Probably the first UA-camr that hasn’t shamed The Auto crowd, big ups! Been watching your channel for a minute and am super inspired to grab a Subaru BRZ or WRX soon!
I had to go through all those decisions last fall and ended up with a 15 STI, couldn't be happier. Your channel has helped solidify that decision. Also congrats on 9k sub! OOOOUH!
Good shit man! I went from a 2017 WRX Premium I had for over 3 years to my 2020 STI I have had now for 4 months now and am so glad I made the change! The handling and over all driving experience is so much more refined! Anyone on the fence about making the change should just do it...imo! Reminds me of my old Evo X in some ways but even better!
'14 Hatch WRX was my dream car. I found one in '17 with 30k and snagged it up. It fried a wiring harness the day after I took it home and I never got to drive it again. Sold it back and held out until they released a new version, bought a '20 WRX to hold me over.
I got a 2012 GR hatch recently from an old man, original owner, with 60k on it without any mods other than a HKS BOV. its extremely versatile! the trunk space is awesome when you least expected. Didnt have the money for an STI but boy does it gives me a smile everyday, also a plus+ the iconic rumble with a muffler delete 😁 music to my ears everyday.
Couple things i would add. Sti gearbox ratios suck for dailying. Super short so its a pain in stop and go traffic and red lights and the like. Could also mention the fact that most tuners wont let you go too far with the CVT. Cobb doesnt even offer the stage 2 map for it. Also the VA cars are so much more comfortable than the GD and GR models. Seats, interior materials, etc. Other than that id agree with pretty much everything. IMO if the FA wrx had an sti rack it would be almost perfect, sucks they they went with an electronic rack. Bang on about the hatch lol.
WRX is the reason I pick because I can drive it daily and better gas efficient. It's a fun car to drive around in hills with corners but my WRX is bone stock and I can't wait to add some mods into it until warranty is up.
@Captain Buff The Third Captain I couldn't agree more. Bigger turbo, bigger brakes, indestructible transmission and upgraded interior and exterior. STI is the only way to go. If I buy it I want it all. No offense to the wrx. They are nice too. And yes I'm a bit parcel to the STI because I own a 2005 🤣🤣🤣
I have a 19 WRX and it's honestly so much fun!!! Yea ultimately I would prefer an STI for that sexy rumble but an exhaust on the FA still sounds nice!! It's hard to go wrong with either car!!

While on my last 2 hours I came across another WRX or STI we were both pretty excited to see the other and he had a good puppers in the back. I would choose a sti just because it has a better trans and power and the raw feeling and I’m so done with modding cars I want to buy a fun car and grow and mature and just enjoy it and maintain it

I have a 2020 WRX CVT with EyeSight. Let me help you out with some of the ins and outs of it. The CVT and Eyesight tech in the FA WRX is actually pretty cool. From the factory Eyesight is all turned off. It only warns you of stuff and controls nothing other than collision detection at the last possible second. Then it will hit the brakes hard. Again, it will warn you first with a sound and HeadsUp display of Red, Yellow and Green lights at the bottom of the windshield. But only if you don't react fast enough does the car apply the brakes. The factory says that EyeSight can stop the car in time if you are traveling 40 MPH or under, almost 100% of the time. Obviously the slower you are going the higher the percentage. At 41 MPH and above the chances of a complete stop in time goes down as the speed goes up. But they do say that the impact will be lessened. That's the only thing it will do if you leave the basic system on. But if you want, you can disable all of the Eyesight functions completely. But why? I have tried to let the Eyesight steer the car while on the highway using the Lane Departure tech. It's weird to say the least. And a bit scary. Its more of a bounce between the lane markers. But unlike other car manufactures, Subaru makes you have to turn that feature on. It's not on all the time. The Adaptive Cruise Control is actually pretty cool and I use that a lot when the highway is open. You can adjust the distance at which the Eyesight keeps you away from cars in front of you. When you approach another car going slower, a Green light stays on and the WRX slows to match that speed. Once the lane is clear it returns to the higher speed. The distance is based on how many seconds distance at that speed between cars. I have mine set to 6 seconds and could go down to 4 if I wanted. The 8 second distance is an eternity. I drive A LOT on the highway in bumper to bumper traffic as well. And to tell the truth, I'm sort of done with manual transmissions in that situation. It's incredibly tiring to always be on and off the clutch for miles on the highway. And after a long day of work where I'm on my feet all day, I'm freaking tired! I will totally use the help from the Eyesight Collision Detection to help me not slam into the rear of the car in front of me. And then the CVT is sort of neat if you play with it and understand it. Of course you can let it be a full automatic transmission, but you can put it into manual mode and play with the paddle shifters. Its actually kind of fun. In S# mode it gives you 8 forward ratios (in I or S mode you get 6 forward ratios). So the shifts are quick and super fast. No rev hang at all! The ratios are so close that you have to be very attentive to get the most out of the transmission while in manual. Overall, I'm enjoying my car just as much as other people with manual transmissions are.
