Bought it for around 150 USD a few weeks ago and logged around 30 miles so far. Very comfortable and responsive shoes. Definitely the best Timp so far. The Max Trac has definitely some issues in wet or very technical conditions, but to be fair, I find the traction much better in comparison to previous versions of the Timp. If they would only put a vibram outsole, it would be the perfect training shoe!
Just got them on Sunday and ran a half marathon in the first time. Can’t complain at all, went from Hoka speedgoat 5s to the Timp 4. Muscle a little sore for adjusting but love the fit
I have the Timp 4s and I absolutely love mine. They are my first pair of trail running shoes and I wanted a shoe with a lot of cushion, that would be good for trail, gravel and road running. So far, I absolutely love them. I wear them everywhere!!
Totally agree. Straight out of the box is fits and feels great, but that said i do find it a little too “safe”, missing the bounce and pop of the MB and not quite the same ground feel as the LP. Great review GR - nice work.
I've been an avid user of Altras ever since The One back in 2014. I have very wide, very flat, feet which makes Altra one of the few shoe brands I can wear regularly. Over all the years, the Timp 1.5 has been my favorite Altra shoe. It had that oversized Altra fit which you could lock down securely. It was soft yet still responsive. It also weighed less than the Lone Peak at the time. Since the Timp 1.5, every new version has suffered from the same lack of volume in the midsole. So much so that jumping up a full size was not enough to correct it. I've bought and returned every version of the Timp and will be attempting that with this Timp 4 in the near future. Here's to hoping for happy feet!
I ran the Zion 100k in the Timp 4. The shoe feels great with a good heal lock down. The max Trac is starting to peal away. My big toe is already poking out the top. With about 120 miles it seems early to have that much wear. Not as much traction as the Olympus but more than the timp 2. Overall I really like the shoe and want it to last a while. It has become my favorite daily trail running shoe.
This is constantly my experience with Altra as well. I got about 100 mi before they literally started falling apart, uppers blowing out, etc etc. This was years ago, sad to see its still happening. Hoka gives me 300 mi and the shoe is usually entirely intact, just not enough bounce for me to want to keep running in it.
This is great hands-on feedback. I've found the same thing across the Altra line - shoes are very limited in their ability to last. I've had better experience with the Timp 4, but at just under 100 miles, we'll see how long they go...
@@wadeduvall7026 years ago? i thought the torins were supposed to last. lol. but i did not wear them a lot back then and picking them up years later def doesn't bode well as parts deteoriated/deteoriates much faster vs a new shoe i guess......lol
I just ran a 50 k in these here in Texas. You got all the main points that I liked about it! Timps have been on my feet for a while and these are the best version, in my opinion. I had to use the rock plates from the Altra superiors to protect me for this rocky race. It worked very well!
Great review! I was extremely excited after putting hands on this shoe a bit heavy for my taste but for a daily trainer. Until after four runs the upper completely ripped on the medial left foot we’re it meets the foam. I also felt the heel cup was a bit shallow for my feet.
Another great review, Ethan. I agree with the MaxTrac. I live in the UK and my LPs grip is pretty useless and I’m not confident in the wet. When it get’s less than dry I switch to my inov8s.
I've been running in some lone peak 5's that are 'squished out' not cushioned as new. I picked up a pair of these timps off somone who probably runs of asphalt; I found them great for dust track and sections of road - but a bit awkward on narrow tracks. 'Technical' parts where feet were closer together were tricky and I'd have preferd a wider forefoot, with less 'shoe' under the heel, for more agressive running. I always seem to want a more streamlined sole at the heel, and less stability. A hybrid between these and peaks, lmao could be made. Only wore them on dry and they made me run more from the middle of my foot, than me tippy toes, except for uphill (not great for uneven ground). Better for long distance I imagine, but craving wider (maybe can lace more thoughtfully) and time will tell for durability. Mixed coments on here, tincy bit less stack would be nice. Does anybody know how wide these compare to the Altra 'outroad'? Thanks for review.
Dude you should review the Outroad from Altra. I'm sure you'll have some similar comments based on your opinions of the outsole on this one but it does seem like a great show that can go from road to trail
The biggest thing I noticed (and the reason I didn’t buy them) about the Timp 4 was the midsole. I REALLY wanted it to feel sort of “plush”. Maybe I’m weird but I test the midsole like I check a bike tire, I squeeze it on the sides, and these feel over-inflated. Maybe the foam softens up after a hundred or so miles, but I’m not willing to buy them to find out.
