And somewhere in the distance, Liam O'Brien was just shaking his fist and raging at the heavens seeing his husband so shamelessly flirt with Stephen. (I mean, I can't blame him - Stephen is handsome, RIDICULOUSLY intelligent, well-educated, and a nerd of the finest water.)
Meh, it was cringey and creepy. At one point even Stephen, the Man Who Won TV, the one who is famous for being able to make everyone around him look good, seemed a bit uncomfortable. Don't get me wrong, I'm a critter and still a big fan of Sam Riegel. I won't hold one mistake against him, but... To me, it just seemed like that one dude who makes a pass at a girl who isn't interested, then either continues or demands she explain why she isn't interested.
I love watching Stephen’s face light up when Ashley, Sam and Marisha begin role playing…he’s so in his element. I hope he gets to do it again but with the whole cast for a full session, with battle maps. It would be so cool!
I imagine that we'll have to wait until after he gives up hosting the Late Show. I can't imagine Stephen ever getting the time to drop a day to do a full Critical Role show otherwise. Even when he's on hiatus, he'd be researching, writing, promoting etc and trying to slip in some recreation time. I'm sure he'd love it though and the full cast would love roleplaying with him.
I think it could happen like a 3 episode guest spot. Problem is, I think the late Show is in new York isn't it? So that's basically impossible unfortunately. But I bet he'd crap himself over the experience of a full play in their studio.
Why not have CR do a traveling show? They could go on tour and game in front of big crowds --- the live energy would be insane --- they could stop in NYC and have Stephen drop by for a session!
I love how Matt takes certain courtesies with certain guests. When Sam asked if he could uncanny dodge and Matt casually asks him if he has uncanny dodge as an ability, promoting Colbert to have a look at his abilities to see if he has anything that would interact with the situation. He really is an amazing person =-)
Agreed! He's never condescending or impatient, always knows how to reach his players regardless of skill level (or how recent the last time they'd played). I was noticing how he subtly changed how he said things, like after Stephen used the older way of describing dice, as in "2 die 6" instead of "2d6" and Matt just rolled with it, saying it the same way he did. You can really tell how much he loves his job, and takes great joy from seeing his players swept up in the magic of D&D :)
@@sevans8784 To be fair, if someone corrects you for saying the word an acronym is taking the place of, especially when it is the same number of syllables so shortening it saves you absolutely nothing, they're probably an idiot. Dee vs Die is an incredibly mundane hill to die upon.
@@TheFallingFlamingo That's a very good point, I hadn't thought of it that way. So it's not big sacrifice or anything, but I guess I can still appreciate that he's used to saying it one way, so it's more likely to roll of the tongue for him, but he changed it slightly to make more sense to the person he's talking to.
@@demago3265 I'm definitely not a bot. Idk about the others. What you said was a great call back! I had TOTALLY forgotten that Nott had thought Fjord would take that vow. But yeah...it all makes sense now, retroactively. Hilarious.

