I think non pony OCs are great. You can stand out more but it is good to stike to what animal you like best insted of doing what you think you shuold do so if that animal is one of the main three then go for it just do what you want to do for your self not for any one else. ;-3
I actually have a non-pony OC, who is a member of a species I created called a Canrasettuus(CAN-RUH-SET-US) or Canrasetti(CAN-RUH-SET-EE) for plural. The species is currently undergoing a redesign, but essentially the somewhat resemble a pony, with features I suppose you could classify as a reptilian/wolfish/insectisoid/goatlike thing... With a pony resemblence, body-wise. They also have the ability to get a cutie mark, but instead of getting it through finding a special talent, they need to discover their purpose, or the reason why they are here. Kinda soul-searchy, I guess. :)
I would like to point out that chimeras are very flexible in definition. While D&D had a specific type, the word "chimera" really means any hybrid animal that has complete features of both, and "chimerism" is actually a named medical condition, usually referring to something having DNA from 2 different zygotes. This can mean that a creature has both male and female organs, have multiplicity of features (like heads - yes, that is a thing that happened in real life), or even have features of multiple species like the mythical Chimera (although, I'm not sure the different "species" were that far removed genetically). This isn't bashing on your video at all. It is just something cool I wanted to share.
Fun fact: some male calico cats are chimeras. It’s much rarer than the XXY variety but it happens and is the only way a male calico can reproduce since XXY are sterile.
I rejected the main 3 pony types and just decided to create a brand new pony race altogether: Trossels, a race of ponies with spiked hooves with elemental magic who formed an entire society unto themselves and, while most "normal" ponies think they're extinct, Trossels are so isolated in their country they believe anypony that ISN'T a Trossel (or Kwincol, as they're called, which literally means 'non-Trossel') simply doesn't exist. I have well over 40 of them myself, but I tend to stick to my own tightly packed together cast of about 6-8 main ponies. However, I did also create a lich to serve as an antagonist in my headcanon.
Let's see... In the realm of ponies: I have a pegasus (Sunset Melody) I have a unicorn (Gear Head) & an earth pony. (Vanilla Cocoa) In the realm of not quite a pony: I have a deer (Mocha) I also have a bee pony (Sweet Bee) But I've been thinking of maybe adding a griffon, dragon, or maybe even a changeling to the mix. :3

'You need to be careful with dragons because they're usually associated with harming ponies.' We have like three changeling reviewers. I'd say changelings are pretty much associated with the same thing. It doesn't really matter what you choose as long as it's designed competently. It has little to do with what the kind of species represents, unless you want to integrate that into some sort of side story or whatever. But this comes from someone who isn't really into doing that kind stuff.
ehm, Geeky please don't paraphrase me or Ty. We never said this quote. Instead we said that ADULT dragons are probelmatic as those are more potrayed as monsters within the show(Lord Torch seems like a rather okay guy, but we only saw him among other dragons) and the mere difference in size makes it hard to interact with ponies. We said that Baby and Teenage dragons are therefore preferable. And we also pointed out at several points that things like this can be done but it is much harder to pull of. You need to go a few extra miles in terms of design and backgroundstory to justify this stuff and that people will critisize you anyway. It's basically liek alicorn OCs. It can be done great but it is easy to screw it up. And again, this are no absolute rules, this is a word of advice to make it easier to create an OC that fits into Equestria
One of the OCs I've been designing and redesigning is a Phoenix OC. Not a lot of people have them...but I actually really like the Phoenix's design...and while they aren't exactly talking....I think I could write up some explanation for the phoenix to be able to talk.

The subjects that this topic addresses sound very similar to the video Mad Munchkin made a couple years back with Silver Quill and Dr. Wolf. Anyway, I too found it challenging when it came to creating my OC, both in design and in backstory. I was originally going for one of the three traditional choices (pegasus, to be exact), but for some reason, I didn't feel myself fully in sync with the original character I came up with. It wasn't until I had watched a blind reaction of "Twilight's Kingdom" done by BlueStarBrony that I had gotten an idea. Long story short, I had posted a comment in his video that summed up to, "think that seaponies might make an appearance in the show?" And then, when I saw A Moment With Doctor Wolf video last year where Lightning Bliss was talking about her worries that her OC might be "too much", he said that she shouldn't be afraid of allowing her creativity to flow. So I thought that there's no reason why I should be afraid of being creative either. So I started the idea of my OC resembling a merpony. But I also wanted to stay true to the show's canon. After all, the only mention of either seaponies or merponies in Friendship is Magic is in the comics (which I don't read simply because I'm not a comic kind of person). Then I watched the episode "Trade Ya!", where we had a minor character who was in a wheelchair kind of cart. And I had thought to myself..."That's perfect! I can choose something traditional for my OC (since a unicorn with proper training can perform self-levitation magic to get in and out of her cart) and still be creative by having her look like a merpony!
That's because Mad Munchkins video was one of the things that inspired me to roll with a fox OC t obegin with^^. However, this video is more meant as a follow up. Maddies Video is about the lack of Non-Pony Ocs(Ty did a similiar video for the matter ;) ) While this video is about how to create one^^ And sure, Seaponies are fun :P
My OC is a Wyvern. Although my form has a fish-like tail instead of a normal blade, so that I could have him being more amphibious, hunting fish in the sea vs hunting land creatures. I also figured it would make him a little more agreeable with ponies and other herbivores.
My idea is actually a Hippogriff, much like Silver quill, or should I just make a griffon? I'm unsure. Any clues? ( The OC you see for my profile pic is old and terrible, I was quite a lot stupider when I made it ) The real problem for me is actually DRAWING / designing the damn thing, that is my real problem, I don't have any fancy tools for doing so, like any sort of 100 dollar program or any sort of special gear for doing so. Any help on this? As I planned on having it by a hybrid of Pony, Zebra, and Griffon. ( I know three races, it should only be two, but I couldn't decide on either pony or zebra, so I chose 25% of both from one parent ) but anyways, could you give me a few tips with how I can create this? As I want to make it, but it would never come out without help. I'm a good story writer, but I'm terrible at art / drawing. ( my idea was a Hippogriff like silver quill with a fair amount of changes, to be honest, I don't watch the original show, so I have no idea about lore, or anything like that ) ( I just dislike the show, I only like the fan fictions and the OC's, and don't try to change my opinion on that ) Any ideas on those parts? My OC of myself is my own made-up creature called a Falcat, a cat with griffin style wings, because I don't feel like I fit in with any three pony races. It doesn't have hooves, but it has a close relation to Griffins.
Fadestep is a cat who has a few different forms, dragon and half-human being a few. She doesn't have a pony form, so she uses her cat form in Equestria.
Considering a Hydra. Each head could represent a different side of an opinion (for example, one head found be in favor of pony generator whereas the other hates it). Probably won't go with it, but--- crap, I just realised someone might steal this idea... O well

