I am two years late to this comment obviously lmao, but music does teach us a lot! About ourselves and the world and society and internal struggles and culture etc. but I am going to have to disagree with your first statement about it being one of the most basic things in life. I get what you’re trying to say and maybe it just wasn’t the best way to say it because music is one of the more complex things we have in life. It is art in its truest form. We wouldn’t have it if for one, we didn’t have amazing talented musicians who can expertly play each instrument used in a song. Without a melody, unique sounds to fit a project and its vibes, etc. none of this would exist. It’s one thing to pick up an instrument and learn how to play songs, but something entirely else when it comes to songwriting. Same goes for lyrics and harmonies. Harmonies need to be thought out to match the melody of the song or else it would just sound so off and terrible. And of course the lyrics are the main factor in storytelling. It’s literal poetry. Unless someone uses repetitive basic wording, that’s just lazy to me. Halsey is very good at lyricism. It’s poetry. It’s thought provoking. It strikes a chord with anyone who can relate to a certain situation. It can be life saving. The delivery as well is so important to achieve because it adds a unique element for the song to stand out and give a bigger impact to a set of lyrics. Music is not one of the most basic things in life. We are lucky to have music in life. We are lucky to have witnessed evolution and growth in music over time. We are lucky to have a complex art form unique to ourselves, as individuals and groups with a similar likeness.
Every time I think I've reached peak admiration for Halsey, some or other thing makes me fall even more. This song is one of the absolute best Halsey has ever given us.
