Actually missed this review, after Leo's MLiD chat I'm here for context and it looks brutal, more than expected from listening, the Zen3 TR Pro with DDR4 stands fairly well using about half the power, which matters in server rooms where overloading the A/C can lead to bad outages.

Great review guys (first one I am seeing on this channel). The main selling point for the new Xeons is the "accelerators". However, you need software support, which isn't there yet. Also, Intel's "cooperation" with ARM will reduce the transistors pitch to 2nm only and less by 2024 (beating TSMC's 4nm). If Intel really delivers, we can expect future Xeons to pack 100's cores while consuming much less per core than the 4th Gen.

I was gobsmacked by the power consumption, but then I wondered: for your viewers, does that really matter? It matters massively in a datacentre, of course, but in an office environment 500W where it won't be running full tilt 24/7 is it really important? And in a home environment, at that price point people cope with 600W GPUs so is a 500W CPU really that much of an issue? Especially here in the UK where it doesn't normally get that hot.

What's interesting is I have a quad socket with 4 e7-8890 v3 that is 18c/32thread per cpu at 2.5ghz base and 3.3ghz boost at 165w per cpu. So for all 4 cpus in total at max draw is 660w. These cpus came out in q2 2015. So I have 72c/144t @ 3.3ghz at 660watt compared to 56c/112t @ 550w. It's crazy that in 8+ years things have shrunk to a smaller package but at the same power if not higher.

I would look for some kind of benchmark for the workload, assumingly that gaming is not the main focus. Even workloads with DaVinci Resolve differ alot, depending on how the application is used. Some calculations may be offloaded to the GPU, changing the system requirements profoundly. There are a variety of accelerator cards like AMD Instinct and nVidia H/A series for specific workloads who do not compromise on precision like the usual gaming cards (FP64), not cheap either, but maybe helping processing the workload faster by a huge amount There are providers like Puget Systems who do benchmarks for applications and assemble hardware optimized for the task, really testing it in-house before choosing suitable components for the customer. I would assume that a GPU for gaming can be added at the end because of the vast PCIe lanes a HEDT platform possesses if another accelerator is already in place.

13:04 tells me all I need to know. At the same level of performance the Intel draws 70% more power (+200W) over the AMD. Never mind the electrical bill, consider the cooling requirements. My TR Pro happily runs on a Noctua air cooler, no need to mess with liquid and it's quite cheaper. And then there's the fact that the Intel requires unusual, expensive DDR5 whereas my half-terabyte of ECC DDR4 cost me less than two grand. I'd love to have a play with this platform. It's almost what I'm looking for. I'm still on X99 and really want something to upgrade to. I have an 8 core. I'm looking for 12 to 16 cores. I am unwilling to give up the 40 PCIE lanes and quad channel memory. I am also unwilling to pay more than around $1500 for the board and CPU as that's already 50% more than the X99 setup ran and at that time Intel was the 'overpriced monopoly' that released a $1700 CPU and was laughed out of the room. WHY are people cheering at HEDT priced consumer parts and AMD starting their almost HEDT CPUs (HEDT shouldn't used registered memory, that's workstation and server stuff) at $1400 and going all the way up to $10000 while still thinking the i7-6950X was overpriced? They're all overpriced, but at least when Intel was the monopoly, the entry point was reasonable and buying 50% or more cores than is currently needed on the consumer platform (4 back then and 8 today) got you HEDT features.

The Threadripper isn't this chip's competition though, Epyc is and they go up to 192 core 384 threads (per socket) using around the power this 56 core Intel chip does. For $1000 more you can get the 96 core 192 thread Epyc 9654 and it only uses 360W. Thumbnail is ever so slightly misleading, you can't overclock away a 40 core deficiency let alone the top tier Epyc's 136 core advantage.

Why did you test the W9 3495X with only 4 channels of RAM? The W9 3495X (and the other 3000-series cpus) supports 8 memory channels. It is the w7-2495X that only supports 4 channels. I am sorry but I can’t take the results of this review as being valid. Not only that but you also only used 64GB. It is important to have at least 2GB per core otherwise you deprive the cores of RAM. Don't take it from me or from Intel, take it from AMD - they were the ones saying it. Please repeat the tests of the W93495X using at least 128GB of RAM ideally in 8 channel configuration (8x16GB). I am sure there will be a significant difference at least in some tests and in any case it will make for a good content.

As mentioned in the unboxing/preview video we were sent the motherboard and two CPUs by Intel and sourced the DDR5 ourselves. (edit: and Intel knew which kit we were using before we started our testing) Cast your eyes around UA-cam for another review of this CPU and you won't find much as the hardware was devilishly tricky to get together. We don't have the Asus W790E-SAGE that supports eight channels of RAM and the only video I can find is at Asus' own HQ so I guess they are thin on the ground. If you do find evidence of one in the wild I would be intrigued to see what kind of memory it runs and at what speed. (second edit: when we requested a RAM kit from Kingston they asked about the CPUs and motherboard and then sent us the kit you see in this video)

good to see big tubes but the breaks are all wrong - right over the cpu - water always leaks out when connecting or disconnecting - vs 96 cores this thing is weak and it uses too much power - amd is much more effcient and for a cpu that is on all the time whell tco goes up and roi goes down - not optimal but maybe why intel sold out to mitac recently

    £10,000 for 56cores and 500w versus £13,000 for 96cores at 360w is not a hard decision.

Me: don't worry auto babua , i can understand your problem , why don't you do one thing , there are some contracts which people take up like washing green luna , peeing on roads , crossing women, going around with green bags , riding on bikes close to women or chakkas, villagers with lungi up , sometimes scratching their d**ks , following them , sometimes abusing also , take up such jobs , they pay around 2rs to 10rs depending upon your experience , I have seen fat uncles earning 10rs , thin uncles with big a$$ 7rs snd very thin 4rs , thin ladies 2.5 rs , kids 0.5rs , handicap 1.5rs , lots of models, there are jobs where you need fix cameras focusing into somebody house and see them day and night , after that you need to whatsapp call some gangs and they would send different models based on the images , for that they get paid 5.5rs per hour , you need to also co ordinate with watchmen residents etc for bathroom stalking , lots of fun, I have seen many participating, heard they will be getting padmavibhushan awards also for that , try that , its a permanent income job , no age limit , no caste limit , even poojari also participate along with dhobhi ji and Muslim ji. I have sent my resume to their head office, I'm sure I will get atleast 0.25 praise job , its quite interesting.

i'm not sure but as you see, it really is, the distribution of current is not dense on a large board which increases the heat dissipation rate resulting in more efficient heat dissipation. Noctua can't pull the cool 13900k 350W because the current density above 13900k is much denser.