Great review! Thank you! Really enjoy your videos! Have to say something about that heel subject. For me Altra's are only shoes I can use, because those soft, flexible (no plastic inside) and comfortable heels. For example Lone Peaks are perfect for my feet. The reason is Haglund's deformity. That's quite common injury for runners (example: Anton Krupicka). Injury where you get extra bone to your heel which irritates achilles. So if your shoes have hard heel cups you get lot of pain, because it irritates that Haglund pump. For me Timp 3 has been only Altra shoe that doesn't feel good because heel is so low. It's flexible, but strangely low.
Ooh, have you ever done a film about your absolute all time fave shoe? I still haven't found one and I'm currently reviewing 15 pairs!!! Sometimes I feel like custom shoes is the way to go!
I had the shoe for about a month, which included a 35 miler, and had around 130 miles on the shoe. After the long run, it felt like I had broken through the midsole and heel cushioning. From then on the shoe felt like I was stepping on a roll of quarters under my arch! I was really bummed because I loved the shoe. I also have learned that Altra's have 3 different shapes so I'll only be running in the Original shape from now cause I still love my Olympus' and Lone Peak's!
Finally someone calling out the Altra sock liners! My superior 4 liners were indented after my first 5 mile run in them, they're typically garbage. Surprised you did not call out the weight on this one too, it gained a bit.
Yeah, Altra liners have always been a real problem. Good call on the weight gain, I should've included that for sure. I think I looked past it with all the changes to materials with this version.
@@TheGingerRunner I ran a lot of miles in the Timp 2. One pair had a great upper and made it 350+ miles, the other pair ripped at like 80. You mentions Topo in the review, surprised you haven’t reviewed the Mtn Racer 2 yet.
I actually ... really like the Timp 4 (but not a previous Timp-er). A little more thicc-boi than LP6, but I find the Timp4 heel/lock and forefoot comfort great. I agree that MaxTrac needs to be uh... upgraded or just ditch it and go full Vibram (anything). A great dry trail cruiser and that's how I'm using it for long Colorado trail miles here. Not sure I'd race in it though. Nice review, Ethan! EDIT (August): torn upper after 150 miles, MaxTrac worn off forefoot. Thus, NOT durable. Sad. Midsole is still alive, but everything else is no bueno. :(
I miss my Timp 1.5s. I had several pairs. Every version afterwards slowly worked its way closer and closer to a hybrid road/trail shoe. Just going from the 1.5 to 2 the lugs were noticeably shallower. I just slip all over the trails. 3 and 4 just keep moving those goal posts further away from a true trail shoe.
First I got 9.5 too tight in front. Have tried it daily for everywhere . In three month the heel inner side start to tear apart. Last month got another on this time size 10. This one was loose... too loose! The front on toe side look like dented in rubber protection end side guess because too loose I love them. They are comfortable with enough cushion and stability but all four Altra I bought till now had problem with size and heel inside material and did not last for more than 8 months! Not sure to get next one or not!
After ditching Hokas I’ve gone back to Altra. Couldn’t be more happier with the Timp 4. Best fitting Altra I ever had. Half of my runs are on concrete trails as well.
The looks remind me of the Nike Pegasus Trail 3. If the price was the same as the Peg Trail, I'd try it. Maybe I'll snag a 4 when the 5 comes out next year.
Hi GR. I have the Timp 4 and like them. I don't use them to run, but rather hike/walk. I have only put about 40 miles on them walking. I am doing the Camino Santiago (a 500 mile pilgrimage across northern Spain) in April-May and considering the Timp 4 as my shoe of choice. My concern is it will breakdown long before I complete the 500 miles. You mentioned in your video they are longer lasting. Do you know or have a guess as to how long (mleage) they will last? Thank you.
I really wish more brands started doing drainage holes like that. That is probably my biggest gripe with the Salomon Ultra Glide, once water gets in, your feet are slushing around for the rest of the run.
Was tempted with the shoe because of that exact feature, going into the hot/humid season where I run. However My experience with Maxtrac in the same hot/humid conditions in other Altras makes it a big no no (as opposed to Vibram lite base on the MB, which is what I went for)

The timp 4 is nearly perfect. The heel needs to be wider. The lugs need to be a little thicker. I get great traction with them but they are too shallow for mud. I wear mid weight socks with them because the insole texture is rough and you can feel the crease like he said. Normal weight sock covers all of that. Great shoe!