@@DoremiFasolatido1979 it IS pretty great. @@aaron58107 I would probably look at one of their one-shot adventures on twitch or their youtube channel. If you like it you can choose one of the campaigns and start from the beginning. Campaign 2 is still my personal favorite (the Colbert episode featured three of the characters from that campaign.), so that's what I would recommend, but all three are a little bit different in style and theme, so you might get hooked on one of the others instead. Campaign 1 starts "in the middle" of an adventure since this is when they took their home game online... And the production quality has improved immensely since those early days, if that is something you care about. Some say to start at episode 25-ish, if I remember correctly (someone might jump in and correct me if I'm off an episode or two) to begin with a new chapter of the story so to speak, and skip some of the rough spots in the beginning - it took a few episodes for them to find their sea legs, much more cross talk and things of that nature in the first episodes. It has it's own charm, but maybe the charm comes from either being there with them live when it happened or by knowing what they have become and who they are as people, so it may not appeal to a new watcher - depending on preferences of course.
Fans of The Late Show: "One and a half hours with Stephen? That's like more than a double episode!" Critters: "Ummm... that's not even half an episode, my dude..."
always blown away by Mercer's skills as a DM, but the way he is able to direct the table and keep them from getting off track is beautiful. I mean his story telling is amazing, but the subtle way he just made the storm sound effect and everyone immediately hands the story back to him from the group discussion was beautiful!
Not to mention riding and adapting to Stephen's 'reality checking for inconsistent plot holes' and making it part of the story (gargoyles only hear sound). Great DMs take the players' comments or ideas and make them the new truth in the world to both keep things consistent and to validate the players.
Also funny Sam telling Stephen how to calculate Initiative, then Sam goes on to say he got a 2 on his Initiative roll which isn't possible since he has a +4 Dex. So he told Stephen "roll a d20 and add you Initiative modifier" then goes on to roll a d20 and not add his own Initiative modifier lol.
6:30 Matt surely knows the name of the books but he doesn't interrupt on purpose, I love that. Well he got nothing to prove to anyone obviously but I don't know, its kinda cute to see that face.
That’s hard for a lot of people to do, not interrupting when they know the answer. You have to read the person to know if they’re hoping for help or want to find the answer themselves. I think Matt made the right call!
@@PabloNevares I disagree I think Stephen was really sinking and looking for a line, but Matt doesn't like to step on toes which is completely OK. But I think he could've used Matt's help
The book name wasn't the point Stephen was enthusiastically telling his story and Matt just let it ride to avoid interrupting him and his thought process.
The first Red Nose Day video was the first time I heard about Critical Role. Matt’s story telling really captured me. Now, however many years later, I have seen literally every thing on the CR channel, including all the one shots and Talks Machina.
i missed all the mighty nein so much, but i didn’t realize how much i missed NOTT and her chaotic energy until now....MVP for the HDYWTDT, flirting w jack, and getting that hideous laughter in, honestly. 🤣
I’m hoping that this popularity allows Stephen to get to do more stuff like this for longer. Seeing his pure happiness existing with other dorks is so wholesome

@@Sammie1053 its at least easier now that its all prerecorded so they dont have to worry about like thursday night specific recording times. but its so unlikely
A one shot would be better, since the focus should be on story, not a celebrity guest, in a campaign. I actually would love to see the Darrington Brigade characters once again for this purpose.
I think the Darrington Brigade would be a perfect group of characters for celebrity guests to play one shots with, because they are not part of a campaign so watching the one shots with them would be 100% spoiler free.
as someone still watching C2 this was spoiler free as far as I could tell other than character descriptions (and maybe wings?). It felt like it took place in a "time apart" from the events of C2 so I didn't feel like anything was spoiled. If there were some subtle things, I didn't pick up on them.
Masterful DMing again. Do we expect anything less? Mid combat turn (their first turn) Stephen's gets light heartingly frustrated at the gargoyles reacting to sound not sight. Then Matt describes the Gargoyles as having vacant holes for eyes and their behavior is more based on listening. Just... amazing how invested Matt gets in making sure someone is having a good time when he's the head of the table.
@@ccloudleaf really liked the way he handled Tashas hideous laughter spell too. By the book it would have immediately made her go prone but he turned it into a layup for Colbert to have a cool moment.
Matt is incredible. He’s an excellent story teller but also very gentle with newcomers or old timers like Stephen who haven’t played in a long time. I love him so much.
All choices would have been fine, especially seeing Colbert interact with Nott is a delight. With Vox Machina being a cartoon now it's for the best since well, in that case Stephen would be playing the only D&D character that's NOT in an animated series. On the other hand, Vox machina is all closer to the classic D&D experience perhaps that Stephen is familiar with. Then again seeing him interact with Laudna would have been amazing too. While I like Keyleth and Beau too, Mareesha's performance of Laudna is next level.
@@willemverheij3412 him interacting with Jester, Cad or Caleb would have been interesting too. I’d be interested to see how Fjord would come into play too.

