In the Royal Tenenbaums, I always wondered if Margot was trying to emulate a "grown-up" as a kid, with the fur coat and smoking. Someone who wanted to grow up quickly, but now that she's there, she doesn't know how to go beyond that. Thank you for an amazing video - I learnt so much, especially about the Royal Tenenbaums.
Note on 12:35: in the Torah ("Old Testament") clothing is labelled as "shatnez/שַׁעַטְנֵז" if it contains a mixture of wool and linen, or another blend of a material that comes from an animal, and a material that comes from a plant. Wearing any shatnez clothing is prohibited, it's seen as mixing two life forms, and the rule of shatnez also prohibits mixing of any types of materials, and the planting of different seeds together. Like a lot of Jewish laws, the applications and definitions have evolved over time from that original definition, but I never would've thought it'd be interpreted as "stripes are bad" lmao. I had no idea that's why stripes are seen as revolutionary and counter-culture! Great video as always, really educational and well-thought out!
I absolutely love your style and the way you present information is so succinct. I haven't seen The Royal Tenenbaums, but I still understood what you were saying and now I really wanna watch it. I can't wait to see more content!!
If you were a teacher I would go to your class with joy and enthousiasme because wouaaaah I love how you research for your videos they're so good, you should be proud of yourself. Also I'm French and I really love how you articulates ^^
@@oonooooooooo yes i am aware, however i wasn't refering to the speech impediment condition. I was referring to the stammer that is usually an insinuation of nervousness or the state of being unsure. I pointed out how not stammering makes her sound more knowledgeable and believable. I meant not disrespect towards Poole with a natural stutter and if it came off offensive, i apologize.
this was so interesting i love the way u described everything :) also ur eye shadow is so beautiful ! it would be so inspiring if u made a lookbook, bc ur style is so lovely
I'm not ashamed to admit that I (a grown ass man) quite literally shrieked when this video popped up in my recommended. Wes Anderson is my all time favorite filmmaker! 🦊🐶
Okay OMG, I just discovered your channel and as soon as I saw "Wes Anderson" I made the most ridiculous sound of happiness lol I'm subscribing right away 💕
Amo tu canal !!
I loved how in depth you are when describing the costumes and colors. Wes Anderson’s use of colors in his films is what really helps sets the mood in each scene. Thank you for making this video 😊💯💗
god i love your channel.. i majored in history but i only became interested in fashion history in my senior year of college and your channel is just feeding my fascination in the best way
My dream is to one day sew a recreation of Suzy's pink coat from the end of moonrise kingdom. I love that movie so much and Suzy and Sam were such important characters for me growing up not understanding my own mental health and not feeling like the world understood me
this is so well put! i love how in depth you go in this video :) i like clothes and i’m a film student but i’ve never really thought too much about costumes in terms of films... this is definitely helpful information going forward.. thank you for creating this!
This was a fantastic video essay, wow!!! wes is one of my favourite directors of all time. i wish my assignments in film class were like this when i was in school 😅 I would also love to see you breakdown outfits from the french new wave, like eric rohmer and godard :)
I know absolutely nothing about Wes Anderson (like I literally don’t know who he is lol) but this was so interesting! I love your interpretations, I don’t think I ever would have consciously picked up on them.
okay, i've been waiting for years for someone to make a video like this, we all needed this video hehe and im so happy that i found you i love your sense of fashion and style so much! chic woman
i would love to see you make a video where you talk more in depth of how you found your love for vintage clothing and your favorite pieces you own, etc
i just wanna say bc im a hugeeee fan of royal tenenbaums and i never hear ppl talking about it, but to build on your last point- i think the wardrobe is a wonderful little red herring to how each character has grown; the things they want to change they cannot; like their past- but despite this baggage they manage to continue living and finding happiness thru small moments- and really the best example is royal laughing at margot's play at the end; in contrast to the beginning when he refused to even attempt to understand her plays; OK ANYWAY ramble over thank you ive been binging your channel all day and i loveee your videos so much
Wes Anderson is such a genious omg. I imagined myself during childhood how movies would look like if I made them and Wes Anderson totally captured all and even my aesthetics
Have you seen Hercule Poirot, ‘The Labours of Hercules’? I love it for the suspense,Art Deco depiction and the feeling of being trapped in a high mountain Swiss resort of fading elegance. I dreamed about it after watching it. It’s not the same as Grand Budapest but I think you might like the costumes and story. I would be so interested in your take on it! Oh and also Miss Fischer’s Mystery Series - georgeous costumes and compelling themes!
