Love to see you back Dylan! I've been doing surf photography for two years now and started a similar project myself. You videos motivate me to keep up!
Yes that is correct, I didnt check the seal, because the plate is clear you can see if the seal is squashed down enough. This time the seal wasnt in the groove at all. Good thing too was the camera is lifted off the bottom of the housing so the camera didnt get wet, and I caught it early. It was very lucky.
Dylan Brayshaw lucked out on that one. Thanks for writing back to me so quick. Your shows really inspiring. I live in San Diego and have been shooting with my sea frog. Just ordered aquatech housing stoked!!! Man I mis burleigh, I lived there for a year back in 2011. Cool man give me a follow if you’d like on IG would love to chat more. @loosepixels
Hey man this is such a solid business plan! How did you price the digital images and did you do any post production yourself into JPG or just share the unedited RAW file?
Yes I did post production to make them look awesome, batched process in Lightroom and exported high res Jpg. Pricing makes it worth my time, look at it from the surfers perspective, they are getting a high res water shot of them surfing, if you went out there that photo wouldn’t exist. So you gotta price it so your happy with what you get paid.
@@DylanBrayshaw sorry mate I think you maybe picked me up wrong! Totally agree you should charge for the image and as a surfer myself I would love to be able to buy a pic of me tucked into a little barrel! Was just wondering how much you charged for the digital image
Hey mate, does the 5d still hold up good? Looking at a 5dmkiv or a 1dxiii but heard lots of problems with oil splats on the sensor for 1dx series. Was sceptical about 5div as it’s so old but what do you think? Or any other setups you’d recommend as I’m starting from scratch after my Sony broke. Cheers!
Yeah the 5d mk3 is still solid. I was gonna switch to the Sonys, but havent yet as I havent been shooting much. Coming from Sony to the canon5d mk3 will feel heavy, but for photos it’s great, video is pretty much useless compared to Sony. There is no auto focus for video on the canon. But for photos if you have a good lens it’s great.
Amazing video! Can you share about what lens you shot with and your positioning/distance between you and the surfers? Thanks! and looking forward to more of your videos.
Some surfers expect photographers and videographers to give them their photos and video clips for free. When I tell them it's not free, they get pissed off. Those are some professionals and overconfident amateurs.
I'm totally new to this but thinking about giving it a go. How do you line up your position in the waves to catch great shots and not get wiped out by the same wave? I'm a total newbie surfer but love photography. How good at surfing should I be before I attempt this?
I’ve been a surfer since I was 15 years old, so surf experience helps a lot, knowing where to position yourself is important. Burleigh is a point break so there is mostly right hand breaking waves, I would position myself to the side of it.
@@DylanBrayshaw I figured having a strong surf background would be very important. Sadly I don't have that. I still plan to try. I will be using an A7III+85mm with a SeaFrog housing, and on land a Sony 200-600mm. Does this sound like a good setup? (Shooting mostly in a tourist surf town in Ecuador.)
Hello man! I really like your videos, and Im starting with surf photography, and of 100 photos maybe I have 10 with good focus. Im trying lot of different things to solve the problem. Could you tell me, if you want of course, how do you set your AF ? the points, cases, etc. Thanks!!
Hey Dylan, great video buddy. The question is, what website do you use to sell your images? I have been using SmugMug. I can set up different prices and packages with the subscription of a Pro. I love the idea of using the rubber band with your website that is a fantastic idea. I started shooting Open Water Swim Races, as well as running, and triathlons. But - I have not been able to market much. Any advice or directions will be appreciated. Sincerely -Jorge in Clearwater, Florida
Hey Jorge, I use photodeck, I have tried Square Space, Shootproof and many other photo management website services and have found Photodeck to be the best. 3 of the best things about Photodeck are. 1. Zero commissions on any sales 2. Website and server speed is lighting fast 3. Excellent client and photo management systems. Use my photodeck referral code and get 50% off your first month. Code: YG@UFPNNN As for advice, event photography can be really good, I would try get in with the race organisers first. If you can show maybe some smaller races that your website and systems works well for participants to find photos then its a win win. For surf photography, yeah just start at your local and once you get a couple shots of the surfer tell them you got the shot and where they can view it. They might download them or the might not, but at least you tried. Good luck
Hi Dylan. Thanks, inspiring vid. I'm thinking of supplementing my income with (land-based) surf shots. Are you selling all your shots as digital only, and/or printed/framed? Cheers from Cape Town.
Hey mate just saw this, only digital, if they ask for a print I try help them out, but it’s easier to just sell digital and then they sort out printing.
@@DylanBrayshaw thanks for you video, used your code to subscribe to Photodeck. Really enjoying it for now. Just wondering, why not use the built-in prints service? no extra hassle for the photographer, just more incomes! Also, if you choose one of their renowned professional partners, the end-result, the print, will look much better than if the clients would print it out himself or at some cheap print store. As a bonus, you'll sell way more prints after the shoot (also from friends and family), creating passive income!
@@mdbedelsohn4307 yes you are right, at the time it was easier for me to locally print when I did have print requests. Also most surfers only wanted digital files. Glad you using photodeck, it’s a very efficient web photo platform.
The rubber band is a brilliant idea
Yeah I started using them when I started waveshots, it works well surfers are terrible at remembering websites.

Great to see you back mate. Looking forward to your next one.

I cant believe you have not been sponsored by a water housing company , you deserve it
I know right, I guess they can see me advertising the housing anyway as I need to use one to shoot in the water.

Awesome to be back, that’s great let me know how you go.
Welcome back ! Always inspire me to take a dip with my camera
Thanks Austen!
Stoked your back. Your videos inspired me to shoot in the water.
Hey Dylan, brilliant idea with the rubberbands. They look much cheaper than standard silicone bands. Where did you find them?
Thanks, thought I’d share this idea. Yeah they are silicone bands, just the narrow type
@@DylanBrayshaw I appreciate it. I think they will work for me with mountain bikers too.
glad to see you back!
This was a sick video!!! Keep it up pls man, super addicting to watch.

Hi Dylan - we haven't seen you here in a long time - great photos and thanks for the tips. Nice to see you again
where can we buy that personalized rubber band ? good idea
Great video, if only we had warm water and light in Cornwall, UK. LIke the idea of the bands.
Yeah winter in aus isn’t that bad. The bands work so well.
That isnsuch a great idea. Way to go man. Stoked
Really interesting content thanks for sharing your experience !

The 24-105f more often than not
Thanks brother... Precious knowledge! 🤘🤘🤘👌👌👌👆👆👆📸📸📸
hey dylan good seeing you back with the awesome vids just a quick question did you make that website or did someone make it for you???
Hey Joel, yes I made the website myself :)
Hey Dylan I’m about to buy an aquatech housing but I’m curious did you not have the rubber gasket in place is that why it leaked ?
