@@Channelisgone8282 This is my interpretation and is in no way shape or form reflective of Halsey's personal feelings or personal interpretation of the song. You will need to actually look to Halsey for their perspective. I will say that I have looked for Halsey's interpretation of these lyrics on the internet and most sites talk about Halsey's album as a whole and the experiences that created it and not this individual song. Songs and music in general mean different things to different people. This is why interpretations may change person to person. From my (a linguists) perspective: "Boys will be boys" has commonly been used to 'alleviate' boys of their actions. When boys/men pull pigtails, push girls on school grounds because they 'like-like' that girl, or even cat call it is commonly written off as "boys will be boys" essentially taking blame for actions from boys/men who conducted said actions and placing it onto the girls/women who received the action. When young boys hear this as children they learn quickly that they are not responsible for their actions; the girls are by being the source of their feelings that generated the action. I personally believe that there is also an element of toxic masculinity at play here that influences people to teach these boys (consciously or subconsciously) that they need to bottle up their feelings and not to express them at all. *TRIGGER WARNING: sexual assault and rape mentioning from an educational, societal, standpoint* stay safe :-) This causes a shit load of problems that ripple out into everyday life. When boys don't take responsibility for their actions as boys then they are unable to take responsibility for their actions as men. This leads to more aggressive actions on the side of men against women. We see this by men claiming that what a woman was wearing was provocative and that, therefore, she was deserving of his actions against her. This can be anything from cat calling to rape and sexual assault. Society will write off a woman's experiences by claiming that she shouldn't have been wearing what she was wearing or that she shouldn't have said what she said. This again is movement of blame from men to women. This cycle is further reinforced by people teaching women that it is up to us to keep ourselves safe from men. We are taught that we shouldn't dress in revealing or tight clothes and that we should remove ourselves from potentially dangerous situations quickly. Unfortunately, that is not always possible as men are more often stronger and taller then women and others wont come to the rescue (girls are taught to scream FIRE if then need help and not HELP because people will respond to a fire more often then a cry for help). By teaching girls/women proactively that they need to 'accommodate' boys/men by dressing or speaking a certain way we are teaching girls/women that they need to be responsible for the boys/mans actions instead of the boy/man themselves. Again, this is movement of blame from men to women about an action. "But they were wrong" (Halsey, 2021) is acknowledging that "boys will be boys" is a wrong and unjust statement, that boys/men need to take responsibility and accountability for their actions. This song is about ownership and objectification of women; women as property and as a commodity. The treatment of women by men is cyclic (who do you think teaches the boys that their actions are ok? Their parents either consciously or subconsciously) and that is why the title is tradition. This also happens to be the most emphasized piece of the song: the actions described in the beginning were wrong and that is where Halsey draws your attention to by the vocals themselves. Again I will say that this is my interpretation of these specific lyrics and how they relate to her song as a whole. Could I be wrong? Yes. Its definently possible. The only person who really knows what these lyrics are about is Halsey and we will only know if Halsey themself shares them with us. ~EC P.S. I invite discourse, not anger.
She filmed these live performances while she was pregnant and available so she could use them post baby and album release to promote and showcase since she knew after the baby she wouldn't have time to do these things. Brilliant. Iconic. We STAN.

2:58 did you guys notice how her voice changes from painful to childlike innocent to sultry in just 2 lines? this is.... i mean this is her. this is how powerful her vocals are. its stunning how she finishes the "but they were wrong" line and that was a painful emotion so right after she sings "take what you want" in this hurt tone. but as she gets to "never permission" its like a child reciting something, like the many things we're taught to just say or do to please. and with the wink as the camera angle changes, that's a different side of her, sultry and sexy and it's almost an invite "take what you want" it's just awestriking.
that’s because this is not live live (I don’t think she’s necessarily suggesting it is either tho). Like I think up until that point they’d used a single-take in the studio, but she wasn’t satisfied with that take’s last chorus so she overdubbed part of it or something. It’s *possible* I’m wrong but I’d be gobsmacked, she does it consistently in the last chorus at the same parts it’d be absurd.
@@Luke-cb8ub their expressions go with their vocals tho. i mean i fully back you on the part that it's edited for better quality in lots of these 'lives', but in the particular part im talking about i think it's quite genuine cuz the way they're singing is also the way their expressions change. and i dont think any of us will deny that halsey's completely capable of that kind of range in such a short time
"I am not a woman, I'm a god" I mean at her concert she did say all of her songs were true. They're all so powerful and beautiful and that's two of the many reasons I love her!
I wonder how many people have actually taken the time to listen to the message behind this album, it’s beautiful yet painful. Halsey is truly a brave woman.
I'm sad she didn't preform it live, I wanted to hear her say "all of this is temporary~" in her raw voice. Looking forward if she decides to do a tour of this album! Def will buy tickets.
The best of the album and probably the only Halsey song I like the studio version better. It's strong live but so very eerie in the album version. Still, one of her greatest works for me was this song.
This song gives me the energy, anger, and determination to want to find the guy that assaulted and stalked me and then fight him. It's the fight I needed in me at the time
