Okay, basic mockery aside, we should clarify why MovieBob is wrong. His argument, essentially, is that the Human-Covenant conflict thoughtlessly embodies the notion that "diversity and individuality is bad; faceless conformity is good". MovieBob might -- *might* -- have a point if the Covenant was a true alliance of equals and all of those equal aliens were intrinsically hostile (and if their antagonism was presented as rooted in their diversity, i.e. "they're the enemy because they're cohabiting aliens", which isn't the case; they're the enemy because they're waging an unprovoked genocidal war). But neither of those hypotheticals is true. The Covenant isn't an alliance, it's an empire. The Elites are there because the Prophets have been manipulating them, and everyone else is there because they were conquered or would be crushed if they dared resist. Other than the Prophets, only the Brutes are intrinsically a problem, because of their fanatical aggression. The Elites -- the biggest faction anyway -- become allies of Humanity. The Hunters and the Drones have no inherent agenda against humans and just go home once the Covenant falls -- because they were only there at gunpoint, essentially, and are too alien to really care about politics and religion as Prophets or humans understand them. The Grunts just do what anyone bigger and stronger tells them to do, but otherwise would rather just live their lives threatening no-one. The Jackals are profit-motivated; they'll raid and pirate, but if it's more profitable to have a peaceful trading relationship they'll do that instead. Even the Brutes, the clearest "intrinsically bad" subject race, are being manipulated. The Covenant isn't an alliance of bad aliens against monolithic, "pure" humanity; it's a false, coerced monolith based on lies and oppression. And for that matter, the humans aren't intrinsically "good". We see a dark side to their unity -- political squabbles between colonies and the central government overreaching, lots of moral grey areas, and the consequences (particularly post-war) of having the military and intelligence communities end up so powerful. So just as the Covenant isn't "diverse alliance bad", the humans aren't "monolithic conformity good". The factions are not so simple; what's simple is *the underlying conflict of the war* -- the Covenant is trying to destroy humanity unprovoked, the humans are resisting so they don't get wiped out. *That* is simple and straightforward; but Halo never assumes that "alien alliance bad", "pure humanity good". Especially since later games make a big deal out of Human-Elite alliances.
Also, in the Bungie era we had ODST which showed the gang just thoughtlessly shoot down a bunch of Engineer hives just because they were in the way, despite no harm coming from them. Only to later realise the Engineers are just slaves and cannon fodder to the covenant.
MovieBob's argument is as usual based on his ignorance of the subject. Even if his thesis is this shows how "diversity and individuality is bad; faceless conformity is good", it's the Covenant that embodies "faceless conformity" far more than the Humans, as all aliens are basically enslaved into it
>only the Brutes are intrinsically a problem, because of their fanatical aggression. This isn't true though. If anything jackals are the far more problematic specie in the Covenant, as portrayed through their action, at least when Bungie was around I don't care about what retcons 343 makes.
Hell, given the Prophets' existence, it seems to be a slam dunk 'Religion fake and ghey thus bad' standard leftist argument, but they couldn't even take that so need to try and warp it into the 'current year' talking point instead.

If I've never killed a person, but then under the pressure of a person trying to take my life I defend myself in a way that leaves that person dead... My true character is that I'm a killer?
Your true character is that you are capable of taking life in defense of your own (and possibly or probably someone that you cherisj), some people even under such a threat would not be capable of bringing themselves to end a life even for a just cause.
It's endlessly funny to me that, because of his awfully imbalanced exposure to DC things, Rags' first and foremost knowledge about the Lazarus Pit is from that one time on a terrible CW crossover event where a racist Jonah Hex got his ass kicked next to one.
The problem with UnderTheMayo videos is that he has ABSURDLY specific tastes in games. And he's really bad at evaluating any games quality based on what it's trying to do instead of what he personally wants it to do. I think his Halo video is a very good distillation of this mindset. Where he is barely capable of engaging with the game at all because he thinks all shooters should be Doom.
In his Alien Isolation review he goes off on how much his hates the game, and then ends with him explaining how he would prefer the game to be. His explanation of how the game should be is just what the game already is, even down to specific mechanics that he apparently refused to engage with despite saying it's what he wanted. Very bizarre.
Mayo's videos are utter garbage. He made a decent video ONCE and apparently that extremely specific thing is the only thing that he enjoys. He's also a massive douchebag about it. He's a clown

