    I found a very good deal for a Kity 636 Jointer/Planer combination on eBay, to replace my current one. It has a wider cutter head (25 cm), a VERY powerful motor and an overall much better build quality.

    That's a great looking machine. I would never have the confidence to drop 400 euro on a secondhand purchase off ebay in case it turned out to be a dud.
    I have the modern equivalent built in china but it still works well. Try not to lift it by the tables though. I made a set of handles for mine with two long wooden 'bars' that were screwed into the main body where the tables attach. You can then do the equivalent lift but without stressing the tables.

    Looking up Kity 636 I found mention of it as a current model in a 1992 issue of American Woodworker. Your machine's styling looks older to me than that, but looks on industrial grade machines aren't a big concern to manufacturers, so don't give that much weight.
    Nice machine, sweet build. Looks sharp.

    weird, I've just bought the exact same Kity 636 combo P/T of ebay. I'm in the process of looking for a 2 pole single phase 2hp motor. The cutter head subs at 7000 rpm, the pulley on the cutter is 50mm therefore you need a 150mmm pulley on the motor.

    • @MariusHornberger
      @MariusHornberger  7 років тому +1

      My motor has 2800rpm and a 120mm pulley. That speed work good. If you can, get a even more powerful motor, you won't regret.

    Hello! The company that made this was bought by Scheppah. I think everyone has seen what "good quality" tools makes this company! Also in Germany another company, Elektra Bekum, that made stuff like this planner was bought by Metabo and the same happend. I dont think you could buy machines like this at hobby level. Now sheet metal and plastic is cheaper , lighter and easier to produce. And also the chinese only have to change the color or the stickers on them.

    Really liked your intro-gag! Nice machine you got there, but now I got a question - Which kind of surface finish did you use on the playwood on top of your cart? I'm watching other woodworker-channels on UA-cam too, but I'm always lost in the aisle in the local shop. As you're also German, I'd like to know wich product you used and if it is compatible with stain?
    Thanks for your time!

    Looks like a great machine Marius, compact enough for a small workshop but obviously higher quality than the consumer stuff.
    What problems did you have with your previous planer? I've been looking at that model, the price is obviously attractive since I don't have a whole lot of use for one but occasionally do jobs where I'd really like one - hand planing large pieces can be a bit of a chore.
    Thanks

      The motor looks a lot like it is actually a re-purposed direct drive table saw motor (note the extra flat construction & how the mounting flange goes away to the side and rear - that's to increase the effective cut depth - and all standard industrial motors have a nameplate). Probably leaning more towards the 4 kW (5 1/2 HP) mark. Very nice setup!

    You will have great times with that machine. They were made in France, most of them were made on the simple idea to use one single motor to power many machines. They were also manufacturing bigger machines with their own motor. I own a 20 yo table saw of this brand (a Kity 619) and a planer/jointer Kity 637. Both a awesome machine very reliable. I bought my saw for 400€ with 6 blades (up to 270/300mm blades just work fine), a rear outfeed table, a side table to rip up to 1000m wide sheets, and a cross cut sled with a 1200mm bar. The planer is quite similar, the tables are 260mm wide, 1200mm long, and can joint up to 250mm. I add a digital scale on it to ease reading the thickness I'm aiming for. Enjoy.

    • @grattetout69
      @grattetout69 7 років тому

      Look on Ebay to fing in UK very low priced jointer blades, I found a pair of 260mm knives for around 20€. A french e shop may also help you to find parts for these old ladies..

  • @markusr3259
    @markusr3259 7 років тому +2

    Last month I bought a version of your old planer... It's powerful enough but the safety pad that came with it sucked. Ended up pushing it through with my hands and chopping the end of my fingertip off. Sad times.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 6 років тому

      Safety should be the primary use when using these machines and not the finished wood. I even use push sticks with the band saw.
      All it takes is one slip and a bad accident can happen. Stay safe.

    If you live somewhere close to France and are able to understand some French you might want to start a search on leboncoin.fr. This is a really popular site in France to sell and buy second hand stuff. And as Kity is of French origin (as postet below) your chances are pretty good to find a 636 there.

