How to Spool a Winch Cable
Переглядів 12 тис.4 роки тому
Properly installing or "spooling" a winch cable is is one of the most important parts of proper winch usage. Spooling the winch cable means that the cable is evenly spread across the drum and doesn't overlap. This allows for much easier and much safer winching when you are out on the trails. Although this process is easier with more than one person, you can absolutely spool you own winch cable ...
Left Foot Braking in Side by Side Vehicles
Переглядів 1,6 тис.4 роки тому
Left foot braking is a valuable skill in all platforms, and has specific applications with side by side vehicles. Left foot braking allows the driver to operate the vehicle more safely and mechanically gently, while at the same time greatly expanding the driver's performance potential for higher speeds and better control. Utilizing proper left foot braking takes time, as well as some trial and ...
10 Tips for Off Road Driving With Independent Front Suspension
Переглядів 29 тис.4 роки тому
Independent suspension vehicles offer dramatic benefits for high speed vehicle handling and daily driving road duties, but can become a bit of a hinderance on off road terrain as you approach more and more difficult obstacles. Independent front suspension vehicles do not flex and articulate as well as vehicles with a solid front axle, and generally have smaller and more fragile front end compon...

I think you should spend a little more money putting a straight axle conversion on one of these. And then tow and go wherever you want.
All good reasons not to have an independent front suspension if you’re gonna go four wheeling. Just saying.😊
I appreciate all the tangential information. I didn't get the one detail that I was searching for out of this because my line attaches to my winch differently, but I gained a lot of related details from this video!
30+ years off road, and I just learned 3 things!
Where are yall located?
i am a woman so therefore i can do an egoless assessment of my self and vehicle 💫
Doesn't matter the terrain, never put the tubs in the wheel centre, just don't even with PAS it sticll will have situations that you will have a high possibility of breaking your thumbs! Nearly done it in simple rutted suftish mud and a hidden log, so unless you know exactly what is under the wheels and you know nothing will bite back (so you need to know whats under what the wheels are going over ie anything physically hidden) then go for you life with broken thumbs...
I actually have no idea why im watching this. Been off road for years.. and yet, here I am..🤔
I initially learned one foot driving especially driving clutch vehicles back in the day, but after I while I learned two foot which is much better. It takes a while to get used to and not ride the brakes, but it makes a big difference hitting the brakes faster. There's also studies out there where it's been proven better, but it takes time and practice until it's engraved in your brain.
Search out the Land Rover training films from the 1980s and 90s and also British Army driver training for Defenders. Loads more footage of good and bad practices.
The D1 is beautiful🤌

Thank you so much for great lessons such these, caught me exactly at the right time
Excellent video, and yes I am from New Zealand 🇳🇿 we have some amazing off road trails here in NZ. I have x2 4x4 vehicles Toyota FJ40 and Suzuki Vitara front and rear lockers in both vehicles. Keep up the good work, I would love to do one of your courses.
i just discovered your channel, I greatly appreciate the information. Question, Should I inflate my tires after airing down if I'm going to camp in the same place for a week or so?
would have been beneficial if you showed the techniques rather then just talking the whole time...
Tip 4 is so difficult. lol We are a family of 6 and a 60lb dog, so we travel with a very full vehicle. Added skid plate, roof rack and swing-out hitch with full size spare tire, we are carrying a lot of weight by default. We have a 2023 Subaru Ascent as our offroad vehicle. I know at least one person who has one as well that does way harder stuff than we will, but he comes in at over 6,000lbs (vehicle stock weight of about 4,600lbs). We probably push 5,600lbs with our stuff. Love the video though, thanks for the tips!
Loved this
Awesome vid, love,the content
Wyatt is back! nice!
Two clicks of the parking break is a bad idea for drum break vehicles, particularly the 4runner and Tacoma as they will lock up and bend if you winch through the locking. Use a hill instead for these vehicles.
How does this apply to the new bronco?
