me to be more individualistic and more wild western than the people where I came from in Wisconsin.
That same kind of character seemed to be featured in the series.

I watched every episode as a teenager. It connected with me on a very deep level. I grew up in a very isolated small rural town. Although I was young I knew it was something special. Thanks to your video I am going to binge watch every episode again, now as an adult. I hated TV mostly back then and was too deep in my career and raising my family to watch anything but PBS, but there was one major exception, and that was THIS show. The only commercial network show I watched with eagerness and regularity at that time. No show had the originality, warmth, depth, ambition, ambiguity, poetry, humor, inspiration, surreality, novelistic feel, atmosphere, fearlessness and brilliance that this one did. And, no, those of us who have always had the DVDs aren't going to "shush," young man, lol. Anyway, nice job, and thanks for helping spread the word about a one-of-a-kind show.

Funny I came across your video tonight Willard. A few weeks ago, I started watching the series after not seeing it for about 20 years. For the most part, I've never been personally nostalgic about my personal past. I've moved on....but revisiting the show has given me a taste of so many things that I not only forgot about in the show, but things I forgot about in my own life. It's almost like some scenes are written about things or people I've met in my life. This is one of the truly great things about the show. It draws you in and almost makes you a character in the show, even if you don't have any lines but are simply observing what's going on around you. I've really connected to two episodes again...the first being "Three Amgos" because I had a similar situation with two others where we made an agreement about what would happen and what we would do, if one of us passed away. The other 2 are now gone, and I'm now left, but buried both with the wishes they had asked for. A good feeling to this day. The 2nd was the episode which followed "Three Amigos", in Season Three called "Lost And Found". The ending scene where Joel is hosting a party at his place and the attendees all get together and take the photo at the end. And then seeing the photo. I have several group shots I'd taken over the years with so many friends, many who have now passed away. The photo and the episode, seem to be the turning point as to when Joel really began to enjoy the great gift he was given to serve the community of Cicely. He seems to really quit fighting the situation, and embraces it. This episode touches on this, in the beginning, where Joel is also writing the letter to Mark, who he went to Med School with and telling him how much he loves it in Alaska and feels "very, very, very....lucky". A turning point for Joel, as it's the first time he expresses how he really feels. Anyway, several of the group photos I have of old friends, definitely remind me of the many paths I've traveled and the great people I've had the honor of sharing my life together with. You might lose track of many of them over time, but the memories live on and you continue to be connected. The ending with the close up of each character in the photo, just kills me and hits home very hard. Such a perfect episode for me. I look forward to your next part. Dig, DmGrk

Thank you so much for writing this. Your line about how revisiting the show brought back a taste of things you had forgotten in your own life really hit home with me. I thought I was the only one. I was in college when Northern Exposure first aired and I, along with with all of my friends, watched it and discussed it with devotion. We held viewing parties in the dorm and discussed the show the next day over lunch in the dining hall. At that point in my life, when I was just setting out on my own, I had some low-key daydreams of moving to Alaska and finding a little town like Cicely to live in. The show was fun, funny and had great romantic comedy aspects. I've started watching it again on Amazon Prime and, not only is it a good watch, but it's brought back some of those old feelings and reflections. Even the theme songs brings back certain emotions from the time. I'm about halfway through season two and can't wait to watch all of it again.

I purchased a set of bootleg DVDs that had the full length episodes with the correct music, made from a Canadian broadcast. That was in 2007, and I ripped the disks onto my hard drive to make it easy to watch.
It's amazing how big a difference the music makes. It's not just the background music from the radio station, but the distinctive selections that are paired with particular scenes in such a way that it fits perfectly. There's so much lost in the official DVD releases.
Cutting the music from these shows doesn't do the artists any good either. They lose a huge opportunity for new generations to be exposed to their music and maybe become interested in purchasing it.
Really sad how the system works, but I'm grateful that I was able to access the show in its intended form.

