Just discovered this song today and I think it's an absolute masterpiece.
Later Madness videos are generally quite sinister and full of theatrics, brilliant and unique. There was never any other band like them.
I didn't take much notice of them when I only had a radio and not a TV set apart from a few songs such as Night Boat to Cairo, Our House and Baggy Trousers and then once I got a TV set and video recorder and borrowed NOW VHS tapes and then later on cable TV so I could watch music channels a whole new world of them opened up to me.

@@ziggypop8106 I think that Madness made the best videos in the 80's and that was at a time when promo videos were at their best for any band or singer. Many bands just make videos of themselves playing live. Madness also have speaking at the beginning of each single as a catch.

I was most sad when it said Mr. Thompson and not Kix. I met Ian Dury when I was working at a venue on his last tour, I tried to use the disabled toilet that was near the manager's office and on trying the door handle heard an almighty "OI!" then 30 seconds later the door opened and it was Ian and I suddenly went semi-mute and all that came out of my mouth was "that was quick" and Ian replied "still the slowest shit I've ever had". God bless him.

At School Ian Dury And The Blockheads had us all singing "hit me with your massive prick". leaving school and starting out in life Madness was my soundtrack.
Ian's last ever video I believe, he was very ill by the time this was done. RIP Ian, a genius, a legend!
Released just three months before Ian passed away, this song only reached number 55 in the UK. I guess Suggs and the band wanted to record a song with Ian Dury (even though they'd known him since the late 1970s) and realised that time was running out for him. The end result is a solid tribute to him. Interesting to see Phil Jupitus mentioned in the video credits too.
Two possibilities come to mind regarding Phil Jupitus. They say it was put together at short notice, so either Phil knew people that could help (costumes, locations, extras, ...), or they used him to redo some of Ian Dury's lines. My reasoning for the second possibility is that since Ian Dury was ill, he may not have been able to re-record parts of the vocals. Phil Jupitus is a very talented impressionist and may have been asked to help out.
He does make a brief appearance in the video - he's the cloaked character holding the noose.
@@brettlinforth1211 I saw Ian Dury and the blockheads supporting Madness at the first Madstock festival in 1991. Both were brilliant, although Morrissey ruined it by not turning up for his slot. To be fair though he did bring it on himself by saying 'meat is murder' to the crowd the night before before being pelted with hotdogs in return so he brought it on himself to an extent. Flowered Up and Gallon drunk were also on the bill. The lead singer of Glowered up was dressed as a flower and out of his head on something as I recall. A truly memorable gig 😂
Actually I wish I had known about this song ten years ago when I had a cat called Freddie. I would have got hours of fun singing it to him...and some good laughs too.

There was an acknowledged chain including Madness,Ian Dury,The Kinks,Max Wall....with intercollaboration between several of them....together this canon encapusulted the vrey best of London Working-class musical culture.
Ian was a grand old man in this tradition and is much missed...Madness,now ,are honourable successors especially as their voices have aged and matured...I hope thei line cotinues...who are the most probable candidates for consideration?
