thats wat the generator should actually be used for i think. to get something from ur head so u can see wat needs to be tweaked. though not everyone can/will be able to do it but still
When you start out, and are still in the faze of referencing and heavily referencing, it can help you get a basic idea of what you want. It is also very helpful as a guide for anatomy when making your own poses and drawings.
Well pencil and paper are absolutely always viable options ;o, however if you wish to show your character online, that can become much more difficult ;p
I've had people send me references of their pony OCs made with the pony generator, and that's fantastically fine, however, selling characters made in the generator isn't just wrong; it's stealing. The artwork created in the pony generator is artwork previously created by, GeneralZoi, and by selling the ponies, you are making a profit off of GeneralZoi's artwork. The artist even says on their deviant art page "Yes, you can make free adoptables. Adoptables may not be sold for money or dA points." I actually recently used a generator program to help me flex my creative juices. I used PidgePudge's Create a Griffin and played around with the markings to help me get inspiration in the redesigns of my old griffin character. Granted, my character ended up looking nothing like the one in the generator, but I'm still going to post a link in the description of my character sheet when I finish it and upload it. It was tons of fun to sit there and flip through marking ideas I had never even thought of before, and hey, if I link it, not only will it share the artist's work, but it may help someone the way it helped me! I feel like that's the way pony generator, and really all generators, should be used. Use them as a method of thumb-nailing ideas you can't quite draw right then and there, and use those ideas later to create a character the generator just can't make with what it has.
Btw, I've been listening to your videos while working on artwork, because I like to listen to people talk while I work. I've enjoyed most of your episodes so far, so I think I'm going to subscribe. You post lots of very useful information about character creation that I really feel people can benefit from whether they are making pony characters or any other type of character. You even made me question whether or not some of my own characters were well created, and really, there's nothing wrong with that. It just means it might be time to revisit the very old ones! ;)
It's more complicated than that, op. The assets are Zoi's, but neither Hasbro IP nor end-user OC are. The honor system should be pretty obvious here for both program and user.
Bruna craftGM that is a great way to get a idea of what you want you oc to look like. Yet if you use it for actual scenes for your art is just lazy and unoriginal
lels I like playing with any "create your character" game x'D I feel like my personal standpoint, these kind of things may give you ideas explore different styles. But what do I know >.>...
1. That had nothing to do with anything 2. There are stupid questions. "What is 1 + 1?" "Are you alive?" "Am I dead?" "Do I have a heart?" "John Will Smith from the second grade." "Are you a person?"
i don't like the pony generator. my OC is a darconaqquis and since the generator cant make anything other than ponies i find it sets a boundary to your creativity
+Tyandaga Yay ^^ And great video as always Tyan, I used the generator to design my oc originally and recently one for my mum, and I don't use it that often as I used it to get the basics of creating a pony oc ^^ Can't wait to get started on my collab with you in terms of scripting ^^
+Tyandaga Well, I used the pony generator a few times to have a picture of some of my OCs (btw, my profile picture still is one of these, though it is a rather old and outdated one which i need to replace), so if i would find someone who wanted to draw it, i could show this person the picture i made so they have an idea (or i-deer) of what my OC looks like.
I used the pony generator for the first draft of my OC. I actually used it fr several OCs, and decided that I couldn't get the image I wanted. So, I picked up a pencil and taught myself to draw. Then, I saved up for a tablet. Now that I have one, I'm able to draw what I want, and my OC is now completely different to what I originally created on the generator.
My favorite use for the pony generator is a game I play with my friends. Go to pony generator. Click the randomize feature. Then each of your friends playing the game will draw their version of the random OC, (with the ability to make small alterations, such as height, thinning or thickening of features, adding clothing, etc) and at the end of the round, you vote on who drew the best version. Rinse and repeat until someone reaches 5 points.
I tried the pony generator once and I had the character thought out in my head but I felt that the pony generator limited my design and I could barely make it look alike to my character.
I respectfully disagree. While using pencil and paper is fine if that's what you want, and I have done a few pencil and paper drawings myself and uploaded them to deviantart, the problem with pencil and paper drawings if you have to scan them in and if you don't have a scanner or have a poor quality one they can come out looking pretty crappy. Plus, scans of images drawn irl unfortunately can't really match the quality of digitally created art. Not to say that the physical drawing isn't as good as the digital one, some physical drawings are even better, actually. But when compared to a scan or photo of the physical drawing (which is the only way to get it online to share with others) the two cannot compare.
I used it for the first version of my OC, when I was sort o getting into the fandom. However, I MUCH prefer the pictures of him I got from awesome artists I know :D. They really make him look much better, more ORIGINAL, and make awesome references for him. A proper picture of your OC will make you A LOT happier than just a factory made 2D pony you would get from generators like that. Since you're character is unique and special in their own ways, it's only fitting to give them a unique and special reference for them. My OC also mainly uses two costumes: A traditional detective one for any detective work and a unique magician one for his main job and passion, being an awesome entertainer with different illusionary spells. The pony generator simply couldn't give them the same style and look that a proper picture would give them, so I eventually got around to getting proper pictures of them. I even changed the original design to one I'm more pleased with. While it can be a great starting tool for new members to the fandom who aren't good at drawing ponies, it SHOULDN'T be used as your main reference for your OCs. Selling generated ponies is flat out WRONG! The creator of the generator isn't profiting off it, Hasbro isn't profiting of it, the hard working artists aren't profiting off it, just some guy coning others out of money!
