Thank you for this!! My husband and I fixed our washing machine today following your instructions. Our machine is not Maytag but it works in the same manner. I used large safety pins I already had. Perfect!
I do appreciate that you put on the correct outfit for whatever you're working on. Now, I am going to go put on my Samsung and LG hats to fix some of their garbage in my shop. Thanks for the video as always!
I have a Samsung top loader that off balanced. I changed the suspension rods and its still banging. Will that part that fixes the maytags fix a Samsung@bensappliancesandjunk
Thank you, thank you thank you! My basket didn't bounce as bad but definitely slammed while washing. Added the pins as a temp fix to ordering the rods. Bless You for this video. Saved me a great amount of stress.
Thank you so much for the helpful video. I was going to trash my washer and buy a new one. Instead I replaced all 4 dampers for $50 and it now runs quieter than new. Thanks, again.
I’m so grateful for this video!!!!! 48$ suspension rods from Amazon and no more scary washing machine dancing around the basement floor and your right, it was SCARRRY!!!! Thumbs up!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! My Maytag Centennial was mercilessly walking around when in spin cycle. I followed your video instructions and installed the safety pins as you demonstrated. This done, it now spins like new!! As with everything…….the price for new rods has doubled. They are no longer $60 but in fact 120+ tax I decided to try the safety pin route and boy am I glad I did.
Great tip, here’s a tip for you all. When retrieving the tension rods through the eye hole of the retainer, I take a extra tension rod or spring, turn it upside down, using the hook to grab the other hook and pull it up through the eye hole/retainer cup. 👍 it doesn’t take as much muscle.
@@Grayce523 depends, some models have a little slot, and you can slide the rods out that way. But then there’s others where you have to pull it from the bottom.
My Maytag washer tried to knock down my walls after moving and spending a little time in storage. This "fix" worked perfectly. It will hopefull last long enough to keep the unit in service until I order the new parts.
Amazing! Worked! I used 2" safety pins. Couple of additional tips from my experience. When separating the damper with the putty knife I held the bottom half with pliers because it was greasy. This allowed the top part to come off very easily. When pulling down on the safety pin part to slide it between the damper and the rod I held and pushed the pin with needle nose pliers as I pulled down on the top part of the damper. When reinstalling the top part of the rod after sliding it up through the mount, I found it was easiest just to reach down and grab the bottom of the rod with my hand so the rod stays up and you can reattach that plastic thing at the top. Very much appreciate the video. Thanks for sharing.
tried the hack and cured my whirlpool. This machine is like a Ford. Not quick and easy slots but doable if you're patient and can get underneath. Just saves time to have slots. Thank you for sharing!!!! I left the curl on the pin to hold it in place. Use pliers to hold the black housing and a dull screw driver. Pops off first try. Lay a small mirror on the floor to find the hole if you don't have slots.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!! It took me 30 minutes and $25.00 to replace my suspension rods on my washing machine!! This explanation and the video helped!!!
All I had was very small safety pins. I was able to cut them in half and use 2 per rod. Thought it might be too much but worked great. Excellent hack!!! Thank you! And I was able to remove and reinstall from the top.
So ours is about 5 years old now. Same model. I did this hack today and wow, it works! I will order the repair kit because two of the plastic inserts are gone and all four retainers are broken. (This has been happening for about a year now). Thank you for the help.
I did the hack using straight pins. Mine pins were kind of on the thin side, but my basket was not bouncing as much as the one you had in your video. So i gave it a try since my suspension rod plastic collar had some give but not as much as the one in your video. It worked great. I figured I would rather try the hack instead of buying some generic brand from Amazon and where the quality might not be the best.
Worked good for me! 2” safety pins, took most of the play out of the basket and drum. Little but of movement still but it looks more like a balance issue than a tension rod issue. Thanks for the help man!
When using the safety pin method, I only put pins in two of the suspension rods. One on the right rear rod, and one on the front left rod. When I tried pins on all four rods, the suspension was too stiff and would cause excess vibration when the washer was spinning. The Walmart sold safety pins I use are size 3 and 2 inches long. Thanks for uploading this method, Ben.