The whole video? The Bronco has ifs so yeah…
Are you wearing La Sportiva mountaineering boots? A crampon compatible boot would be a tough driving shoe… Great video. Thanks!
unsprung weight is not an issue off-roading.
What’s the best line to go over gravestones?
These videos are exactly what I have been looking for, thank you! I was out on a group run yesterday and asking about how do I learn/develop my driving skills and one of the members sent this to me :)
Wish I saw this before I blew up my gx Cv. I think they were aftermarket, fwiw.
Nice to know about the figure 8 as a possibility. Would have been great to see the same test with a really powerful winch. Pull till something lets go.
Love this video! Wish New Hampshire wasn't such a trek away! I'd love to come learn. Might have to do some more local things first though....but I live on the gulf coast!!! LOL
What a timely video, thanks. I will be picking up a 4wd 4Runner in the near future. I had a 73 full time 4wd Blazer a long time ago and that thing was a tank.
The towing thing doesn't make sense, most Toyotas running IFS since about 2000 run an 8in front and rear ring&pinion. I've never heard this before.
Great video thank you
What’s the front bumper on the taco??
Not much illustrations
have watched many repair videos and had wondered how strong it would be without the burry. i see most taper all the way down to 1 strand but yankum rope only goes down to 4 when they taper
Step 1. Do a solid axle swap. Step 2. Enjoy driving off-road.
Good to know about the strength of the figure 8. My old 5/16" winch line recently broke after about 10 years of wheeling. I've been turning it into winch extensions and it was super easy to do a deep bury eye splice using nothing but a cheap ball point pen and duct tape. Definitely possible on the trails.
I would rather keep the halt-shaft as the weak point, than blow the front diff
you deserve to have millions of subscribers, this content is awesome! greetings from Argentina!
It's actually the case that the contact patch is better for independent suspension, especially double wishbone. This is true on surfaces of different heights as well as in turns. In turns , independent suspension "gains camber" .. it sounds backwards but that's how it is said... the camber goes negative .. what this does is pulls the tread back towards the surface when the side wall has flexed and the tread folds in towards the center of the car. ... the negative camber under load puts the tread back on the road. Independent suspension also resists bump steer. independent suspension is also immune to torque lifting. The main trade off is *usually* less flex although sometimes it's not bad. I have a factory locker in the rear and it's IRS. I agree that you should not use it unless you need it and I try not to use mine on any turns in order to avoid scrubbing. BLD works so well ... you really don't need the locker unless you get stuck or unless you're sure you have a wheel off the ground want to be sure you will keep good control.
And independent rear suspension ? I'm kidding. It's just that nobody talks about IRS. I have IFS and IRS. Good advice though! I did 2 inch front and rear and only went up 1 inch on tires. I still got to a 28 degree breakover angle. It's plenty. About 40 degrees approach and breakover. New suburban and Tahoe are full independent suspension.
nice video tips sir, very helpfull
awesome crash course \m/
Geez, I didn’t realize there was so much I had to do. I just picked up my first winch, installing when my bumper comes Monday. Supposedly, I have to wrap it with at least 1000 lbs and my manual says don’t unspool the last 10’ or the red colored section. Thanks for the video! I’m probably going to die.
Great video!!👍
Great content and your school looks awesome. I wish you were closer to me as I would sign up in a heartbeat.
Please keep going!!!! You are saving me thousands!!!
Wanting to start off road my geo metro
Check our Marlin Crawler for the strength of Toyota front diff. On their 3rd gen Tacoma, their team runs 40 inch tires, with double transfer cases and final crawl ratio of 500:1. They never had issues with their Tacoma front differential on their setup and they’ve driven over 60,000 miles and did trails including the Rubicon and Dusy Ershim.
Hi there folks. Im looking for some advice. When driving in slick/sloppy conditions i seem to be geeting an understreer condition. As far as i know ive not lot slip diffs or anything. Anybody have any ideas or potential ideas for cures? My temptation is to bung a lsd up front and see uf that helps.
