    I am completely new to sewing, so as my 4th project, I challenged myself to make a pillow cover. Thanks to your wonderful tutorial, I was able to complete a pillow cover that fits perfectly! Thank you for taking time to explain and show each step in detail. 😊

      That must feel great!
      It's sad that the public school took home economics out of their classes. When I was in 8th grade I made a beautiful skirt and in 9th grade a double sided vest to match the skirt.
      When I was 12, I went to a girl's religious camp that summer, the whole bunk made jumpers. I remembering being scared that I would sit down and the stiches would all come out, LOL. Between a good sewing machine and talented counsellors, each girl had a beautiful jumper.
      Today pillow covers...tomorrow...a new wardrobe!

    This is great. I really liked the tips, the different methods, and explaining how you did your math. My father passed away recently and I wanted to use some of his shirts to make pillow covers but was pretty sure I wouldn't have enough fabric to make a whole cover. Especially your first way, with a different color back, and not worrying about adding a zipper seems like something I can do. Definitely going to practice on some other fabric first though as I haven't done much sewing. This seems doable.

    For Tip #8, I have a genius tip. To avoid noticing the back seam on your square pillow, turn it in the other direction. Voila! So much less effort than sweating whether it's the top or the side of the square. Because it's square. Jeez, Louise.

    For the rectangle pillow cover, is there a specific reason you didn’t add an inch for seam allowance? Is it so the pillow is tighter within the cover?

    I am currently making a 14x14 pillow slipcover. Where did you get the 4 inches from at 1:17? Since my pillow is slightly smaller should I make this number smaller?

    • @TamarasJoyDIY
      @TamarasJoyDIY  2 роки тому +1

      Fair point! Yes you can make the 4” smaller. The main thing is you don’t want the pillow once inserted to spread both flaps apart and show the inside pillow. I hope that makes sense. Happy sewing!

I want to understand the math.. can you tell me what/how the plus 4” is on the first cover and on the long pillow what/how is the plus 2” on the small piece and the plus 5” is on the long piece? What are those additions for? Thanks son,I h.. very much a newbie here

    how are you measuring your fabric? Fabric comes in 45" and 60" bolts. If you want 1 or 2 colors of fabric, how much should you purchase? Thanks

    • @TamarasJoyDIY
      @TamarasJoyDIY  2 роки тому

      Hi Regina, Fabric comes is lots of different widths. Often quilters cotton comes at around 42" (in my area anyways, and I tend to use quilters cotton for my projects). If you want to make a pillow cover often a half of a yard will give you plenty to work with (depending on the size of the pillow you want to cover of course). Just make sure you buy enough off the bolt, that it is larger than the width (plus seams) of your pillow that you are covering. Hope that helps :)

    Can I still do this without an iron? My first project. Making a pillow for my newborn son.

    • @TamarasJoyDIY
      @TamarasJoyDIY  2 роки тому

      Hi Ashlee, congrats on your baby boy! I am a boy mom and they sure will keep you busy. As for the pillow, yes you can do this without an iron. Just finger press the edge and that will work too. Or pin the folds down. Or even some Elmer’s glue will hold it down temporarily. Just make sure it is a wash away glue. Happy sewing!!

    I think it's funny I use a chopstick too. If anyone wants to use a chopstick for your corners do not use the ones they give your with your food. Go to an Asian grocery store and buy a nice set for 4 to 8 people you can put two in the sewing room and put the rest in your silverware drawer I put mine with the knives and you will never have to use those nasty wooden ones ever again.