I first created my OC in the generator and even created several poses with it when I first started making UA-cam videos. Though the poses felt stiff sometimes, they did their job. A while ago, I hand drew poses for my OC (and later made them digital) and she now feels much more expressive and fluid. The OC Creator definitely has its perks like testing colors and general ideas, but it's always a good idea to move past it as well :)
I have used the generator before! Although when I started drawing ponies I drew and came up with them myself, I would occasionally use the generator for fun. I eventually got bored of it and have never used it since. I've improved greatly in my art style and while I do have much to learn I'm pretty satisfied with where I stand and only know I can continue to grow! ^^
Hey! Is it ok to use the generator to have the idea when making an oc? Like, you make a pony in the generator, then you redraw it in your own style while changing a bit stuff like the hairstyle Etc, and then post it online (not the pony in the generator style, the one that you made) Is it ok to use it that way?
I used the pony generator to toy around with colors and to quickly show my friends the basic ideas of my OC. I started with a red and yellow Rainbowdash mane and tail, and orange fur. I added wings and a bright orange bow. This is meant to represent fire. I smoothed out the mane and tail, but kept it unkempt as a filly and when powered up.

The pony generator gets far too much hate for the stupidest reasons. One of the biggest points you made in this video (people selling pony generated art) is not a fault of the pony generator itself, rather, the people using, so it's a mute point. Your first point about the pony generator being bad (doesn't help one improve as an artist) is also an awful argument. I would state all of the reasons, but your section on the good things about the pony generator (not everyone has the ability to make/obtain custom art) nearly completely counters this, so that's less work for me. The only thing missing from this, is that most people can use a pen and paper, and I do concede that, I have no valid counter argument for that. (Because I'm using the UA-cam app, I can't comment much longer than this, so I'll finish my thoughts in a reply to this)
I'm also kind of against people making videos on why the pony generator "sucks", because more often than not, it seems like the video is shaming people who use the pony generator, even if they have valid reasoning for this. Fortunately, you didn't fall into this as hard as Mad Munchkin and Lightning Bliss did, but it's still there. Now, because I'm the type of person that is against people saying something is wrong, but not offering any solutions, here's my own two cents on how this video could have been a little better: 1: make sure the points you make actually apply to the thing you're criticizing. 2: be up front about how the pony generator is not a bad thing, and how your opinion on the matter shouldn't stop someone from using the pony generator. 3: try to be a little less monotone. (I ran out of room again...)
+MOOSEWHISKER 4: try to make sure that two different points you make don't contradict one another 5: before making a point, play devils advocate, both in the process of writing the script, and in the script itself, it makes the video more entertaining, and can strengthen your point, as well as weed out shallow and contradictory points. ...And that's about it! I hope that you can take to heart at least something that I said in this rant, and can improve your content for the future!
The Pony Generator got me on my feet. Using it as a base for my own character and design, and then tracing over the different poses helped me learn how to draw ponies and eventually horses. And since then my own OC (though still rather simple at heart) has gotten a more complex image. It does annoy me that people sell designs they thought up and people actually do buy them, but I have no hate towards the Generator itself. If anything, I'm very thankful.
I played with the generator a lot when it first came out since it was something new and I wanted to see what my story characters would look like as horses. Over time I reached a limit you mentioned where it simply couldn't keep up with my imagination. I go back to it every so often when I want to see one of my characters as a pony but that is fairly rare. I've been doing it a bit more lately since I started planning an MLP fanfic. I find having a basic visual idea what the characters might look like helps plan out reactions and conversations other characters might have. I say basic since the generator has a serious limit when it comes to making bat ponies and none of the manes quite fit.
I used the Pony Generator, but only to have fun. Sometimes i just make a random pony in the generator, get inspired by it and make a good character. :3
i used the pony generator as a base to trace in meta ( for my bertus model xD ) i use the hair style/ colors to sorta find what i want and refined it for the model itself ( changed the hair multiple times ) the pony generator is a good tool if your starting out and you need a reference for a character or a base for said character don't use the pony creator to make the char in full as you said tyandaga using it to show the person who is drawing it for you what you want is good take the character straight out of the generator without edits or a actual drawing/ plush/ model its bad
There's a community on a social media called VK.com, but I guess you can found something similar on facebook or twitter too. So these communities are called "Pony creator stories", people here create web stories(?) using pony creator, and some can be really interesting, there's also some artwork made with a use of PC poses as a reference.
My issue with the pony generator is that it has only a few reasonable pony parts and tons of weird ones, meaning attempts to make your character different will very quickly turn them into weird sparkledogs that you'd never see in the show itself.
I created a bunch of OCs with pony generator and pony generator v3. They're good for inspiration for your character's base design. But please be realistic in your character's design. And by "realistic", I mean "Don't go over the top." Alicorns are understandable if kept realistic without looking like mary/gary sues. But a dragon eyed, bat winged unicorn with antlers and a messy splash of rainbow vomit isn't going to make the cut. Remember that the generator is for inspiration and making rough drafts ONLY. It's not for final pieces. Keep your character simple and realistic, but don't be afraid to bend a few rules here and there. Just don't do it everywhere. I created 3 alicorns, 2 unicorns, and 1 earth pony. None of them look over the top. And they would be more realistic if I had the software to evolve them from their base designs. Because the generator contains recycled/reworked hairstyles and tails. For one of my characters, I like her hair but dislike the pattern for the hairstyle's secondary colour, because it looks unrealistic. Once I learn how to use proper software, I can tweak her appearence so that she can look better. And then comes the names, personalities, and cutie marks. But those are for different videos.