Sometimes those darn suspension rods can be a total pain in the you know what if things don't go smoothly during the process to change them. The plastic around the tub or the metal cabinet will shred your arms up if you don't protect your arms and hands. The rubber gloves he recommended is a great tip also, especially if you are going back with new rods. Amazing how they make something so simple such a headache!
Wow! I was skeptical about this and it totally worked! I don’t have any safety pins so I used large paper clips. I just snipped the paper clip ends at an angle to make it easier to push them through. Thanks for sharing this video with us!!!
Very grateful for amazing tip and great detailed instructions! It saved me hustle and money of getting a new one and I came out of the laundry room feeling a hero! Thank you 🙏🏻
I just ordered four new rods for 78$ because I don't want to do it twice,,but the video was still informative and some good tips in the comment section also..
I have this same Maytag washer/dryer pair! The only part replaced were the suspension rods. They have 2 functions: A) spring support the tub. And B) DAMPEN the movement of the tub especially during the spin cycle. The portion on these rods that provide the DAMPENING are really cheap and cheezy design. I'd say just replace em all and move on like I did and DON"T buy the knock off parts (I tried em and they were incorrect length). Cheers!!
Thanks for this fix. Just tried it on my 4 year old Whirlpool WTW5000DW3 and worked like a charm! It's been rocking and shaking for months. I kept adjusting the feet and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Glad I did a search and came across this video.
Bravo my friend. I have a Brand New Maytag MVWB765Fw. It was manufactured in 2019 but I just bought it 2 weeks ago on a major league discount and in the box factory (allegedly) new. After firing it up it was apparent the 4 inlet valve was not working so I replaced that. Then it was out of balance crazy on all cycles. Your video was the first I saw. I used a paper clip in each one so the plastic was really tight and Voila, The wife now has a brand new Maytag that works quite well thanks to your fix. I have to say WTF to Maytag. How can a washer never used out of the box 5 years old have two major defective parts in it like that? You telling me time, good ole fashioned "Time" degrades a valve and a suspension rod and its parts? Most ridiculous thing ever. My parents had a GE Washer made in 1953 that was handed down from my Great Aunt to my Mom and it lasted until 1993 when the power company bought it back along with the 40 year old GE refridgerator for 5 times what my Aunt paid for it in 1953. Dont make 'em like they used to. Thanks again Brother Maytagger!
All they are making is a disgrace and if you don't believe it just read all the reviews. They do it because they have the monopoly, you caint hardly find a washer not made by whirlpool .
I just did this today. 5/21/24 Maytag only 4 years old It works now. Not to hard. Wear a long sleeve shirt or you might get scratched up. I am still going to order new ones.
Thanks for the safety pin hack! Our Maytag machine doesn't bang around with a large-ish load now. I tried another hack where someone suggested using tarp straps with the excess wrapped around the rod, but I couldn't get the wrap to stay put, so I strapped the bottom end to the base of the washing machine as there are holes there. Didn't last long as one strap unhooked at the bottom then all we'd hear is the loose strap and metal hook slapping against the metal "box" of the washer. I was going to try using split shaft 1/4” collars which is a really nice hack, but it costs about $25/set in Canada. Cheaper than a set of suspension rods, but still not as cheap as the tarp straps (1.99 ea). So I kept on looking for other solutions and thankfully came across your video. We only had three large safety pins at home, so I used your method, but used the cut side on one as my fourth (with the safety locking head part). It took a bit more effort to insert into the plastic bit, but I eventually got it in by hammering the cut end a little more tapered. It's been about 2 weeks and no annoying banging noise when running. Rather disappointed to hear Maytag was bought by Whirlpool and made in the same factory. You'd think "Designed, Assembled, blah blah in America" would stand for better quality which is why we bought a Maytag washer. If they just added split collars to the rods (or safety pins ;), it would probably solve the issue permanently. Worst case scenario maybe you have to pull out the rods and tighten the split collars every X years.
Thanks! I have a Maytag bravos that I've had nothing but problems with. Taking my machine apart right now, lol. Had to replace the actuator last month, and definitely sure the suspension rods are bad now so hopefully this fix works. PS I don't have safety pins but metal wiring for jewelry making which is about the same thickness. A bit easier to bend and shape hopefully it'll hold up
Always great videos this one is particularly one of my favorites because it was banging when you started it and that just showed that everything of the seed in the place will say amazing. I am fixed my dryer and washer because of this channel I'm going to thank you I do have an advantage of being a handyman though but reality is that anyone can do it if they really put effort.