The really strange thing about Bob’s Halo take is that he played the Halo game where the evils of the Covenant were the most blatant, sinister and obvious. If you played the first three main Halo games, you don’t really get a sense for the fact that the Covenant are a genocidal threat to humanity. It’s kind of alluded to, but not something those games gave much focus or attention. But Halo: Reach? A key theme of that game is the brutal, sadistic nature of the Covenant and the way they go after human civilians in their millions for no other reason than religious conviction. So it’s weird that in the Halo game where the evils of the Covenant are given the most focus that Bobert _still_ somehow manages to come away with the take that Halo is just a vehicle for the “fascism good, diversity bad” message. If he only played Combat Evolved where the Covenant are just aliens who go “wut-wut,” his stupid take would be somewhat understandable. But *Reach??* That’s just insane. 😂
And then if he played 2 and 3 it would go back to being nonsense again. Because the reason the Covenant is united is a Lie. Turns out intergalactic wars can be a little more complicated than just "Pure Evil side vs Pure Good side"

Militaristic society stories have a basic, innocuous level of appeal to the masculine spirit. The trend of people being hyper-sensitive to this as inherently 'fascist' is a problem.
Militarism would also be a natural consequence of an alien species trying to wipe you out. It's like WH40k, it's hard not be Xenophobic when every alien species you meet is trying to kill you.
I remember one of the few things that annoyed me about Iron Man 1 was Stane selling weapons to terrorists. Not only is he risking treason charges, but anything he could make selling to Terrorists is a pittance compared to what he’d make selling to the US and her allies.
The whole reason for him to sell to terrorists is to start an arms race. Making the terrorists technologically equal to the the U.S means the that U.S will need to buy bigger and better guns in larger quantities. This in turn will mean that the terrorists will need more weapons to keep up, and stark industries will be in the middle profiting on both sides for the next 10-30 years.

If you saw Moviebob was doing a video on Halo and your first thought *isn't* that he's going to complain about fascism, then you haven't gotten enough Bob