I drew my very first OC and then my friend told me about Pony Generator. I was so excited until I saw I had a totally different pattern and mane and accessories than what it offered, so I opted to use it ONLY for poses and I improved my style, while my friend didn't improve until years later after my prompting.
The Generator is good for making rough drafts of characters that keep popping in your head. It's not for final pieces. The posed are extremely limited, there's no sense of 3D rotation besides the head (which in in the v3 version), and there are only so many hair options. What if a newer version came out that let you customise the front, sides and back of your head hair: Examples of these would be position, shapes, texture, length, and size. For example: Do you want hair sides to be straight, wavy, curly, swirly, or slightly curved? Do you want the end of your hair to be straight cut, or pointed whilst curving? What angle do they curve or cut at? And if there's secondary & tertiary colour options for the hair, YOU can customise how the hair's colour pattern works to fit your character. And then an update to poses, where we can rotate things besides the head and joints. I want my OC to be viewed from a 3-quarter view like the ponies at 0:43 in the video, and then move the legs to suit that character's pose. I don't have the software, but I'm sure that someone's making a newer version of the pony generator. the V3 version has removed the feature to add a cutie mark. which is unfortunate.
The selling them thing is a little hard to work around. On the one hand, you're selling someone else's art. The creator drew all that stuff. They own it. You can't sell other's stuff. On the other hand, you're not technically selling that art, but the design of the character, which belongs to you...It's a grey area.
Tyandaga I guess some people just suck at design. I dunno. It's like, have you every looked at something you loved and wondered "Why have I never thought about this before?" It's kinda like that. You're more selling the idea, than the thing itself.
the pony generator is best use for people who haven't the right tings to draw but that doesn't mean they can submit and be proud of what they made with the generator because they didn't make it the generator did
I think they can be proud of the character's personality and just submit the pony creator pic as supplementary material to their description. As long as they're not trying to sell the picture itself or pass off the pony creator pic as art. It's just an idea, but you're allowed to be proud of an idea. Ideas can be really cool.
I don't use the generator as a substitute for art. I use it as a place to start, but then I can't get any further because I don't have the materials needed. I can either draw it on paper and keep it mostly to myself because I don't have any good ways to share it, or try and make a digital drawing that would probably look 10 times worse than the generator. And I do have a dA page, but when I draw something on paper and try to upload it... it never goes well. You can't see the lines well, even if they're drawn in ink, any and all colors are desaturated or take on a blue/yellow tint from the lighting, and depending on the size of the picture, I may have to take pictures of it in parts and 'sow' them together, which is guaranteed to look terrible. I don't have access to scanner, nor the resources to get one. So yeah. The generator is the best way for me to share my ideas for pony characters.
I tried using the pony creator to see how close it came to my OC, It came nowhere close. She is so unique some people that drew pictures of my OC (which I mean by they drew my OC as an art trade or request) got some of her features wrong (but I don't mind) I know the problems of generators (because I had an OC whose name was made by a generator) and they have no Creativity. I think its best off to try very hard, with only help from others (not generators, but only if you have no inspiration) and you'll be very proud what happens next Tyandaga you are awesome, you helped me shape my OC ALOT! Thank you :3
I don’t know how well I’ll draw but I want to try. I got the mlp drawing book from the library to try and help me. The creator image is how I see Gale a wind but it’s missing stuff like goggles. Im wondering if the app is a bit more limited than the website. And the Doll Divine one died with Flash. The 3d one is cool but tough to use if you don’t know much about manipulating your character pose.
Its terrible! I used it but then I got bored of thoose dumb hair styles! Me is an artist me self so I do know that for some people is usefull! But I dont recommend it!
Well that was kind of offensive. Pony creator is all I have. All I can use. I can’t speedpaint like others can. I don’t have the app I don’t have the software. Pony creator is all I can use.
Why can't I play it?! When ever I press the link, it does take me there, but then just shows me a picture of it! There's no play button! SOME ONE PLEASE REPLY, AND TELL ME HOW!
I have used it a few times but the limitations frustrated me so much that I decided to learn how to draw my own ponies the hard way, just to get them the way I wanted them. Especially since I was never really a massive fan of the MLP: FiM-artstyle in the first place. Now I don't hate it or anything, I just felt that it was too simplistic for my tastes.
My Oc is made with Pony Generator and I love it BUT i'm scared to show it because well IT'S MADE WITH THE GENERATOR...i'm afraid people will call me lazy or stupid but i'm not I just can't draw ponys and i don't have the software... What do i do??
*WildPaws* Don't just show off a screenshot of the character from the generator unless you're giving a reference to an artist as a commission. If you want to show it off online, you can just draw it yourself, there are plenty of guides on UA-cam on how to draw ponies, and if you don't have any you can always just pick up a box of colored pencils and paper from staples, it's not exactly going to cost an arm and a leg. This goes double if you were going to post it on a picture sharing site like DeviantArt, where there's a stigma against character generators.
