Best Tudor Dive Watch? Visiting The NYC Store: Pelagos 39 vs Black Bay Monochrome & My Submariner

- When I began talking about watches on UA-cam a decade ago, Tudor had just returned to the USA market, and I became hooked. Now I'm back in NYC, so I had to visit their boutique in the trendy Meatpacking district. After being one of the first watch channels to buy the first generations of ETA and rose printed dial Black Bay divers, I turned my back to new releases from the rebellious younger brother of Rolex. Instead, I turned my attention to their underrated and richly varied array of vintage offerings, like Prince Dates, Ranger, and Date-Day models, and eventually fell in love with various versions of their highly revered Submariners. Fast forward our calendar complications to today. Is it time to give their new divers another chance? In this video I compare my current Tudor Submariner 79090 to their latest Black Bay incarnations, along with the more compact Pelagos 39, to see if they have finally made their best divers yet...and if they're good enough to convince me to upgrade. What do you think about the watches in this video? Are they worth it? Or are they still a downgrade and just more of the same charmless, cookie cutter copies, made to squeeze the last drop of milk out of an ever emaciated cash cow? Spot on with your statement about Pelagos giving you the submariner feel. I think the Pelagos is the only watch that carries on the original Submariner purpose as a tool watch. The modern Submariner is a luxury watch while the black bay is a vintage inspired luxury watch. Whereas the Pelagos just focus on being a good analog tool watch.

You must be the first reviewer, at least that I've noticed, that pointed out that the round BB indices don't suit the chunky snowflake hands. Round indices suit Mercedes and lollipop hands. Square indices suit snowflake hands. This is why I prefer the Pelagos, having previously owned the Blue 42 which I sold and replaced with the 39 when it was launched. I wear my P39 every day and it's my favourite watch for everyday wear.👏

Perhaps it’s the nostalgia but I prefer your return to this format style. Your referring to the black bay as a crack bay still has me rolling with laughter. I have always appreciated your opinions and yes even at times your brutal honesty.
I've always felt the Black Bay was pretending to be something it wasn't, whereas the the Pelagos is just a a tool being a tool.

I don’t know if anyone has commented on it yet, but your Goldfinger insert with the Tudor was seamless. I had to do a double take and rewind to make sure I had seen correctly.
Sidenote, it was really hot up in the northeast last week! The GF and I were in RI for the weekend for a wedding, and with how hot and humid it was, we were happy to be back to the dry heat of Utah once we were done.

Yeah, the main reason I would go with the P39, or almost any Pelagos, is the fact the snowflake hands properly go with a snowflake dial. The snowflake hands just don't look right and lack cohesion with a submariner dial as in the Black Bay line.

Welcome to NYC sweltering heat! I don’t think the Rolex/Tudor Sub is a good direct comparison to the BB. I think the Black Bay and especially the BB58 is its own separate thing. The 58 is so well made and perfectly proportioned for a sports watch. It borrows from classic Tudors and Rolex without being a slave to an exact copy . It really is it’s own thing. The gilt bezel gives the 58 a warm feel, the red triangle offers a pop of color paying homage to the Tudor Big Crown, the chunky coin edge crown is so satisfying to wind with a refined matching coin edge bezel and I love the snow flake seconds hand. It’s different from the more traditional lollipop style. By the way, 39 mm is on the smaller side for a modern sized sports watch. I think anything smaller is playing vintage territory.
I wanted to like the P39 but the sunsburst dial is frankly quite strong and not something I could get over. I also didn’t like the brushed finish on the bezel. They both make the watch weirdly blingy/kind of tacky. The FXD is a much “toolier” Pelagos but it might be a bit big for many wrists. I’m torn between the mono and the FXD for my first Tudor.
Crack Bay…😆. In all honesty, I do like the Black Bay, especially the white dial GMT because I like GMT’s. But the Pelagos is hands down my current favorite Tudor. I used to go to NY every September. I sure miss it. There’s no other City like it in the world…

I walked into my AD to buy a black bay and left wearing a pelagos 39. It's the perfect diver and the titanium feels so soft and light. It will also take scratches/ patina a lot better than the BB as time goes on. The more I wear it the more I love it.

Like that Pelagos 39, specifically the white outer edges of the hands and the more consistent square theme on the indices with that dash of red in the "Pelagos" text on the face. As you mentioned, you can play and match that with your nice custom NATO. Cheers mate, until next time.
My larger blue Pelagos remains my daily. The symmetry of the markers and the snowflake hands looks so right to my eye.

New strategy. I will buy Pelagos 39 now, then buy Pelagos 42 Blue pre-owned or wait for Pelagos 39 Blue. Next, rubber and nato straps. Sell lots of others to fund this plan.