@@Smeedia That's good, but do understand, the CVT in that car is not the same unit used behind the WRX FA 20. Subaru beefed up the trans for higher torque application, And then changed the way the differentials work, They stole some parts from the STi bin and some parts from older WRX piles to create the entire system for the CVT WRX's. So its more than just the same set up used in your GFs car or the standard manual WRX. Its a hybrid only used in the CVT WRX. Sort of the best of both worlds. Engineering Explained has a cool video covering the 3 different types of AWD systems that Subaru currently used. Of course the king of the heap is the system used in the STi, but closely followed by the CVT system and then the standard system is the manual WRX and then the rest. But they Eyesight systems should be very similar.
2019 WRX CVT Premium. Its my weekender. Mature driver now so no manual anymore unless i can afford a 3rd car then i would get an old STI for some fun. Wife also can drive so that was the main reason, if only they made a car with both transmissions, paddle shifting not the same. I have a 14 Forester XT and i can say is both cars are like night and day. With all the new safety features now available its making us very lazy. No performance mods here just comfort and handling mods as i want to keep it stock and quiet as possible for cruising, and listening to some music and when you gun it just the sound of the engine only. Anyone looking to get a WRX or STI, either one, if you cant get an old Forester XT. Cant go wrong with a Turbo Subie.
This video is what made me take that for sure step to get a WRB 2020 WRX with the performance package. The brembos and recaros with the FA give me the best of both worlds!
@@ianholmquist8492 still no regrets or any urges to have gotten a STi. I’m 31, single, no one to impress or make happy other than myself. I don’t need some fancy transmission, an unreliable engine, and steering responsive lights to drive to work everyday and grocery get.
Nice work , usually the WRX is a gateway to the STI , mostly because of price ! If you can afford an STI then do it ! A built WRX is fun cause you can put the STI back in it's place ! I love the older GD body cars because that rough around the edges feel connects you to the car ! The best way to get what you want is start with you're favorite body style find a shell or someone's beater with a good rust free body ! You are right the 6 speed is a must have and the JDM transmission is the best !
I can agree with you 150% on choice of car when it comes to gas mileage! I test drove a sti and yeah that gearbox was the first WOW i commented on to the salesman, and yes he did try to get me in a sti, and yeah i wanted one, but the shift mods do help the normal wrx make it tolerable :-)
Im a little late, but when you screw your wrx up its a bit cheaper to fix. Probably the ultimate deal breaker since you can be more adventurous without the headache.
@@subierekt literally the worst sounding boxer engine ever made by Subaru. The ej20 is much better. Too bad we never got the final edition ej20 sti in the states. I would have gotten that.
i bought mine specifically for fun gas saving and daily driving, my only thing is i have owned nothing but trucks over the passed 8 years mostly diesel but its hard to have fun with putting money in a diesel with emission crack downs it sounds like the 70 era again where they killed the muscle cars for a while and had gas shortages. i love my cars and im part of every car seen that i can be apart of but also afford at the same time
Bought a 2017 wrx premium with 28 thousand miles didnt pay to much but after watching your videos i wanna test drive an sti now but also would enjoy slowly upgrading it myself just gonna take time and money and watching lots of your videos keep up the good work 👍
On the GDI versions have you looked into performing and Induction Service every 15K with a shop? I recommend finding a shop that has the BG Induction service. i have had great results with that service
How much of a difference in the snow do the front and rear LSDs in the STI make vs the WRX? Figure you might have some experience in WA on some slippery intersections and side roads less plowed (with great snow tires on either version of course). Irrelevant on the street even in harsher winter conditions? If you can't tell, I'm trying to downsell myself into a more practical WRX. '16 hyperblue is
They make a diffrence, but also depends on how bad conditions are. If you have a WRX with proper snow tires you'll be solid 90-95% if the time the STIs ability to adjust makes it easier from what ive seen trudging through snow 🔥🙏
I miss the WRX wagon. I really wish they would sell the Levorg STi in the states...because I would buy one TOMORROW! Had an ‘03 Bugeye now I’m in a ‘19 STi. Love these cars!