And what about (not myself) individuals with only one hand, or shaking hands due to some physical ailment that prevents them from having a steady hand to draw with who have no extra money with which to shell out for a piece of artwork, but are capable of typing out (or using the programs that type for them from their words) to tell a tale or an in depth biography/profile of their OC? I can't see that as being lazy when they're physically incapable of drawing and have no means to pay for anything but their food, shelter, clothing and other bills. What of the autistic individuals? Sure some are high functioning, but not all. I wish people would stop shaming others for wanting to show their ideas (as long as they credit the truth).
I've seen somebody on deviantArt selling them for about 100points each as there was a "reference" sheet (They used the generator to do different poses and such). You're literally just scamming people when you do that. Especially when somebody puts hours into something that they sell for 100points too!
Not only does it cost a lot for all the equipment but also it takes a lot of time to build the skills to draw a respectable image which many aren't willing to take the time to do. I know a lot of people, like myself, who create an image and become discouraged because what they can draw doesn't live up to their imagination. But I do agree that the generators outcome shouldnt be viewed as art and definitely shouldnt be sold but it does give those without any drawing skills a way to show their OC. It may be a lazy way out but it is helpful.
Great video! I always look at other peoples art and think they're so much better than me. When I watch your videos I know I'm improving. I love your art! Keep up the great work
I've used the generator myself a few times, mostly for entertainment purposes. I've never actually posted online any of the ponies I made with it. I'm shocked to hear that people have the gall to make ponies in the generator and then SELL THEM. I'm also shocked, like you, that anybody would bother paying for it. However, if I had to choose a side, I'd say I lean more in favor of the pony generator. That's just me though, I'm a writer not an artist, so I'm very grateful for this maker that can let me kinda bring my mlp OCs to life despite the fact that I do not own the equipment to make my own. Nor do I possess artistic ability to make my own OCs, and I do not have the motivation or patience to improve. So for budding artists I would say to use the pony generator only as a template if at all, and to continue drawing their OC and improving. For those of us though who just want to make mlp OCs for fun or for stories (say we post a fanfic on deviantart and want an image to show what our main character(s) look like) I think it's fine and even great to use. That's my two cents.
I honestly adore getting references from the pony generator, because the reaction when a commissioner sees how well the character they made looks when done in a different style or at a different angle is great! I even use the pony generator to try out different hairstyles and color palettes. But I'm with you I honestly just think, like ALOT of doll/generator sites and programs that it's been done to death. Not to mention there are a TON of "mary sue" type OC's that have come out of the generator that have also given it a negative connotation.
I can't draw free hand but I don't even fell like using a base is my own original character so how can the pony generator be original? I'm branching out from bases and starting to draw but I'm not very good tho could u give me some tips maybe
I used it to work out the general image of my OC, as I am better at writing than drawing. I can use the character I made as a base, and change it as I need to. I think it's really good as something to work from, either as an artist, a writer, or any other medium.
Well one time I used pony generator. But I used it mostly to kind of have an idea how will my character look. I am planning soon to try and draw it myself (I never drew a pony)
I will admit that I was one of those fans who first used a pony generator to construct my OC, and even used poses from the pony generator for one of my first videos. But since then I’ve been learning how to construct my own character, drawing all the pieces from scratch. I’ve envelopes found a style that works for me, but still fits within the MLP universe. I’ve never stopped making small improvements to my artwork and continue to do so. I now mostly use Adobe Illustrator CS6, as my primary art program, but at times go into Photoshop if I want to do textures.
I have used it, but have moved away from it. I even drew a character that I hadn't been intending to draw and have given it a name and am, honestly, still working on a cutie mark for
Dear Tyanganda this video was really helpful to me thank you! Of course I myself use the pony generator as a base for comics but after a while I just lost interest in making them. I must say I love your videos and I agree making a pony oc off of the generator is absolutely terrible. There is nothing I hate more than finding ocs made with the generator on the internet
I can see where some people are coming from when they don't like the Generator, But It helped me see a bunch of diffrent ways I can improve MY OC. Not A MLP OC in general, but Just like different qualities that I could give them that I couldn't with the generator! By The Way, How do you put Tyandaga on screen In your videos?????? I've looked it up, and I can't find a way to do that. Could one of your videos be how to get the right software to do that or something Please???
I use the generator sometimes when my friend asks for an idea for an oc, then draw a few of them that matches its name. Is that considered lazy...? And also.... if I ever sold it I would draw it myself. Is that still considered "Evil" like Sombra?
I actually am quite fond of the Generator. I agree that it should not be depended upon, but when you first start with the looks of a character, the Generator is a good place to go. While rather limited, you can still get a good idea of what it would look like, to use as a partial reference. However, should I make such videos, I would likely have a hand-drawn (Or mouse-drawn ;P) character to use as you use your reindeer OC here. I would recommend it to people who have trouble drawing, or even people who are good at it, just to have something to build off of.
Tbh now that Flash is gone, I miss the pony generator. I found it a great way to get a starting point on a character. Two of my main ponies came from the pony generator. Without the original picture from it you wouldn't realize either of them were made using it. I found it a great way to plan out hairstyles and colors I wanted to use without having to make a full art piece. I would be able to head to it and get a base design and then tweak and finalize their design after. Saves a lot of time and headaches when you don't have to keep scraping a design because you don't know where to start and can't get a good grasp on it. I do agree it's a horrible thing to use solely on it's own but it was an amazing planning tool, same with the 3D maker which is still up and running (I've resorted to that one now since flash went) So in conclusion, it's a great tool for planning and posing but not an art saver.
