I promised myself everything in this video, oddly enough. Then I find this, I've been trying intervals to start. I started backwards, I can play Maiden, Metallica, blah blah, but I don't know what I'm doing.
Here are some timestamps for y'all 1:17 - Learn the damn notes on the fretboard 3:57 - Make sure to include warmups, improvising and playing songs in your practice routines 12:05 - Improve your chord vocabulary 15:55 - Take guitar lessons!
One of the best decisions I’ve ever made while learning guitar was to buy a looper pedal. It helped me with my timing, my chord progressions, and my improvisation.
@@BOBANDVEG the Ditto looper is probably the most popular but I really enjoyed the Electro-Harmonix 720 Looper. They make smaller/cheaper versions too, with less memory and features. The playback quality always sounded great. Also, the Helix stuff and Pod Go have loopers in them.
The moment you said you don't want anyone to memorize the notes on the fretboard is when i liked the video. A thing that helped me learn the fretboard was to learn octaves. For example, G on the 3rd fret of the low E string's octave is found by skipping the A string and going to the D string 2 frets up.
Yes, a great video of the rhythm .. but with a promise of a video instruction of the solo. There are no good videos teaching an accurate and detailed depiction of this blistering short solo by Sykes. If anyone can deliver, it is Mr. Ben Eller.
Every time I play guitar, I always play my 15 song Gojira playlist from top to bottom. Playing songs is awesome! And still adding more songs to the playlist
Damn dude, @10:44 hit the nail on the head for me! I'm embarrassed how much time I've spent on youtube, nerding out over music theory, harmony, studying polyphia songs, learning how to set up a home recording studio... but I still can't play Smells Like Teen Spirit from start to finish 😂 That changes TODAY. Thanks, Uncle Ben!!
1 year later i stumbled upon this video after, starting therapy for the third time with an amazing professional, starting on medication for antidepression and anxiety and, finally, picking up the guitar again. this video expanded how i think about the guitar. i'm self-taught and never tried something different than looking up metallica tabs and playing them. for the most part, that was amazing. but, with that, comes the thought (or ignorance hehe) of "wow there's so many notes on the guitar and every one is different, i'll never going to learn them". this video makes sense, the explanation of ben makes sense, it really showed me that i can keep learning, and keep improving on one of the hobbies that helped me through the toughest times. i'm stoked to jump into unknown territory, learning, wow i never thought i would say this, notes on the guitar and so much more. from the bottom of my heart, thank you ben. the content that you put out it's simply amazing.
You know, your presence in Fluff's vids has been a reminder (from an authoritative place I might add) that actually learning to USE this stuff matters. My own promptings combined mind you, but there's Uncle Ben, infiltrating my gear nerding. I hate you dude (lol). I've done the playing songs thing as my primary learning method. I'm 53 and still don't know the fretboard and been playing since 13. I was today years old when you reminded me about the 5 minute thing. You've given me some good places to chip away, and I'm keeping them. I've NEVER been one to make the new year resolution, but you've inspired EVEN to that today. *fist bump*
The 5 min learning idea is great - I always struggled to know how long you should practice a lick for without boring yourself with 30 mins of the same lick
You really are the absolute best teacher on the web man. I see others but always come back to you as you are no BS and straightforward and simply pleasant to listen to. Thanks Man!
Ben is just the coolest, well-spoken, and most helpful guitar dude out there. One hell of a player too. Thanks Ben, for all that you do for us string-slingers. Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy shredding new year!
THIS IS YOUR BEST VIDEO! Amen Uncle Ben (I'm probably older than you but you've earned "uncle"). I grew up learning to play in the 80s when shred was so front and center. It wasn't until recently that I released I wasn't a very good musician. Yeah I could pick fast but I had not wrote one song. I didn't know what made songs good. It really is all about the song. Girls dance to good songs not dudes sweep picking. Some things I've been working on. Make a "campfire" play list, know those songs. When you get asked to play something at a campfire/small gathering...boom you will play something that will get people singing. I also started learning piano and bass. Not to become a virtuoso on those instruments but to play songs I like and have more tools available to write songs. Again, excellent video.
