I got to sing with him once at a protest march of course. The GOP was in Manhattan to renominate "W" Bush. I was by myself and joined the march at the first place available once I got off the subway. There I was in lie with Pete Seeger who had a giant recorder with him, three Quaker gentlemen who had marched everywhere including Selma with Dr. King, and a young black man with a guitar. While we waited for the march to start we sang. It was the best day of my life!
When you hear a Pete Seeger song, you cannot help but sing along. His beautiful music meant for everyone to hear and understand is ingrained in our culture. Thank you for your peace and work Pete.
I consider my life blessed that I was in Pete's presence and got to hear him perform. And I consider myself doubly blessed for I was able to share this moment with my son who was not more than five years old --who had come to love Pete just by listening to him.
Agreed put points off because Pete was unapologetically'& obviously admittedly a communist. I suppose that's allowed in a true democracy. Not sure we live in a true democracy actually. Also, it could be added that Pete Seeger was a product of his times, as we all are. Someone like me born in 1955 won't truly appreciate or understand what someone like Pete went through & viewed through his own lenses to the world & filters. Nonetheless, the man made no apologies for being a communist. BTW, I'm a old school lib--not a conservative by any stretch.
What was remarkable - when Pete was performing with Arlo he was in his 50's and 60's - they would alternate about every 3-5 songs. Arlo would sit in a chair but Pete would usually sit on the stage. I'm in my early 60's and I can barely sit down on the floor, let alone get up.
To think we were alive when Pete Seeger lived, is a remarkable thought. He enriched humanity in ways we can only dream about. I am an atheist, yet I am happy to say that we were blessed by his presence, his music, his views on life and his commitment to equality, love, life and peace.
So true brother. On this little planet during the same time in history. Maybe not be considered important right now, but in 100's or 1000's of years, my goodness it will matter.
@@tomdalzell2407 Communism was a common ideology among artists and intellectuals during the Depression era. He "peddled" the positive values of it .I'm not saying it wasn't evil in the long run and that Stalin didn't call the shots in the Communist Party USA. His participation was a long time ago -80 years, and he and and Woody are part of the American heritage. He pulled away when the facts about Stalin came out. I think it is unfair to toss out his positive contributions because of it, just like I am uncomfortable to pretend he was just only a "social activist". I think the left has to come to grips with the later.
I listen to music like this as well as musicals, classic tenors and western underground. I wonder sometimes if I should be normal. But normal is embracing hate and Pete knew how to deal with that!

I totally 100% agree but people of the 70s and 80s were also not robots. Seems to me more people are brainwashed by society to behave in certain ways. No room for educated creative discussion on hot topics and this just started happening in the last 10-15 years.
Those of you that haven't heard the best version listen to it his name is martirio guantaramera it has a picture of an old guy smoking a cegar on the thumbnail
Love Pete, but he should have learned a little bit about Spanish if he was going to adopt this song. Firstly, rolling one's r's is not something done willy-nilly, as Pete does. It has significance in terms of word meaning. He just rolls them for fun, in places where it is not proper pronunciation. .
Oh, good grief. Pete Seeger gave it his best shot. He was really into the song, and rapported with the audience like fire on the mountain. Don’t put him down.

That boy's sooo lucky to have this memory of grandpa.
We miss you Pete!!
This version of Guantanamera has become an addiction.....must hear it almost daily.

The verse about cultivating a white roses for one's enemies brought tears to my eyes.
Same man. Those are some powerful and beautiful words.
Gracias Infinitas Pete.
i love this man. No other way to put it. He is so much of his audience.
God, I miss this man. Hoping to see you in eternity. 💙
One of my favourite song sang by legend....
A truly great American, an artist, and a nonviolent revolutionary.
rest in peace, weary warrior. you did well.
*I love this song and the poetic lyric forever.*

Seeger may have been non-violent, but there is nothing non-violent about the Communism he peddled to generations of Americans.

Father and Son! Beautiful relationship and great example for all. The song completes everything.
Grandfather and Grandson.
This song has been sung by very famous artistes...but I love Pete Seeger's version.......and listen to it whenever I can !!!!
first time i made my beloved father listen to this song , he almost fainted with emotions !
Seeger has been a hero of mine most of my life. I saw him in Portland, Oregon at Portland State University a long time ago. He was awesome.
Just beautiful. I heard a French singer by the name of Innocent sing this in Chicago recently at arts festival.
Con los pobres de la Tierra
quiero yo mi suerte echar
el arroyo de la sierra
me complace más que el mar.
Bravo Peter !!!
pure love, and I wonder have we lost this? Just a great person. As a father I can only strive to make a moment close to this with my sons.
so true
One of the greatest Americans ever.
May he live on in our memory - Pete Seeger proves that the USA has people who are honourable, genuine and true. It gives hope.

Seeger did NOT enrich humanity. An avowed Communist, he peddled one of the evil ideologies ever plagued upon mankind.
He certainly did enrich humanity. We need more people like Pete Seeger.

It's from Pete and Arlo at Wolf Trap.
Pete Seeger is singing with his grandson, Tao Rodriguez-Seeger, not Arlo Guthrie..