Is it bad that I want more? This is longer, yes, but I want an even longer one. Like, 3.5 hours. Damn, Steven is such a great player and addition to the cast. It's like he's always been there.
Agreed. Stephen isn't used to playing crit role style. He's very old school DND. The more he played the more he started to adapt and show his own phenomenal ability to ad lib and role play. Give Colbert a week with these guys and he would blow our socks off
Indeed. I looked at the runtime and was happy that he got to play longer this time. And then it was over in the blink of an eye. An hour more wouldn't have hurt.
It's incredible to see how invested Stephen Colbert is in the story right out the gate. So awesome. Also can we just appreciate how Sam gets along with absolutely everyone? Like what a charismatic man.
Am I the only person who's first though was "Are they going to play it on Twitch to raise money for something?" Clearly I've been spoiled by people making great fund raising opportunities through D&D.
Aside from being generally fun to watch, this episode is also a great example of what a bite-sized one-shot can be for when you don't have a lot of time to play.
LOL I did not catch that that was the reference, should have realized. when they said let's not get demonetized I thought the concern was copyright infringement, not contraband lol
3 years ago I had never seen a game of d&d played until I watched the first RND. I’m rewatching this while making a map for tomorrows session I’m running. Love the great Colbert and Mercer
LMAO not the first time it's happened. In Campaign 1, Liam is playing a Rogue named Vax'ildan and I think he got a 34 on a stealth check or something and Matt said something like, "You've stealthed so well that you've gone into the next campaign," I can't remember the exact quote. XD
I'm only about halfway through campaign 2, but twice so far Nott has rolled a Nat 20 on Stealth while Jester has Pass Without A Trace up and has got a 43 on Stealth
I know they have history but the level of calm and collected Matt is this whole time with STEVEN COLBERT sitting right there at his table is amazing! Top notch from everyone!
Seeing an old school geek playing new stuff is always good, but it being Colbert made it special. Plus, the only thing I thought was lame about his previous one-shot with Mercer was that it was only the two of them, so the RP was too low. AND the CR team dusted off their Mighty Nein characters? This was nerd GOLD. A hearty thank you to everyone involved in making this!
This is amazing, thank you all so much for this! I found out about Critical Role and D&D from Stephen and Matt’s first Red Nose Day video, and I’ve been DMing my group for the last 2 years. Not well mind you, but I try.
Getting stephen to play dnd is such a gift to everyone involved. Thank all who participated to make this and the one prior happen. I hope for many more.
I absolutely love that old school energy Stephen brings to the table. Right out of the gate he's talking about Michael Moorcock and geeking out about Sting. This guy is the O-est of G's. So awesome that he gets to go back to the Tomb of Horrors and play AD&D with his high school buddies again!
Yes! I’m so glad Colbert is back! Watching him play last time around is actually how I was first introduced to CR. Now, I’m a regular but whenever I’m trying to explain how D&D is run well to non-players, I refer them to the first rednose day video. Matt just does a masterful job of following the rules close enough while stretching some to allow Stephen to enjoy his time and wet his appetite for more.
I love how they made the short sword with a bigger hilt, so it would give the illusion on camera that the actor was smaller, like a hobbit, when they held it with two hands ^~^
I remember when Matt did the one one one DnD session with Stephen, but never in a million years would I have thought that he would have come on for a full group one shot! This is so cool!
I LOVE how delighted and captivated Stephen is the entire time. You can just tell this brings out his inner child and it's heart warming. Total OG D&D player; I'd love to play D&D with him. Also Stephen catches the phrase "cheese almost" from Matt. I love how he catches those tiny details.
I kinda wish they'd make this a semi-regular gig. Maybe twice or three times a year, get together and do another little one shot with Steven and some of the crew? It'd be cool

