Thanks Mark. I’ve been feeling really down lately about the situation and these videos cheer me up immensely. Lots of fun. Reminds me of being a kid poking around in swamps and bogs.
Joseph Dobis - it reminds me of being with my Dad as a child, in north Wales. We’d walk up the river, making small dams, looking for fools gold........we knew where the best spots were. But he’s too old for that now, he’d be on his arse within 10 minutes 😂
Mark-nificent! I used to give my Koi loads of Daphnia as a natural laxative many year's ago it never failed to get their appetite back. I was hoping that you was going to show how to get Freshwater Shrimp! Another great video... Take care my friend 👍😷👍 BIG THUMBS-UP 👌😷👍
Back to thank you for making this video. You inspired me to go to a patch of forest along the Wisconsin River to gather daphnia and other micro-crustaceans from some of the small ponds and pools a few yards from the riverbank. I plan to start a couple of cultures for the Summer. I hope to keep them going through the Winter. I've noticed that the fish really color up when they get regular feeding of live foods.
Videos like this are invaluable to folks like me. Like 90% of my tanks, i would rather gather from my local waterways. Please make more like this. Thank you from an aspiring american fish keeper your channel has taught me more than you realize.
Ps i watch on my game console and talk from my cellphone. Its easier that way 🙄. Technologically... uhhh dim i guess would be a good word. Stay blessed Mr. Mark. we're pulling for poor Skinny!
I had a wonderful time walking though the woods with you and having you show us all the plants and goodness in nature. Thanks and hope you do another one sometime. Glad skinny minnie is on the mend!! 🌟⭐️💫
Thanks for the mix of nature and hiking to add to the hobby. We have vernal pools in the Northeast USA. This is the migration season for salamanders to lay eggs and the pools are loaded with fairy shrimp. Thanks for the skills and wisdom, Jim
Hello Mark, gave you a thumbs up 👍🏻 and subscribed to you. You are quite a gentleman and very knowledgeable sir I loved your video and I hope you don’t mind me saying but I love you too my friend may God bless you and keep you well. Please keep up the good work!!!
I've got a 2 foot by 3 foot plastic box in the garden that gets a lot of daphnia and sliders that I harvest all summer usually tho this year I went to check it a few days ago and I've got a female newt in there and at least 8 babies about inch and half long still have there Gill raikes so I'll have to wait for my daphnia lol
Great Video as always Mark, I use 3 food grade tubs (around 20 litres) and collect rain water in. Then place half a dozen catapa leaves in the tub with an airstone. I then grab a small net full of Daphina from a local pond and wait around 2 weeks before I start harvesting. The 2 weeks provides plenty of time for them to establish a colony that allows me to harvest daily.
Hi Mark. I have a request. I have not seen a video that talks about what types of leaves and trees can be put in the aquarium and what is the value of each .. I'm mostly talking about those that can be found in the area. Thanks
Great video on free food Mark 👍🏼 I've had a colony of daphnia for a few years now I keep them in a old aquarium in my greenhouse so the water is lovely and green, they are now multiplying by the day, I'm glad skinny mini is doing well now 🤞🏼, stay safe 🙏🏼.
Hi, I don't follow you for a long time, but since then, I'va watched all your vids, and it's a very good content you have here. This video is very good !
Do you need to wait for warmer temps? or the daphnias need to be found in specific water bodies? Got a huge river and stagnating big puddles in the woods near my house. Couldn't find much, but I live in Canada, Quebec and even last night we had a fall back to -1 celsius. I'm dying to use nature to my advantage lol
Great vid as usual, Mark. I went out with the kids and found some pond life to bring home - some daphnia, mosquito larvae and a bunch of other micro citters. Is there anything I shouldn’t be putting in my tank? I’m based in there UK. Thanks!
Thank you soooo much went out and caught millions of daphnia soooooo easy not to mention the great great looking drift wood for my aquariums while catching them
Hey Mark, I really enjoy your channel. Can you dry leaves, add a protein , to make the dough for a comet goldfish? I have raspberry leaves, leaves from a lilac tree, cottonwood leaves regularly available. This year I will be growing garlic, potatoes, squash, and ginger so I hope to be successful enough to have those types of leaves as well. Is it possible to incorporate any of those? I've had my comet goldfish for five years. He wasn't a fan of a few repashy foods I have tried, but also I would like to try making my own food if possible. Thank you again for all of the great videos!
Ok first you can definitely tell she loves her blood worms lol. Thank you so much for this video I’m about to go search for some right now. I was about to pay $25 on aquabid to order some in lol. Great video as always thank you again my friend
Absolutely brilliant video Mark thanks so much for doing that I appreciate it. I will be going to harvest some of my own. I have a question as long as you don't think I'm been a pain, do any tropical fish eat fresh water shrimp? as I know were there's loads of them during the summer months.
Old video, I know, but I really need to share a tip for catching daphnia like that. I always bring an aquarium net, like yours, but also a couple of zip ties. Combine the two with a tree branch and you have a 1 meter fishing net and no wet feet.
stagnate water that explains everything, i was looking directly in the small streams. thanks for the tip - even a year of Covid later.....stay healthy my friend
oohh bless her little heart, when you first tipped them in she was right at the glass, like a little street urchin with her face smooshed against a window looking at all the goodies inside. Then you took the light away and she slowly turned and started to swim dejectedly away then....FOOD PARTY whoop whoop 🎉 She could be skinny Minny =Minny when she builds herself up. Great video and nice shots from the streams eye view.
That's a cool subject . It can be an expensive hobby enough as it is. Can you tell me what's the temperature like when you start collecting ? I'm from Montreal and now it's like 12 degrees now in the day time. It can still freeze at night .I feel like it's probably to cold still.
That’s amazing! I wonder if the streams in a nearby city park are similar. Do all fish eat these? If I grow my own mosquito larvae, would that be good for my fish? I have guppies, balloon mollies, a couple of bettas, clown killifish, kuhli loaches, and two neon tetras. Would love to get them food that is nutritious and satisfies any hunting urges.
Yep I leave pools of water around the yard to catch mosquito larvae...and my fish absolutely love them i got angels, swordtails, gouramis and rainbow sharks that go berserk for them.
Hey Mark thanks for the vid! Great way to save money. Btw i have got a challenge for you as well for during this lockdown. Try to breed hara jerdoni (asian stone catfish). They are really cute little fish! And theres is almost no info about how to breed apart from a video on youtube and some on the web
Actually i found an article from 2003 describing how someone spawned them. However i am not experienced at all at breeding so i wanted to ask you to try.
Cadis Fly Larvae? How do you spell that? Here I thought I discovered something, and you knew what they were. I've only seen them at one place in all my life. The ones I've seen are constructed more orderly. They use tiny pebbles that match in size, one on each side, then progressing smaller to larger as it nears the opening.
Hello mark I have just managed to watch feed your fish for free are daphnia in most ponds or just woodland ones. I have access to several ponds on a farm is it worth looking look forward to the reply all the best. Carl
In case you don't already know; you can eat the Beech leaves yourself, they're not just great for shrimp (thank you for that tip though, I will give it a try). They're better at the start of Spring when they're semi-translucent, and you want the leaves that sprout from the fattest end of the branches if you want the best flavour. They taste a bit like lemon and apple peel to me, a bit like Wood Sorrel.
@@MARKSAQUATICS I can tell! I'm the same with bushcraft myself, I've been doing it for years, but I'm really new to aquatics - someone gave me a 25l tank at the start of the lockdown so I've just been growing out some minnow fry in it with my daughter, and now I've got a new addiction :) I've just watched your Paludarium playlist as I really like the idea of native tanks, and I've got to say I'm very jealous mate, it's excellent.
Gday mate...that little bloodworm set up you have, did you make a video about that? I'm in Australia and i can't buy live bloodworms around me. Could you briefly explain how it works?
Native/cold water fish are the new hottest fish by far,,,,,,, sadly no real info... I'm dying for a qualified fish-tuber to do a review of chillers. They are expensive and I want one that works if Im gonna spend money.... oh well for now doin daily water changes egh..