I like non-pony OC's. They give off a bigger sense of diversity and creativity within the fandom. And as for my OC, I've decided to settle on a basilisk or another large serpent.
This is a great video, I like seeing you to working together. You raise some good points, especially on adapting existing species from MLP, how to use or change them. But I think in the end it all comes down to the delivery and the personality carring the character (for so example: I really enjoy seeing Maddys Mary Sue, because she managed to exegarate these personality traits so much, she becomes entertaining). Just one thing I didn't really like in this video: Tricky, I love your redesign by Grey Silvermane, but you need to get that pose holding up the sign with your tail back. I now, it is basically an easy way to eddit in remarks after the fact, but I always found it to be indearing and unique. Having it floating over your head is anything but. It just comes of as unprofessional. And since you asked about our own OCs: I made an outline for an OC living in Equestria. Bastion, she is an owlbear and an ambassador for her people living in Canterlot. She is very enthusiastic about her job, eager to get to know somebody new, although she rarely lets someone in, being in a strange country. Sometimes a little lazy and not quite at home in the big city, she still doesn't want to let anyone at home down, for disappoining anybody was her greatest fear after getting that position as an ambassador. Well, that's a short summery, but this character will probably never really see the light of day, because as I said before, the most important thing for an OC which you create to represent yourself is that you have a personality to carry it, which I can't yet deliver. But enough of my ramblings. With so many new episodes being dropped, I hope you two have the opportunity to work together on other projects soon :)
Your OC idea doesn't sound too shabby, jsut give it a try and remember an OC is not necessarly somethign that represents yourself. In theory every Fan Fic character is an OC ;) And yeah, i look into getting my sign back. I simply removed it from this video but I forgot the Text of one. However i thoguht it does look suprisingly fitting to bring my point accross so i left it in. Anyway glad that you liked the video ;)
Naw, the problem is, I don't have a platform to use it. As I said, I don't have the personality to make youtube videos. And most importantly, not the time. Maybe some day, some fanfiction, will see. Probably not before my masters degree. Actually, creating characters is something I enjoy quite a lot. I like to play role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons or Das Schwarze Auge. So maybe I get Ponyfinder and homebrew my character there. Yes, that is true, it gets the point across. That's why I like this idea in general :-)
I love this video but i was wondering what your thought where on making your oc on a different format than the computer? For example hand drawn and like when Silver Quill sometimes does a plushie.
I personally think that is manageable. That being said while I think Silver Quills plushie videos are okay to get out some quick thoughts, I wouldn't like him to do them exclusively. Not to mention that he seemingly decided to drop them completely by now. There are also a lot of people that call that method lazy. However it's really depends on how much effort you want to put into it. Setting it up as some sort of puppet show actually osunds like a fun idea :P Now using hand drawn images can be used pretty good as a style if done right. The best example i can think oif is doodle dabble though sadly she isn't active anymore
I stuck with three pony designs, Unicorn, Pegasus, and Earth Pony because I’m not that great of a artist who used a Pony Design App to make the one you see now. But when I was designing them I used a Pony Blank model, traced it, and added my own designs to make it my own. My Unicorn OC is a Flutter Pony Unicorn with big butterflies wings. The app had fairy wings but the color match with the body color, that did not look right. My Pegasus OC is part Dragon with scales on her wing, except for the tip made of feathers, her belly, chest, and brim on the nose, she has a long dragon tail with a furry tip that she used to grab stuff, she has two antlers on her head, and she can breathe fire, she is also a few inches taller then normal ponies. They did not have any of that on the app that looked right. The Earth Pony OC, looks like any other ponies, I just gave her the dream walking power like Luna when she sleeps, her names Dreamcatcher. Believe me when I say I would love to have a Fox OC like Tricky but I work really hard on my pony designs, backstory, and their bonds with each other to let them go. Now outside of the Brony fandom, yes my OC is a half-demon fox priestess.
Well if yo ucan come up with a good story, sure why not. But personally i would put Dinosaurs into the monster/beast category and you could simply roll with a wingless dragon, basically same result^^

You do have a point with dinosaurs fit in the monsters category, but I think only carnivores would fit in that and not the herbivores, because both ponies and dinosaurs are herbivores and some dinosaurs are the same size as ponies, like the one i decided is Psittacosaurus. Alright, I'll put in something that's a little bit less dickish. On the subject of OC's, I think the only thing you need to worry about is how they appeal to the senses. You can choose any sort of species you want, hell, go crazy with it. But just make it plesant to look at. i.e. Don't give it a color scheme that will make our eyes puke everywhere (Oversaturated colors are a no-no) Make it an easy design for people to draw if they so desire ( No wacky patterns or giant features or limbs that might obscure the design. I should show you my first OC design. Wish I still had the thing, it was horrendous) And if you wish, give it some clothes or distinguishing features (The changelings are a good example of characters you should consider putting something on) It's really an easy thing to do. You just gotta ask yourself 'Would I like this if it wasn't mine? Does it appeal to my senses?' If the answer is no, then rework whatever you need to.
I think imma go with a changeling. Either shiny-winged or reformed. I've got a cool idea for the colors already so its mainly the body design that I'm debating. Any suggestions?
Great vid guys, you made some very valid points and brought up a lot of good ideas and advice. Speaking as someone with a non-pony oc I can agree with a lot of your guys' ideas, and as exotic as púcas are, I could picture them fitting in with the diverse collection of species the show has offered. Since the show takes a lot of inspiration from mythologies around the world, it's rather fitting my oc's species comes from old Celtic mythos. I hadn't even heard of púcas until about 2 years ago when I was in a play called "Harvey" at a community theater. The show vaguely describes what púcas are and briefly explains that the title character is an invisible 6-foot-tall rabbit that only appears to certain people. The idea of a rabbit creature like that intrigued me and when I researched púcas further, I learned that they took other forms such as goats, wolves, and horses depending on the legend. That was when I knew I had to make my oc a púca. After a few months of experimenting and tinkering, I finally settled on a look I liked and even then I've still gone back and made minor changes here and there. I liked the concept of having a shapeshifter oc so I took some slight inspiration from Discord while retaining the feel of a different species. As bizarre as a half-blue, half tan horse-like creature with oversized rabbit ears and paws, and a wolf tail is, I love it and I think it represents me pretty well. Most people would probably take offence to comments like "your oc looks weird" but I consider "weird" a compliment rather than an insult.