    I have the same machine, mine also has a horizontal drill/panel saw and molder that you can activate by changing belts (they are separate machines mounted on a table with only one motor).

    • @MariusHornberger
      @MariusHornberger  7 років тому +2

    • @bartblankers1
      @bartblankers1 7 років тому +1

      It performs pretty well for such small one because it has a 1.5hp motor(3 HP in your case) the downside is that is only has a 15mm (or 16mm I can check that for you) but with the right spacing rings I use molders that need a shaft size up to 30mm. it has a really nice adjusting system for the molder height.one other great feature is
      that is has a slot in the table to use the sled from a table saw, so you can cut counter profiled tenons. If you want to I can take some pictures during the weekend, or if you have any more questions feel free to ask.

    Beautiful work. Well done! Please get some proper push blocks for passing boards over the jointer head. You have a long future in wood working and need your hands intact.

    Ohh! A Kity 636 in Germany?! (fun fact: Kity is now owned by Scheppach)
    Such a lovely machine, it would break my heart if I had to sell mine...
    That motor is huge! :o It must be twice the weight of the 636! lol

    Your “new” planer/jointer appears very much reminiscent of the old-and discontinued-Swiss Inca tools. They were well engineered. There appears to some subtle and not so subtle differences. After some for 40 years I sold the Inca tools and bought a Felder 531 Pro. Excellent combo tool, but there are times that I miss the Inca tools. Well made, light and easy to move around the shop-and the country.

    Hi Marius, your jointer is in a very good shape. I just bought a 636 for 100 EUR (in really bad condition off course and a few missing parts). Could you tell me what the length/dimension of the small belt is, please?

    Thank you for review....I have found similar machine, just a little bit older and I have got a circular saw to...all for 400€....top. If it's not a problem,in what part of Germany you live?

    Your old jointer/planer looked like something out of a Little Tykes toy set, but this newer one looks like a great option if someone is short on space! Good width, too (25 cm = 10")! I think an 8" is the biggest I've seen with a benchtop model before I saw this one! In fact, this is probably as good of a benchtop model as I've seen...most of the other ones I've seen look like buyer's traps: cheap to buy but ultimately a waste of money.

    Really nice & creative job of upgrading and setting it up. I was wondering what the advantages over that previous Chinese machine you had are? I see some: blade width 25cm vs. ~20cm (15?), seems to be you feel the Kity is more powerful...did the Chinese machine struggle with full width boards?, table is a little longer so could keep workpieces from tipping, fence looks somewhat sturdier but you had to fix the squareness, it can plane larger pieces underneath?, gears inside are mostly metal whereas I guess the Chinese one are all plastic? and it has the dual speed if you move the belt on the pulley. But both have aluminum/light tables, both have somewhat similar means (various knobs) of adjusting the configuration. What look like disadvantages to me are the external motor and belt takes space and the motor requires special mounting and looks complex and overall the whole set up is larger and heavier.
    All of that said, was the Chinese machine that much worse? I mean, was the end result ok, a square and smooth piece of wood? Is the difference more in terms of pleasure-to-work-with than the results? What was the main reasons you decided to switch machines?

    Hey the official Kitty motor's only go up to 2 horse power, it feels like more due to it being three phase motor's wich have way more torque, compared to single phase motors. Great Little machine I just bought a combination Table with the 635 included.

    Oh, dear, now there's going to be a run on eBay and elsewhere to find and snap up those old Kity 636 machines. I can kiss goodbye any chance of snagging one cheap. Marius, you should do commercials because now you've made me (and others, no doubt) want to buy one of those.

    I bought an inca machine, similar. The stand is 2x4’s screwed together and it weeble wobbles like crazy. Your stand looks way more solid. I think I’ll copy that.

    Hi there! I got a kity 636 also but the tables are sagging in the middle, maybe due to be carried around by the table ends. Do you know how to setup the tables in order to make them co-planar?
