    The final bar is amazing looking - definitely didn't mind seeing it a second time! Does your recover (73.4% I think) match what you'd expect from this particular placer gold you used? (I understand the purity varies a fair amount).

    I love your videos and have tried a handful of times but I can't get all the copper to burn off in the chemical reactions should I keep washing it in nitric acid? Lost and don't know what to do...

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  2 роки тому

      Copper takes longer than silver to dissolve in nitric. And for refiners, patience is a virtue. As a new refiner, I remember desperately wanting the gold so bad that I tried to force reactions, try short cuts, and continue processing before it was ready. Had to go through it to realize that it’s not the right way to go.

  • @phillydterminaldisease6578

    Wait what happened to the sterling silver? Did it get pulled out in the blue solution? Was that step really necessary? This is fascinating thanks

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  2 роки тому +1

      I recovered all the silver. Adding silver is essential for the nitric to penetrate. If you put 14k in boiling nitric it remains unaffected.

    Is the silicate material that is found in the medicine packaging or? Goods such as we find them in small bags in shoes, the same material that is used with borax and flux to melt metals from the soil

    • @goldrefining

      No sir it's not the same. One is Silica like sand and the other is sodium tetraborate. You can buy Mule Team 20/20 borax at your store for about $5 a box and use that.

    Just rewatched this as I was working on some placer gold. It seems to me that placer gold is pure enough to skip the inquartation step without having the issues of lower karat gold. I’ll let you know how the experiment works. I’m sure I’ll have silver chloride but that’s east to deal with.

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  7 місяців тому

      Probably be just fine. I inquart everything, if I can. Because it does such a fantastic job of cleaning the gold.

    • @ExtractingMetals
      @ExtractingMetals 7 місяців тому

      @@sreetips well the experiment is complete on a 6 gram sample. Apparently the primary impurity in placer gold is silver so at 25% silver it is enough to cause the issue of forming the crust and stalling the reaction. Therefore, inquartation is best for placer gold. It was a fun experiment tho. I now know that 75% of the placer gold will be gold and the other 25% will be silver. It makes it easier to calculate the values.

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  7 місяців тому

      Figuring placer to be 18k is probably a good rule of thumb. Then if you encounter a higher concentration of gold it will be a welcome surprise.

      I’ve never done it, but I’ve been told by a reliable source (Harold_V on the goldrefiningforum.com) that it can be rendered to pure silver by heating in a crucible with plenty of sodium carbonate. But it makes lot of nasty fumes, and will have a tendency to boil over out of the crucible.