1. as usual, story matters the most. 2. sometimes an OC might not be non-pony, but rather just some special race of ponies. Among what I have, I have a race called "tricorn" which is kinda a unicorn with a pair of square horns. They are OP for sure, but it's just because they were created as war machines. So... Writing backstory for them is quite challenging, but at least the result is something really unique. XD 3. some people just bring their, for example, furry OC into the fandom and we just assume that his OC is in the MLP universe (for silly reasons). Well, the point is, just use whatever you like and make a good story out of it is OK. As for what they come from, well, my OC might not even come from MLP universe. So... whatever reasonable is okay. (I also have OCs that is from MLP universe but fell into rift or something and ended up settle down in other universes.) 4. the point is, it's beter let the OC fun to be interacted with. Sometimes maybe even just break the 4th wall. I sometimes would say that, I'll glue a horn on some people's OC (usually pegasus), while drawing a horn on the pic of the OC and post it out. This joke works quite good for at least once, so... It's okay, I guess. Of course, there's no good abusing jokes, but when not abusing it, it's fun.
I have a Draconequus/pony-hybrid OC named Midnight Wonder. She comes from a land outside of Equestria where Draconequuses . . . Draconequuai . . . Dracula . . . whatever the plural for Draconequus is, are rare but not limited to one. I chose to make her half-pony for the same reason Silver Quill made his OC half-pony: to have a Cutie Mark. I really wanted my OC to have a Cutie Mark so I made her half-pony. But that's pretty much the only pony thing about her appearance. Well, that and how tiny she is. She's pretty much the same size as Lightning Bliss. If you're wondering why I chose a Draconequus, it's because I really couldn't decide on what kind of pony would be best for her and I just found the idea of a Draconequus to be a really good match. She's defiantly not your average "pony" as she's pretty quirky and tends to be a bit more outlandish than ponies. Not that she goes around spreading chaos wherever she pleases, but just having a wild imagination that accidently becomes part of reality every so often. Other than that, she's actually pretty quiet, shy, and reserved. But friendly and open hearted nevertheless. I know a lot of people are gonna make jokes about her being the offspring of Fluttershy and Discord (other than the fact that so many already have) as she really does seem to be such. However, that is not the case. She just has a resemblance to Fluttershy (character wise) with powers like Discord (but much less under control). She also has pony magic in her since she is, as mentioned before, half-pony. So she can learn several spells and actually has a real knack for it. She just needs to learn to control her magic before she can ever hope to become a master. I've made sure to give her plenty of realistic flaws without making her helpless yet still in need of help from time to time. I really hope people like her and won't be too harsh about her. What do you guys think?

Anyway, I have always loved unicorns before even Gen 1 of MLP happened so it was a no brainer for me and I love them with wings anyway. In the ended I picked an alicorn though because of my life experiences. I was actually thinking of creating 2 non-pony OCs as well, companions for my Alicorn OC because she has lived for a very long time and has always craved companionship since where she's originally from, she was rejected (I am still working out the kinks of her back story). But one is a Dragon and the other is a Winged lion. When I was younger I always loved seeing dragons, unicorns, and lions together. They just always seemed to fit. Great video guys hehe.
My main characters tend to change form based on their location. He started as a Castlevania Dhampyr. many many years ago, then turned into a Mobian Fox, has been a Dragon, and now has a pony form he uses. Aside from him I do like to make native to world charactets as well following the logic of Jet Li's 'The One', making different versions of my self based on location and time period the story is set in.
while I do have a unicorn oc, I also have my fursona who has traveled to Equestria via dimensional rifts. Kind of the same thing that allowed Twilight to venture to Canterlot high but obviously a different start point. The only thing I have to figure out when seen in Equestria is how tall he should be next to my unicorn oc and other unicorns.

Yeah, I plan to make its looks less cannon to the show's Manticore, because, honestly, I think the show's version looks kinda ugly >.< But since you guys seem to know what you're doing, could you offer me any tips? My oc is not technically a pony, it's a dragon pony hybrid, but what makes her a bit special is that she doesn't look like a hybrid. She looks like a pony with an unusual tail. She actually gets the tail from her dragon part, and she has spikes on her hoofs, well not really spikes, she also has sharp like ears, and sharp teeth, and also a curved horn. So, yeah, XD and feedback?
Does Changeling count as None-Pony? Otherwise I still do have a Deer, which should be clear of the problem. Furthermore, I am currently consider a Giraf as well. Such a charming critter to play around with.

