He was 100% family and of course that signature high end back up vocals!! Lost my Wife of 37 years to Alcoholism and heavy smoking last year.
Both her parents were alcoholics.
Hospital doc told me she was doomed when she started to drink about age 35. He said plenty of evidence that people who have alcoholic parents shouldn't drink.
She was only 56, even though the alcohol destroyed our relationship I still miss her terrible.

I moved with her across the country thinking it might motivate her to try to quit and work a program but nothing worked.

And its a combination of that as well as a genetic predisposition to alcohol.
Anyone who has had a parent who is an alcoholic is just as likely to go down that path and shouldnt be anywhere near an alcoholic drink.

As an alcoholic myself - sober 8 years now - I well-know the hell Ed was going through. Alcoholism is an equal opportunity destroyer. It does not discriminate.
What a horrifying ending to what greatness that Sammy added to Van Halen. They once all loved one another . Then to carry on disagreements to intervene with the love of friendship to end with a goodbye literally on Eddie's death bed . You can forgive without hanging with that person . What happened here truly shows how arguments can carry stubbornness all the way to the bitter end. Sad considering the achievements and the love they truly shared . I honestly believe had Sammy not got into Van Halen they would of never achieved continued success on the facts that we the fans had married and had been growing up with Van Halen and when Sammy came along he brought that growth called being adults to the table and wrote songs that was at the level of our ages . I pray Eddie is well in heavens realm . Blessings to the gang left and there families. Don't hold grudges. Amen

Saw this firsthand on stage in Dallas..Eddie was wasted. We was underweight and on some hard sht..Sammy , Mike wouldn't even look at Ed. He was is bad shape. Even told the audience to f**k off. Still love em both..

I saw the 04 reunion. I was at the Pittsburgh show. Sad. Ed was really drunk. I thought he was going to pass out. I almost walked out of the show.
Ed wasn't drunk on the 04 tour, he was deep in the throes of meth addiction and probably was coming down off a high at that concert you went to

There's only been a handful of geniuses in Rock and roll & Eddie's one of them. I3 favorite guitar players of all time Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, and perfect pitch Glen Campbell. Eddie Van Halen was a five-tool musician & a great performer.
Sammy is the real deal, he cares about people….he is not someone to diss others, Eddie and Alex just couldn’t enjoy the time for whatever reason, sad.

I have a lot of respect for Sammy and he himself said the restaurant, bar, liquor business he would never have if it wasn't for Van Halen. All bands have demons the Ego's drugs money but the time you spend together is Not for sale to write books for and tell the public about your Family for money. The second saddest thing is why did the band not sit EVH and have an intervention with him if you want to go on tour treatment first 90 days then tour. "He without sin cast the first stone"

I went to 04 show in dallas..eddie was hammered big time.
Saw them the 2nd night of that tour in Hershey, Pa. Same, EVH was totally beyond addictive functioning that show. Sammy and Mikey saved that show.
The openers were Silvertide from Philly, PA. They were incredible.
