@@kcindc5539 - Correct. They also had other hits like the million-selling "Stick Up", or top 40 singles like "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show" and "The Day I Found Myself". I loved them when I was a kid.
@ oh yeah, thanks for reminding me!! Loved them. I was (and still am) a 60’s and 70’s AM junkie. The first two songs I committed to memory when I first heard them on the radio (around 1970 and 1971) were Band of Gold by the queen Freda Payne, and Brother Louie by Stories which for decades I firmly believed was a black R&B group.
@@kcindc5539 - "Brother Louie" by the Stories came to us in 1973. I bought that record the first time I heard it. Hard to believe it only reached #22 on the soul chart.
I loved Mama Cass. I thought she had soul, from the way she moved to the music with The Mamas & The Papas. It wasn't until I was an adult that I found out she was from my hometown of Baltimore.
If you read the books that Chuck Barris wrote over the years, at least one of them has a little more, um, intimate detail about the relationship that Chuck and Mama Cass had.
I loved the music segments. I even loved the Honeycone and the video graphics. But I hated the skits that Martin Landau and Barbara Bain were in. They added nothing to the show. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the great rapport between Cass and Buddy Hackett. The sketches they were in were sweet, especially the hospital sketch.
This TV special was not what I was expecting to see. This show was not worthy of this talented wonderful singer. She hardly had any time to sing with all of the boring guests taking up practically all of the time. However, she finally did get to sing one very beautiful song all alone 'I Can Dream, Can't I". Why wasn't she allowed to do more? She appears to be only another guest and not starring in her own TV special!
That "brown haired man" is the GREAT John Sebastian of The Lovin' Spoonful. A VERY POPULAR & influential group of the '60s. UA-cam Link: ua-cam.com/video/AN2FyAoS4Ww/v-deo.html Best regards from Yucatan Mexico, Ben
Shame that sound and image get out of synch for the last part. Was pleasantly suprised by the chimestry between Hackett and Cass, standout number was the girls trio doing I shall be released, digged that Mamma was singing along during Joni's song. This said, the show belonged to its era , and besides a few highlites has not aged that well.
I know this became a special but it sure looks like a pilot for a tv series. Too much work put into it thinking it was just for a special. She was so talented and died way too soon.
With love from the 1960's Finland Mama Cass 🇫🇮🙏🙏🙏🙂❤️
I loved her voice and it ended way too early💔
Wow. Ladies of the canyon. What a treasure of talent.
WHY WASN'T THIS PICKED UP?!?!? IT'S MARVELOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The uncredited backup singers for Mama Cass is the amazing group Honey Cone. Just a little over a year from hitting the big time.
@@shyman99 they had a hit with “Want Ads” IIRC. I thought they sounded familiar!

R.i.p..cass peace& ❤😢🎉
I love it❤
What an all star cast…I mean what amazing friends❤❤❤
Taped in December, 1968 and broadcast on ABC-TV Thursday, June 26th, 1969.
Thank you!!!
Oh my, they taped it on my 21st birthday, practically!!
Just a few days after the sad passing of Judy Garland at 47.
Mama Cass could belt out a standard like no other!!!
In 1969, I had a crush on Cass. I had just turned 19 when this show aired." I can dream, can't I" My favorite.
Thank you so much. I never knew this existed.
Can't believe she's been gone FIFTY years ago.
I totally dig the Mamas And The Papas medley (45:04). She gave those songs a little touch of soul.
So glad Owen has this.
SLEEP WELL MAMA CASS AND SWEET DREAMS . . .
That opening outfit sold plenty of color TVs.
Mary Travers When I Die is so good.
Shown June 1969, just a few days after the sad passing of Judy Garland and Robert Taylor.
de verdad gracias por este increíble tesoro audiovisual que acabo de ver, que ganas de seguir viendo mas de Cass Elliot

Is that a young Bernadette Peters in the Playtex commercial?
Gosh, Bernadette Peters in a bra commercial at 25:40-priceless and hilarious.

No auto-tune, no twerking, no cheap overt degradation, no desperate use of vulgarity….. just talent and experience on display as it should be.
The right culture.
@ absolutely
I shudder to think of her hosting 'the view'

Well, there's no pleasing everyone.
It was a Chuck Barris Production, so... there's that.
I love that all those who sang 'Mieskeit' were Jewish!!!
Was that the couple from Space 1999 ? @ 29:30 mark
Who is the brown haired man she did a duet with?
Buddy Hackett

Jim Gordon drums
Have you read his recent biography?
@@tinydancer62 The Joel Selvin? How is it?

What tv network was this showed on?

You clearly see the ABC logo at some point.

Failed variety show tv pilot on abc
Which is why it was called a "program" and not a special.
Adele before adele
Buddy Hackett? Really?
Hamfat?
What, you’ve never heard of Hamfat? 🤪