Okay so after watching this video I have to express my opinion and say that I too also like the idea of non pony OC's because like tynadaga said it's a great way to travel outside the herd and really express what truly represents you. I have a Griffin as my OC. However I originally had a pony OC that went to a batpony but I felt that wasn't really all that unique and didn't represent me well. so after years of changing his design I finally went with griffin. this allowed me to be more unique than the rest of my friends and I felt like it represented me very well because I can have a temper, especially when it comes to protecting my friends and family.
Tricky Fox like I said it took years to get him right and multiple changes and redesigns like you said but over all I'm glad I got him the way I want him
I actually just stumbled on this video while im researching non pony ocs.😄 Im currently designing and creating a character i would like to make a fanfiction on since i would like to show my interpretation of some hidden historical events in equestrian and pre-equestrian history with a species we dont know much about but was still introduced in the show. I wanted a character that was like a secret muse for a lot of struggling writers and was like a guardian of a secret library in equestria and beyond and i decided to go with a sphinx/kirin hybrid. Originally I was think of a draconequs but decided against it since thats a little too obvious and sphinxes are pretty cool in concept and more fitting. Plus with the inclusion of kirin DNA it would be a fun mixture. Since we dont know anything about sphinxes in canon to the show and barely anything about kirin culture. So I am putting it upon myself to make my own interpretation on how at least the sphinx culture would be like. And their main core personalities besides the outliers. Exploring kirin and sphinx culture and abilities and how they could effect Equestria during Princess Twilights reign now that creatures are integrating more and more in pony society and is more openly accepted. It'll be a fun concept and fun project to work on. This OC will not be my main one but its still fun to work on this.
There are plenty of other myths in the world to base an OC off of. For example, I've used such various African animals as the Gazelle, Giraffe, Okapi, and Rhino as the basis of OCs. I've even used the African unicorn called the Abada (which appears to have a second smaller horn on it's nose and a lion-like tail). Unfortunately, I have no real artistic talent to draw them. However, there are some mythical beasts that seem to defy description such as the eight legged Sleipnir and the seven headed/winged Uchchaihshravas. The real Pegasus is a divine beast and one of a kind. So are Sleipnir and Uchchaihshravas. Very few have ever drawn those in any convincing way let alone made an OC based on one. Is there any way to make such a character without being Mary Sue?
Well the trick would be to turn Sleipnir and Uchchaihshravas into Ponytribes (or Horsetribes, we saw horses from Saddlearabia so why not^^) that jsut happen to have 8 legs or 7 heads that can fly. Sure both of them can fly without wings but the main problem with those two is mroe that they would look rather odd. Just keep in mind that pegasus is in theory divine as well, so as long a creature isn't too powerful there is no problem with turning it into it's own race
Hm, I'm almost considering replacing my current moth pony with a redesign of my old "HalfChangeling"... not that I know any good way to design a half pony, half changeling. He was originally just a pony base with a bunch of changeling features grafted onto it, I need something a tad more creative (and visually appealing) than that. There's just only so many ways to make a character sometimes, y'know?
Is it alright my character is a raccoon with sorta electric powers.. Given by One of my OCs August who is a same species as discord.. Wait a minute electric powers is too much scratch that. 😅
Why be normal... When you can be non normal, a lot of people pass on other non pony OCs (probably because there are more bases but...) When I turned a small character out of a pony into a " bug pony" it makes me and my character a lot more interesting and because she doesn't have a cutie mark. But I look forward to them looking at your advice and sucking it in like I do. Great job! I hope you have room for another sub!! I have a Pantheran as my main (the cat creature, like Capper) Her name is Kieran (meaning Little, dark one) She is black with one red and one green eye. She is a Master thief, who mostly only steals what she really needs, but if given a job with the right price, she will steal whatever needed. She can be quite Naive and get distracted easily, due to the cat side of her, but she is very street smart
My main OC is a Pegasus but Im the type who just keeps getting ideas. I have a blind Pegasus, a unicorn I’m still trying to find a story for and maybe an earth pony. Also I’m creating one that’s a zebra pony hybrid. You didn’t touch on hippogriffs. Must’ve been before the movie. I love the hippogriff oc idea and still toy with making one of my unicorn OCs, Crystal Blue, a hippogriff. I also would love a Quetzalcoatl based character with azhuatl being there. I’m a Quetzalcoatlus pterosaur fan girl so it’d be awesome. Also there was a kelpie in the comics. That would be interesting for an oc. The kelpies had awesome designs. There’s an abada too. One of the kelpies had a aquatic body and was evil but the others weren’t. They had dogs and other creatures too. And we can thank the movie for really opening things up as well. Cats, parrots, so many weird Klugetown creatures. I wish the fandom was still as active now as a few years ago. We’d see soooo many more OC varieties I bet. Hey Tyandaga. If you remember me then you have propably noticed that I have changed my oc from a unicorn to a bat pony, this is becayse I actually love the dark theme abd I am a little dark my self. The reason for the change is that O couldn't guite relate to the unicorn, and I love the thought of flying in the night sky, so I thought why not change it and I did. I kept the first name "Shadow" and changed the last one to "Fire"

My go to OC is actually a Diet Coke colored mule named Overnight. I actually really like donkeys and mules irl, and found them a little disrespected in the show. Because mules and donkeys aren't interchangeable like in the show (since mules are actually half horse/pony) I wanted to make Overnight more like a real mule. My non pony OC is a warrior cat who goes to Equestria in her dreams. She found a magic Crystal and hid it under her nest. Her name is Beestripe and she is a long haired yellow tabby she cat with black stripes with amber eyes and she's from SavannahClan.
I am currently in works of creating my oc but this is what I am thinking, since I am incredibly in love with kaiju (Godzilla, mothra, kong, gamera, etc) and venom (from marvel) I am thinking of a Godzilla like creature, but with some venom characteristics (like the eyes, teeth, attitude) and I want to mix the two to make a great new unique character, and I’ll try to incorporate Godzilla abilities into my character like atomic breath etc, but I’ll probably just use my breath as some type of magic instead since it works better with the world of mlp
My OC is a were pony. A half pony, half wolf hybrid also called a lycan. Alicorn son of luna. I do not mind the idea of none pony OC's. but I prefer when someone has a reason for it. A example is how My OC is a werepony because even in the brony kingdom I feel like a outside while trying to fit in. I would have choosen a changling OC but I like the night and I as a person respect loyalty. A wolf just seems to fit. And a lycan would let my OC be able to transform into a pony while still being a wolf OC and be in hiding. My OC is the son of luna but I did even that for a reason. In my fanfic my OC loses his temper with twilight and attacks all of equestria. After Celestia has to intervene to stop him because he is so OP, Celestia removes my OC's Alicorn powers leaving him as just a earth style lycan. This reflects a event in my life where I fell from grace. And as part of that he constantly sees the nightmare version of himself mocking him for being weak. Which only makes himself suffer even more. Then most of my fan fiction is of my oc getting better not just mentally but also trying to get his alicorn powers back while trying to fight to be pack leader again.
I'm just wondering, would a yellow earth pony with a griffin tail with fire and water powers, who's mother is a Pegasus and father who is a bat, with a bat pony brother count as a non-pony oc, or just a regular earth pony?
You are a pony no matter how you look at it but not just a regular earth pony. It begs the question: if you father was a bat (are we talking about an actual bat or a bat pony?) and your mother was a pegasus, where did you get the lion tail(because without the other features it is just the tail of a lion, rather popular within the fandom though) and especially where did you get the fire and water powers? Pony biology doesn't make much sense, still you have to get those traits somewhere.
why do ponies seem to only have one body color, there seem to be little ponies with spots or ponies with two colors. for instance cobs hmmm as Tyrandaga chose a deer to represent his country. I would choose either a Kerry bog/Shetland pony, Red deer as both are native whats your opinion on either
My guess is to keep the designs as simple as possible. I think that was one core idea when they designed the characters back in the day. It was all about easy to draw stuff :P I personally like to see some different horse designs as well aside from the usual, so i would say go for it :P I think Mad Munchkin based her Pony OC on a Shetland Pony, but not sure about it