"The only problem with Stalin is that his army was not diverse enough, but destroy anything that remotely reminds me of the nazis" -MovieBob's least controversial take.
I am guessing that Bobert is ut from the same cloth as many left leaning figures of the time with similar "critical thinking " and "ideas". Like College Humor, Cracked, Mary Sue etc. They bleed into each other. Guessing the Starship troopers thing has been a big sticking point for a long time.
Mayo's suggestion to make games better is to add thoughtless puzzle sequences that exist to waste time. This is all fueled by the fact that he couldn't get good enough to beat GMGOW difficulty. What a scrub
Lol I didn't know he couldn't beat it on GMGOW So he says on easy difficulty it becomes a button masher but when on the hardest difficulty where you basically HAVE to engage with every mechanic the devs have provided he still complains?
Overlooking the obvious fact Moviebob knows basically nothing about Halo, as if he were to go after anything about the spartans, it'd probably be how comically evil ONI are, (cuz, y'know, Film Robert would very much miss that it was intentional) and not that they're not racially diverse considering the only Spartan II in their squad is *Hungarian*. I like how Moviebob points out covenant diversity as if humanity simply chose not to enlist aliens into their army, and ignores the fact they only take humans as hostages and useful idiots to enact their genocide. As if they wouldn't have done the exact same for any other species that was made the reclaimer.
Also, the humans immediately enter into alliance with anyone who isn’t hostile to them and never initiate conflict. They form alliances with the Sentinels, Engineers, Elites, Grunts, Hunters, and even the Flood when those peoples aren’t hostile to them.
As an older gamer, I don't get the whole cranking up the difficulty to the max all the way. I've noticed as I've gotten into my 40's that my reaction speed (which was never the best) has declined. I always play on Normal mode. I've even bumped some games down to easy if I just want to get the story or the experience with the game without a huge hassle. Plus, I don't have a ton of free time to game like I did when I was younger.
For a lot of players, playing on normal is simply too easy and feels nothing. I am in my 40s too, and normal difficulty of RTS still feels too easy so I would set it higher just so Its a challenge.
Often low fail chance presented by lower difficulties makes a game boring. Getting shot 50 times in an FPS and only losing half your health isn't very stimulating.
Rags is starting to become insufferable to listen to. He has no idea what he's talking about especially on the topic of games, games hes never even played only watched mauler play. Its really a joke the way he grandstands like he has some sort of authority
2:27:07 Fallout 3 Difficulty was a failure, the harder you set the game, the easier the game becomes. As you get an exp bonus based on difficulty. Doing so allows you to level faster, what allows you to gain power faster, what allows you to gain levels faster. The actual difficulty modifier is only about how much damage the player does and the enemy does. What with the right build and the right Gameplay Route, the effect of increased enemy power is negligible.
"Character Vs perceived character", would make the point the first video is trying to make. But their use of definitions is cooking their point from the get go
How did they arrive at: "Survival horror has restrictions regarding enemie movement = bad." As an opinion? Rags mentions Rimworld multiple times, and that game has a lot of cheese regarding enemy movement. Just look at all the kill-room exploits.
The game Ragzy boy forgot the title of was ‘Captain America and The Avengers’, published by Data East. The X-Men, Simpsons, TMNT & TMNT2 games were all made by Konami.
It drives me up the wall when people complain that it isn’t “true RE” because it’s not tank controls. There are arguments you can make but that is just wrong.
The issue is that most people are dumb and refuse to learn what tank controls are. Nearly every fps and third person game technically has tank controls, up is forward, left is left, right is right, down is back, and Camera position doesn't affect the controls (mostly because the camera is your face or right behind you, so it's functionally tank controls). The difference is that classic RE has set camera positions that aren't on the player, any other control setup would be awful when you round a corner and then do a hard turn the other direction or directly into a wall. Uncharted 1 is a game that should have had tank controls. Whenever the camera hard cuts from behind you to a new cinematic angle, you walk into a wall or off a cliff or do a sweet 180 into the shit you're running away from.
Whenever someone brings up the gentle giant trope, I love to show them a piece I drew about 8 years ago of this cute, effeminate little mouse character, and then describe to them that the guy who owns that character and commissioned the piece from me is a 6'6" drummer with a shaved head and a goatee. honestly if marvel what if had twisted tony into a dictator from the point he said "I am iron man" to go and rule the world, that would have been quite interesting. could have gotten the whip guy into the avengers trying to take down evil tony.
It's nice to see Mayo's shitty takes finally get called out by a bigger, more relevant channel, I still have PTSD flashbacks from his god awful Elden Ring stream. 4:29:50 It's also funny how Mayo gets mad when people use the "oh yeah, switch to the hardest difficulty and see how easy it is" argument, when he himself used that exact same argument in his "How God of War was ruined" video as some sorta "ah see, old GoW is better!" gotcha moment lmfao. It's also ironic how whiny Mayo sounds in all his videos, when his reasoning for disliking Atreus is that he's too whiny lol.
The distinction between characterization and true character doesn’t make any sense for a fictional character in film. The one is how we know the other. It’s not like comparing someone’s social media presence to their actual character IRL.
In the combat conversation and how people lean to damage over everything else, part of that is because a lot of rpgs dont give you info on the enemy besides hp. Sure i can drain 100 mp, but i have no clue how much max mp my opponent has, i have no clue how much his spells cost, i dont even know if he has some sort of mechanic to allow him to cast spells/abilities without mp, so it is always easier to focus on the more static known element
The concept that hardship and high stress environments expose your true character comes explicitly from the fact that in such scenarios you don't have time to consider and so your brain goes for a default response. You have no time or brainpower to be duplicitous. The reason for the phrase "do not judge to harshly in comfort the actions of those taken in hardship" is because of the understanding that 1) you have not been through the metaphorical crucible and faced the mirror of yourself to know if your actions would be better or worse, and 2) because people living in comfort rarely have as complete an understanding of what is necessary to be done. Consider this: which says more about a person; a man with 100 dollars to his name donating 50 dollars to a beggar, or a man who is a multimillionaire giving 50 dollars to the same beggar. One of these men has a measure of his character revelead in full, the other not so much of anything can be gleamed.
03:49:30 - Missing the point there, the first part of the game needs to be really good to create engagement and get the player invested to keep playing, absolutely nothing else. Nothing to do with time constraints or teaching the player to play or anything like that. Then the end needs to be good. Middle sadly is often neglected but here is where time constraints enter the picture. A bad ending can ruin the entire thing, but a bad start will make people not even play it. Sadly, too many games nowadays use that as a way to lure in players into a shit game (diablo 4 cough cough, great first area, then it goes to shit)
Man the font of nostalgia unleashed by the E reader. I never had one, never knew anybody who had one, but yes, we all had at least one of those gawdy fucking E reader cards lol. Anyone remember the Burger King golden promo cards?
Iron Man going on the story arc of the Black Sabbath song would be interesting. The snap fucking with his mind and turning him cruel or vindictive. I mean... we saw the stones, we saw they were able to corrupt people based on Loki's use of one of the stones. I feel like delving deeper into that would be very interesting.
37:27 interesting, because the MBTI (I only use it for writing) says that Galadriel in RoP specifically is the shadow type of Tony Stark, which means there would be the most parallels. A so close yet so far situation in that case Just thought Rags’ assessment was spot on
Honestly the old games were harder in general, I played stuff like tomba, rayman, crash bandicoop spyro etc. sure they were kids games (now that my memory is jogging) but they weren't necessarily "easy" or at least had significant skill caps.
nobody's played over half the RE series? you kidding? I've played all mainline RE games, often multiple times, including remakes. at this point I think I'm missing mainly the dead aim spinoffs really, and I'm not even old enough to have wanted to play RE 1 and 2 when they launched. There are definitely a fairly decent number of people out there who have probably played all of them, and the number of people that have played the main series like myself is probably very large, particularly considering how accessible the main series is (0, REmake, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 2 Remake, 3 Remake, 4 Remake are all multi-platform with good PC releases on Steam. 2 and 3 classic are technically still available I think, haven't tried buying much on the PS3 store in a while, and haven't had a recent PC release I'm aware of, but are also fairly simple to acquire at a reasonable price unless you're looking for one of the rarer versions, such as GCN or Dreamcast releases). With this in mind, I can confirm Rags does not have a great understanding of the concept of the older games, he showed that with his take on RE2 Remake's combat and concept, which is a very good adaptation of the classic "survival horror" gameplay present in the original, while updating the playstyle to match newer technology and game designs. while I can't be sure, I have a hunch that Rags has not played the "classic" pre-RE4 titles, which played drastically differently, and thus he's missing a huge portion of knowledge of the series and some of the concepts they tried to re-introduce in RE7 (though to how well they were re-introduced is probably very debatable).

