- Very unfortunate visit to Houtbay Harbor while filming for the channel today.
Started off with a phone call to a seal rescue unit due to its injuries.
Later on, as we were filming, we were on the verge of being assaulted for not giving into extortion.
We were accosted by a gang wanting money for filming a seal, and told it's their job and they can resort to robbing instead.
We were told to stop filming by them.
It's a public area, and no wildlife belongs to a gang.
As you will see, cameras are visible but no security....only at different locations.
Later on, we take a look at the state of Harbor buildings and sunken boats dotted about.
The videos are filmed as they present themselves..
I strongly suggest you walk in numbers and keep valuables away.
There position in life is no excuse to resort to this behavior on individuals going about there lives.
This isn't good for a tourist experience.
Thank you for reporting the injured seal. Hout Bay so pretty . sad about the underlying crime and threat . stay safe and follow your instincts

Yep, the place has become a dump, a lot of people said they avoid the area now - sad because the shop owners suffer.

It was very unfortunate today.
I have in the past also had intimidation as today by parking guards, and a glass bottle thrown in my direction after refusing money....
Very Intimidating.

One was whistling to me from 100 meters away.
Summoning me like a dog to pay.....

I relayed the same sentiments to the security and Mariners Warf Management.
So far from what I've gathered, you on your own out there.....
Very unfortunate.
There's a sign at entrance stating it's illegal to feed seals too..
I've had a glass bottle thrown at .e next to the cannons. Time before last and a car guard act aggressive toward me. It's an an aggressive place in my past few experiences.
So decided this has to be shown.

I also reported the seal being fed by a man , as a tourist attraction to security at hout bay harbour who said it must be reported to SAPS .
I also reported to SPCA at the time.

One can only defend oneself when an asset has occurred UNFORTUNATELY.
Security at one establishment has said a nother guard had been stabbed before.
Also another fact is they all reside in same community, so it's difficult for them, regarding retaliation on them selves and family.
So at roots level.
A BIG problem for you and me alike.

Yes I was innocently filming and was confronted by them on entry as seen in video ...
I will not have myself and wife be intimidated or harassed by anyone, no matter there position in life.
I have given and still do to persons who found themselves in positions with no money, etc.
But I will not be told to pay.....
I know your frustration, try refraimng from ymsp. Lol.

Yes, very unfortunate.
Crime and Thuggery is a serious issue to tourism, as seen in video.
No one to assist or accountable....
When a tourist is fatally attacked, perhaps there will be interest, as is the pending case of a young German visitor, who is yet to be found.....

Hout bay harbour in spring and off season can be a bit quiet the blogger was duly warned to be vigilant the seals are often in that spot good of him to report the seal looked like he had a few grazes in peak season the larger bull seals are used to take pictures with the tourists unfortunately everywhere you go in Cape Town there is Aject poverty you need to know how to deal with certain individuals that frequent the bay you will always have the less fortunate asking for money mainly kids it's best just to leave them and carry on without any confrontation or aggravation unless you are approached by certain individuals that might try to rob you but as was clearly visible there was security I have lived in Cape Town my entire life and I been to Hout Bay on many occasions in and out of season because I am fully aware at all times of the environment I am in I have never had any problems nor have I ever been robbed

Unfortunately, no security was at the scene of being confronted and also harassed.
Only at another side of Harbor.
And wasn't duly warned to be vigilant.
If you listen, the one made mention of this is why you people get robbed.
No knowledge of a seal or anyone extorting persons for money on arrival whilst filming.
The camera recorded all and sundry.
When someone approaches with a hand in your face and is trying to stop you filming.
It's an act of aggression of which one can defend yourself, irrespective of their position in life.
It's my instinct to protect injured animals, hence phoning the seal rescue. Also, protecting , wife, and our property is an instinct.
I have traveled Africa Extensively and SE Asia and Europe.
I've seen poverty on various forms.
I won't stand to be intimidated by those or them who defend them.
This behavior stops tourism, stops opportunities for jobs, and allows for crime to exist.
It also states it's an offense to feed the Seals at entrance of Harbor.

you should have reported them them at SAPS, geez they raised the seal the animal is older than them ,you should not be intimidated by them. im local residing in Hout Bay ,persons had been arrested before for doing what they do
I have phoned 3 various security companies regarding the cameras..I was told by one from Cape Town City he won't help me. He only talks to a detective.....
So I've sent to Mayor, who was helping the community on the beach yesterday...same day.

@@fullbucketlist777 the security is of no use ,but persons has been arrested for feeding the seals ,You should see Pumla the harbour master and report the matter to DFFE (department forestry fisheries -foreshore) the cameras is not working 3 years ago the place was supposed to be revived but due to corruption its in the state that it is now

I am however not intimidated.
I will as in video stand up to thugs and those harassing me and being provocative.
I had no intent on filming any of them on entry ad you can see.
I was accosted on entry and a lady infront of us later as we left.
Very unfortunate.
The word Rob was mentioned twice to me on camera.

@@fullbucketlist777 Sure that's their intimidation tactics ,however Hout Bay do offer more if you would like a walk around sentinel mountain I would gladly assist you with a friend (Local tour guide ) to do more filming of what people can only observe from the seal island trips

We visit often and love Houtbay.
It's very unfortunate that the Harbor is failing and to a degree unsafe.
My channel has many videos taken at Houtbay, I have contacted the Litchenstein Case to undertake a video but they declined.
Which was unfortunate.
Would be a great video. I'm sure.

In those unsuspected moments, one has to chose to fight or flight....
I am not suggesting they had knives, but a security officer told me his colleague was stabbed in the area.
On leaving, you can see the one who first accosted me following a vulnerable lady on her own before sending me off with his thoughts of the day.
Never retaliate physically unless you are physically approached.