I wanted to make sure we got a REALLY BAD unit to do this test on, because there's always a ton of other videos I can do where one that's in awful shape is needed to show before/after on suspension rod, or other balance issue fixes.
@@bensappliancesandjunk no worry you're a champion there's no doubt I watched some of your videos I couldn't even count. I have a Maytag and whirlpool. The Maytag washer and dryer to sit in the garage brand new barely used I'm a family member that died and it's in excellent condition so I keep the whirlpools working until there's just no hope and then I'm going to swap out to the ones in the garage with your brand-new literally there are Maytag and they're really nice no mice or anything has been up in there messing with them. I'll have to do a test on the washing machine and check the wires when I swap out the make sure there wasn't any mice chewing on something while they've been sitting out there or whatever but I still do everything out the best I could I'm good for a while I'm not buying into the new garbage that they are selling the day it's ridiculous garbage thank you
Before I saw this video, I bought a 'compatible' suspension rod set off of eBay for $20 and it was 1.5 inches shorter than the original rods, which I didn't know until I replaced them. The tub was scraping up against the top lid, so I managed to wash laundry for 2 weekends while leaving the top of the washer unscrewed in the back and raised a bit with folded towels on the two top corners. Luckily I saved the original rods so I could measure them (25.5 inches) to get suitable correct replacements. Sadly, shipment to Hawaii for these OEM parts is about $50 for the parts plus $30 shipping. So I tried your method with the safety pins, replaced the rods again with these refurbished ones I just did, and it worked! Hopefully I can get an OEM set of these rods during tax return time next February, so thanks for your fix! Worked like a charm! If they hold out to February next year, I might just skip ordering the OEM parts, and when the refurbished rods give out, I'll just add more safety pins, or get a new cheap washer. Your video REALLY helped me out. Thanks again!
By the way, my machine is a cheap $400 Roper model RTW4516FW2 and the rods need to be 25.5" long. Your safety pin method worked great and I don't feel bad that I wasted $20 on a cheap set of rods off of eBay because you saved me from paying over $80 for the OEM kit, and probably $400 for a repair person to come over and do the job. Thanks!
I had to come back just to comment this guy is genius I couldn't even do laundry cause it would shut off during spin due to the extreme out of balance deal I couldn't even tell that the spring rods were bad except it did bounce 2 or 3 times when pushed down and released. I used paper clips and 1 was a little worse I glued the spring to the top plastic piece then glued right above the white cap thatclips on that plastic piece like a dream it works now . Now I now before ordering 78 dollar suspension rods that's what I need . I could do it all rightfrom the top reaching between the tub and the metal cover with a flashlight and bare hands 30 mins easy
Another great video. Love the type of "in-a-pinch" fix that you did. Reminds me of the way people used to do things back in the day. Stay well and stay safe. :)
Great video! This is exactly what is wrong with my machine. 😬I was gifted this exact machine when I mentioned to a family member that I was going to buy a new machine 🙄😩 thankful & appreciative but this is THE WORST washing machine I have EVER had. I hated it from the 1st use
Thank you so much for this tip ! I coulnd't find safety pins , instead I used just regular paper clip, I put it on all 4 rods and now our washer is very quiet ;) better than new. BTW, our Maytag washer is 10 years old ;) This video saved me 144 USD ( brand new OEM suspension rods from Maytag).
My washer is about two years old its more like a blender it tears holes in clothes.Spins them into the side and wrinkles everything. The Maytag dryer is not much better clothes end up wrinkled and not dry after two hours.
This video changed my life. I was unemployed, unhealthy, and alone. Then I watched this video and my life was transformed forever. Now I'm the CEO of a successful company, I have a six pack, I'm happily married, and have two healthy sons. Thank you Bens Appliances and Junk for the amazing video!!!
Thanks for this! I literally just bought this washer from HD 4 days ago…and expect to have problems in the future….flat out couldn’t afford a Speed Queen - which actually is too much of a machine for two retired bums like me & Hubby! Point being, Folks - treat your old appliances like cherished family members and do your best to make them last as long as possible! And don’t get me started on the crappy quality of modern safety pins!! As a semi professional seamstress… These sorts of cheap chinese pins just drive me freaking insane! The points aren’t even sharp enough to pierce light fabrics without damage and they bend out is shape like wet noodles. Ugh!!