EJ motors are everywhere and JDM low mileage motors are priced cheap. In all honesty there’s no need to rebuild an EJ unless you plan on pushing more. Those who enjoy lifting them or more handling than power. You can find motors every where. If you can swap motor yourself. Your golden and set and should never have issues with not finding parts.
Haha a important one! I had a 2002 bugeye sti down here in Australia EJ207, exhaust, intake and tune. Thing was a beast and sounded awesome especially with the high 8k RPM My partner just sold her 2016 WRX which was a much more refined and responsive driving experience but it just sounded like any other regular old 4 banger to me.
while car shopping, i found a 2017 sti and called my insurance company to get an estimate on my monthly insurance, NOTE i am a 20 year old male so your price may change... I have no speeding tickets on my record, 490$ a month... we called another insurance company to get another quote... 435$ a month. That’s for full coverage.
The 'EyeSight' crash avoidance system Subaru uses is the absolute best on the market. I would recommend watching the videos of people testing it against other manufacturers. However, because it is soooooo good at what it does, everything you do around it requires it to be recalibrated. Great video!!!!
I'm going to have to play with it a little bit more, the girlfriends Impreza sport has eye sight so I just need to play around with it. Appreciate the feedback and input!
i have a 18 wrx and plan on putting in the sti trans and dccd. the fa is the future and if the sti would had that motor i would have bought one in the first place.
I love my old EJ20 GGA WRX (wagon). It’s fast, has a super clean interior and I think it sounds decent with equal length headers unlike the FA engine. The only thing I want is that sweet STi 6 speed, the old 5 speed isn’t great. Car has been super reliable and still fun to drive. Not worth much to most people but to me it’s a keeper. I’m not super impressed with the new WRX/STi models, especially the 2022 WRX.
I love my wrx hatchback being a mobile photographer I love having the extra space I picked it up for 6500 yes a sweet come up and I eventually swapped it to a 6 speed so I can have a little more fun driving it in the empty streets at night
I’d choose Sti. Modding car has some pros and cons in doing it and i’m not very in to it. There’s always risk in modding cars in general not only in to STI but like i said in General. 😊
I’ve always wanted a STi since the early gran turismo days on PlayStation 2 , I mean if I get a wrx i wouldn’t mind it at all, but I just don’t wanna settle .
Smeedia it’s great! I live in Ontario so lots of snow, it’s handles it like nothing. Very happy with my purchase for sure. Your videos actually help a lot with easy small things that I (not very experienced) can do. Keep up the great videos!
@@Smeedia heard alot of good reports of being able to push 380-400bhp with them. Which has always been a goal of mine. Should I have bought an STI instead, yes probably (for the gearbox), but I proper love this car and the journey I've had with it. I'd rather keep it now and buy a 6speed box. 🙋🏻♂️😎
love my 15 wrx E30 tuned was looking at a 2017 sti but seen the lonely wrx in the back of the loot piad $23k for it with 43k miles..... 150k miles later a still pushing with no problem wanted a sti but the wife has a 2013 sti. Booth cars are amazing
I have a 2016 base wrx. I loveeee the car. However I’ve always wanted a hatch sti. Found one for sale but it’s slightly modded with like 120k on it. Only reason I’m hesitant is mine is paid for and I’ve gone overly crazy on the maintenance and I’ve rebuilt fa20 engines and just not familiar with the ej engines
At the end of the day they are both Subies 👍, family, and that’s what really counts. Difference is what makes things interesting! The cars are brothers, big brother clearly has several advantages but little brother has a few tricks up its sleeves and is no slouch. How many videos are there showing a modified 2015+WRX eating an 2015+STI for lunch for those who live and die for the drag race or rolling race; too many to count. And when a modified 2015+WRX gets way way better fuel economy than an OEM or modified 2015+STI without question, which means cheaper operating cost/ mile, now there is something to really ponder. Save $$$ and drive more miles whats not to like. AOS and EGR deletes also solve valve oiling issue on DIT FA 20.
