    Love this! Donating beach gear to local youth groups is a great way to give back

      Thank you for watching Laci! It really bums us out when we see beach gear just left next to the rubbish bins at the beach. We'd love to hear of other suggestions for places to donate if you or anyone else has more thoughts on this. Aloha~

    I always buy a couple wave storms from Costco on the way to Poipu and then at the end of the trip we actually hand them to local kids. If you give anything to a donation center they will turn around and sell it. Beach chairs, umbrellas, surfboards, boogie boards, just hand them to local families, or pay it forward and give it to some other tourist that just got there, they are always super appreciative and stoked.

    We went to Oahu and my plan was to buy souvenirs as Xmas gifts last year. We bought a lot at the swap meet because I wanted to support locals and small vendors. Not to say we didn't buy a few things at Walmart, but within reason ya know? We also hit up all of the goodwills where we had to buy more luggage and I found some clothes. I was very passionate about diving into the island itself and reusing vs purchasing. And yeah, wore protective sunscreen cuz I wanted to keep the honu safe. ❤️ 🐢🌊
    It's my goal to make it to every island that I can. I feel it in my bones. I'd so wanna move there if there was air conditioning. Idk how older people do it!!!

    I was born and raised on Kauai but I left Kauai in 1992 and lived on Oahu 1992 to 2000, then I moved to the northwest in 2000, when I come back to visit my parents on Kauai, I’ll always ask for Kamaina and I’ll tell them I was born and raised on Kauai but with my dark skin complexion I still blend in with the locals.
    Lots of people I do know still remembers who I am after being away from Kauai for so long, so it’s good to be born and raised on Kauai, in fact, I get Kamaina when I rent a car too.
    For example, we reserved a car online via Budget online and when we arrived at Lihue Airport to get the car, the girl that helped us is a good friend of my sister who now resides in western NY, she recognized my last name and asked if I knew Debra and I replied that’s my sister, then from there we were treated well and got the Kamaina.

    It always amazes me what people do and what they think is ok. Great list! I loved the note about the sunscreen. We learned about this before our trip and purchased all environmentally-friendly brands. I have to admit, I'm a bit nervous for the top 5... especially if rental car off-roading ranks. :)

    Here's a story for you! A few years ago, I was on Maui for a Medical Conference and then extended our stay by going to Kona on the Big Island for another week! Being out in the sun and going to the Beach for 2 weeks total, we all got pretty dark and tanned! Everywhere we went to eat, people constantly asked us where we were from! We thought they were all just being friendly. Once after dinner at a fine restaurant on our last night in Kona, I received our check and couldn't figure out the math on our bill. So I called our server about it! Interestingly, his first response was to ask what island we were were from! When I said California, he blushed and informed me of that Kamina discount and the reason for it! That's how I first learned of it! So I didn't want to stiff the guy from his tip, so I did some quick math to add back the discounted amount in order to pay my full share plus a 15% server's tip for him since I could easily afford the full amount since it was going to be a business deduction later anyhow!

    • @DrAlvinEng
      @DrAlvinEng 4 роки тому

      LOL! Because we were Asian and Chinese and darkly tanned, they all told us that we looked like Natives!

    • @OnHawaiiTime
      @OnHawaiiTime  4 роки тому

      Great story Alvin! We also always tip off of the regular price of the bill before the discount. We also feel that the server should still get the same amount based on good service. ;)

    Good advice,too bad about kipu,is the road still closed to ke'e beach,have you ever hike to the blue hole?they should let people hike to manawaiopuna falls or charge a fee,not everyone can take a helicopter tour,have you been to anahola beach,how come they don't repair the road to polihale beach

    • @OnHawaiiTime
      @OnHawaiiTime  5 років тому

      Aloha John! We truly appreciate the feedback and questions. Yes, Ke'e beach is still closed. They are working hard on repairing the road and building an actual parking lot up there which will be nice in the future. The plan is to limit the number of visitors in that area in the future which will make it more enjoyable for everyone. Brodi did a hike to the blue hole several years ago and it takes HOURS and only recommended when the weather is clear and not raining because flash flooding can occur which would prevent you from making it back....then you'd be forced to pay for a helicopter ride. As for Manawaiopuna Falls...it's located on private property so the land owners don't allow hiking into the falls. Yes, Anahola beach is great. We love to go to Kauai Couples Massage which is located at Anahola beach at the Camp ground. The camp ground is a better place to hang out at the beach rather than the beach park because the beach park is more of a place for locals, not visitors. The road to Polihale is repaired and accessible at present; however, with the rain in the winter time and all the traffic going out there the potholes can get big. Thank you so much for watching!
