In this sewing tutorial I show you how to make a super easy envelope pillow cover. This is a great beginner project that any child or adult can make. If you have old throw pillows on your couch and want to revamp your home decor these would be great to make and you can whip up a bunch in no time!
In this tutorial I also walk you through the technique I use to make sure my pillows fit perfectly inside the cover and there is sagging. I show you what measurements you should use for cutting your fabric and how to make the fabric overlap on the back of your completed pillow cover.
This is a beginner sewing tutorial and does not require any additional notions like buttons, zipper, clasps, etc. All you need is the fabric you want to use and matching thread!

You are a good teacher! You deserve nothing but positive comments. I've been an elementary school teacher for 15+ years. I know what I'm talking about. A lot of tutorial's...although they mean well...they leave out very important details and don't explain things very thoroughly, but you do. Thank you for being so great and keep it up girl.

Made a pillowcase from my husband's father's old clothes (He passed away from cancer almost 2 years ago.) in just a few hours. I REALLY took my time as I had only one shot with the material! One side was made from his iconic plaid shirt, the other...blue jeans with a pocket! It was a bit challenging, but that is because of the choice of the blue jeans and using the pocket where I did. Otherwise, this would have been a breeze. Thank you so much for posting this. The pillow will be the most perfect gift for my husband's brother on his 50th birthday in just a few weeks! :)

What a GREAT IDEA you had in using your deceased father-in-law’s plaid shirt and partial jeans with a pocket for your envelope pillow cover!!! I still have some of those same things my deceased husband wore but I couldn’t bring myself to discard. Your FANTASTIC IDEA has inspired me to make some pillow covers or even a small quilt to lay over the foot of my bed as an added decoration! So much better than discarding‼️ Thank you!!!!!

Hi Crafty Gemini! I was actually searching for a knitting tutorial for a pillow cover and clicked when I saw your name. My grandmother used your videos to bake bread. She died a couple of months ago from cancer and I miss her dearly. She loved your videos. I can see why. I'm learning to knit, sew and bake because she was good at those things and even though she is gone I want her to be proud. Thank you for your wonderful tutorials and for being a part of these memories.

Right? It's the perfect balance between "It would be nice if this had some narration" and "Dear lord get to the POINT already!!" Plus she doesn't speed talk her way through it, and enunciates clearly so it's easy to understand what she's saying.

If you make the back 13 x 17, then cut it in half, you have two inches overlap on each side. After seam allowance and hemming, you have less than an inch overlap. It has to be at least 13x20 or 13x21 in order to get a 3" or 4" overlap. Thanks for the posting the video. I would have loved to have had this kind of stuff when I learned to sew years ago. It would have saved me so much trial and error. I love You Tube Videos! So nice of people like you to share!

  • @TheCraftyGemini

You got it! If the pillow is especially puffy add a little more but if you use a 1/4" seam allowance you should be good to go. Happy sewing!

You did an excellent job demonstrating how to make an envelope pillow cover. You had a clear, easily understood voice and spoke clearly, loudly, and an excellent speaking pace - not too fast. Your video of the steps as you sewed was real time as you did it, which was wonderful and made it easy to follow. (When people record a fast forward video of their steps and their work, it is never helpful; thank you for not doing that.). You did excellent at explaining each step as you went. Your directions were specific, short, and easy to understand and to do. Thank you SO much! I successfully made an envelope pillow cover by following your directions. Thank you! Well done CraftyGemini! Well done.

Just used your pillow "recipe" and the two pillow covers I used turned out great! I found that erring on the small side, rather than too large, worked better. I also didn't have enough material for a 2-inch overlap, so what I did was overlap only about 1 inch, and then but a button hole in and put a decorative button on the back to hold the material closed. It looks cute as the front now, too :). Thanks again!!!
