A song that's 25 years old and I can still remember learning the lyrics like it was yesterday...they are the gift that keeps on giving ❤ Suggs should get a knighthood..they all should..
As popular and well known as these guys are, they are still underrated. I think some see them as light and fluffy because that's their shtick, but underneath the madcap exterior they are phenomenally talented song writers and musicians.

They're not underrated as they're seen as one of the biggest bands produced in Britain's history.. They're in the top 40 artists in Britain for album and single sales ahead of .Wham, Phil Collins, The Police, Diana Ross, Katy Perry, Adam Ant, The Jam, Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, Frank Sinatra and Prince These bands were huge in their time and Madness only lasted for about 6 years after they got recognition and sales in 1979 having started the band in 76.. . They made well over 6 million in the 80's alone from sales which would be about 24 million today with inflation. They filled the 80's with some of the best songs you'll ever hear but often they'd get pipped to no.1 by some silly song which still happens today.. But they had over 20 top 20 singles with many of them in the top ten.. Most of those artist who got to no. 1 were flash in the pans and couldn't hold a candle to Madness...
Madness were clearly one of the best bands of the 80's if not the best and they were just as popular with their comeback in the 90's.. In two days they played to 150,000 people for their reunion.. They could play at any of the major festivals today and still move the whole crowd and not many bands can claim this.. They were up their with UB40 who were also huge for quite a while having made a similar amount of money through sales. UB40 lasted far longer though which is why they made slighter more in record sales as if Madness stay around for longer they'd have made a lot more money..
The only down note is that they had so many members so they had to split the money 7 ways.. But some of the madness songs were so popular that these songs are still making them lots of money today.. Song's like Baggy Trousers, Our House, Embarrassment and many more are worth their weight in gold. They're still getting royalties from those songs along with money from adverts today.. Everytime their songs are played on the radio/films/media Madness get paid for it so money's always flowing into their bank account but they won't admit that to the public..
They were thought of so highly that they played on the roof off Buckingham Palace for the Queen... They're the only band in Britain who were personally approached to do this by the Royal family..
Madness were so successful that they all could afford to retire early and that's what they did.
They then cashed in with a reunion tour and a fairly decent album as they also as individuals went off making more money doing other things in the media.. Madness are seen as an institution because of their success so they could never be seen as underrated... Their music was not always simple, many songs had very complicated parts and their songwriting was always well up with the best of the artists around at the time.
Madness were a roaring success but did fade out at the end because the founder of the band left with a year or two to spare.. Still for the amount of time they were around they produced an amazing amount of hits... And for me they're way better than Oasis or Blur or Radiohead for that matter.. They could of been as big as the Beatles if they broke America but they weren't willing to put the work in which is what would have been needed to achieve this.

Can’t express how much I love Madness ..in my top three of favourite bands ever and I still have every single and album they ever realised …this was their biggest hit in years …100% should have been a number 1 ..absolutely love it …The biggest selling Singles group of the 80’s in the U.K.
Only 16, but Madness has been my favourite band fot a long long time, always fun sharing it with my friends and singing along to it with my Dad.
I grew up on this music. I'm 52 now and still love it
This song is brilliantly written. As is all their songs. On the surface it just seems like a silly video to go with a silly song. But a closer look at the lyrics gives you a story about a man dealing with the worst repercussions of alcoholism. Loss of loved ones who no longer wish to associate with you unless you seek help, having no money to the point of being stranded after spending the last of your money at the pub. And finally love of a lamp post which is just a funny visual for the cliche of the drunk who can't keep his balance and requires the assistance of a lamp post to stand.
It's one of my favorite songs by Madness and dare I say one of my favorites period.

Nnnnoo - the lampost is a stand in for a woman of the night. You missed that bit clearly. Even if it's not a prostitute - it's a bird hit on while under the weather. "I've fallen for a lampost" should have been your clue. And you missed it.
This song hits home for me. I lost my wife, kids and job due to alcoholism. Life is good now.

I loved this song as a kid without ever understanding the lyrics, then the new year show they did a couple of years ago Suggs explained the lyrics and it completely changed. Absolute masterpiece.

I remember back when I was a teenager and this song came out. I loved it then and I still love it now as a 37 year old woman. It will always be one of my favorite songs of theirs.

I have happy memories of stumbling round Rugby town centre singing this song and hugging every lamppost I saw. Oh to be 18 again!!! The perfect song that describes the night before/morning after!!! Glad to be reacquainted with it again!!!

A band that I have played over and over again since I was a kid. Many of their songs are so underrated.
Absolutely brilliant. Unique band, individual, distinct music. Never tire of them.
What do they usually say before playing this live?
It's something like when you stumble out if the pub, if you can cling onto the first lampost you can, see you can get to the next and if you can do that you can get all the way home

Seen these twice in the last 12 months live and they are absolutely superb still. Loved this group from there first album one step beyond to where they are now. Always in my life musically ❤

I was 22 and i remember that video clip. All i heard from them was their first record. Thanks to the Young ones tv serie i have just discover. I 'm falling with madness. Still got lots of great stuff to discover. French workers can also love Madness. Zappa's fan too.In the eighties he used to play his guitar solo with reggae background . He often took inspiration in carribean songs too.

Just reading Before We Was We which is a biography of all the band members going right back to the early 1970s. They all transformed their difficult childhoods into brilliant careers with hard work and a revolutionary formula. I admire that.
