What most people don't know is one of the inspirations to make the movie itself was that one of Rishab Shetty's friends had a gun like that.
The story grew organically from there! And as the story grew, he included many aspects he always wanted to cover in movies, including unintentional Govt vs Tribe clashes, Daivaradhane , Bhoota Kola, Kambhala, and tribal village in general. Its like Gods or Demigods planned all this all along.

Also, Guruva had been performing the Kola where the demiGod descends in him to speak to the villagers. The Landlord tried to bribe Guruva into speaking favourably for him against the villagers. But Guruva states firmly that when he performs, he is entirely taken over by the God and he can’t do anything. Even years after the DemiGod vanishing along with the performer incident, the landlord hasn’t learnt his lesson and doubts the God. He doesn’t believe that the performer gets possessed and hence kills Guruva for not heeding to his demands.

@@DK-wy4wq usually in villages, there is a lot of preparation done for these Bhoota rituals. The performer has to be fast/ not eat non veg for days before ritual, be extremely clean, have no perverse thoughts etc. And during the ritual, firstly the makeup is done, then the performer warms up, the ancestral story of the demiGod is read, some prayers are done, then the possession of the performer by the demiGod happens. It does not happen just like that unless the God wishes to enter someone. All these are beliefs of villagers, it’s true for those who believe, for those who don’t, it may be irrelevant. Hence, Guruva as a person is just a mortal human being who was used as a vessel receiving God during the rituals. What happened to him was his fate.

There's a caste angle to this...where the landlord doesn't enter the lower caste houses, which is why it was a big deal that he entered their house at the funeral. And Shiva entering the landlord's house was an act of rebellion too. Before, the lower castes only sat at the foot of the table but Shiva pulled a chair and sat at the table with him.

Upon discussion with the landlord Shiva decided that he and his friends would cause too much trouble in the forests without being caught so that the forest officer will fall in trouble with his superiors and be transferred. Cutting down the tree in the dark was part of that plan. But it backfired as the FO unexpectedly came into the forest at the exact time the tree almost fell on him. Shiva had no intention to physically harm the FO, he just wanted him driven away so that their forest and livelihood won’t be troubled by the Government officials in the name of encroachment.

Only once things got out of hand did he put shiva in jail.

The tree cutting, was to simply do an illegal activity in the forest, and bring it down. Shiva was basically plotting to make the officer look guilty of not doing his job...to get him fired ultimately. Of course, that went down more seriously than expected. It was a clear coincidence. Shiva and the landlord discussed this when the landlord went to have his 'affair'. You guys need to pay more attention 😄

A lot is getting lost in translation, naturally. The language, cultural nuances, even the satirical comedy is not understood by even Indians outside of the region(coastal Karnataka). But I think you are appreciative of the cinema nonetheless. Cheers.

When would people learn to appreciate something without putting down another is something I wonder always. Bollywood as well as different regional cinema, not just south, have been giving many wonderful movies forever. Some industries made more money at one point, now some other industry may be making, and like the south directors himself said, who knows the next big hit would be from Assam or Orissa. There are so many good hindi movies that were interesting and refreshing in last 2-3 months itself- uunchai, bhediya, An action hero, that while not making as much money did have really good content. But people unfortunately feel the need to have such a negative attitude towards Hindi cinema to hail south. As much as I love watching many south movies, now certain people (not the industry) have made it like some toxic game. It's annoying to say the least.

People want to feel superior to others when they put down different beliefs/faiths/community/culture. In doing so they confirm their own f'ed up beliefs that what they follow/like/praise/revere is the only best thing to do so and consequently they feel they are above others who don't share the same ideology.

You miss the point at 5:49, Shiva was not planning to kill the officer by felling the tree on him. He wanted to cut a big tree so that the officer looses his job for not being effective in his job. You can hear him saying if this plan does not work lets do something bigger by killing the animals in the forest so that the officer will be sacked for not being able to control poaching. But unfortunately at the same time the officer comes in the same path.

Since shiva had no interest, Guruva (shiva's cousin) was performing as the demigod in the kola. Remember the scene where Shiva's mother was telling shiva that ideally the Kola shd be performed by him and nt his younger brother. Also the landlord had said in one scene during the same time that Guruva is doing well, bt there was something special about how their father used to do. So since Guruva died, it was his vision that Shiva saw as demigod in the prison. (Usually he used to see his father)

Gun backfired because it was not officer's gun. That gun was rampa's grandfather's gun. Rampa is shiva's aide. Rampa narrates a funny story of this gun when they go hunting. It's a malfunctioning gun which back fires always and only he knows how to use it. You can see how he uses the same gun in climax.
In that scene officer takes shiva's gun without realising and fires it as normal gun

The reason he didn't shoot down or capture shiva is that, in tribal land law enforcement is cautious because they are not just against one person but the whole tribe. And they don't have anywhere to run but tribals can disappear in forest and can survive till everyone's forgotten about anything.

In India, officers aren't militarized. They don't all have standard issue body armour and firearms. Many are just wearing their uniforms and a baton. If you encounter a situation where you might piss off an entire village where people possess firearms, your one CO with a handgun isn't going to be able to win. The best approach is de-escalation.