Perhaps you'll remember, a month ago I came to you for help after being removed from your Facebook group, for foolishly laugh reacting to a post which goes against my religious values.
After Matthew ignored me for 25 days, I followed up for him to reply quickly to my 2nd email. I was removed on grounds of diversity & inclusion. But those grounds should also protect me. The intent of my throw away laugh react (which I admit was a poor error of judgement) was made on protest grounds of faith. Which too falls under the protection of D&I. D&I protects all communities. Opposing views must be allowed to risk offending others. Not that I voiced a view, a mere laugh react, so insignificant a thing to be removed on the grounds of hate.
Under D&I is freedom of expression. The originator of the post was allowed to risk offending people in pursuit of his ideological truth (he clearly did by the comments & reactions). Yet I was blocked for a mere laugh react. You can't police against basic non-verbal functions provided by the platform you operate on, which serve not as a form of communication so cannot be deemed as hateful discourse. I left no hate, opposing view or bigotry. I've never broke any of the group rules. Yet for my religious belief I am being shunned & blocked by the admin team, with your blessing according to Matthew.
I plead with you, see this for the misunderstanding it is. I didn't laugh react out of homophobia. How a laugh reaction can be deemed as such is beyond me. I saw a politicised post celebrating a commercialised ideology which goes against my faith. I acted poorly. I admit wrongdoing & deeply miss your community & my friends. Please reconsider the reversal of my ban. My Facebook name is Daniel Jacob, you'll sadly find me in the group block list.

Love Tudor. Safe to say i'm pretty biased as i own two of them. Unfortunately i've no room in my collection for another but if i did the Pelagos 39 would be my pick. It's the modern take on the Tudor Sub.

If you want a submariner you should probably buy one. If you want a black bay then you should probably buy one. If you want one and buy the other chances are you’re gonna be disappointed.

The clasp on the Pelagos 39 didn't sit flat on my wrist. They should have dumped the dive extension and shortened the clasp.

The Pelagos is the only modern Tudor I've ever been interested in, but I particularly love the design cues of the 42mm and I absolutely need a date feature on my watches. If they ever release a Pelagos 39 in blue with date I would seriously consider it.
I'm with you on that. I literally could not care less about any BB but the Pelagos has always caught my eye. I thought about holding out for a blue 39 but finally picked up a blue 42 for just over 3K. Glad I went with the OG and it's entirely matte finish

You really seem happy to be back in NYC, despite the heat 😅 anyway, I’ve really come around to the Pelagos 39. It has a lot of features I like…the brushed fully lumed ceramic bezel, the mild sunburst on the dial (which you’re not keen on apparently) the micro-adjust on the bracelet and no date complication! And those squared off blocks of lume (another very contemporary feature I’m fond of) for the indices do go very well with Tudor’s trademark snowflake hands.
It is a thoroughly modern design unique to Tudor…very well done 👏 like you though, my only minor gripe pertains to the use of scratch and dent prone Grade 2 Ti rather than Grade 5. Maybe it was a cost issue that garnered Tudor’s decision to go with the former? 🤷♂️

Buy a Rolex Sea Dweller…..beautiful fitting watch and covers all the dive watch parameters for fit, form and function. 👍
My NTH Näcken Blue no date is back on my wrist and I'm in love with it again. I bought and sold a lot of other suggestions coming from you, SKXs, Lorier, Navitimer but this Näcken blues on the dial and bezel are truly mesmerising! To scratch that 1016 itch, I'll catch a Smiths Everest one day, and I should check the Black Bay 54 in the metal to be sure about it if it is worth the cost (I could save for vintage but cannot cope with the guilt to engulf so much money on, in the end, truly, toys). With the Nomos Ahoi Neomatik in Bucherer blue (limited edition I think) and a simple edc Seiko 5 SRPE 5X something, the one in green for a change, I think I'll be happy for a long time putting all these on nice nato straps. Ok, the Nivada Grenchen Antarctic is really nice too, but a bit expensive for 3ATM, hesalite and Soprod... Onwards, and Upwards ;-)!
Hey greetings TGV-Do you think the 54 suffers the same misflow of symmetry of snowflake with circles . I’ve just had a 54 in and sent it back sadly- I was a bit underwhelmed. The bezel was very difficult to turn only from odd angles and not very grippy .
Great question and I am sorry to hear it did not work out. While I do think the 54 is an absolutely smashing watch, I feel is suffers from the same problem most Black Bays have, the "mudflow" you speak of, great way to put it btw. So I was underwhelmed too. Hence part of the reason I had to find my happiness with Tudor in a painfully dated, albeit super cool vintage Subby. I hope that makes sense,