I might be veeery late to the matter, but regardless want to share my thought, I came to the fandom just around may 2016, and when I decided to ponify myself I had no basis, so when I heard of the generator I openly used. But again, for basis. What came out was close of what I wanted, and up to now I'm putting my mind on it. THAT, is how I believe the Generator should be used.
I'm no pro in drawing with tech, but I can draw at a pretty decent level on paper. What I do is I search up how to draw something, draw it on paper first, take a pic, then trace it out on a drawing app. After that, I colour it digitally. I'm no pro and there's a few missing details (which are actually a bit important), but that's the gist of it. Hope this helps someone..
I do the same, I always like sketching on paper and then refining it digitally. One of the advantages of drawing digitally is that it is much easier to draw tiny details and that you won't have to deal with any residue if you want to erase something (especially when it comes to coloring) on top of the ability to use any colorshade under the sun. As for tips, I would advise to not get obsessed with the details. Start out by trying to get the hang of the shapes that makes up the pony first, or thinking in lines and circles as I like to put it. I might put up an art-tutorial one day but I don't really have the time right now.
When I first started I used the generator mostly as a fun little thing to create random designs. But it became incredibly helpful when I tried to create a pony based off myself, which ultimately became Auria (redesigned from the basic generated idea).
My suggestion is that make a base oc in the generator and then redraw it on paper bc ur style will oubviously be different from the generator and if ur limited within the generator for somthing and u wanna change it, change it on paper its like the best way to create an oc and I've been using the method for over a year now
Actually for my Earth Pony, Wolfbane and Unicorn Almanac. I used this exact program, to experiment with colors, to get the proper schemes that would seem suitable before I ever got to drawing the pieces. As stated in the video, it really does limit the imagination and experimentation. If I completely relied on it, I wouldn't have never thought of having my Earth Pony to have a Shoulder cutie mark as a story idea, thus brave myself to alter anatomy in such a way he uniquely stands out. So while I will give my appropriation for Pony Creator for setting the foundation/frame work for my ideas, I cannot say they built my 'entire' work.
I think that Pony Creator is a great method for sort of realizing your vision and ideas, like a doodle. Without it, I wouldn't really "know" how my OC (the lovechild of Twilight and Pinkie Pie, don't judge) looked, or how I could make it more personal. Now I have built more on that first draft and started to draw the character on paper, even incorporating it into the real world. I'm not very good at just creating something myself from thin air, so I really need references such as Pony Creator to be able to realize my vision :)
i used the generator and i think it's a fabulous idea to use it if you're having difficulty coming up with character designs. I have my darling OC Vanilla Midnight that I'm still working on, but i never would've gotten as much progress done on her as i do now without the generator. You should't depend on it or use it as a crutch. It should be used as a tool to help you or a springboard to propel you forward.
I think Pony Generator made by General Zoi is great and I've used it before. I used an old version to make mine and I was not only pretty happy, it came out with a design that I think fit perfect for my OC. Not only that, the design I used doesn't exist any more with any generation, so it became a rare design. I went on to draw my own interpretation of it and had a couple commission pieces. I might get more, but I like to do it myself. I'll soon get started on making a porcelain sculpture and hopefully get a plushie done someday. Without the generator I probably wouldn't have made my own OC, it was a good guide, but I eventually designed it on my own and biased it on the original.
Hey Tyandaga I used it once before but it reply didn't fit because I like making my own creations from scratch but I look at tutorials and it's hard to draw it and I dont have a computer anymore (it doesn't work on tablets) so I can't use pony generator. What do I do?
Pony gen is decent for checking colors against each other... that's about it. I strongly advise bases if people have trouble with drawing. It's a decent in-between. While it does severely limit you if you have no wish to draw at all, if you do choose to branch out some, it allows you a safety net on bodies and poses, while allowing you to explore manes, tails, accessories and cutiemarks. And yes, that is hard when starting out, but it is a great starting point! Just be sure to ween yourself off of the bases and start making your own bodies eventually.
I did use it cause I lack any artistic talent when it comes to drawing. Honestly? It wasn't so bad, but I wish I could go back and change the cutie mark and you're right. It is very limited.
pony creator is actually what helped inspire me to start drawing. i came up with an OC that I couldn't create on Pony creator so I learned how to draw ponies and realized that there were other things and OCs that I wanted to create too :3
I originally used the generator to flush out an idea of what I had for my characters, as well as a way to give me ideas for OC's (Mind you I was fairly new to drawing horses + making OCs) so this is was the perfect thing for me at the time. I can see the generator used for things like this a lot, it can be used to get the creative juices flowing and moving so that you can figure out what you really want in the end. Now mind you I'm not saying that you should use it entirely, it's a great way to start, but you shouldn't continue to use it because it can stagger your creative process and growth due to the limited options that the generator has. Yes it has some horn styles and wings and such. But what if you really want something unique like dragon wings? The closest you are going to get are the bat pony wings with that. Which don't even give you very much detailing anyway.
I have used the generator before and it seems like a good thing to makes ideas and know some things you might want to change or add to your actual OC creation. However, its how some people use it is how it makes it seem lazy. Its a good website for a base or idea... but not for a fully complete artwork.