Thanks for Sharing Uncle! Best advice ever got in life was from my father (RIP): 'Work your weak points!' And BTW, I'm a 'Lydian' guy specially in E, as you can use it as a drone base and get a big feel for it. Have a great new Year!
I need to set my mind on learning scales and more theory instead of aimlessly using pentatonic shapes etc. I have all the best equipment I just need to put it to work.
I used to have a Ibanez 3120...back in 1999 ... sold it a couple years later... it just didn't play as well as a 550 or a Jem ...and I couldn't take it anymore...it was a different beast...and I wanted a Jem (never got the Jem either)
Very happy that UA-cam’s algorithm finally figured out that I - after a year of watching guitar instructional videos - might be interested in your channel. Subscribed and joined on Patreon. Looking forward to seeing more.
F--- Jenni Craig and her fat loss resolutions... I'm going to follow your advice and continue to improve my playing in 2022!!! Thanks again for everything you do for the guitar community Ben. Have a safe & happy new year.
I’m in the middle of watching and had to pause to say that it’s already some of the finest thoughtful wisdom you Uncle Ben has ever shared to your many nephs & nieces!
My 2022 goals in the practice room are: 1) Daily Technique using Jody Fisher's "30 Day Guitar Workout", variety of daily exercises so warm-ups switch up each day. 2) Monthly - learn 2 of the studies from Jacque Dont's Op. 37 - 24 Exercises for the Violin (reading and musical technique work) 3) One tune a month from John Scofield's "Time on My Hands" (1990). Not going to learn all the solos, but analyze his solos and improvise.
You sure love your Suhrs Sir! I got my first guitar in '84 for Christmas, because that's what I wanted. My mom had bought me a Kay Strat copy, and a no name 10 watt amp. I got me a Mel Bay book and learned all of the cowboy chords. Then tabs came out, but I mostly played by ear. I knew the names of the regular chords. But, thanks to you, Rick Beato, Marty, Paul Davids, Mike from the Art of Guitar etc. I've learned a lot more and a lot of music theory as well. I'm 52 now, and my playing has progressed exponentially! I want to especially thank you, and the other dudes for what you do. These guitar channels are about the only decent things on UA-cam lol. Thanks again my man, and keep on Rocking!❤🤘😝🤘
Hey Ben, can’t call you uncle because I’m way older than you… I love your content, keep on doing what you’re doing, stay safe and see you next year 🤘🏻😆🎸 greetings from Sascha Berlin
My goals for 2022 are: Build my library of songs that I can play from start to finish, right now that's 0. Further my music theory knowledge. Find some local people to jam with. I'm going to destroy these goals with help from Uncle Ben and joining your Patreon. I'm going to make my step son so damn proud.
I hardly ever pick up my guitar, never really practice in any structured way, and don’t really get into anything metal. Mostly I just watch these videos to hear you speak. Love this channel.
Personally I want to try and learn a new song every month, it's the way my guitar teacher really pushed on me, learning whole songs in time with the track itself since every song we learn has many lessons within it. Presently I'm underway learning Bucketheads "A Real Diamond in the Rough" and I'm almost done with it, so I wanna keep learning songs each month and exercise my fingerbrains as much as possible!
Great stuff Ben and I'm all for it. A covered wagon by candle light, lol. That makes me just a mule with no light but I didn't start then. I just started three years ago so I'm just a guitar pup. Keep rocking! Love your show.
My favorite thing to do on guitar to this day over 20 years later, is still improv, it brings me joy every time. Also, bro is that green amp head and old Matamp???!!!
I order C1 Evil Twin by Schecter! I work hard so I can aford it! Now I will have to practice and plan hard to become a better player! Thanks for your advices!
