I did something similar with my gsd puppy when I first brought him home. I sat on the floor and fed him his whole dinner like this out of hand for like a week in order to bond, but only let him eat when he was calm and gentle. He is 5 months old now, and even though he is a rowdy mess he is super gentle about taking treats, never whines, begs, or jumps up for food, and I can take food out of his mouth without him fussing. Dogs need to know that you SHARE food with them willingly. They don't need to steal, beg, or fight for it.

Hi Duke, I watched this yesterday and have used your technique with our five-month-old Mastiff x Great Dane. It worked so well - thank you! I am having some problems with receiving your emails - I can't find them in the inbox or in junk. Cheers, Sally

Nice :) You should take a look at Susan Garrets "It's your choice" training.. That reminds me a little bit of this.she has some cool training stuff to. I always find it inspiring to watch other trainers and see what they do.. it all boils down to: CHOICE and using their brain.. . A dog that are allowed to choose by thinking will be a confident and happy dog.. LOVE the GSD you have there.. What a smart and "keen to work" dog.. :) i have a couple of dogs that has the same attitude towards work and that is wonderful and so much fun to be around and train them :) Best breed there is - espc. the working lines. Greetings from Norway ;)

I dont get it. Do you not want a pushy dog that wants to work? Excuse my ignorance im still learning here. I would have thought that a pushy dog was easier to train?

Yes we want ignition / drive and desire. Yes we want the dog hungry and motivated to play, to put out and try hard but the dog can maintain high drive or a positive state and be clear headed and not be pushy or rude. Teach the dog to think deeply first on how to get its advantage then overlay pressure later.