I wore my rolex all over New York, nobody seems to care or notice. I see a lot of people wearing nice watches in Manhattan and not worrying about it.
I was just in the Tudor store a week ago. lol expected, compared to my wrist the watches really looked smaller in person
Great video in the N-Y-C!! The Pelagos 39 is the pinnacle of Tudor dive watches. They just need to restore the rehaut cutouts from LHD, convert that ugh width to 20mm and matte up that dial a bit.
Aesthetically it may not “work” or have symmetry on the black bay, but I love the snowflake hands on Tudor because my eyes suck and it makes reading the time easier. The P39 is truly a fantastic watch and I’m sure you’d enjoy it in blue. All I’ve been wearing for two months at this point is the P39 and 5600UE. Great 2 watch setup right now. Hi TGV, how do you think the Pelagos 39 compares to the FXD? Which would be your pick considering that the FXD (specifically the blue 'MN') can be seen to have more loyal ties to Tudor's heritage?

I'm with you. I still can't get behind the snowflake hand and round indicies of the Black Bay. The Pelagos got it right. (I'm a big fan of the Ranger as well.)
This is the video we needed. I personally love the Pelagos 39, but am waiting to feed the cash cow upon release of a blue version. The P39 really feels like a modern version of a vintage Sub, if that makes sense. I happened to try both a vintage sub (at a Todd Snyder, of all places) and then a P39 at my AD in close proximity. I love the blue MN Tudor Subs with the snowflake hands/rectangular markers, but the thought of paying more for one than my new Explorer II just doesn't make sense in my brain. I have not had a chance to try on the monochrome, but the burgundy version wears beautifully on my 7 inch wrist. It was the refresh we all needed. I wouldn't be mad if they came out with an all blue version of that, but I still would prefer a blue P39.
I was surprised (and disappointed) that Tudor didn't release a blue Pelagos 39 this year. My next watch will be a smaller diver to contrast my Omega SMP, and I do love the timelessness of the Tudor lines.

I still prefer the warmth of the CrackBays gilt dial but man I saw the FXD’s in the flesh recently and the black one was calling my name 🤷🏻♂️. Shout out to the MeatPacking boutique - they sold me my CrackBay 54 the day after reveal… said it was the first in the US 🎻

The Pelagos 39 looks sweet TGV. I'm currently trying to get my hands on the BB 54 with the steel bracelet. However, it's not as easy to score one here in Australia. One day hopefully. I've noticed you're no longer in Philly. NYC must be such an awesome place to live. One question though..How did you manage to sneak Hugo in? A T-Rex would really stand out. Kudos on another great video.

Love my Pelagos 39, but I hardly wear it anymore since I basically daily my 124270 Explorer, so even though I love my Pelagos, it's too nice of a watch to have it collect dust in my safe, hence why I'm currently looking into selling it.
Like I said, I still love it though, imo the best offering in the current Tudor catalogue, maybe alongside the BlackBay 54, but like you said, the Pelagos 39 has that symmetry on the dial, so I think it has the edge over all other models that Tudor currently offers.
I would own a Pelagos 39 if it weren’t for the fact I own a Black Bay 58.
However, if the Pelagos 39 was stainless steel… I don’t think I’d own the BB58 anymore.
I just think they’re too closely related for me to own both, when I’d much rather own, let’s say an Aqua Terra, or an Explorer to go with my BB58.
The old Tudors are the best. And the ETA movement are rock solid reliable and easy to maintain.New model, this made after he reboot about a decade ago, Tudors have no soul at all. I almost jumped on a 39 Pelagos, but after years of wearing a sturdy 14060 it just didn't measure up so I passed. But the subjectivity is what make horology so interesting.

I am, however, planning to get the new BB36 sometime in the future. But now you have drawn my attention to the pelagos 39 which also seems like an excellent option. Dammit TGV!!

The Pelagos 39 is what the Submariner was. TGV, what is a Sub now? Budget SeaQ or Fifty Fathoms? Luxury classic? All the best.
I totally respect your opinion on the Pelagos 39, but for me this is not really a Pelagos, that Bezel shine and the Sunray Dial is the complete opposite of what the Pelagos is, the modern embodiment of what a Sub used to be is the FXD for me, with all its quirks it’s the ultra modern Tool Diver
I have Tudors going back to the Blue Bezel/ Black Dial 41MM in house, the latest being the Pelagos 39MM, with several in between. I'm not inclined to sell any of them but I'm not likely to buy any of the slightly tweaked models that they keep releasing, even though I find the 41MM monochrome appealing. I'm waiting for something really new from Tudor. Something that won't look like something I already own if I look at it and squint.