I think non pony OCs are great. You can stand out more but it is good to stike to what animal you like best insted of doing what you think you shuold do so if that animal is one of the main three then go for it just do what you want to do for your self not for any one else. ;-3

I actually have a non-pony OC, who is a member of a species I created called a Canrasettuus(CAN-RUH-SET-US) or Canrasetti(CAN-RUH-SET-EE) for plural. The species is currently undergoing a redesign, but essentially the somewhat resemble a pony, with features I suppose you could classify as a reptilian/wolfish/insectisoid/goatlike thing... With a pony resemblence, body-wise. They also have the ability to get a cutie mark, but instead of getting it through finding a special talent, they need to discover their purpose, or the reason why they are here. Kinda soul-searchy, I guess. :)

I would like to point out that chimeras are very flexible in definition. While D&D had a specific type, the word "chimera" really means any hybrid animal that has complete features of both, and "chimerism" is actually a named medical condition, usually referring to something having DNA from 2 different zygotes. This can mean that a creature has both male and female organs, have multiplicity of features (like heads - yes, that is a thing that happened in real life), or even have features of multiple species like the mythical Chimera (although, I'm not sure the different "species" were that far removed genetically).
This isn't bashing on your video at all. It is just something cool I wanted to share.
Fun fact: some male calico cats are chimeras. It’s much rarer than the XXY variety but it happens and is the only way a male calico can reproduce since XXY are sterile.

I've had a changeling OC for a while. They have a magenta scarf, suit, and top hat. He disguises as a blue pegasus.
I rejected the main 3 pony types and just decided to create a brand new pony race altogether: Trossels, a race of ponies with spiked hooves with elemental magic who formed an entire society unto themselves and, while most "normal" ponies think they're extinct, Trossels are so isolated in their country they believe anypony that ISN'T a Trossel (or Kwincol, as they're called, which literally means 'non-Trossel') simply doesn't exist.
I have well over 40 of them myself, but I tend to stick to my own tightly packed together cast of about 6-8 main ponies. However, I did also create a lich to serve as an antagonist in my headcanon.

We have like three changeling reviewers. I'd say changelings are pretty much associated with the same thing. It doesn't really matter what you choose as long as it's designed competently. It has little to do with what the kind of species represents, unless you want to integrate that into some sort of side story or whatever.
But this comes from someone who isn't really into doing that kind stuff.
ehm, Geeky please don't paraphrase me or Ty. We never said this quote. Instead we said that ADULT dragons are probelmatic as those are more potrayed as monsters within the show(Lord Torch seems like a rather okay guy, but we only saw him among other dragons) and the mere difference in size makes it hard to interact with ponies. We said that Baby and Teenage dragons are therefore preferable. And we also pointed out at several points that things like this can be done but it is much harder to pull of. You need to go a few extra miles in terms of design and backgroundstory to justify this stuff and that people will critisize you anyway. It's basically liek alicorn OCs. It can be done great but it is easy to screw it up. And again, this are no absolute rules, this is a word of advice to make it easier to create an OC that fits into Equestria

One of the OCs I've been designing and redesigning is a Phoenix OC. Not a lot of people have them...but I actually really like the Phoenix's design...and while they aren't exactly talking....I think I could write up some explanation for the phoenix to be able to talk.

The subjects that this topic addresses sound very similar to the video Mad Munchkin made a couple years back with Silver Quill and Dr. Wolf.
Anyway, I too found it challenging when it came to creating my OC, both in design and in backstory. I was originally going for one of the three traditional choices (pegasus, to be exact), but for some reason, I didn't feel myself fully in sync with the original character I came up with.
It wasn't until I had watched a blind reaction of "Twilight's Kingdom" done by BlueStarBrony that I had gotten an idea. Long story short, I had posted a comment in his video that summed up to, "think that seaponies might make an appearance in the show?" And then, when I saw A Moment With Doctor Wolf video last year where Lightning Bliss was talking about her worries that her OC might be "too much", he said that she shouldn't be afraid of allowing her creativity to flow. So I thought that there's no reason why I should be afraid of being creative either.
So I started the idea of my OC resembling a merpony. But I also wanted to stay true to the show's canon. After all, the only mention of either seaponies or merponies in Friendship is Magic is in the comics (which I don't read simply because I'm not a comic kind of person). Then I watched the episode "Trade Ya!", where we had a minor character who was in a wheelchair kind of cart. And I had thought to myself..."That's perfect! I can choose something traditional for my OC (since a unicorn with proper training can perform self-levitation magic to get in and out of her cart) and still be creative by having her look like a merpony!
That's because Mad Munchkins video was one of the things that inspired me to roll with a fox OC t obegin with^^. However, this video is more meant as a follow up. Maddies Video is about the lack of Non-Pony Ocs(Ty did a similiar video for the matter ;) ) While this video is about how to create one^^

