Freedom to Learn: National Day of Action

On May 3, 2023, a series of events were held in South Orange and Maplewood bringing attention to and fighting against book banning and historical censorship. These events were sponsored by SOMA Action, SOMA Justice, SOMA Community Coalition on Race, Erasing Essex's Borders, and the South Orange and Maplewood public libraries.
At this event held in SOPL, we heard readings from several adult/teen-themed works that have commonly appeared on banned books lists, including readings by SOMA Action board member Tara Mellon, Village Trustee Summer Jones, SOPL librarians Keisha Miller and Erika Dragonetti, and others.
