Most intelligent and sentimental show that has ever been on television... I have had the complete season DVD set for a number of years... And this is my annual winter viewing..I absolutely love Northern Exposure ❤
"I think you are cooking with ingredients that no one realizes are edible" Gotta be one of the best things you've said and I haven't even finished. I love how Joe essentially picks up a lot of knowledge about Sicily from patients, it's like it's own little unraveled adventure for him, you know getting kidnapped and all, you just know he's getting into a world of chaos every season. Bravo Will, another fire part!
I've enjoyed these videos so much. I loved Northern Exposure when it was on TV and am currently rewatching it now on Amazon. It's nice to hear someone else who loved it as much talk about it. My grandmother told me she cried when the show ended. I get it. It's special. It's beautiful.
I also cried. The song......"Our Town" that they used still makes me weep. I own the entire series and just recently re-watched it while snowed in. I never grow tired of it.
Aloha 🤙🏾 The writers of Northern Exposure must of been fans of Taxi 🚕, the show that I believe to be at the top with primal metaphysical tones. Both shows are all captivating and pull you into their world. Thanks for your phenomenal tell. It was enough to remind me of the entire episode as you described it. Thanks
One thing I’d mention briefly is the love they show for Detroit and the auto manufacturers at the time. If you’re into old 4x4’s, Northern Exposure is almost pornographic.
@@thebigwagyuyeah, that’s what I mean. They do a little highlight reel, showing several auto manufacturers and even the production line for a moment. A nice little homage.
Great retrospective. Excellent commentary. I'm sure I'm not the first to point this out, but NE was not filmed in Alaska. (I know. It gutted me too.) It was filmed in Washington State.
The funniest bit about all of this, is that like Twin Peaks, I can safely say that Northern exposure was filmed here in Washington state. In fact the names of Roslyn and Cicely from the historical flashback season 3 Finale is one such nod. The other is Seattle is quite literally the closest city to most of Alaska, up to and including the nearest MLB and NFL franchises. This wasn't helped by many of the interiors were filmed in the now suburb of Renton, which is the south end of Lake Washington from Seattle. And while Twin Peaks was filmed externally at North Bend and Snoqualmie, Roslyn hosted downtown Cicely. Sadly like the music, the town has had massive fires since the filming of the show and so some of the iconic places show are shown here as they were captured on celluloid in the late 80s and early 90s.
Reservation Dogs is a wonderful show that reminds me so much of Northern Exposure. The way that Rez Dogs used surreal storytelling and the metaphysical to weave into the larger arc of the characters lives is almost identical to NX, and not to mention the use of spirits as guides. I would love to see a future video exploring the connection between the two
Seasons 3 and 4 of Northern Exposure are the best in the history of American commercial television. Three Amigos from S. 3 and Nothing's Perfect from S. 4 are very special to me.
@@thebigwagyu Absolutely, another banger that ranks at the same level, I usually think of that one as one of the greats; you can wrap yourself up in that episode like a blanket -- it's so 3-dimensional you feel like you're in the dining hall and the wine cellar with the characters - but I had to limit myself to 2 choices for the comment. There are no weak links in these seasons, though.
I did love this show when it was on the air. I was very sad when it was canceled. I wound up moving from Houston to Port Angeles, Washington, out on the Olympic peninsula and discovered that, 15 years later, the people of Roslyn, where it was filmed still had fond memories of it. One of there people had a tricked out white pickup which was done up as the official vehicle of KBHR Radio, Cicely, Alaska, complete with evergreen trees on the doors. He would pay a visit to Port Angles, every few months, and we would see it parked around town.
“And Joel ACTUALLY gets to see his basketball game.” I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who was invested in that part of the episode. I was rooting for him lol
Did anyone catch the fact that the two town founders are Cicely and Roslyn. Cicely being the fictional Alaskan town the show is set in and Roslyn being the actual physical town that the show was filmed in Washington.
Most of the ideas for the stories were from the national geographic magazine, the writers stole them. You could call them the back 🔙 drop 💧 idea, not the personal relationships though!!!!😮😮😮😮😢😢😢
The Detroit episode is incredible. Funnily, I always conflate it in my mind with Robert Altman's highly underrated 1978 comedy, A Wedding, which has a similar vibe and even a mom locking herself in the bathroom like in this episode. It may be a testament to how cinematic NExp is that I confuse it with a film by a great director.
You wanna hear something Metaphysical? I know someone in real life who looks JUST LIKE Maggie from this show...but she was born during the shows 4th season.
Wish you would have mentioned the episode, "Wake Up Call," which, for me, is not only the best Northern Exposure episode ever, but the best ever aired on network television, period. This was an egregious omission. And Mike Monroe? The first character I could not stand, even though I do like Anthony Edwards.
The best show I’ve never heard of as Adam Arkin would say YOU IDIOT I WAS WATCHING THIS SHOW FROM DAY ONE I EVEN BOUGHT SEASON 3 on DVD one of my all time favorite shows ever

Can't wait for part three. This is such a good recap
The best show I rewatch pathologically every three years!
One of the greatest TV series around. Thanks for making this video. Well done.
Absolutely phenomenal part 2!!
I would also like to compliment you on your improvement in audio and presentation from the first video to the second.
I loved this show so much! Truly a show to always remember. Thanks for reminding me at how special it is. Great job!
Great video breakdown of a wonderful show 🎉

Prime quietly added all 6 seasons about a week ago!!!! NE will finally get the appreciation it deserves.
This show really got me through the 90s.. Lived for it.. When Tuesday came around I would insert the VHS tape and hit record ⏺

It’s funny that you say that because one of the episodes I highlight in season 4 is the episode that they go to Detroit

Someone in the writers room must've been from Motor city now that I think about it
this is why i started watching the show . was hooked, that and thought maggie was hot
Nice 486 monitor aesthetic...

The Hawk "Screaming" at start of show, caught me every week, and I watched every episode, always wondered why no re-runs.
If you were born before 1980 you know northern exposure. Unless your hermit
Oh, I've heard of it. Me and my buddy are halfway through season 3 and I've seen every episode about 15 times.
Thank you for these
Looking forward to seeing Part 3!

I am obsessed--visited in 1992 and am making a return trip to Cicely (Roslyn) in August, my family thinks I'm crazy

I remember the flying piano scene. What is a scene that stands out from the show?
I’m now watching season 5 for free on Amazon Prime and it’s the best season of NE in my opinion. Really great writing and stories. Man I miss the 90’s
Thank you so much !
Thank you!

Knowing NE, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a direct inspiration
Every person who worked on that show, from the writers to the directors, are all such huge film nerds
@@thebigwagyu Could very well be the case.
The flying man & Ed can fly. Who's the 3rd?
Joel’s mom!

In season six, when chris does his (casey at the bar routine) please cover that.
