This is one of the first reviews I've seen of the Dialog cc - at least from a non-vendor's perspective. It confirmed my positive impressions of the pen (especially by comparison to the Dialog 3). Looking forward to having one of my own!
Late comment! Nice haircut! :) Great review, thanks for it! I have a 3 and a CC. Love them both. I've had the 3 for maybe 5 years. I got the CC as a retirement present to myself. I bought it the day after it showed up at the shop. It was a festive, but worrying occasion! The one I bought had an immediate and massive flaw. The mechanism froze up. Total train wreck. The wonderful folks in the shop swapped it out for another one. It me a little while to get used to the mechanism. The 3 has a pronounced catch in it when you retract the nib. The CC has a very smooth mechanism; it's easy to turn it too far. I was also worried because of the previous train wreck. I was scared to death: oh no, is this a lemon!? But all is well. After a couple of months of constant use, I can say that my CC doesn't skip at all. It's sopping wet! The roll stop doesn't bother me at all. I replaced the rose gold nib with an nib and the roll stop helps me to rotate the pen just so. It's a wonderful pen.
1:47 although the mechanisms look very similar from the outside, there are less moving parts involved on the CC since there is no longer a retracting clip. This may play a part in the improved feeling that you observe. Owning both models, I agree that the CC feels a little more precise and has less potential to unscrew its back end inadvertently when retracting the nib.
I recently got into the hobby of fountain pens and this was my third purchase, somehow a vendor on Amazon was selling it for 50% off - a mistake I think since 2 days later it was sold at 15% off....and man oh man am I happy with this pen! Your review was very helpful!
Great review! I'm on the fence about the dialog 3 or CC, but like you, I would be very excited to see more color options, especially black trim with the black 14k nibs! I've been on the fence with the dialog in general for many years and never got one. It seems to be very polarizing, but is nice to hear from someone who really seems to like the line, based on your comments and previous videos. I got to admit, the dialog 3 in piano black seems to be the winner for me still, once I change the nib to a black 14k nib. in your dialog 3 video, you tipped the scale for me when you mentioned the lacquer made it easier to grip, which was my complaint when I tried the palladium version when it came out. As for the meaning of 'CC', being that it's shorter, I guessed it meant "Compact Cap-less" or something of the sort...? Thank you for the videos, and commentary! Very much appreciated, and look forward to more!!! ^_^
Hey, thanks for the comment! Honestly when it came to the Dialog in piano black, I tried it with the black and gold nib and it looked kinda off what with it having silver trim everywhere else. I love the white though! I just think for the black nib to work it needs gold or black trim- both of which I’d love to see on a CC. Lamy has indeed confirmed that it’s Compact Capless over on my Instagram!
Enjoyed the review, thank you. Like you, I am a big fan of retractable nib pens and am an owner of multiple dialog 3’s, Lamy’s retractable pens being (imo) the class leaders in this genre. In terms of the CC I must confess some disappointment. It’s not the rose gold plating that concerns me, mine is pristine. But the tool supplied by Lamy to open the cap for cleaning doesn’t work. It screws onto the threads ok but won’t open or close the cap. Maybe because it is the same mechanism used in the dialog 3 nobody tested it (although I can’t believe that). But the manufacturer has acknowledged to dealers that there is a fault and although Lamy is continuing with the pen launch only promises a fix ‘within weeks’. Until then it is a matter of using a coin to open the cap for cleaning. Perhaps that’s not a major fault to some but on a pen that retails for £280 or around E300 it’s not something I would expect, especially from Lamy.
Oh odd! I’ll have to try that out on mine. I did notice that my Dialog 3 barrel did not thread onto my CC grip, so that could be confirmation of what you’re experiencing.
In Australia 🇦🇺 it costs $600 AUD which in my opinion is $100 overpriced so I won’t be getting one until Lamy drop the price by AUD $50-$100. Alternatively, Lamy could release a steel nib entry version for at least $100 less.
Wow, 600 is steep! Maybe look on the used market too, I have seen the standard Dialog 3 sold for about half of retail price. The idea of a steel nib version is interesting but I don’t see Lamy going for it unfortunately.
@@oliveboypens Unfortunately I don’t see any used Dialogue CCs coming onto the market for some time yet. There are 2 Pilots I can think of I’d rather pay that sort of money for ahead of a Dcc.
1. Improved in every way. Idiotically overlooked the chance to move the roll stop to the far end of the barrel. And possibly make it large enough to stop the rolling. 2. Interesting that the new smaller pen is more expensive than the old larger pen. What costs more?
That’s an interesting idea- it could have been interesting to see something like the fin of a Nakaya dorsal fin applied to this pen. I’m not sure what costs more- might have something to do with the supply chain issues that delayed this pen for over a year though!
Having roll stop at this end keeps it in line with nib and gives a visual reference of where the nib will come out facing. If it was on other end and started to drift not sure I would be able to stand it.
Ink is definitely a factor with this pen- if it’s super saturated the less than perfect cap seal will have it dry out quickly. Try an ink that’s not crazy saturated!
Love the CC but not bought one yet. Would like a more muted colour as not a fan of rose gold. Amazing video though. When I am in Paris, lets meet up and talk pens. Where about are you living in the city?
4:52 do you have a preference between the dialog cc and lamy safari with the same gold nib? Also, do you find a difference between the z55 gold nib with the breather hole and imporium nib? I read people saying they prefer the original z55 gold nib with the breather hole because it's softer.
It depends on the day, frankly- the dialog is a lot more fun, but it costs twice as much as a safari with a gold nib- so is it really twice as good? Who’s to say. No notable differences in feel between the Imporium and standard gold nib for me at least. I have both a black and gold and a white/rose gold Imporium nib and they feel the same.
You're bald! Just kidding...I was waiting for your review of this pen given your experience with Lamy in general and Dialog in particular. I am one of those people who would be upset about a flaw in the gold plating - at least for a while, so I'd rather purchase it here in San Francisco at the Lamy Store than online, although that would be cheaper (discounted price and no tax).
They’re matched to each pen in the factory, so if you try to put one pens nib unit into another, it’ll be facing the wrong way. Not sure why they don’t all end up the same direction ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I do not recommend purchasing this pen. It writes smooth and its retractable nib mechanism is incredible, but it is too fragile and it is a bad idea to pay $350 for a product that will be seriously damaged at any moment.

Nice! What color?

Nice pen, nice review.
Thank you!!
Thanks for the review, you're bright and personable. I like the idea of capless but miss a conventional grip too much.
When I saw the CC, I assumed it meant "concealed carry" - smaller, pocket carry, etc.
Lamy actually responded to me on Instagram, saying that it means “Compact Case or Compact Capless”

I wonder what the next Dialog will be

@@JoePesos Good point, it serves a purpose. Maybe a painted indication could do the same thing, but that would ruin the minimalist look.
cappless & compact ı think
Do you know if the feed is friction fit, like on the safari?
Yes, though I don’t recommend pulling it out!
whoaaa aa wait cool lamps?? where can i look at more of those
CC shoul stand for cartridge/converter I guess. Was Dialog 3 a piston?
They are both cartridge/converter pens!
OMG, 100 bottles of ink you have :) by the way that leather pen bags, do they included for the box content?
Yes it does! It’s a nice addition.
mine is not consistent, the ink is very important apparently, it is driving me nuts

@oliveboypens ah I see. Thank you so much for sharing 💖
Wish it compact like pico

why arent nib units swappable

While I haven’t had any issues with any dialogs I have owned, I can’t say I disagree- more moving parts are more chances to break.