Looks like four genuine Maytag suspension rods are about $72 shipped. If I was doing this myself, I think I'd wuss out and buy new rods - my washer dryer are in a tiny shallow area, I'd not want to do this twice, lol. Interesting that the product description says that this Maytag was manufactured originally by Whirlpool. Turns out you can buy the top suspension hangers, those white cups with the slots for under $10 for four, you just find them listed as a Whirlpool part.
The price honestly varies by model. Some are not too expensive and are reasonable but others I've seen retail for $100+ and even wholesale is bad. Additionally there have been shortages on a few oddball ones lately too
Try tightening the flywheel first to fix unbalanced load issues. It worked for me. Turn your washer on its side ( tape the lid shut to prevent it from opening and disconnect the water supply lines) Use a ¼” allen wrench to tighten the flywheel (bolt is in the middle of the round wheel) . It will be tight to turn. You can use a short piece of pipe on your wrench for extra leverage. Wear gloves so if the wrench slips you won’t hurt your hands. Hope it works🤞
@@jossiel24 I used this quick fix successfully on my Maytag Bravos washer. I’m not sure if other Maytag washers are made the same way. It’s worth checking anything make to see if it’s a possible solution.
That machine is not terribly old yet, it’s all rusty and suspension was already wearing out?! Very disturbing to see…;( This was a GREAT video! Thank you, sir! I found it very informative !
I bought a maytag washer about 7 years ago because it has a 10 year warranty. A year later the washing machine had this issue where it was bouncing around. I could not figure out the problem and it was difficult to contact the manufacturer for warranty repair. I decided to purchase a basic whirlpool that costs hundreds less than the Maytag and didn’t come with a 10 year warranty label on the washing machine. It’s been working perfectly and have not had any issues. If this is such a common problem with Maytag why not redesign it? I will never buy another Maytag washing machine.
@@jsblusmokebbq4343 You are correct, Whirlpool bought them out, they both use to be very good, not anymore, Speed Queen will last a lifetime, only one now all American made.
This is a great tip, if it lasts for a while. Otherwise, it could be more beneficial just buying the OEM replacements, hoping they will at least last as long as the original one's did. Which in my case was 4-years.
oh my god this worked. My next step was spending $1000 at Home Depot. A brake spring hook tool made it a lot easier to pull the rods through the top too
I wonder if using four short sections of a pool noodle would provide more damping between the two sections of plastic holders where you put the safety pins ?
I recently had to remove the washer tub and I found lots of mud and gunk was causing the machine to go out of balance even after I replaced the rods. Once I removed the tub and cleaned the bottom, the washer ran smoothly.
Is the room/walls really shaking during the spin test at 10:45? If not, then perhaps turn off image stabilization if that's a feature on your camera, which apparently is trying to compensate for the machine wobbling by digitally manipulating the image.
if you own the washer and its yours you can do what you want but as a tech what are you going to charge for a time consuming job that probably is not going to hold up. Just dealt with a maytag washer banging and put new suspension rods in and its still banging the sides. done this job many times but now and then you get one like this. also replaced the tub hub kit and still banging.
I thought this would not work. I just did it, and it does work. Thank you!

I'll have to do a test on the washing machine and check the wires when I swap out the make sure there wasn't any mice chewing on something while they've been sitting out there or whatever but I still do everything out the best I could I'm good for a while I'm not buying into the new garbage that they are selling the day it's ridiculous garbage thank you
This works. I used straight pins with the plastic head, May not last forever but machine spins perfect now.
Thank you. Seems to have worked. Even if I end up buying new rods this confirms my problem.
Thank you for the tips. These tips will also help when we install the replacement rods.
Thanks!
in the 1960s GE used a cement block attached to the bottom of thier washing machinnes to balance them and keep them from rocking
Front loads still have those for sure
used the hack super thumbs up
This worked great - thanks so much!!!
Thanks for you help and clarification how to do this
I had to come back just to comment this guy is genius I couldn't even do laundry cause it would shut off during spin due to the extreme out of balance deal I couldn't even tell that the spring rods were bad except it did bounce 2 or 3 times when pushed down and released.
