    This dude is doing exactly what you aren’t supposed to do with paper as a kid with plastic(when he cuts the bottles up into squares). Also it turned out pretty good.

    This just popped up in our suggested videos again since we made ours a few weeks back. Loved this project when you first did it and still do now! It’s great to see you use this in some of your newer videos too. Thanks for being one of the main reasons we experimented with HDPE ourselves! 🖤

    While watching this video, E-bay is advertising plastic mallets for anything from $6 to $17 so on first glance this project does not appear economic. It is when one considers the acquiring of additional "new skills" to one's range of talents that it's value becomes evident. When we learn a new skill set we all have to start with small easy projects and or practice pieces no matter the type of skill being learnt; sewing, writing, carpentry, pattern making, casting, welding, public speaking, swimming, running, rowing, sailing. Well at least the idea is to start with small projects to build up the knowledge and confidence, but some people like to jump in the very deep end.

    • @BlackBeardProjects
      @BlackBeardProjects  7 років тому +1

      Agreed! :) there's only a way to learn a skill! :)

      I see you point regarding cost, but I'm doing this as a hobby and enjoying learning a new skill.

    great job one thing i may suggest is to mix up the melted hdpe like dough with silicone gloves before putting it in the mold this will make sure the chips are completely fused and well blended together and make it much less prone to chipping

    • @BlackBeardProjects
      @BlackBeardProjects  8 років тому +1

      Yep this is a nice suggestion! :) I tried to achieve that by mixing the melted hdpe with a flat screwdriver, as far as I can tell it's working pretty well :D

    • @funny1048youtube
      @funny1048youtube 8 років тому

      yeah the reason i suggested this is because when i melted hdpe a while back i made it into a disc just to test it for strength so i took 2 channel lock pliers and tryed to bend it and it cracked in half the weird thing was that when it cracked it fractured in a weird pattern almost like how the plastic flakes were originally melted together yet it looked completely solid before breaking it. the next attempt i tryed melting the hdpe i mixed it together and i tryed to break it again this time no matter how much strength i used the plastic would not snap it was super strong. but your mallet looks awesome it looks very durable and hdpe is awesome stuff and almost any kind of plastic container is made of it.

    • @BlackBeardProjects
      @BlackBeardProjects  8 років тому

      Thank you my friend :) Sorry if I'm reading this just now, I don't know how I missed it :'( Anyway, I agree with you, mixing it really help to make it stronger! This is the 4th mallet I made and I really enjoy them :D

  • @1pcfred
    @1pcfred 6 років тому +3

    You can get the same effect melting down plastic grocery bags and alternating the colors of bags that you use. But you need a load of bags to get any volume of plastic. The really thin plastic bags are HDPE.

    • @BlackBeardProjects
      @BlackBeardProjects  6 років тому

      Nice to know! :) Thanks Paul!

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 6 років тому

      You need a hill of those bags to make a chunk of plastic though. They are mostly air. There's a woman on UA-cam that irons them. It's one of the strangest DIY HDPE methods I've ever seen.

    Great looking mallet. When you put the handle in how do you keep it from bottoming out so when you surface the end you don't cut down to the handle? Do you hold it up a little?

    • @BlackBeardProjects
      @BlackBeardProjects  7 років тому

      I made a mark on the pipe at the right depth, the molten hdpe is very viscous and it's pretty hard to push the handle inside :) so I think there is no problem for that!

      +Black Beard Projects A tip based on what I have seen on other channels: placing the basic information such as the used wood in the description. Another option what other channels do is to at the end of the video giving such information or a simple guide/tour of the project or regularly do a Q&A for frequent questions. Last one can will be necessary if this channel stays growing as it does so can be easier to try now then later.

    • @BlackBeardProjects
      @BlackBeardProjects  8 років тому

      Yep! Those are all nice suggestions :) In my other vid I used some text to describe the materials, in this one I was not feeling the necessities of doing so because all the material I used where just random leftover piece :'D I will do it anyway if you guys prefer so! :) Thank you for the comment!

    • @norman7179
      @norman7179 6 років тому

      I've heard that since the plastic is slick, it tends to slide between the cutters and bind up. Also the plastic is tougher and thicker than paper so some shredders won't hold up for long.

      it shouldnt be too hard to make youre own its basicly a realy big stack of interlocking sharp rings welded to a driven shaft with some knurling done on the edges , if you have a lathe you should be able to make youre own from solid shaft and use a honking big electric motor with a gear reduction to run the two axles oposite of eachother
      www.imwnet.com/images/steel-shredder-big.jpg , you could prolly shred metal plate if you have enough torque

    I see you have taken video production tips from Diresta, pacing and such. Use of music is ok, at least not distracting like some. I like that you use cheap and easy tools, so some people won't think this is out of their reach, like cnc machines, etc. the only suggestion I can come up with, and its not a big deal, where you have the can in the oven heating the plastic, maybe have a clock nearby. other than that, I can say , overall great and interesting work.

    Its a cool project, but all this work for a 5 $ tool is a little bit workless and expensive even for a personalized tool

      @BlackBeardProjects  7 років тому +1

      This is worth much more than 5 bucks to me :) It's all about what you enjoy doing, I love to make homemade tools and recycling stuff. I've done 4 of these even though I use only one just for the fun of it xD

    I dont think that plastic was HDPE , HDPE is kind of a milky transparnty type look and softer.

    • @BlackBeardProjects
      @BlackBeardProjects  7 років тому

      Lol, why would I lie to you? It's HDPE :) It's true many time is more translucent, but it comes in many shapes and color :)

    • @Ralphgtx280
      @Ralphgtx280 7 років тому

      I don't think your lying I think you just think you are possibly miss informed. Just the look of it it looks harder than HDPE it is probably PET if you look at the bottom of one of those bottles you will probably find a 1 inside of a triangle indicating it is PET , if I am wrong you will find a 2 inside the triangle indicating HDPE

    • @BlackBeardProjects
      @BlackBeardProjects  7 років тому

      Ralphgtx280 Well, there is a 2, I am dead sure this is hdpe man :) Also as far as I know pet can't be remelted like this!

    • @Ralphgtx280
      @Ralphgtx280 7 років тому +1

      My bad it just looked wrong , PET can be it just needs to be dried first and is a little more sensitive , I injection mold scrap PET fairly often