I inadvertently sort of half copied this video / idea - I swear it was coincidence. Yours is way better anyway so will link to it! Now off to find a pond!!
As for the doggy’s peeing all over the nice wood, and I respect that you respect they need to find their way home, but get some gloves and put that in a bucket and change the water a few times and there ya go, way less doggy evidence affecting the tank. 😋 Also just letting nature be is cool too. Keeping the path looking nice and authentic.

Interesting video mate enjoyed seeing the woods very different to Queensland where I am located 👍👍👍👍
I remember finding daphnia as a kid in Melbourne but now I can't find them. How about in QLD?
Thats so cool im gonna have to try this you have very informative content
Excellent video, I’m going to take a net and jug with me tomorrow when I walk the dogs!

Wow Mark, you are very lucky to have access to those foods :)
You and your family be safe also; very worrying times indeed.
I'm off to find a pond soon. Thanks for showing how easy it is.
Thanks for the walk in the woods Mark. Nothing like that within easy walking distance for us, so really enjoyed that! 🙂
Great video Sir! Loads of information and some amazing camera shots.

Do you have a video on how to culture bloodworms? Your videos are amazing I'll be watching from Australia 👍
No. Its very time consuming thing to do. Its easier to buy them.

Lovely video mark, I felt I was with you on your walk, 3 meters apart of course. :]
Thanks, Mark, I just bought some Daphnia and I live next to the water. LOL.
another great video.
Isn't there a risk of parasites when feeding live food to fish from an outside source?
Yep.