Nope, my tune is pretty shit. I can run on e85 0r 91 when I put normal gas I get close to 18 or more. I don’t push it because the turbo seal needs to be replaced.
For fuel efficiency, fa engines are wonderful . It is just now the good stuff kills the engine. And I calculate by miles. So my car only able to make 300miles/tank that’s maxed out.
I want a blobeye hatch so badly. When I first got into subies it was the blobeye era and I've refined my taste to hatchbacks over the years. Don't get me wrong, I love them all but the blobeye wrx hatchback will always be my favorite
Yo Smeedia! I think the eyesight has to do with the windshield actually. I would suggest to warn other subu owners that that windshield replacement cost is heavy.
2012 WRX, the 08-10s have bearing issues and are more prone to failure. I've had both a 2008 STi and a 11 WRX and would be a safer bet depending on what you wanted to do with the car

I haven't used the JDM trans before but have heard wonderful things about it! And the WRX is a gateway drug into Subaru 😅
What about 2004 STi
Also another pro to the gd style wrx if u buy a wrx u can easily sti swap the entire build for pretty cheap and its a lot of fun
The gear box can definitely be made better on the WRX with some mods, regardless not a bad choice!
It terrifies me on how tight your car is in your shop rn XD
Theres like 1/4" of room 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love them but still dont know which one i want and i will be modifying it of course just love that rumble with a blow of valve oh my god
Im a little late, but when you screw your wrx up its a bit cheaper to fix. Probably the ultimate deal breaker since you can be more adventurous without the headache.
13 yr wrx owner. STi owner less than 3 yrs (will be 2 in April).
Just gonna say this....EJ205 wrx > any FA based WRX.
Don't care, fight me.
nah
@@subierekt yup
I've owned all 3. The FA shits on everything. Just feels so much better.
@@subierekt #coolstorybro
@@subierekt literally the worst sounding boxer engine ever made by Subaru. The ej20 is much better. Too bad we never got the final edition ej20 sti in the states. I would have gotten that.
i bought mine specifically for fun gas saving and daily driving, my only thing is i have owned nothing but trucks over the passed 8 years mostly diesel but its hard to have fun with putting money in a diesel with emission crack downs it sounds like the 70 era again where they killed the muscle cars for a while and had gas shortages. i love my cars and im part of every car seen that i can be apart of but also afford at the same time
Bought a 2017 wrx premium with 28 thousand miles didnt pay to much but after watching your videos i wanna test drive an sti now but also would enjoy slowly upgrading it myself just gonna take time and money and watching lots of your videos keep up the good work 👍
Definitely a good experience to be able to drive both, also congrats on the car!
Got my STI, 1 of the reasons is for the MPG. Lol. Was driving a lifted Jeep Wrangler. Soooooo it can be a selling point?
Compared to some other cars the MPG is great lol
Yeah it's better than my old truck and I'm very happy about it
On the GDI versions have you looked into performing and Induction Service every 15K with a shop? I recommend finding a shop that has the BG Induction service. i have had great results with that service
Hey what’s the story on that Louisiana plate hanging on your wall?
Use to live down there when I was at fort Polk 🥳
I think the TR you were referring to on the WRX stands for Tuner Ready.
Thank you! Exactly what I was shooting for!
I miss the WRX wagon. I really wish they would sell the Levorg STi in the states...because I would buy one TOMORROW! Had an ‘03 Bugeye now I’m in a ‘19 STi. Love these cars!
If only Subaru continued with the hatch. Can no longer do a trunk. Sedans and coupes are out.
Here in Utah some of the ski resorts have Subaru reserved parking right at the front.
Thats actually kinda cool 😅🔥
I wish I had an EJ WRX with the STI drivetrain. So I did it.
Did you make a video on the cdiff? I would like to learn about it.
ua-cam.com/video/SROLKZs8LZA/v-deo.html 🙏🙏🙏
Reliability was key and Ej heard too many blown engines and also liked newer engine. Not worth extra money in my opinion.
Duuuuude how about the most important point between the FA and EJ series.... The sound!
