8:08 Mayday goes out 9:55 RIT established and going in 12:55 Bat 8 takes over RIT 14:30 First FF is pulled out The despair in the BC's voice at 35:05 shows just how saddening it was to realize they pulled out someone they didn't know was lost and still had someone inside.
Corrine Erydinan RIT is a rapid intervention team, as others have said it's a dedicated unit to go in and get another firefighter when they go down. the mayday call and rit activation is terrifying for us. I'm showing this as training tomorrow for my guys. RIP, fair winds and following seas to the LODD.
I use to live near SA When this happened as a tow truck driver. I was working and dropped a car about 4 miles from the incident. A few months after this incident I towed a SA Captain’s vehicle and we talked about it and he said the LT for Ladder 35 did not like to fight fire and they never should have went offensive on this. The LT for Ladder 35 did get in trouble but I am not sure the outcome of it.
So sad. I've been a cop for over 20 years, I love my firefighting brothers, but I'd rather do what I do... I can shoot back against a bad guy, there's not much you can do when you're surrounded by flames and shit starts collapsing.
RIP Scott Deem. A brave hero and will never be forgotten my brother. god bless you and your family. You are one of San Antonio's finest. I wish I had the power to end those flames and save your life. You are soo brave my friend to have been able to call your self a fire fighter and take that role that most wouldn't have guts to do, but you did. You payed your dues and went out like the the hero you were born to be, now your in gods hands my brother and rest easy now you'll be the guardian angel that will protect your family and look over them. the city of San Antonio will forever be grateful to you....We love you
That must have been the worst call that the IC ever had to make, having to get everyone out while knowing that he still had somebody trapped in there. RIP brother.
Christopher Coburn thank you for your sacrifice brother, I'm a resident of SC, so always knowing there's men and women like ya'll out there is always reassuring.
Very smart and commendable choice by both RIT section chief and command to realize that it was not a viable rescue to go in. I feel that kind of call would be the toughest to make. I’ve heard mayday calls where they have had to physically restrain firefighters to keep crews from going in. Rest easy brother, we have it from here
God bless Scott Deems family and all other firefighters and ems personnel that were there that night fighting hard to save lives of those firefighters rest in peace brother you will be missed dearly hold the thine red line in heaven proudly wear that Maltese cross patch on your shoulder
This was an arson fire? Seattle had a similar fire back in 95. They lost 4 --2 Lieutenents and 2 ff's. The loser responsible fled to Brazil and they wouldn't extradite back to the USA unless the death penalty was taken off as a sentence. If there is a LODD involved in an arson fire it is automatically a capitol murder charge that should have been the case in this fire
praying for his family god rest his soul RIP a hero gone all those men deserve our praise. This scares me my 18 yrs old is training to become one of them.
Jeanne Fiddler My 21 year old son is a Firefighter. Good luck to your son and God watch over him and all of the other brave men and women! RIP SCOTT DEEM
8:08 Mayday called. 9:48 another person keys up and advises command someone is in distress, *clearly yelling for help*. Why was the mayday ignored and why did it take so long for RIT to be established?? When are Departments going to learn water is what put fires out and saves lives. Read the NIOSH reports it that’s what it take because apparently common sense isn’t enough.
The audio stopped too soon, it was a cluster when they finally found the downed firefighter. The firefighters could see the firefighter 30 feet in and command wouldn't let them go get him. They had the safety officer physically stopping the other firefighters from going in to get him. I don't care if there was no chance of survival, if I see the firefighter I am going to get him. You can try and stop me but good luck with that. You can fire me when I get out.
Darryl, it was the right thing to do keeping everyone out. This audio cuts off about half of the incident. I listened to this incident in real time starting right after the mayday was called. The downed firefighter wasn't actually spotted till more than two hours after the start of the incident and the fire had been knocked down and the smoke cleared. At this point there was absolutely nothing that could've been done.
This video should be taken off of here. The family and especially the kids of Firefighter Scott Deem shouldn't have to have their Dad's last panicked words! My son is a Firefighter and I wouldn't want his last panicked words on UA-cam! Tasteless and disrespectful in my opinion.
It's used as a training video. I don't know if you're a firefighter or not. Yet he died, through the loss of life, it will teach the future firefighters. Let no man's ghost come back to say that his training let him down
Why would you make this recording public before the investigation has been completed? Firefighter Deem hasn't even been buried and already his widow and kids can hear his last moments of his life. I hope you sleep well because I'm sure that poor woman and her kids won't.

Hello. what does RIT stand for? I attempted looking it up online but was unsure.
Bnadit RIT Rapid Intervention Team. Team of firefighters that are there to rescue fellow firefighters
Thanks for posting pinning your comment!

ScannerAudio No sir, thank you for posting this so that we can learn from the mistakes made here and try to prevent them in the future.

My God those poor bastards, I cannot believe what I am hearing...... rest in peace my brothers
What a cluster.
I don't know what planet this command officer was. But when a Mayday goes out that should be a priority search.
Hope there is justice for Mr. Deem!
praying for his family god rest his soul RIP a hero gone all those men deserve our praise. This scares me my 18 yrs old is training to become one of them.

Gotta bite my tongue here!
Very hard not to comment on this.
No need. It’s infuriating.

Somewhat like a mayday is called, okay everyone, run in this heavy burning building and just look wherever. Makes perfect fucking sense.
Rit requires another set of ff as backup before anyone enters
R.I.P firefighters scott

Darryl Smith Amen brother! I'm with you all day with that!
no way in hell they'd keep from getting one of my brothers out, they'd have to pin me to the ground
Bill Buehner Same here!
that's why they have Command structures. we mourn his loss but we aren't freelancers.

The mayday was not scott.
Florida promise used to audio for training purposes only not make people sad but it's what happens in real life on the job

Alfredo Sosa i agree, like how is something like this even allowed publicly? this is sad, especially for the family
Alfredo Sosa training purposes.
The recording is public by virtue of the fact it was broadcasted, unencrypted, over the public airwaves.
This was a 3rd party monitoring radio traffic.
@@sarahq3962 It's public for training purposes. That's really the only reason I'm watching it, is because I need it for MAYDAY class.