Timp 2 user here. I love the shoe, but same gripes about the grip. I mean come on! Really!!!? It's like no one tested the shoe before sending it to market. It's embarrassing really.
They took away the quantic midsole in the Timps, which, in my opinion, held up better over time than the ego and really made the shoe more stable for me. I also don’t like the new less aggressive soles/lugs, and I dislike the drainage holes that cause the inside of the shoe to feel weird over time. They ruined my favorite shoe. Quite the bummer. The Timp 2s and 3s were my favorites.
I've been running in Timps for years and loved the Timp 2. This shoe was terrible for me. I have no idea how people are getting a good fit with this shoe but it would NOT lock to my heel no matter what I did. I tried multiple sizes as well as lacings. It just wouldn't stop slipping. I guess I didn't try going doing a full size from my Timp 2's, but that seems like it wouldn't be necessary. Overall really disappointed in this one.
wking, YES! THANK YOU!! That’s what I’m saying! The quantic midsole is what made the Timps a cut above the rest...well, at least above the Lone Peaks. The Ego foam got too squishy and floppy in just a few short weeks. I don’t know what shoe I’m going to thru-hike in now.
Timp 4 is so good and so bad at the same time. Out of the box they're ALMOST amazing. Super squishy, super comfortable, super grippy and super sexy, but heel lock sucks and tongue sucks. They're surprising fast and nimble for a max squish trail shoe. But 125 miles later, they're toast. Upper is torn, mesh on the side is shredded and the tread is damn near bald. 125 miles! I've had road race super shoes last 2x longer than that... Altra, for the love of the shoe Gods, get your game together with that upper. Use the Lone Peak upper material, at least. Use the Escalante tongue design. Put an Ego Max and Ego Pro dual layer midsole and a carbon plate in that thing and ditch that drain hole design. Put some Vibram Litebase on the bottom and call it the Timp FKT or Timp Racer and collect $$$.
Congratulations to the marketing department in Altra for increasing their market share while simultaneously screw!ing up the whole range. Stop experimenting because the Superior Is now the only real Altra left. It has retained the characteristics that established Altra and every version is improved. And the price is right.

Kinda disappointed in my Timp 4’s especially at $160. A solid ounce heavier than my Topo Ultraventures. (I weighed them) Heel lock for me is not good…. Which is weird because that isn’t a problem I have with Altras or any other brand of shoe. I haven’t tried them in mud but I don’t expect good things. I guess I didn't try going doing a full size from my Timp 2's, but that seems like it wouldn't be necessary. Overall really disappointed in this one.
This is important feedback, especially from someone who has used other versions. Man, Altra has been super hit/miss for me on fit, that's for sure!
What's the shoe on the second from top shelf that's behind the AlphaFly?
yessss
I wonder if the orange trend is related to the relatively recent revelations around the residential schools? (orange shirt day)
I really like the TIMP 2. But the TIMP 4 - specially the sole - looks a bit???
Why did they get rid of Quantic midsole? It was so much better than Ego Max
@The Crazy Amateur Runner Lies and slander!
wking, YES!
I've enjoyed running in Timps and Lone Peak but Altra's pricing has driven me away. There are better offerings in the price ranges.
Such as...?
Congratulations to the marketing department in Altra for increasing their market share while simultaneously screw!ing up the whole range. Stop experimenting because the Superior Is now the only real Altra left. It has retained the characteristics that established Altra and every version is improved. And the price is right.
@The Crazy Amateur Runner Superior v2 was the best imho
great review..
I had the 1.5, and after running in that, I have been tempted to come back.., I never have though. soooo, I’m probably gonna pass on these too.. 160 🤨
Flirt thought...thinking 0f Prince: You got the l00k! (dats the shoes) If you're on a bus...little kids can grab a hold of the straps for stability-serious; that's a good lookin pair of shoes!
I am up for a try...so that will be a BUY~ in the Autumn Fall 0range. LeaF it to altrA+I L0ve the color.~..................but yep...many are following a color trend.
If you stopped wearing socks, we wouldn’t know where your legs end and the shoes begin this year. ;@)
My Topo Mtn Racer 2’s and Ultraventures are going to remain as my go-to trail shoes. Sorry Altra!
Lol, whatever. I guess the scale lies.
It kind of looks like a hoka but without the stupid foot shape.
@The Crazy Amateur Runner I agree. Like the Hoka for example. Did you misread the "without" perhaps?
i dont hokas lol
Couldn’t say anything good about the look, it’s just not a beautiful looking shoe