I like the idea of physical challenges too. My main oc is a Pegasus and her friend is a blind Pegasus who can echolocate like some blind humans can.
My OC is a Wyvern. Although my form has a fish-like tail instead of a normal blade, so that I could have him being more amphibious, hunting fish in the sea vs hunting land creatures. I also figured it would make him a little more agreeable with ponies and other herbivores.
My idea is actually a Hippogriff, much like Silver quill, or should I just make a griffon? I'm unsure. Any clues? ( The OC you see for my profile pic is old and terrible, I was quite a lot stupider when I made it )
The real problem for me is actually DRAWING / designing the damn thing, that is my real problem, I don't have any fancy tools for doing so, like any sort of 100 dollar program or any sort of special gear for doing so. Any help on this? As I planned on having it by a hybrid of Pony, Zebra, and Griffon. ( I know three races, it should only be two, but I couldn't decide on either pony or zebra, so I chose 25% of both from one parent ) but anyways, could you give me a few tips with how I can create this? As I want to make it, but it would never come out without help. I'm a good story writer, but I'm terrible at art / drawing. ( my idea was a Hippogriff like silver quill with a fair amount of changes, to be honest, I don't watch the original show, so I have no idea about lore, or anything like that ) ( I just dislike the show, I only like the fan fictions and the OC's, and don't try to change my opinion on that ) Any ideas on those parts? ( Should I just use Silver quill's OC as a base and edit it from there? As I'm unsure if that would be stealing it, after all, it wouldn't look anything like Silver )
My OC of myself is my own made-up creature called a Falcat, a cat with griffin style wings, because I don't feel like I fit in with any three pony races. It doesn't have hooves, but it has a close relation to Griffins.
Fadestep is a cat who has a few different forms, dragon and half-human being a few. She doesn't have a pony form, so she uses her cat form in Equestria.
Considering a Hydra. Each head could represent a different side of an opinion (for example, one head found be in favor of pony generator whereas the other hates it). Probably won't go with it, but--- crap, I just realised someone might steal this idea... O well

I like non-pony OC's. They give off a bigger sense of diversity and creativity within the fandom. And as for my OC, I've decided to settle on a basilisk or another large serpent.
This is a great video, I like seeing you to working together. You raise some good points, especially on adapting existing species from MLP, how to use or change them. But I think in the end it all comes down to the delivery and the personality carring the character (for so example: I really enjoy seeing Maddys Mary Sue, because she managed to exegarate these personality traits so much, she becomes entertaining).
Just one thing I didn't really like in this video: Tricky, I love your redesign by Grey Silvermane, but you need to get that pose holding up the sign with your tail back. I now, it is basically an easy way to eddit in remarks after the fact, but I always found it to be indearing and unique. Having it floating over your head is anything but. It just comes of as unprofessional.
And since you asked about our own OCs: I made an outline for an OC living in Equestria. Bastion, she is an owlbear and an ambassador for her people living in Canterlot. She is very enthusiastic about her job, eager to get to know somebody new, although she rarely lets someone in, being in a strange country. Sometimes a little lazy and not quite at home in the big city, she still doesn't want to let anyone at home down, for disappoining anybody was her greatest fear after getting that position as an ambassador.
Well, that's a short summery, but this character will probably never really see the light of day, because as I said before, the most important thing for an OC which you create to represent yourself is that you have a personality to carry it, which I can't yet deliver.
But enough of my ramblings. With so many new episodes being dropped, I hope you two have the opportunity to work together on other projects soon :)
Your OC idea doesn't sound too shabby, jsut give it a try and remember an OC is not necessarly somethign that represents yourself. In theory every Fan Fic character is an OC ;)

Actually, creating characters is something I enjoy quite a lot. I like to play role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons or Das Schwarze Auge. So maybe I get Ponyfinder and homebrew my character there.

I love this video but i was wondering what your thought where on making your oc on a different format than the computer? For example hand drawn and like when Silver Quill sometimes does a plushie.
I personally think that is manageable. That being said while I think Silver Quills plushie videos are okay to get out some quick thoughts, I wouldn't like him to do them exclusively. Not to mention that he seemingly decided to drop them completely by now. There are also a lot of people that call that method lazy. However it's really depends on how much effort you want to put into it. Setting it up as some sort of puppet show actually osunds like a fun idea :P
Now using hand drawn images can be used pretty good as a style if done right. The best example i can think oif is doodle dabble though sadly she isn't active anymore
I stuck with three pony designs, Unicorn, Pegasus, and Earth Pony because I’m not that great of a artist who used a Pony Design App to make the one you see now.
But when I was designing them I used a Pony Blank model, traced it, and added my own designs to make it my own.
My Unicorn OC is a Flutter Pony Unicorn with big butterflies wings. The app had fairy wings but the color match with the body color, that did not look right.
My Pegasus OC is part Dragon with scales on her wing, except for the tip made of feathers, her belly, chest, and brim on the nose, she has a long dragon tail with a furry tip that she used to grab stuff, she has two antlers on her head, and she can breathe fire, she is also a few inches taller then normal ponies. They did not have any of that on the app that looked right.
The Earth Pony OC, looks like any other ponies, I just gave her the dream walking power like Luna when she sleeps, her names Dreamcatcher.
Believe me when I say I would love to have a Fox OC like Tricky but I work really hard on my pony designs, backstory, and their bonds with each other to let them go.
Now outside of the Brony fandom, yes my OC is a half-demon fox priestess.

Well if yo ucan come up with a good story, sure why not. But personally i would put Dinosaurs into the monster/beast category and you could simply roll with a wingless dragon, basically same result^^
Thank you. You do have a point with dinosaurs fit in the monsters category, but I think only carnivores would fit in that and not the herbivores, because both ponies and dinosaurs are herbivores and some dinosaurs are the same size as ponies, like the one i decided is Psittacosaurus.

Alright, I'll put in something that's a little bit less dickish.
On the subject of OC's, I think the only thing you need to worry about is how they appeal to the senses. You can choose any sort of species you want, hell, go crazy with it. But just make it plesant to look at.
i.e. Don't give it a color scheme that will make our eyes puke everywhere (Oversaturated colors are a no-no) Make it an easy design for people to draw if they so desire ( No wacky patterns or giant features or limbs that might obscure the design. I should show you my first OC design. Wish I still had the thing, it was horrendous) And if you wish, give it some clothes or distinguishing features (The changelings are a good example of characters you should consider putting something on)
It's really an easy thing to do. You just gotta ask yourself 'Would I like this if it wasn't mine? Does it appeal to my senses?' If the answer is no, then rework whatever you need to.
I think imma go with a changeling. Either shiny-winged or reformed. I've got a cool idea for the colors already so its mainly the body design that I'm debating. Any suggestions?

