  • This video introduces you to Sculpt Nouveau, a company that specializes in the manufacture of chemicals that create various patina finishes on different metals. On this project I prepped the steel tubing with a belt sander creating a wood grain like finish and then used Black Magic for a custom modern headboard. Black magic was applied in two layers and the burnished with Scotch-brite pads to reveal some of the metallic creating a gun metal appearance.
    Black Magic can be purchased from the Sculpt Nouveau website. www.sculptnouv...

    I use black magic all the time and made the same mistake at first. Key and I mean key to not getting the surface rust is, DO NOT LET IT DRY before washing with water. As in either add more black magic by brush or spray till desired patina is achieved.
    Also as soon as it's washed off with water dry it off with a rag ASAP. takes a bit of practice but the results are amazing. Hope this helps anyone that uses the product great stuff, I almost returned mine since I was getting mostly rusty result myself.

    Tip of advice is use a smaller diameter square tube that's longer that you run through your work and you lay that on the saw horse and can rotate your work with no marking and it stays flat.

      @@marcmorson7642 it is easy when I watch the struggle happen to someone else to evaluate it. I wouldn't have thought of it if I was the one doing it. I would have made some odd contraption that wouldn't work better, actually worse most likely and probably finally get it done and put together then it would click. Next time...... I'd forget and the cycle will repeat and I'll get more and more pissed each time 😂

    Honestly I watched my dad when I was 10 build a chandelier out of a wagon wheel for our cabin. He then went to wal mart and baught some brand new old style lanterns. He sand blasted them and installed light bulbs with electronics then sprayed bleach water on them and left them outside for a few day days on the Oregon coast they, they look super rustic and old then he fogged some semi gloss clear on it and there they have been suspended in age for 30 years now

    That headboard looks freaking awesome.
    As a diesel mechanic myself who loves to spend time in the garage doing metal fabrication myself, and on top of that, I have natural oily hair, and not going bald 😂, I feel your pain in the headboard getting darker over time on my side of the bed.
    Our headboard actually have light fabric cushions. The first thing I did was to remove all those cushion blocks and covered them with heavy plastic. After 16 years, the fabric still looks like new.

    Im late to the party, but this was cool. Ive been waffling on what to do in the trunk of my 69 GTO. Most people doing custom a-bodies end up boxing in the trunk with upholstered panels because the wheel wells are hideous, the trunk mounts are worse, and the rest of it is pretty bad too. I havent found a single example of someone taking the time to do custom metal back there so im doing it. But i wasnt sure if i should paint it or clear the metal with a satin or matte finish. Im glad theres this staining option and the burnished look is a winner. Then i can also match the jewelry box up front and have a bit of it in the dash im making. This was helpful, thank you.

    Just tried applying SN midnight black to a steel bench frame, had the same rust issue. Gonna try again, SN recommends scuffing with scotch brite before rinsing also, to get a more even finish. I also had a ton of problems with runs and enevenness cuz I am applying to a finished bench (surfaces at all angles).

      You can use those bolts in metal projects too like furniture, tables, metal trunks or bars. Just drill a hole and weld them from the inside after you cut them. Remember they are for the look not to keep the piece together. They look like metal rivets and give the piece an industrial look.

    If you were so inclined, you could use hot saturated copper chloride(freshly made from muriatic and copper wire is dark brown with lots of copper 1 and copper 2 ions) to brush the steel tube. This will reduce on bare steel to apply a brushed on copper layer(no electricity needed if the steel is clean of scale and oil). You can then use the ammonia based patina products(or 3% ammonia water and salt) soaked onto paper towels and wrapped in cellophane to slow the evaporation and keep the chemicals on the steel longer. Not super hard and would likely be very unique. A coat of clear acrylic will make it more durable and make the colors(purple and greens) POP.

    Im curious what your opinion would be for using this product on a bare metal 69' C-10? I'm thinking green or blue and going for that kind of rat rod-ish patina look...maybe some black around the bottom of the windows here and there? Im wondering how the finish would hold up to the elements, or if it would rust through...i see that you did a matte clear coat over your bed frame (which turned out sick by the way!)...that might be the answer🤔...

    • @GarageFab
      @GarageFab  Рік тому +1

      I like where you’re going with it! It’s definitely got potential to be really cool. Being a less common color method already makes it much more interesting.
      I can tell you that this stuff is not a “finish”. Even after coloring, the metal is still technically bare. If you like the way it turns out and you want to keep it that way you must cover it with some sort of clear coat. Talking to a knowledgeable painter would be a good idea to learn what you would need to do to get the clear to stick to the bare metal.
      Let me know what you find out if you get that far. As mentioned in the video I plan to do Caroline‘s bed floor this way out of 4 inch wide steel rectangle tubing. I will likely just have it clear powder coated. 🤷‍♂️

I’ve got a whole cabinet full of their products from various projects over them past few years. Great company and customer support too! (And I have no affiliation with them either, lol)

    Why use black magic over, say, phosphoric acid? Aren't they doing the same thing (making a black oxide coating)?

      You would want to use Black Magic over phosphoric acid if you have a bunch of extra money you don’t want. ☺️

      @@GarageFab HA! I'm just getting into experimenting with metal and patinas (after working with wood for years), phosphoric acid looks similar (and MUCH cheaper! a gallon for less than half of Black Magic), especially if there's a clear coat over it. Can this work on a bbq smoker?

    • @GarageFab
      @GarageFab  3 роки тому

      Definitely doable with some research. Contact Sculpt Nouveau and confirm you get the right chemical for the metal your using. After that the challenge will be finding a clearcoat that can withstand the heat. Perhaps try VHT Flame Proof Satin Clear. I've never used it but other VHT products have served me well.
      Without clearcoat your finish will change the moment it gets wet so you really need to preserve it.
      Good luck! I'd love to see the finished product. 👏

      Yeah I agree. I bought a gun bluing kit with a 3 ounce bottle of blue which is like $15. So buying enough of those to fill a spray bottle would probably cost a couple hundred dollars.
