    Lamy could do something better than silly sausage. They made such a cool nib, and nib can be purchased separately, however how come there is no Lamy pen to host that wonderful nib.

    The design is a bit meh. I can't believe this is their most expensive pen. I can get it here at almost the same price as the Dialog CC but I think I'm going with the latter anyway.

      Ink is definitely a factor with this pen- if it’s super saturated the less than perfect cap seal will have it dry out quickly. Try an ink that’s not crazy saturated!

    Good review. Is it possible for the pen to accidentally unscrew itself while capped? Like a good blow causing it to twist open?

    On the blue jewel: the M90 was an anniversary pen. Blue is the Pilot company colour, hence blue. On the writing experience, I think your 701 has issues. It shouldn’t be skipping like that. Mine is smooth, and lays down a consistent line under its own weight. It’s an absolute nail, of course. Same for the black stripes and M90. I actually find the stiff nibs good for long sessions, it’s a matter of personal preference.

    Well done comparison. I own the steel nib Pilot Capless, and I do find scratch markers on the knock button. That being said, my takeaway from this video is that the Curidas is over engineered and underbuilt, the Dialog 3 is over engineered she overbuilt, and the Capless is sort of a good medium between the two. I was not a fan of the fine nib, however. I’d say that medium or broad on the Capless would be better. I’m a Pilot fanboy, but I love the F nib on my Preppy, which is in between a Pilot F and M nib in terms of width, so if the Curidas is anything like this, then I won’t rule out getting one.

    From the metallurgical perspective, 14k gives the optimal combination of Young’s modulus and yield point for pen nibs. The carat wars were one of those sillinesses that corporations indulge in from time to time.

    I A-dore my Curidas EF! Usually, all the EFs I tried always had too much feedback for me. But the Curidas? It glides effortlessly on the paper and is pretty wet for such a thin line! Sure, it’s got juuuust a little tooth when you write fast, but for the most part it’s very smooth! I also don’t really mind the big button, since my fingers are very long and to open my click-action pens, I just… Slam the button on my desk anyway lmao. Nib is awesome, click-action is convenient, size dosen’t bother me, so what’s wrong with mine? The trap. The SMELLY DINGUS trap. First of all, it does not seal. Like at all. I leave it closed for an hour and the pen already rough starts. Like what’s the point of that complicated trap, with the weird hole that you mentionned, just for it to act like it isn’t even there? It drives me nuts, but that’s not even the worst part After just a few days of using it daily at work, I looked at the inside of the little trap and I found a super thin line of… *green ink* that *traversed the trap from top to bottom* It rubs The nib. Friggin’ rubs. So not only does it not seals, it touches the nib when closing, potentially wearing out the tipping material (haven’t had any issues so far) but most of all… Spreading ink all over the nib unit housing inside of the pen! When the nib comes out, the trap rubs against the base of the nib unit (which is normal the nib unit’s gotta get pushed for the nib to be exposed), but with that eenie tiny line, the black plastic picks up the ink from the thin line and, when the nib retracts, *gushes it all over the inner barrel!* And while it does that, the eenie tiny line gets a new supply of ink by touching the retracting nib full of fresh ink! And the cycle repeat until the inner housing is so full of ink that it starts to dry *in* the pen and *borderline gluing the nib unit to the housing, even preventing the button from clicking.* Don’t. Ask. Me. How. I. Know. So every once in a while I have to pass a wet cotton swap through the pen and remove all the dried ink, and trust me it ain’t pretty. All of that because of one tiny dysfunctionnal seal that fails as a seal and as a nib protector! So… Yah, best Extra-Fine I’ve ever tried so far, I don’t mind most of it’s flaws but that door alone prevents me from using it as often as it deserves.

    There's something to be said for posting only when you have something to say. Congrats! A great comparison to reassure me that I chose the correct capless fountain pen. Why should pens have caps at all? This limits the size of my pen collection considerably going forward.

    90% of buying vintage pens to me is only due to cost savings. A well tuned modern nib will be as good or better than vintage nibs so I don't really get the "buy vintage to get a smooth pen out of the box." It's pretty much gambling whether you get that experience. The only thing I know is that most vintage Montblancs write better than lots of new pens for the same price.

    • @oliveboypens
      @oliveboypens 7 місяців тому

      I think (depending on brands, of course) modern nibs can be just as much of a gamble! Look at how much people complain about Visconti, Lamy, or Pelikan nibs coming terrible out of the box. Also, for flex nibs, no modern pen can match what some vintage pens can do. If you buy vintage on eBay, it’s definitely a gamble, but somewhere like a pen show you will get a great pen with better value than a modern one.

      They’re matched to each pen in the factory, so if you try to put one pens nib unit into another, it’ll be facing the wrong way. Not sure why they don’t all end up the same direction ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Oh boy. I just wish I had never seen this. I have been loyal to these pens and inlaid nibs since coveting a targa used by the protagonist in the Peter Greenaway film The Belly of an Architect. In 1987 I was an impressionable architecture student… and found these American pens were so beautifully balanced and a delight to write and draw with. Some 35 plus years and many, many tragic lost, stolen, broken and then commercially unavailable legacy pens later… I find out they were styled on something called a PFM… a Pen for Men. For serious…? F me / curse you internet and your boundless exploration of things.

    Your snapshot of the video with the pen squirting ink reminded me of some old Sheaffer history. The inventor of Skrip ink, Robert Casey, was a chemist who worked for Sheaffer in Fort Madison, Iowa, back in its glory days. He was a rather eccentric man whom our family knew, and he would occasionally have us up for dinner or out on his boat on the Mississippi. He had a room in his house where he worked on his creations, and the walls were splattered with ink from him testing the pens to see how ink dispersed. It's my understanding that whomever bought his house when it was sold painted over these walls, and it seems a part of history was erased.

    Outside the EU, a bottle of Akkerman ink costs only 12.40 euros, with shipping at 20 euros for 1-5 bottles. That's under $19/bottle if you buy five bottles, less than half the U.S. price. If you buy five bottles - 600 ml of ink. Choose well and you need never buy another bottle of ink in your life.