I'd love to hear your thoughts on Life Aquatic and Darjeeling Limited. Especially in Darjeeling, the costuming choices really do inform who the characters are
I think what the proper translation from the old testament was a decree to "become unevenly yoked" with unbelievers. Telling the Israelites not to marry those with other gods. Gotta love how the medievil translations made it about patterns. :)
12:30 it's part of the Leviticus, they are actually super interesting (and funny) and the reason why they shouldn't mix materials in clothing it's because it would be considered impure.
not mixing fabrics was because higher ups in the church would have mixed fabrics in their uniform. So, unless you had earned that piece of clothe it was considered sacrilegious.
Wow, I thought surely 15 minutes isn't enough time to talk about a bunch of costumes but I was totally wrong. Loved the analysis. I especially didn't pick up on the significance of yellow in Moonrise Kingdom
What a great video! The content was superb and your presentation of it was really well done. I've noticed lately that there's not a well established middle ground between "announcer voice" and casual speech but this just about nails it. Easy to hear and understand but still relatable and doesn't feel too artificial. Thanks for the great vid!
Thank you! Visually and from an atmospheric story telling perspective , Grand Budapest has a special place in my heart. The Royal Tenebaum’s was fun. Now I need to seen Moonlight Kingdom.
Love your content!! it's always super interesting and well researched. But also your personally style is absolutely amazing and really inspires me to keep being bolder in my style choices
i love your videos so much!! i just binge watched the disney princess ones along with your others and ur so underrated! i love your makeup so much too omg
I love your videos. You should talk about the chilling adventures of sabrina. Scream queens . Mean girls and each season of American horror story. I would love to know the inspirations timeline and the accuracy of those shows! Just some suggestions I would love to see. Subscribed btw:)
You didn't mention the clothing choices for Frances McDormand's character in Moonrise Kingdom. I'm pretty sure she was wearing authentic vintage Lilly Pulitzer.
Thank you for this video, I was struggling to find inspiration for how to end my final, an analisis on The Royal Tenenbaums and your interpretation really helped me!!
Very interesting video, great to hear your thoughts about the clothes choices by a single director over a couple of films. Certainly adds a lot to the films, thank you
I was today years old when i learned from that video, that the grand butapest hotel is located in the zubrowka, which is hilarous to me as a Polish, 'cuz żubrówka is a brand name for a vodka, quite popular and affordable prized one i have to say
Your analysis has helped me understand these films so much more! I think the term Old Testament is supersessionist though, Hebrew Bible is more appropriate!
I watch her videos because I see beautiful clothing’s and she always dresses so cutesy I love it so much seeing you is my favourite thing in the video! P.s love the makeup :D
The stripes that gustav wears in his prison uniform could also symbolize how he is unwanted by the dead lady's family and that he is unwelcome to them, considering the fact that he has the possibility of inheriting their mothers wealth
I know you mostly covered clothes, but the hair of the 3 concierges of the grand budapest are interesting as well, showing that the 1960s concierge was an apprentice of Zero. All 3 men have the same hairstyle, but while Gustave's has not a hair out of place, Zero has a bit of a wild thing going on on his right, and the 60s concierge has many hairs sticking up and out. I forgot his name, apologies.

yes, you are right with margot wanting to be an adult but then being lost when she really is one!
Why is that actually so relatable lol, I first smoked to look cool and now as an adult it's a mundane addiction
Such a stunning and thorough video. Ugh, i was so sad to see the red line reach closer to the end! Love these
So sweet, thank you!!
Same here
I had the same exact feeling!
I always thought the prison stripes in Grand Budapest were inspired by concentration camp uniforms - since it is set at the dawn of the Third Reich.
Much of what the third Reich did was based off of the American prison system, so I think both you and the video are correct
@@mchjsosde Really? Like what?

So well spoken and articulate, no stutter and research well conducted. Why in the world didn't i know about this channel earlier tf. Loved every sec.
stuttering does not equal uneducated, a lot of people can’t control it.

Best lecture fun vibes eva
I'm loving your channel!!
MINA YOU LOOK AMAZING.
i went to a private school from kindergarten to 4th grade (1999-2005) and saddle shoes were still a uniform requirement even after I left!
Great video! Just wanted to point out that the lapels on Gustav's tailcoat are the traditional peaked lapels, not notched lapels (10:00)
I sweat to god you are the eyebrow wizard of my dreams bahaha 💕💗
ahh moonrise kingdom!!
You are a genius. Love everything you do
