    It may be worth noting that if your destination is not in the city centre nor along the rail line, you can still transfer with the same ticket to other methods of public transport, such as trams and the metro.

    There is too circle lines serving from airport to Helsinki so no matter which train you take. Left or right hand side

  • @Cikeb
    @Cikeb 2 роки тому +25

    The train is the smart choice in Helsinki. I always go by train to the airport.
    Things to know though.
    It does not matter on what side of the Helsinki Airport station platform you jump on a train, even if they go in opposite directions. It's a circle line, and both end up in the center of Helsinki. According to what I saw on the map on your phone, you took a train that goes to the city (southwards) along the western side. That side has a few more stops, and takes a bit longer to get to the center. It ends up on the western side of the main train station, while the other one ends up on the eastern side. Both are reasonably quick though.
    If you want to travel elsewhere than the center of Helsinki when arriving through the airport, you might want to look up which train you take. If your destination is north, like the city of Tampere, you might want to take the eastern route and jump off at Tikkurila train station, which is quite close to the airport. At that station you can change to a passenger train that goes north.
    If you're going to the city of Turku, then the western side if preferable. In that case you jump off at Huopalahti station, get on the next local train to Leppävaara in Espoo, and change to a passenger train there. You need a different ticket for the passenger trains.
    The HSL-ticket for the ABC-area is viable for 90 minutes, so you can change to any HSL-transport (local train, tram, bus, certain ferry connections) within that area during those 90 minutes. Be aware that if you later only move around in the general Helsinki area, then a AB-ticket is usually enough, but it's valid for 80 minutes. It costs only 2,80 € though.
    If unsure and not in a hurry, just go to the center and sort it out there.

      Any suggestion for an overnight hotel stay if transferring from airport to tampere by train?

    • @Cikeb
      @Cikeb Рік тому +3

      @@yayalearnteach61 Well, you could just stay in the center of Helsinki. One of the hotels close to the train station, of which there are a few, like Scandic Grand Central Helsinki (which is quite new, and looks classy), Hotel Holiday Inn Helsinki (at the end of the western tracks at the station), Radisson Blue Plaza Hotel and Sokos Hotel Vaakuna. These four are very close to the station. If you want a cheaper stay, look up Hotel Arthur, which is not far away. Just an extra city block eastwards from the station. It's within walking distance,
      It only takes 30-28 minutes into the city with the commuter train from the airport. It's easy to board the train to Tampere from there the next day, as you can show up a bit earlier and take your time. If changing at Tikkurila station, it's a bit more stressful, as the train stays at the station for just a few minutes before continuing northwards.
      There is however a hotel called Sokos Hotel Vantaa in Tikkurila, relatively close to the station there, so that is an option. It's probably a bit cheaper too.

      This hotel is located on top of tracks and is the 2nd biggest train station in Helsinki. It has a huge shopping center too, and is actually if just a bit closer to Tampere.
      This hotel has great beds, views, superb location and it also works as some kind of transportation hub. Had a great stay in December, strongly recommended! The most convenient hotel for catching a train that I have ever been to. Just take a lift/elevator down and walk for a few minutes to a platform.

    Dont you have to frank the ticket on the train??

    • @TheWonderingEnglishman
      @TheWonderingEnglishman  4 місяці тому

      In Helsinki, when you travel from the airport to the city center by train, you need to have a valid ticket before boarding. The ticket should be purchased and, if necessary, validated before you get on the train. Helsinki's public transportation system uses an honor system, where tickets are not typically checked upon entering the train but may be checked at any point during the journey by a ticket inspector.
      Here’s how it generally works:
      Purchasing Tickets: You can buy tickets from machines located at the airport, through the HSL (Helsinki Region Transport) mobile app, or at various sales points throughout the city.
      Validation: If you purchase a paper ticket, you generally do not need to validate it as it will have the start time printed on it when issued. However, if you're using a travel card, you should check it in at a card reader before boarding. The mobile app tickets are activated at the time of purchase and also do not need to be validated.
      Traveling: Once you have your ticket, you can board the train. The trains that connect Helsinki Airport to the city center are the I and P trains on the Ring Rail Line. These trains travel in both directions around the loop, one heading clockwise and the other counterclockwise, and both will get you to the city center.
      Ticket Inspection: Keep your ticket handy throughout your journey, as ticket inspections can occur on the train at random intervals.
      This system ensures ease and flexibility for travelers, but it's important to have a valid ticket to avoid fines. Always double-check the latest guidelines or instructions displayed at the ticket machines or on the official HSL website to ensure you're following the current procedures.

      For a single trip you need a regional ticket priced at € 4.10. Tickets are available at Helsinki Airport train station (Lentoasema) from the ticket vending machines. Children from 7 up to 17 years get a discount and have to pay only € 2.10. A ticket is valid for 90 minutes on the entire network of HSL, which includes Helsinki, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Espoo (fare zone ABC). The price of a 24-hour ticket is € 11.00 for adults and € 5.50 for children from 7 up to 17 years.
      Wi-Fi from experience was widely available. SIM cards can be bought from machines at airport, kiosks or once in the centre of Helsinki at any phone shop. Although every coffee house, pub and restaurant generally does have Wi-Fi. Download google maps (offline mode) so you can use when not connected to wifi.