Great vid guys, you made some very valid points and brought up a lot of good ideas and advice. Speaking as someone with a non-pony oc I can agree with a lot of your guys' ideas, and as exotic as púcas are, I could picture them fitting in with the diverse collection of species the show has offered. Since the show takes a lot of inspiration from mythologies around the world, it's rather fitting my oc's species comes from old Celtic mythos. I hadn't even heard of púcas until about 2 years ago when I was in a play called "Harvey" at a community theater. The show vaguely describes what púcas are and briefly explains that the title character is an invisible 6-foot-tall rabbit that only appears to certain people. The idea of a rabbit creature like that intrigued me and when I researched púcas further, I learned that they took other forms such as goats, wolves, and horses depending on the legend. That was when I knew I had to make my oc a púca.
After a few months of experimenting and tinkering, I finally settled on a look I liked and even then I've still gone back and made minor changes here and there. I liked the concept of having a shapeshifter oc so I took some slight inspiration from Discord while retaining the feel of a different species. As bizarre as a half-blue, half tan horse-like creature with oversized rabbit ears and paws, and a wolf tail is, I love it and I think it represents me pretty well. Most people would probably take offence to comments like "your oc looks weird" but I consider "weird" a compliment rather than an insult.
oh yeah, I like your OC ;). It's quite creative and i think mystical beast like this rather interesting. And a weird look can indeed work rather well if you are going for one on purpose, it's basically the Discord clause XD

1. as usual, story matters the most.
2. sometimes an OC might not be non-pony, but rather just some special race of ponies. Among what I have, I have a race called "tricorn" which is kinda a unicorn with a pair of square horns. They are OP for sure, but it's just because they were created as war machines. So... Writing backstory for them is quite challenging, but at least the result is something really unique. XD
3. some people just bring their, for example, furry OC into the fandom and we just assume that his OC is in the MLP universe (for silly reasons). Well, the point is, just use whatever you like and make a good story out of it is OK. As for what they come from, well, my OC might not even come from MLP universe. So... whatever reasonable is okay.
(I also have OCs that is from MLP universe but fell into rift or something and ended up settle down in other universes.)
4. the point is, it's beter let the OC fun to be interacted with. Sometimes maybe even just break the 4th wall. I sometimes would say that, I'll glue a horn on some people's OC (usually pegasus), while drawing a horn on the pic of the OC and post it out. This joke works quite good for at least once, so... It's okay, I guess. Of course, there's no good abusing jokes, but when not abusing it, it's fun.
I have a Draconequus/pony-hybrid OC named Midnight Wonder. She comes from a land outside of Equestria where Draconequuses . . . Draconequuai . . . Dracula . . . whatever the plural for Draconequus is, are rare but not limited to one. I chose to make her half-pony for the same reason Silver Quill made his OC half-pony: to have a Cutie Mark. I really wanted my OC to have a Cutie Mark so I made her half-pony. But that's pretty much the only pony thing about her appearance. Well, that and how tiny she is. She's pretty much the same size as Lightning Bliss. If you're wondering why I chose a Draconequus, it's because I really couldn't decide on what kind of pony would be best for her and I just found the idea of a Draconequus to be a really good match. She's defiantly not your average "pony" as she's pretty quirky and tends to be a bit more outlandish than ponies. Not that she goes around spreading chaos wherever she pleases, but just having a wild imagination that accidently becomes part of reality every so often. Other than that, she's actually pretty quiet, shy, and reserved. But friendly and open hearted nevertheless. I know a lot of people are gonna make jokes about her being the offspring of Fluttershy and Discord (other than the fact that so many already have) as she really does seem to be such. However, that is not the case. She just has a resemblance to Fluttershy (character wise) with powers like Discord (but much less under control). She also has pony magic in her since she is, as mentioned before, half-pony. So she can learn several spells and actually has a real knack for it. She just needs to learn to control her magic before she can ever hope to become a master. I've made sure to give her plenty of realistic flaws without making her helpless yet still in need of help from time to time. I really hope people like her and won't be too harsh about her. What do you guys think?

Anyway, I have always loved unicorns before even Gen 1 of MLP happened so it was a no brainer for me and I love them with wings anyway. In the ended I picked an alicorn though because of my life experiences.
I was actually thinking of creating 2 non-pony OCs as well, companions for my Alicorn OC because she has lived for a very long time and has always craved companionship since where she's originally from, she was rejected (I am still working out the kinks of her back story). But one is a Dragon and the other is a Winged lion. When I was younger I always loved seeing dragons, unicorns, and lions together. They just always seemed to fit.

My main characters tend to change form based on their location. He started as a Castlevania Dhampyr. many many years ago, then turned into a Mobian Fox, has been a Dragon, and now has a pony form he uses. Aside from him I do like to make native to world charactets as well following the logic of Jet Li's 'The One', making different versions of my self based on location and time period the story is set in.

Kind of the same thing that allowed Twilight to venture to Canterlot high but obviously a different start point. Thank you, this will probably help alot once real life clears up a bit and I can work on my Manticore OC. Yeah, I plan to make its looks less cannon to the show's Manticore, because, honestly, I think the show's version looks kinda ugly >.<
But since you guys seem to know what you're doing, could you offer me any tips? I'm partway done with the backstory, but the design worries me more than I'm used to (When I was going through my pony OC prototypes, design wasn't a big problem).

My oc is not technically a pony, it's a dragon pony hybrid, but what makes her a bit special is that she doesn't look like a hybrid. She looks like a pony with an unusual tail. She actually gets the tail from her dragon part, and she has spikes on her hoofs, well not really spikes, she also has sharp like ears, and sharp teeth, and also a curved horn. So, yeah, XD and feedback?

My OC is a bat pony with ultramarine fur and a brown tail and mane. He also have an Afro airstyle and wear glasses. Green lizard eyes.
Okay so after watching this video I have to express my opinion and say that I too also like the idea of non pony OC's because like tynadaga said it's a great way to travel outside the herd and really express what truly represents you. I have a Griffin as my OC. However I originally had a pony OC that went to a batpony but I felt that wasn't really all that unique and didn't represent me well. so after years of changing his design I finally went with griffin. this allowed me to be more unique than the rest of my friends and I felt like it represented me very well because I can have a temper, especially when it comes to protecting my friends and family.