Well to be honest I used to use the base but you’re right drawing the poses of your characters are much funner so from now on I’m gonna start drawing ponies from scratch and if it look bad i’ll just keep going thank you for making me realize the mistake I’ve been making
I have used the pony generator/maker/creator and can personally say it's a wonderful secondary tool for new artists and fans of MLP. Notice however that I say secondary, its great for reference and to help figure out what you want from your OC but the way I see it, in the end that's all its meant to be, a reference. Not the end all be all, something to help you to get started, not your final draft. I cannot and will not fault those who feel they aren't skilled enough or don't have the bits to bring their OC to life, but I feel that if you have the time, at least try to attempt drawing, sketching or whatever yourself. Maybe it'll turn out better than you thought our it might be a little wonky and it needs tweaking, like Ty said it's pretty rewarding when you can say "I made that" but hey, that's just me.
I have used the generator before, mostly just to get a better idea of what i want my mlp oc to look like. Im not very good at making ponies and am part of many other fandom but even then i am still trying to make the design of my character. I don't think using the generator as a reference is a bad thing, i even recomend people to use it to get basic idea of what they want their character to look like before you go out and draw it.
I used the generator after creating or coming up with the idea of my oc. As you have said, I didn't have the money or ability to use a tablet, heck, I didn't know they even existed. Back then, I drew my oc on paper, and she was a stick horse. I started getting better at drawing and barely even used the pony generator. I didn't need it and bought my own tablet. Even before I got a tablet, I drew with a mouse or on bases. The generator is indeed limited, seeing people use it and claim it as art and the way you said it, how great it feels when all of your hard work finally pays off, that's how I feel about art theft. I'm not saying that it is theft, but I tell people that it feels so much better to show the art you've made and say you did it yourself, then show off the art of someone else and say you made it.
(Sorry for all the comments from me you're getting, I have no life sometimes) I have found myself using the Pony Creator with some of my OCs, but often times it's to see how they would show up in the MLP show style. With one of my OCs, I actually used PC to clean up their look, though when I originally drew them, I barely knew anything about how to draw ponies let alone anything about MLP in general. While using it to get an idea of how the character can look like is great and definitely how the PC should be used, I don't agree to using it just to copy and paste an OC onto an art site and call it yours in entirety. I once shown my drawings of my MLP OCs to a friend of mine and they asked me to draw some of theirs, directing me to where I can find images of them. I was expecting vectors or paper drawings, when instead I was faced PC copy-n-pastes. While I was still able to draw some of my friend's OCs, I found the experience to be painful, especially because many of the OCs were compromised of challenging colors and I don't mean good challenging. I'm pretty sure there were 3 solid black ponies with neon colors wildly thrown in. So, bringing this to a close, I rather agree with you, Tyandaga.
I only use the generator to get an idea for an oc.
I use it for fun, and to see if I can get my OC to come out of Pony Creator
Same, but when I finish I make a drawing of it
thats wat the generator should actually be used for i think. to get something from ur head so u can see wat needs to be tweaked. though not everyone can/will be able to do it but still
same (I also use dress up games to get ideas along with music)
CassidyDoodles607 same
Just realized, over the years his necklace slowly goes more and more down
It's a linear function of my ability to draw x3
It makes much more sense Gravity wise! Unless the necklace is really tight, it should fall all the way down like it is here :D
By 2025, it’ll be on the floor.
@@Tyandaga Its not free
I think it's good to use for a base but a bad thing for the Actual thing
i think te same about it
yeah
This :3
Agree in the meaning of making intermediate characters you still can improve.
When you start out, and are still in the faze of referencing and heavily referencing, it can help you get a basic idea of what you want. It is also very helpful as a guide for anatomy when making your own poses and drawings.
Software and tablet. I guess people forgot that a simple pencil existst.
Well pencil and paper are absolutely always viable options ;o, however if you wish to show your character online, that can become much more difficult ;p
You just need scanner. Also drawing digitally won't make anyone's art better, if they don't know the basics.
I only draw with pencil
Because
COMPUTER MOUSE
True! Pemcil and paper are always here!!!
I only draw on paper or phone bacause i cant draw with mouse!
Adoptables may not be sold for money or dA points."
I actually recently used a generator program to help me flex my creative juices.
It just means it might be time to revisit the very old ones! ;)
Ooh, thanks for the heads-up on PidgePudge's generators.
Rotsuoy same I love to draw when someone is talking to help like to say what to do and what not to do!
He even says "DO NOT SELL WHAT YOU MAKE WITH THIS, CREDITING ME OR NOT" or something along those lines.
It's more complicated than that, op. The assets are Zoi's, but neither Hasbro IP nor end-user OC are. The honor system should be pretty obvious here for both program and user.
I only use pony generator to come up with a look for my pony. The rest I draw myself
Yeah! i did that!
Bruna craftGM that is a great way to get a idea of what you want you oc to look like. Yet if you use it for actual scenes for your art is just lazy and unoriginal
I know, I think the generator's style is kind of ugly so, I never really used it. I only used it to get an idea of how my ocs would look like.

There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.

2. There are stupid questions.
"What is 1 + 1?"
"Are you alive?"
"Am I dead?"
"Do I have a heart?"
"John Will Smith from the second grade."
