Many of them, particularly Steve Cropper and Donald Dunn, actually played as session musicians on the original songs the Blues Brothers performed on SNL and in the movie - Steve Cropper played guitar on Soul Man by Sam and Dave, so when people singing into say play it Steve, it's actually him they're referring to.

There were 13 Bluesmobiles which were purchased from the California Highway Patrol. Landis purchased 60 retired Chicago PD cars for $400.00 each. After crash scenes, the damaged cars were taken to a 24-hour repair garage so as to be crashed again. The mall was vacant. It was refurbished and restocked for the film. (The Toys R Us customer that asked if they had a Miss Piggy is a reference to Frank Oz, the voice of Miss Piggy, being the jail official that inventoried and returned Jake's belongings.)
The scene crashing through the Daley Center cost $3.5 million (1979 dollars).

1:01 - Looks like you're watching the extended cut. It's easy to tell from the picture quality which scenes were added back in. It doesn't add anything essential to the film, but it DOES expand upon a few moments that were less clear in the original cut.
1:54 - The first of MANY cameos in this movie. The clerk is Frank Oz, legendary director and Muppeteer.
5:54 - That's Cathleen Freeman. She was EVERYWHERE in the 80s and 90s. And no, she wasn't.
7:20 - Cab Calloway. Legendary big band leader.
8:13 - That IS James Brown. Also, one of the choir women is Chaka Kahn.
9:57 - Given the camera staging, I wouldn't be surprised if they used a double here, but John Belushi could ACTUALLY do flips like that. He did them in the original SNL sketches.
13:50 - The real cost? Next to nothing. This mall was already scheduled for demolition when they filmed the movie.
19:44 - It's worth mentioning at this point that most of the members of the Blues Brothers Band are members of the SNL house band playing fictionalized versions of themselves.
21:45 - That's Paul Reubens, better known as Peewee Herman.
24:03 - John Lee Hooker, Blues LEGEND.
26:06 - Took ya long enough.
28:12 - Ray scared that kid so hard he ran all the way to LA, where he'd get a job driving Bruce Willis to a Christmas party.
    37:29 - It's a speaker from an old air-raid/public alert siren.
38:30 - This is Twiggy, one of the first supermodels. At the time of the movie, she was widely considered one of the most beautiful women in the world.
39:29 - Minnie the Moocher is Cab Calloway's signature song. He was so famous for singing it in his day that Fleischer Studios rotoscoped his performance into a Betty Boop cartoon: ua-cam.com/video/qFhMuFEtIh4/v-deo.html
41:31 - This intro is directly inspired by the introduction to the Blues Brothers first official appearance on SNL: ua-cam.com/video/FTWH1Fdkjow/v-deo.html
52:19- Last great cameo of the movie: a very young Steven Spielberg.

In Chicago, It's Huge. We know every bit of the movie , when , where, who. John Candy, John Belushi, Dan Akroyd, all got their start on the Second City Stage in Chicago. it's one of the reasons they did the film here but honestly this is a Saturday Night Live Skit come to life. The TV show started about 5-6 years before that. There are so many local tropes and inside things in this film from the time. The incomplete Isenhower Expressway Ramp the Nazi's fly off. Making sure to turn the car lights on when going into the underground because of the huge sign that was there. When they have to pull over in the middle of the expressway there was a weird run nobody could figure out why it was designed that way. The Long Elevator ride in the skyscrapers., The PIcaso. They made them jokes in the movie because we were making fun of them in real life at the time.

The thing that makes the movie so great is the facts that 120% of pure love and passion was put into what is really such a silly and simple idea (orphanage needs money and the heroes are gonna get it for them) and yet you’re with them for the whole ride and you root for them to succeed.
Also I’m not really a musical type of guy (like at all) but this is one of many exceptions.

For years back in the 70s, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi played the characters the blues Brothers for Saturday Night Live (they both were in second city, but the blues Brothers has no association with the second city).
No one could have imagine that a reoccurring skit would turn into a hit movie that people are still watching over 40 years later

The dance scene outside of Ray's pawn shop was super difficult to do, cause the scene is supposed to be in the summer but the weather during filming was freezing. If you notice the kids in that scene are all wearing winter clothes. This movie had the most car crashes in it for years until the sequel topped it.

Of course they played on 95 golden platinum hits and won eight Grammys.

1.This was Dan Aykroyd's baby that started out as a SNL skit. He eventually got with Landis (thus Chicago) and it was built on that. There were already songs made for the Blues Brothers from SNL They also put out one album.
    2. All-star cast.🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
    3. Booking officer is Frank Oz. Voiced Yoda, Miss Piggy and other Muppets.
    4. ".....We have a full tank of gas, a half pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses, hit it"
    5. The "Good ol' Boys" haad nothing to bitch about. They were late for their gig.
    6. They smash so many cars that "Smokey and the Bandit" was practice.

In the fall of 1979 and early winter of 1980, the production took over the city of Chicago, its recording studios, several suburbs close to the city, nearby towns like Joliet (the prison there closed in 2002) and a few scenes were shot in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (about 2 hours north of Chicago.) Every available dancer, voice or acting extra in Chicago was excited to be part of the production. Some scenes were shot in California but the majority of the film was filmed in Chicago. Because Belushi was from Chicago and Ackroyd had spent time living there, the movie is filled with in-jokes and references about the city. The Nazi rally is based on a real case of Nazis who wanted to march in the suburb of Skokie, which had a significant population that were Holocaust survivors, and the case went to the US Supreme Court to test “freedom of speech.”

Before the movie it was an SNL skit and then so popular, taken on the road for a 22 date tour. Two live albums were cut from a performance at the Universal Amphitheatre. This band was a genuine tribute to soul and Rhythm & Blues. As funny as the movie is,, the music was the heart & soul.

  • @alancrofoot

As for the cost of the scene driving through the mall, it was all up front. They spent upwards of $40,000 to partially refurbish an abandoned mall. There had been a 'Toy-R-Us' at that spot, they just spruced it up. They brought in all the stuff to stock the storefronts. They also set the record with the destruction of 104 cars, they upped it in the sequel by 1 with 105.
In this film, 64 of them were retired Chicago police cars. The current Guinness world record for 'most cars wrecked in a single film' is 'Transformers-Dark of the Moon' with 562! Damn

Hi Mate, new subscriber here. Love your reaction to the The Blues brothers. I was in my teens when I watched this with my dad and end up been part of my life ever since. The music, comedy and the car chases, its why is a classic movie. They don't make movies or comedy like this anymore. Another movie I grew up with and don't see a lot of reactors cover it is The Cannonball Run from 1981 starring Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr and a young Jackie Chan. I hope you give it a watch.

*Belushi actually did all those back handsprings down the aisle in the church.