Also, to be clear, it was a Human-Elite-Grunt-Hunter-Engineer alliance.

It would be insane to have Bobert's take after Halo 2. The whole overarching theme is Arbiter breaking free of the Covenants' religious indoctrination and realizing he had been a genocidal warlord all for a complete lie. Hell, the entire game is far more Arbiter's story than Chief's despite him being the face of the franchise.

Pouring one for Korinne tonight, lads.
Holy shit, I have heard some stories about Film Robert, but what I heard left me completely unprepared for this.
Mayo's suggestion to make games better is to add thoughtless puzzle sequences that exist to waste time. This is all fueled by the fact that he couldn't get good enough to beat GMGOW difficulty. What a scrub
But adding platforming segments won't make the hardest difficulties combat less "bullshit" do he still would complain.
FF7 Rebirth for instance adds in puzzles like that and I’m pretty sure it’s agreed by most that it’s blatant padding
Lol I didn't know he couldn't beat it on GMGOW
So he says on easy difficulty it becomes a button masher but when on the hardest difficulty where you basically HAVE to engage with every mechanic the devs have provided he still complains?
I'm so glad these hosts did their FUCKING job.

I always love the Tank control issue people have, when some people don't realize that RE 4 and 5 are technically using tank controls.

Every MovieBob video looks and sounds the same so you probably misremembered.
So the Covenant are the good guys because they have little guys and big guys… Movie Bob never disappoints 😂
Sadly, too many games nowadays use that as a way to lure in players into a shit game (diablo 4 cough cough, great first area, then it goes to shit)

nobody's played over half the RE series? you kidding?