I wouldent say the most important but it is a factor 😅🔥
Haha a important one! I had a 2002 bugeye sti down here in Australia EJ207, exhaust, intake and tune. Thing was a beast and sounded awesome especially with the high 8k RPM
My partner just sold her 2016 WRX which was a much more refined and responsive driving experience but it just sounded like any other regular old 4 banger to me.
The 06-07 wrx had Subaru 4 pot/2pot brakes. They weren’t Brembos but they were identical to those in the jdm, edm gd wrx.
They're super good brakes for what they are and significantly cheaper than brembos!
Scrolling through comments here. I think I'm leaning towards WRX simply for the fuel efficiency and reliability on used cars market.
while car shopping, i found a 2017 sti and called my insurance company to get an estimate on my monthly insurance, NOTE i am a 20 year old male so your price may change... I have no speeding tickets on my record, 490$ a month... we called another insurance company to get another quote... 435$ a month. That’s for full coverage.
Oof that is pricey, ive got 2 speeding tickets and am 27 and mine is about $250 a month 😅
Smeedia shit i wish i could get 250 a month, I can’t wait to be 25 and hit that insurance checkpoint so they lower everything.
Didn't have a choice in the UK it was STI or nothing. And they stopped selling the STI in 2018. RIP UK MARKET
😫 hopefully they bring it back at some point. I remember reading the final edition article a few years back
2015 FA20 WRX here and it’s my third subie, love it
Eyyyy, solid car! 😁😁😁
2014 wrx hatch here. Cool vids man. Learning a lot in the subaru game, just got mine.
Congrats on the pick up! And appreciate the support!
What lip and skirts are on that rally blue? So clean!
I got a 2020 WRX and I been watching all your videos and excited to update my my car and dooo tunes when my car is out of warranty lol
Congrats on the new car! 😁🔥
i have a 18 wrx and plan on putting in the sti trans and dccd. the fa is the future and if the sti would had that motor i would have bought one in the first place.
Man your vids are amazing just got my 2019 sti and I love that thing! Keep up the good work.
Congrats on the car! And appreciate the support my friend 🔥😁
Yah I was wondering what the diff is from Impreza WRX, to WRX
Leaning towards the 2020 WRX Premium but that Hawkeye STI was beautiful
Hawkeye is my favorite body style if them all 🔥
2022 almost 2023. Wanting to buy a 2019 sti spec r.
I love my wrx hatchback being a mobile photographer I love having the extra space I picked it up for 6500 yes a sweet come up and I eventually swapped it to a 6 speed so I can have a little more fun driving it in the empty streets at night
I’m watching this like I don’t have a 14 GR hatch in my drive way
TR was for tuner ready, bare bones meant to be modified from the get
I’d choose Sti.
I don't blame you, the WRXs are still very good cars non the less! 😁
I wish I could do a triple thumbs up for your videos, you deserve more subs for sure! I have a 2015 WRX (new to the Subaru world) and I love it!
Appreciate the love and support 🙌 how's the WRX treating you?!
Definitely deserves more subs
Smeedia it’s great! I live in Ontario so lots of snow, it’s handles it like nothing. Very happy with my purchase for sure. Your videos actually help a lot with easy small things that I (not very experienced) can do. Keep up the great videos!
You will notice a lot of waves from other subi drivers! Its a cool community for sure
Tony yeah I’ve noticed already, any questions I’ve had about anything, people from the community answer pretty quickly
I miss my 08 STi and I wish that I still had but I do have a 05 Subaru Legacy GT with a JDM EJ20X swap now and I love it
The 08 STI was my first one and suxked me into the hole, I know the feeling 😫
I read that the VA wrx suspension is 40% stiffer than the 11-14 wrxs.
Thr VA chassis overall is much stiffer, they may have made revisions to the spring rates to compensate for the heavier body as well
Nice video mate!! I've a Blobeye WRX running 350bhp. Gotta admit about the glass 5speed. Got the blast plates on the way 🙈😁😁.
Those blast plates are a solid upgrade for that trans to give it some more strength 🙌🙌
my wrx is a 6 speed manual gearbox (1:18)
love my 15 wrx E30 tuned was looking at a 2017 sti but seen the lonely wrx in the back of the loot piad $23k for it with 43k miles..... 150k miles later a still pushing with no problem wanted a sti but the wife has a 2013 sti. Booth cars are amazing
Still a solid choice! Better price, still very fun and so many options for mods!