After listening to your opinions today, I’ve come to realize that you need a 14060 or a 14060M two liner…. Classic, perfect, every day piece.
TGV, if someone were to press the dislike button on this video? Would you say that constitutes hate speech or a hate crime against you? Can it even be considered as speech or dialogue at all? I dont think it can. What if your video contained certain flags & symbolage? If so, would it now be classed as hate speech and why?
I'm drawing a very real equivalency to my recent experience in your group the UGWC. Having been removed by Matthew over a mere laugh reaction (which isnt even a form of dialogue, how can one class it as hateful discourse?)... Im trying to find the answer to how you (our founder) would categorise a laugh reaction? If a laugh reaction (a basic non-verbal function provided by the platform you operate on) is "hate speech", is a sad face also hate speech? How about the wow face reaction?
Hard to define right? What if we took a look into the intent behind a laugh reaction? Surely you'd have to ask the person who left it what the intent of that reaction is to determine whether it was made out of hate & bigotry or not right? If its because they genuinely found something funny, is that hate? If they used it as a form of ideological protest against a politicised ideology which has no place in a watch group & goes against their faith (as i did), is that hate? Seemingly, your man Matthew doesn't know how to define it. He fails to accept that he misinterpreted the intent of my reaction and that it therefore wasn't laced with bigotry (which is impossible anyway, its a laugh reaction, not a form of speech).
How exactly can you police against such unimportant, basic & non-verbal functions which are provided by the platform you use, TO BE USED? If your ruling is truly to side with Matthew who rudely ignored me for a month, before clipping & misrepresenting my words, then I must say, my Urban Gentry experience has been ruined and is now over. Which im sure you'll agree is a great shame for someone as engaging & dedicated to your channel as I am. Instead I must believe that in fact Matthew hasnt consulted you on the matter, because as someone who comes from Christian roots yourself, you surely know that religious groups are also protected under DE&I and cannot be persecuted & banned for an act made out of faith.

Very cool your family member was awarded the Victoria Cross. My grandad was awarded the Légion d'honneur about 5-6 years back for his part in D-Day. He’s still kicking about and was part of the 20 vets that recently went on that week long memorial trip with the Royal British Legion.

No wonder the sales staff were raving about your "Sub" , it's the only one with character. Unfortunately my interest has waned due to the mass robotic production that for me makes it soulless. Much prefer a Sinn ezm , Zodiac or Nivada grenchen nowadays .
Nevertheless I always enjoy the videos and Tudor make a solid proposition, just not for me anymore.
Man I missed those NY sounds!😎 Really really love the Pelagos 39, but they hot swap movements when servicing so I'm not sure if I would buy one. Just keep the good old submariner;)

Your Tudor sub is gorgeous. I would never swap it for a black bay.
That said: Tudor subs have gotten rather expensive:( you can’t deny a Black Bay is better value if you were to buy now
Great to see the Black Bay 58 GMT, however wouldn’t a Pelagos with a GMT complication make the ultimate travel tool watch?
The pelagos 39 is a very nice watch. I do regret the Sunray effect on the dial and the bezel and I'll continue to choose my BB58 blue all day long.
But a P39 in a mat blue would be so hot, let's see next year !

I love the Pelagos, but the original ones. The 39mm would be perfect if it was just a minified version of the 42mm. Matte dial and matte bezel insert all the way!
I'm on board with an idea of a tool watch to be easily serviceable. Thus ETA. But why not to extend this further - tool watch must be quartz? 🙂
I went for the 39. Agree with your observations on the BB, fundamentally that watch is just not an attractive design IMO

Have you tried the FXDs? I purchased the black FXD and have been loving it. Even on my 6.75” wrist. I feel like it was made as if Tudor continued making issued watches. Like Casio doesn’t exist. The monoblock style case is so cool. Give it a try if you haven’t already. Don’t be put off by the size on paper. It really wears well for its size because of those lugs

TGV back in NYC! Epic! Wow that Tudor bezel sounds aaaaamazing. The lack of crown guards in the Black Bay line wins me over...every time. It really holds to the styling of the mid-century ref 7924 "Big Crown" long before dive watches started to slap on those pesky crown guards. Summer heat in nyc...uggh. Always pure class. O&U
The only Tudor that interests me is the BB Ceramic 41. No scratches, no shit, very clear dial, Metas cert, sapphire sandwich
for me the lhd pelagos is the stand out in the range ( rouleete date wheel,red dial type , 500m , helium valve and the best braclet going for the money )and next to my no date sub it just looks beautifully tough with a powerfull punch for its price
I know you can get around on public transportation, but be careful on those trains. Don't be so relaxed. I lived there my whole life and you don't want to have a problem. I like your video's and we want you around for a long time.