Im currently designing and creating a character i would like to make a fanfiction on since i would like to show my interpretation of some hidden historical events in equestrian and pre-equestrian history with a species we dont know much about but was still introduced in the show.
I wanted a character that was like a secret muse for a lot of struggling writers and was like a guardian of a secret library in equestria and beyond and i decided to go with a sphinx/kirin hybrid. Originally I was think of a draconequs but decided against it since thats a little too obvious and sphinxes are pretty cool in concept and more fitting. Plus with the inclusion of kirin DNA it would be a fun mixture.
Since we dont know anything about sphinxes in canon to the show and barely anything about kirin culture.
So I am putting it upon myself to make my own interpretation on how at least the sphinx culture would be like. And their main core personalities besides the outliers.
Exploring kirin and sphinx culture and abilities and how they could effect Equestria during Princess Twilights reign now that creatures are integrating more and more in pony society and is more openly accepted.
It'll be a fun concept and fun project to work on. This OC will not be my main one but its still fun to work on this.
There are plenty of other myths in the world to base an OC off of. For example, I've used such various African animals as the Gazelle, Giraffe, Okapi, and Rhino as the basis of OCs. I've even used the African unicorn called the Abada (which appears to have a second smaller horn on it's nose and a lion-like tail). Unfortunately, I have no real artistic talent to draw them. However, there are some mythical beasts that seem to defy description such as the eight legged Sleipnir and the seven headed/winged Uchchaihshravas. The real Pegasus is a divine beast and one of a kind. So are Sleipnir and Uchchaihshravas. Very few have ever drawn those in any convincing way let alone made an OC based on one. Is there any way to make such a character without being Mary Sue?
Well the trick would be to turn Sleipnir and Uchchaihshravas into Ponytribes (or Horsetribes, we saw horses from Saddlearabia so why not^^) that jsut happen to have 8 legs or 7 heads that can fly. Sure both of them can fly without wings but the main problem with those two is mroe that they would look rather odd. Just keep in mind that pegasus is in theory divine as well, so as long a creature isn't too powerful there is no problem with turning it into it's own race

Hm, I'm almost considering replacing my current moth pony with a redesign of my old "HalfChangeling"... not that I know any good way to design a half pony, half changeling. He was originally just a pony base with a bunch of changeling features grafted onto it, I need something a tad more creative (and visually appealing) than that. There's just only so many ways to make a character sometimes, y'know?
Is it alright my character is a raccoon with sorta electric powers.. Given by One of my OCs August who is a same species as discord.. Wait a minute electric powers is too much scratch that. 😅

What would be suggested in deciding what species to do for a non pony OC?
Why be normal... When you can be non normal, a lot of people pass on other non pony OCs (probably because there are more bases but...) When I turned a small character out of a pony into a " bug pony" it makes me and my character a lot more interesting and because she doesn't have a cutie mark. But I look forward to them looking at your advice and sucking it in like I do. Great job! I hope you have room for another sub!!

I have a Pantheran as my main (the cat creature, like Capper)
Her name is Kieran (meaning Little, dark one) She is black with one red and one green eye.
She is a Master thief, who mostly only steals what she really needs, but if given a job with the right price, she will steal whatever needed.
She can be quite Naive and get distracted easily, due to the cat side of her, but she is very street smart
My main OC is a Pegasus but Im the type who just keeps getting ideas. I have a blind Pegasus, a unicorn I’m still trying to find a story for and maybe an earth pony. Also I’m creating one that’s a zebra pony hybrid.
You didn’t touch on hippogriffs. Must’ve been before the movie. I love the hippogriff oc idea and still toy with making one of my unicorn OCs, Crystal Blue, a hippogriff.
I also would love a Quetzalcoatl based character with azhuatl being there. I’m a Quetzalcoatlus pterosaur fan girl so it’d be awesome.
Also there was a kelpie in the comics. That would be interesting for an oc. The kelpies had awesome designs. There’s an abada too. One of the kelpies had a aquatic body and was evil but the others weren’t. They had dogs and other creatures too. And we can thank the movie for really opening things up as well. Cats, parrots, so many weird Klugetown creatures.
I wish the fandom was still as active now as a few years ago. We’d see soooo many more OC varieties I bet.

Hey Tyandaga. If you remember me then you have propably noticed that I have changed my oc from a unicorn to a bat pony, this is becayse I actually love the dark theme abd I am a little dark my self. The reason for the change is that O couldn't guite relate to the unicorn, and I love the thought of flying in the night sky, so I thought why not change it and I did. I kept the first name "Shadow" and changed the last one to "Fire"

My go to OC is actually a Diet Coke colored mule named Overnight. I actually really like donkeys and mules irl, and found them a little disrespected in the show. Because mules and donkeys aren't interchangeable like in the show (since mules are actually half horse/pony) I wanted to make Overnight more like a real mule. Alot of my ideas for him are about breaking expectations

I am currently in works of creating my oc but this is what I am thinking, since I am incredibly in love with kaiju (Godzilla, mothra, kong, gamera, etc) and venom (from marvel) I am thinking of a Godzilla like creature, but with some venom characteristics (like the eyes, teeth, attitude) and I want to mix the two to make a great new unique character, and I’ll try to incorporate Godzilla abilities into my character like atomic breath etc, but I’ll probably just use my breath as some type of magic instead since it works better with the world of mlp

My OC is a were pony. A half pony, half wolf hybrid also called a lycan. Alicorn son of luna. I do not mind the idea of none pony OC's. but I prefer when someone has a reason for it.
A example is how My OC is a werepony because even in the brony kingdom I feel like a outside while trying to fit in. I would have choosen a changling OC but I like the night and I as a person respect loyalty. A wolf just seems to fit. And a lycan would let my OC be able to transform into a pony while still being a wolf OC and be in hiding.
My OC is the son of luna but I did even that for a reason. In my fanfic my OC loses his temper with twilight and attacks all of equestria. After Celestia has to intervene to stop him because he is so OP, Celestia removes my OC's Alicorn powers leaving him as just a earth style lycan. This reflects a event in my life where I fell from grace. And as part of that he constantly sees the nightmare version of himself mocking him for being weak. Which only makes himself suffer even more.
Then most of my fan fiction is of my oc getting better not just mentally but also trying to get his alicorn powers back while trying to fight to be pack leader again.

You are a pony no matter how you look at it but not just a regular earth pony. It begs the question: if you father was a bat (are we talking about an actual bat or a bat pony?) and your mother was a pegasus, where did you get the lion tail(because without the other features it is just the tail of a lion, rather popular within the fandom though) and especially where did you get the fire and water powers? Pony biology doesn't make much sense, still you have to get those traits somewhere.

My guess is to keep the designs as simple as possible. I think that was one core idea when they designed the characters back in the day. It was all about easy to draw stuff :P
I personally like to see some different horse designs as well aside from the usual, so i would say go for it :P I think Mad Munchkin based her Pony OC on a Shetland Pony, but not sure about it