I am saving up for a sti and live in Washington state. You said that Washington state has a Subaru tax. What is that?
It's just a mark up on used subarus that people add onto the cars
I can contest to this I have a close friend who paid 28k out the door for a 2013 sti with around 75k miles not too long ago
Dude the subaru tax is the dumbest thing 🙄
I have a 2016 base wrx. I loveeee the car. However I’ve always wanted a hatch sti. Found one for sale but it’s slightly modded with like 120k on it. Only reason I’m hesitant is mine is paid for and I’ve gone overly crazy on the maintenance and I’ve rebuilt fa20 engines and just not familiar with the ej engines
What’s the “Subaru Tax” TIA
Exactly! They're both great cars for their own reasons and one is not better overall than the other IMO
I agree, I've had no issues keeping up or passing Sti's in my WRX during track days, but then again driver mod and a good setup helps
Ej257 since 2004 wow what a run . Have the 06 sti
I have a wrx i built and I would like to buy a blown sti and fix it. I know i can do it!
Where di you got your canards btw?
Rally sport direct 😁
O lol I didn't say I have a 09 hatch with all the bolt ons ready to be put on just waiting on my built headers and up pipe to come in
2 years later the video still bangs
I guess I must have best of both worlds. I have an 06 WRX TR with the six speed trans. Definitely one of my most favorite purchases. 😁
Did you swap the 6 speed in? 👀 I feel like we have talked about this before lol
Smeedia I don’t think so bud lol im a newer subscriber. When I bought mine it already had the 6 speed swap already installed.
I love my 17 WRX, 30+ MPG on the highway with 330whp
Dave my 05 wrx on e85 I get 12-15 combined 😂😂😂
You must stay out of boost, or periodically push the car.
Nope, my tune is pretty shit. I can run on e85 0r 91 when I put normal gas I get close to 18 or more. I don’t push it because the turbo seal needs to be replaced.
@@subarubuildz1738 my comment for Dave. His gas mileage is too good.
I just engine brake and coast a lot when I'm in the city *shrug*
For fuel efficiency, fa engines are wonderful . It is just now the good stuff kills the engine. And I calculate by miles. So my car only able to make 300miles/tank that’s maxed out.
I have GG Blob eye hatch lol as well love the hatches too I am more of wagon person it also comes with high range and low range transmission
I want a blobeye hatch so badly. When I first got into subies it was the blobeye era and I've refined my taste to hatchbacks over the years. Don't get me wrong, I love them all but the blobeye wrx hatchback will always be my favorite
You didn't mention 4eat transmission on older wrx . I have 04 wrx 4eat sedan stock its very fast and i enjoy it :) .
👍
what parts are interchangeable
make a vid!
Especially the sti parts that fit the 5th gen LGT.
Can we see more of your car? I love the wheels and set up. Is it on coils or bags?
It was om bags 🙏 unfortunately no longer have that set up on the car 😭
Yo Smeedia! I think the eyesight has to do with the windshield actually. I would suggest to warn other subu owners that that windshield replacement cost is heavy.
Also very true and it is, the windshield is the same price but whenever replaced subaru had to recalibrate the wholesale system 😖
If you were choosing between a 08 sti with 96k miles or 2012 wrx with 75k miles and $1000 more for the sti?
2012 WRX, the 08-10s have bearing issues and are more prone to failure. I've had both a 2008 STi and a 11 WRX and would be a safer bet depending on what you wanted to do with the car
Learn from mistakes, I've made a lot of them lol. The blast plates really help with the integrity of the trans 🔥
I had an 06 sti it got t boned.. then I bought and 08 335i convertible... Worse decision ever.. I'm looking for an 15 sti now
08-14 model runs are referred to as the "Stink Eye" generation. You can probably guess why.
I've just never liked the name lol gotta be something else we can call them 🤣
Maybe “Sleek Eye” or something, since the hood scoop is less-noticeable than the Hawkeyes? I dunno lmao.
@@cerephus lol I'm rolling with that one 🤣
Smeedia Sounds like a plan, my guy. Also, thanks for the video. I may decide to pick up a Hawkeye or "Sleek-eye" WRX to replace my aging Outback, thanks to your videos. 👌