Hi Uncle Ben. Thanks for all the stuff and all the advices. My resolutions : play more (complete) songs, work on hybrid picking (my weakest point by far) and write & record full songs. Cheers from Bordeaux
When learning triads it was, and is, so damn hard to stop memorizing patterns and pay attention to the notes. Once I learned the major and minor shapes for each string grouping, I just looked for the root notes. The problem arose when I was improvising and making lines over a backing track. It turned out I only knew the root note and the shape, so it was really difficult to connect them when soloing. For instance, when the chord switched to D, it was difficult to grab the closest note in the D triad from my current position. I had to visually identify the root, see the shape in my mind, then move to it. It happens fast, but not fast enough to keep time and play smoothly. Breaking the habit of visually seeing patterns instead of notes is about as hard as it was to quit smoking. Damn those teen years I spent listening to guitar magazines and small hometown instructors saying memorizing shapes for everything was the way to go,.
Great video Uncle B! That quote about practicing really struck with me lol. I always find myself going to fun riffs I like to play instead of doing something I can't do as well. Definitely something I'll have to work on!. You said about only practice for 5 mins with whatever exercise you choose. I'm gonna guess it's ok to do another exercise after that one for the same amount of time? So having however many exercises with varying technics all for 5 mins a day would be ok to do? Thanks for all the awesome content this year!! You're a legend!. Here's to a good 2022! Keep it up mate!
Regarding learning the notes on the fretboard, I recently learned how to read sheet music and that helped me a TON. It’s a lot of practice with the same notes and if you learn how to make the same note on different strings you immediately learn the notes there as well
This year I'm breaking out of the 0-1-2, 5-5-5, 8-10-9 (Am shapes) which I base almost everything on. I was always good at speed bursts but never used them as power exercices/REAL warmups, and you opened my eyes on going up and down scales instead of noodling in them vs just ascend/descend. Great pointers, happy new year man.
Thanks for watching! What are YOUR guitar-related New Year’s Resolutions?
Be able to play eruption from start to finish !!!
Stop mindless noodling that have become habit.
#1 resolution is to swap pickups in my RG3120 like you did. Maybe Duncan Custom bridge, '59 neck.
To keep learning and accessing plateaus I have not yet reached, with your help Uncle Ben!
I really need to focus on being able to switch picking techniques. My fret hand feels like its light years ahead of my picking hand..
"If you're practicing and it sounds good, you're not practicing" well in that case, i'm pleased to report that i've been doing a lot of practicing
I even practice onstage sometimes, apparently!
I think maybe a better way to put it is, "if you aren't frustrated, you aren't learning anything new"
LMAO amen. I'm a very accomplished practicer
I hope to have you on a LiveStream in 2022. A guy can dream!
Great idea. I and a lot of others, would definitely watch that.
That would be a dream come true. Mike and uncle Ben. The ultimate crossover.
That would be awesome Mike and Ben! Happy New year to all! and to all a Rocking Roll night! (as Santa would say?!🤷♀) lol...
Make it happen. Two of the best channels!
Come on Ben make it happen
This channel is so underrated
This is like a clip show episode of a sitcom
I promised myself everything in this video, oddly enough. Then I find this, I've been trying intervals to start. I started backwards, I can play Maiden, Metallica, blah blah, but I don't know what I'm doing.
Quist is what I play over, many thanks.

Sound advice good man.
Any recommendations for (maybe affordable) loopers??

I like that 5 minute practice idea
“Less Painless” Happy New Year from the Gotcha Guy! 😜🤘🏻🎸

My New Years resolution: Learn the solo to "still of the night" after Mr. Ben Eller shows us how it's done. Happy new year!
I could’ve swore he made a video about still of night…
Yes, a great video of the rhythm .. but with a promise of a video instruction of the solo. There are no good videos teaching an accurate and detailed depiction of this blistering short solo by Sykes. If anyone can deliver, it is Mr. Ben Eller.
Agreed! Ben I loved your video on Still of the Night, please see if you can decipher that glorious solo and bring it to the front of the mix.
The solo off Still Of The Night from John Sykes' Bad Boy Live....
I just wish it wasn't so buried in the mix cause it's insanely cool! Just so damn hard to hear the notes. Help us Unc!
Fantastic advice!
Great tips, Thanks for sharing.
The 5 minutes timer advice is pure gold! Thank you!
Unc Ben been putting out some absolute gold lately