The real reason it was forgotten was that the U.S. dvd version didn't include the original music. It was for a time shown in reruns. I remember watching it on the WB. That included the original music because it requires a different music license. I was going to she'll out $200 dollars for the U.K. dvd version until Prime came along. Most people would rather do things above board than pirate if something is 1) actually available 2) priced reasonably. Since copyright BS rules out 1 & 2 I have zero moral or ethical problems with people getting this show via other means like a torrent. I never watched it in the 90s but all these years later I am watching it fresh, now. It's fantastic. If corporate greed makes it impossible to stream it legally, I'm all for people finding it by other means. DVD or torrent.

I loved this show! My wife and I caught it every week. Probably the last show I had to make sure I was home to see. Been trying to watch it on YT for years. Never occurred to me that it was the music. Chris the DJ was our favorite character.
Something about it seems so quintessentially 90s. Something kinda "grungy" about it.
There was another excelent show at about the same time called "Picket Fences". I think network TV was worried about cable eating its' lunch in the early 90s and so was trying hard before giving up completely

As a British kid it was the most romantic vision of America I could wish for. Huge influence on how I dressed and how I still would prefer to be living.
So much gentler than Twin Peaks and asked a lot more profound existential questions.
Hope they sort out licensing soon because this show needs to be seen again.

Very well done! This was appointment television for me in the 90s and started to re-watch it all over again last year (one episode a week as was intended. I don't binge watch.) Though I loved the show I hadn't realized how much it had shaped my younger self and how I had lost that growing up. In a sense it's like going back home and reconnecting with old friends, knowing things have changed but deep down, knowing some things stay the same. Sure the music isn't the same but I think that's really secondary to the writing and the acting, which I believe that even in its later years was still top notch.
Again, thanks. Can't wait to see part 2!

The creators did a fine job at pointing out their audience. Perfection. I was 13 when it was out, but I just couldn't get into it back then. I could never get passed the dopey theme song. It's still dopey to this day. I have watched the entire first season, and 4 episodes of the second. I almost quit during the first scene of the first episode. I whiny doctor! Good grief. It's been 12 episodes and the Joel character does NOT stop complaining about living in Alaska. He has not stopped talking about being a doctor, about being from Manhattan, about being Jewish...and he's a monster willing to do horrible things so he he can get back to NY when it's in his contract to be there for four years. The two leads re awful human beings. Maggie was willing to be unfaithful during the first season while she knew the doctor was engaged. I have to say all other characters are well written so far, but the two leads are very poorly written and Joel is absolutely unbearable. The creator did have their audience hooked, though...well done. I love the show, but Joel and Maggie are absolute crap and are poorly written. They are awful to each other, yet they are always finding a way to work together and have some sort of underlying romance. What a time capsule this is. I'm not sure I will watch the 5th episode of season 2. I can't take anymore whining from Joel. His hair looks different in every scene. Maggie, the writers did her wrong, and she's not likable either.

I was a school girl in England when this show first aired. I've since lived in SE Asia and came back to the US and after moving from NYC to San Francisco then LA I developed a pattern of always watching movies or shows based around the area I have moved.
When I recently moved to Seattle everyone told me I needed to watch Northern Exposure. (Already binged Twin Peaks) But it was not available streaming and I was too busy to rent the DVDS from the library. NE is now on Prime and I'm only in S2 but I wanted see if there were any recap videos and I'm so glad I found yours!
You didn't just recap the seasons (thus far) but your interpretation and relatability when it comes to video appreciation is fantastic!
I had no idea when I started there were six seasons of NE so let's see if it keeps the quality of the first 2 seasons.
Although I think I prefer the pace and diversity of shows from 2000+. I'm thinking Lost, The Sopranos .. I'm sure there are others but I can't think of them now.
I usually catch series when they're in their last season because people tell me they're wonderful and then I end up binge watching them..
To fuel me through the next 4 seasons I'm glad I found youryour 2 part synopsis ('cause I am of those people that skips to the end of the book sometimes!)
    Cheers!!!

LOL I then discovered Canadian television and a show called "North of 60". OMG this show captivated me totally. Based on a Native tribe called the Dine' in Northern Canada. Along with the weekly episodes they also produced several made for television movies that had very deep subject matter. Little did I know that after a bad marriage I would meet a Dine' lady from Arizona. Most would know her as a Navajo but they call their selves Dine'. We have been together since 2016.