"Are you a person?"
i don't like the pony generator. my OC is a darconaqquis and since the generator cant make anything other than ponies i find it sets a boundary to your creativity
maybe that’s why it’s called “pony” generator 😳
Sorry for the lack of uploads recently ^^;. Final exams are over, so videos should be more common from now on :)
+Tyandaga Yay ^^ And great video as always Tyan, I used the generator to design my oc originally and recently one for my mum, and I don't use it that often as I used it to get the basics of creating a pony oc ^^ Can't wait to get started on my collab with you in terms of scripting ^^
Ywah! I e benn checking everyday and there's barely been anything, and now, I don't even know anymore!
OMG I thought you stopped making videos thx for head up!
Yay, I look forward to (slightly) more Tyandaga videos! This'll be fun ^^
Yay ^.^
what type of drawing tablet ? I want one too but u haven't really started saving.
I use a wacom bamboo tablet :)
Sandra Estrada I personally use a wacom intuos tablet :). They're usually very cheap ;p
+Sparky Doodles is there anything you don't like about it ?
My favorite use for the pony generator is a game I play with my friends. Go to pony generator. Click the randomize feature. Then each of your friends playing the game will draw their version of the random OC, (with the ability to make small alterations, such as height, thinning or thickening of features, adding clothing, etc) and at the end of the round, you vote on who drew the best version. Rinse and repeat until someone reaches 5 points.
I tried the pony generator once and I had the character thought out in my head but I felt that the pony generator limited my design and I could barely make it look alike to my character.
It can certainly be tricky x3
I use pony generator to make the basic looks then the backstory finally i draw it
sadly i use pony generator, as i cant draw well, however i have switched to a (in my opinion) somewhat better one.
1:11 or just use pencil and paper. That's a thing.
Repent, non believer! x3
Colored pencils;3
Wats a pappru? And a pen cell?

Tyandaga Do you know any good poses for bat wings? i cant think of any :(
I used it for the first version of my OC, when I was sort o getting into the fandom.
^.^
I use the pony generator to see how the different colours and styles work.

+Stardash Yep me too!
samee!
i tried making a base out of it :/
That's the only reason I use it :3

Absolutely! x3
TW rules I have no things to color with :(
Scout San The Meif-a since its back to school season, just go to Staples and get some $1 crayola pencils.
Scout San The Meif'Wa Do you watch Aphmau or something?
Not to be rude, just asking, cuz I do too!
Like, you make a pony in the generator, then you redraw it in your own style while changing a bit stuff like the hairstyle
Etc, and then post it online (not the pony in the generator style, the one that you made)
Is it ok to use it that way?
I did use it to create an IDEA of what my oc could be but I am developing from there
me too
That's actually what I do too!

I love your thumbnails and videos tbh :D
I think character generators can be good when you have an idea for a character design and want to take reference from it for a drawing or SMTH.
Now, because I'm the type of person that is against people saying something is wrong, but not offering any solutions, here's my own two cents on how this video could have been a little better:
1: make sure the points you make actually apply to the thing you're criticizing.
2: be up front about how the pony generator is not a bad thing, and how your opinion on the matter shouldn't stop someone from using the pony generator.
3: try to be a little less monotone.
(I ran out of room again...)
+MOOSEWHISKER
4: try to make sure that two different points you make don't contradict one another
5: before making a point, play devils advocate, both in the process of writing the script, and in the script itself, it makes the video more entertaining, and can strengthen your point, as well as weed out shallow and contradictory points.
...And that's about it! I hope that you can take to heart at least something that I said in this rant, and can improve your content for the future!
TOTALLY AGREE
MOOSEWHISKER I agree completely!!
when someone comments on a 3 month old comment that you forgot about lol
I used it to think i ideas for a characters for a book. So i have a good reason. Keep being awesome!

^.^
+Tyandaga ^-^
I used it once. It was interesting, yet it lacked stuff that I think should had been needed. A shaved head hair style, more clothing accessories, etc.
Unfortunately yeah it is limited, but then again, for something that's free it's hard to complain x3
Tyandaga Yus. 3
yeah I tried to make my oc ( Flowett ) and I came out with something not close at all
Makers creation At last Aw.
i used the pony generator as a base to trace in meta ( for my bertus model xD )
i use the hair style/ colors to sorta find what i want and refined it for the model itself ( changed the hair multiple times )
the pony generator is a good tool if your starting out and you need a reference for a character or a base for said character
don't use the pony creator to make the char in full
as you said tyandaga using it to show the person who is drawing it for you what you want is good
take the character straight out of the generator without edits or a actual drawing/ plush/ model its bad
But those are for different videos.
or you can use pencil and paper :/ I feel like the only one that uses pencil and paper... *sigh*
You're not alone :3
Stand strong, lone traveler ;p
I would if I knew how to draw

This vid speaks THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH
+Bloodhuntress44 Preach! =3
Tyandaga x3
I drew my very first OC and then my friend told me about Pony Generator. I was so excited until I saw I had a totally different pattern and mane and accessories than what it offered, so I opted to use it ONLY for poses and I improved my style, while my friend didn't improve until years later after my prompting.
The Generator is good for making rough drafts of characters that keep popping in your head. It's not for final pieces. The posed are extremely limited, there's no sense of 3D rotation besides the head (which in in the v3 version), and there are only so many hair options.
What if a newer version came out that let you customise the front, sides and back of your head hair:
Examples of these would be position, shapes, texture, length, and size. For example:
Do you want hair sides to be straight, wavy, curly, swirly, or slightly curved? Do you want the end of your hair to be straight cut, or pointed whilst curving? What angle do they curve or cut at?