Good stuff, keep it coming Ben.
Thanks so much for this video ! Saved me a repairman to come & charge me !
Another great video. Love the type of "in-a-pinch" fix that you did. Reminds me of the way people used to do things back in the day. Stay well and stay safe. :)
back in the day? We’ve never stopped fixing thing. Put the phone down!
❤❤thanks for the tip I gave it a try and IT WORKED!!!❤❤ we appreciate your help and knowledge!!!😊
I did it and it worked thank you very much, sir❤🎉
I bought a Maytag washer and it’s probably this worst piece of equipment I’ve ever bought
That’s all appliances these days sadly the only one I’ve seen that’s still good quality and classic design is Speed Queen
It's NOT a real Model A806 Washing Machine...that's for sure!!!...these are plastic tin cans now...
If you want to change your mind and think it's the greatest just to buy a Samsung
I got a maytag been worked on 3 times piece of shit
My washer is about two years old its more like a blender it tears holes in clothes.Spins them into the side and wrinkles everything. The Maytag dryer is not much better clothes end up wrinkled and not dry after two hours.
This worked for me! So far so good! Thank you
His english teacher is so proud of him.
Ugh!!
The safety pins, yes!!!!
@@frenchbullielove 💕
The trick really worked. Thank you
Life saver on a sunday great video🔥
Additionally there have been shortages on a few oddball ones lately too
Why do you want to rip off the customer with the pen just install new ones and be done with the job when you're charging 150 .00 an hour?
@@kimbrosappliance5311 he's showing us what we can do if we can't afford to fix it or are in a pinch.
Different machine
@@jossiel24 I used this quick fix successfully on my Maytag Bravos washer. I’m not sure if other Maytag washers are made the same way. It’s worth checking anything make to see if it’s a possible solution.
That machine is not terribly old yet, it’s all rusty and suspension was already wearing out?! Very disturbing to see…;( This was a GREAT video! Thank you, sir! I found it very informative !
Totally worked. Thanks man.
Buy Speed Queen, problem solved for the rest of your life.
Maytag and Whirlpool are made at the same factory using the same parts
@@jsblusmokebbq4343 You are correct, Whirlpool bought them out, they both use to be very good, not anymore, Speed Queen will last a lifetime, only one now all American made.
That 10 year warrenty is on the one good part in the machine.
I have hated my maytag since day 1 I'll never buy another one. Nothing but problems
This is a great tip, if it lasts for a while. Otherwise, it could be more beneficial just buying the OEM replacements, hoping they will at least last as long as the original one's did. Which in my case was 4-years.
IT WORKED !!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
oh my god this worked. My next step was spending $1000 at Home Depot. A brake spring hook tool made it a lot easier to pull the rods through the top too
It worked. Thanks !
Great trick worked awesomeness me thanks a bunch
I wonder if using four short sections of a pool noodle would provide more damping between the two sections of plastic holders where you put the safety pins ?
Nice hack.
Sliding a movers blanket under the machine to protect the wood floor when you're tilting it would be a good idea.
Where’s the link to buy new suspension rods?
I recently had to remove the washer tub and I found lots of mud and gunk was causing the machine to go out of balance even after I replaced the rods. Once I removed the tub and cleaned the bottom, the washer ran smoothly.
Thanks so much! Very easy hack and fixed my probmem!
Thank you
awesome fix
Is the room/walls really shaking during the spin test at 10:45? If not, then perhaps turn off image stabilization if that's a feature on your camera, which apparently is trying to compensate for the machine wobbling by digitally manipulating the image.
Oh odd! I didnt notice that. I'll look into that!
Thanks for the tip. Very easy instructions to follow for being the brother of Bubba J. (not too bright) Thanks
Thank you very much! It works for me.
Excellent video! Subscribed.💜💜
Thanks for the video
Great video. Thanks for the tips.
Glad it was helpful!
if you own the washer and its yours you can do what you want but as a tech what are you going to charge for a time consuming job that probably is not going to hold up.
Just dealt with a maytag washer banging and put new suspension rods in and its still banging the sides. done this job many times but now and then you get one like this. also replaced the tub hub kit and still banging.
We invented shims to solve the problem. I have to make a video on it soon