I love watching Stephen’s face light up when Ashley, Sam and Marisha begin role playing…he’s so in his element. I hope he gets to do it again but with the whole cast for a full session, with battle maps. It would be so cool!
Imagine him sitting in on a few episodes like some guests have.
its so wholesome to watch him. you can see this is special to him and not "just work"
I imagine that we'll have to wait until after he gives up hosting the Late Show.
Only Stephen Colbert can get away with calling Marisha "Mareesha" and get her to agree.
I noticed that too!
lmao just saw that
Honestly, Stephen Colbert could call me Flimflam, and I'd go, "YUP!" AND EXCITEDLY PLAY.
If he wants to quit the Late Show to become a regular cast member, I would be okay with that.
He brought *Sting*, and she got to brandish it... People will put up with an awful lot for that, but being Stephen Colbert also helps?

Having only really seen the Stephen Colbert clips - do you have any recommendations of where I should start/ how you might hook someone on the show?
Jack - "And why are you guys seeking her again?"
Beau - "Because she sucks"
I mean, yeah that sounds like Beau, i believe her XDD
Yasha: “Yeah… she’s just the worst. And we do love a mission of vengeance!”

Only critters would look at the runtime and be like "only 1-1/2 hours?" 😄
Fans of The Late Show: "One and a half hours with Stephen? That's like more than a double episode!"
Critters: "Ummm... that's not even half an episode, my dude..."
And to think the long ones go for five hours… those ones often end in epic combats too.
To be fair, 1.5 hours ISN'T long enough. I play in a campaign where our sessions are 2 hours long and that's nowhere near long enough.
Could you imagine an episode of critical role ONLY being 1.5 hours long? The fans would riot
saw another show saying they ran long at 2h30m and got confused…that’s a short episode for me…lol…
always blown away by Mercer's skills as a DM, but the way he is able to direct the table and keep them from getting off track is beautiful.

Masterful DMing again. Do we expect anything less? Mid combat turn (their first turn) Stephen's gets light heartingly frustrated at the gargoyles reacting to sound not sight. I love how you can actively see Matt seeing the scenery in his mind's eye. Also, I really missed Nott.
I miss The Mighty Nein every day and this one-shot gave me all the warm-fuzzies. 🥺
Omg me too!!! What's a favorite M9 moment for you?
@@samsontelbate7634 I miss them too! One of my favourite small moments that I don't see talked about much but never fails to crack me up is the Moorbounders and Seeming....when Yasha gets worried that they will get killed when the go back to town 😆😆😆
@@sunshine_pond7951 omg I forgot about that one. ONE of mine is when they get greedy with the teleportation circles and get banned from each one! 🤣🤣🤣
@@sunshine_pond7951 who's your favorite movie character???
@@samsontelbate7634 I love the entire campaign, so that is very hard. By episode 97, The Fancy and the Fooled, is my favorite Critical Role episode ever, so...probably moments from that.
For all the people who seem out of the loop:
1. This is being broadcasted on the last Thursday of the month, which would otherwise have been dark. So no, you're not missing a critical role episode of the main campaign because of this.
2. This has been done for red nose day to raise money to end child poverty.
3. Matt did a similar one shot with just Stephen for the 2019 red nose day. Then it was just Matt and Stephen.
Was there a C3 episode posted this Thursday? Or will it be this Friday night?
@@lukeamparo6586 As OP already said, each of the last Thursdays of the months are usually dark, OR have one-shot games like this. So no, there was no main C3 episode last night and this aired instead of that.
@@David_Blake91 thanks
My face hurts from smile laughing through this whole episode. What a great run. And THE sting?! What a massive flex!
Having only seen the pre-amble (so I have no clue how the actual gaming goes yet), I have to say - I mean, I love Stephen on any day. But I LOVE geeking-out Stephen! It's like he finally gets to be himself fully :D It's so lovely! Thanks for this!
The Nein sitting around a campfire eating.
Nott: This sandwich is great Jack. It's delicious. You're an amazing cook.
Jack: Yes but I lost my dignity.
Beau: Come on man.
Yasha: Yea it's not-
Jack: D I G N I T Y!
Honor!!