And if there's secondary & tertiary colour options for the hair, YOU can customise how the hair's colour pattern works to fit your character.
And then an update to poses, where we can rotate things besides the head and joints. I want my OC to be viewed from a 3-quarter view like the ponies at 0:43 in the video, and then move the legs to suit that character's pose.
I don't have the software, but I'm sure that someone's making a newer version of the pony generator. the V3 version has removed the feature to add a cutie mark. which is unfortunate.
what if you use pony creator and just customize
it on the computer so that it looks like how you want it to look like. ( that's what I did)
smart boi
The selling them thing is a little hard to work around. On the one hand, you're selling someone else's art. The creator drew all that stuff. They own it. You can't sell other's stuff. On the other hand, you're not technically selling that art, but the design of the character, which belongs to you...It's a grey area.
What really annoys me the most is that some people are willing to buy them o.O
Tyandaga I guess some people just suck at design. I dunno. It's like, have you every looked at something you loved and wondered "Why have I never thought about this before?" It's kinda like that. You're more selling the idea, than the thing itself.
the pony generator is best use for people who haven't the right tings to draw but that doesn't mean they can submit and be proud of what they made with the generator because they didn't make it the generator did
and i don't use pony generator because I am not a fan of mlp
I think its best off to try very hard, with only help from others (not generators, but only if you have no inspiration) and you'll be very proud what happens next
Tyandaga you are awesome, you helped me shape my OC ALOT!
I used to use pony generator until I was able to draw ponies and then I quit the pony generator
Same
+Krista Schwerzler at least I'm not the only one XD
+Valerie Jones Seems to be the case for many ;p
+Tyandaga yes and 3d pony creator to
Its terrible! I used it but then I got bored of thoose dumb hair styles! Me is an artist me self so I do know that for some people is usefull! But I dont recommend it!
^.^
Same I stay sharp and use treditional pencil and paper
Well that was kind of offensive. Pony creator is all I have. All I can use. I can’t speedpaint like others can. I don’t have the app I don’t have the software. Pony creator is all I can use.
IT WENT TERRIBLE
Same :(
If you have a phone you could use ibspanit or just draw on paper
SELLING A OC?!!
you are very lazy if you did that 😶😌
rlly bruh
not just lazy, it's straight up plagerisim.
+Dina Van Rooijen Yep. Scamming to get money too.
I've seen somebody on deviantArt selling them for about 100points each as there was a "reference" sheet (They used the generator to do different poses and such).
You're literally just scamming people when you do that. Especially when somebody puts hours into something that they sell for 100points too!
an*
I HATE pony creater.
Winter Ice Frost Because you don't know the porpuse
Winter Ice Frost if you could spell creator right or purpose.
Is this an app or something? How can I use it and get it?! PLZ HELP MEEE!!!
Keep up the great work
over the generations of tyandaga the necklace slowly starts listening to physics and stops floating
Him: drawing characters can be expensive!
Me: have u not heard of a paper and a pencil?
I honestly adore getting references from the pony generator, because the reaction when a commissioner sees how well the character they made looks when done in a different style or at a different angle is great! I even use the pony generator to try out different hairstyles and color palettes. But I'm with you I honestly just think, like ALOT of doll/generator sites and programs that it's been done to death. Not to mention there are a TON of "mary sue" type OC's that have come out of the generator that have also given it a negative connotation.
How much does a good drawing tablet cost? One that I can look at the screen of the tablet?
I can't draw free hand but I don't even fell like using a base is my own original character so how can the pony generator be original? I'm branching out from bases and starting to draw but I'm not very good tho could u give me some tips maybe
I'm a little confused with the question? :ss
I used it to work out the general image of my OC, as I am better at writing than drawing. I can use the character I made as a base, and change it as I need to. I think it's really good as something to work from, either as an artist, a writer, or any other medium.
Agreed x3
Pony generator was mega childhood I use to make avatar the last air bender characters in there when I was younger lol
Glad you found it helpful! =3
Using the generator as a source of inspiration or as a reference is fine IMO
Hey Tyandaga! I have done quite alot of pony OC's, and I've realized that the pony generator is a great way to start your charcter
I do agree it's a horrible thing to use solely on it's own but it was an amazing planning tool, same with the 3D maker which is still up and running (I've resorted to that one now since flash went)
So in conclusion, it's a great tool for planning and posing but not an art saver.
My suggestion is that make a base oc in the generator and then redraw it on paper bc ur style will oubviously be different from the generator and if ur limited within the generator for somthing and u wanna change it, change it on paper its like the best way to create an oc and I've been using the method for over a year now
I draw my own characters and my oc is a bat pony but I'm thinking of changing it
Actually for my Earth Pony, Wolfbane and Unicorn Almanac.
Agreed x3
I used it to give me an Idea for an OC! I then used a sketch app to create my own OC! BUT YOUR VID INSPIRED ME! AND SO DID UR AMAZING OC!
(Sorry for all the comments from me you're getting, I have no life sometimes)
I have found myself using the Pony Creator with some of my OCs, but often times it's to see how they would show up in the MLP show style.
So, bringing this to a close, I rather agree with you, Tyandaga.
x3
I, myself, have used the generator before, but mainly to get a rough idea on what my OC will look at. I use it as a point of reference.
