Bakehouse close was used as Jamie's printshop in outlander and tweedale close was used as market scene. Even Edinburgh museum was used in the filming.

    Hi Tony,
I have been following a few channels here including (Shaun) and (Arran Of Alba) among others to see how things have changed in Edinburgh and the Lothians since I emigrated almost 20 years ago.
I hadn't been back at all until last year when my mum sadly passed and due to the circumstances I didnt get time to do any sightseeing.
I discovered your channel only a few of weeks ago and have enjoyed catching up on your older content.
I love your enthusiasm for the history and thirst for knowledge hidden in the old architecture.
Its sad how many new and hideous buildings have been allowed to grow in Edinburgh.
So many more have sprung up just in the few years that I have been gone.
Your walk down St John Street to Hollyrood Road was interesting as this whole area appears to be allocated to the University.
The University seems to be one of the largest real estate owners in Edinburgh today.
My nephew is the Maintenance Manager and spends so much of his time servicing hundreds of properties owned by the University in the city.
@5:20 That's the 'Old Priory' and as you correctly said is owned by Edinburgh University.
@5:50 The building that looks like an old school was 'The Edinburgh Provincial Training Centre' for teachers in the day...Now 'Patersons Land' it's Owned and used as a campus by the University of Edinburgh.
@6:18 The Building with the turrets is the 'Old Kirk of Edinburgh' and yep!... it's also owned by the University.
It's certainly a fantastic looking construction.
Keep up the good work. 🙂

Dear Tony, Greetings from Chicago, USA. I was searching around UA-cam in preparation for my third visit to Edinburgh in a few months. It will be a little respite for me, especially welcome after the last 2+ years working at my job as a nurse-practitioner in our local hospital. I'm so grateful that I found your channel! I'm now savoring your wonderful videos, and making a list of things I'd like to see. I share your sensibilities about architecture and history in an urban setting. Your insider viewpoint makes all the difference. Thank you. And if you ever visit Chicago, drinks are on me (as well as a few of our insider tips!). PS I know the value of a Patreon to industrious folk like you, and will be subscribing in due course.

    G’day Tony
I have really enjoyed your series on the Closes off the Royal Mile. Your cheeky personality comes through and draws me into the video, as I am sure it does with others. Many thanks for your response to an earlier video.
I left Edinburgh as a 13 year old in 1961 and your tours enlighten me and also bring back memories. I lived at Blinkbonny Avenue, and went to school at Daniel Stewart’s ( now Melville Stewart’s, I think), Flora Stevenson’s in Comely Bank, and Bellevue High School. I also frequented Black Hall and Craigleith Station areas on Queensferry Road. I remember walking to school along Orchard Road in winter, in the snow. Dad had a shop on Morningside Road, Morningside. If you are able to do a walking tour of these areas I am sure your many viewers would appreciate it.
Keep up the great work you do - far better than a scripted talk on a commercial tour, I am sure!

Thanks for this one Tony. We have watched them all and in this one you actually showed us our AirBnB we will be staying in when we come from Seattle at the end of May. Right next to the Truvia restaurant in Canonsgate. It was way cool. Would love to meet you when we are in the city May 21-24. Feel like we know you already. I think we have seen 90% of your amazing videos and we will finish the rest before we leave.

I am the bloke in the wheelchair, and I don't know what happened but I did not realise that I had accidently unsubscribed myself. It is corrected now and am wondering if you ever got around to doing the video about things to do with access for quite a wide wheelchair. Thank you also for mentioning it after I wrote in the request, it was much appreciated.

I was waiting to see what you thought of Old Tolbooth Wynd. When we visited Edinburgh in September the place we rented was just down there and I loved that little tunnel leading to the Royal Mile. When we went through security at the airport we thought it was pronounced Old Tolbooth Wynd as in blowing wind instead of Wynd like winding a clock. The agent got a pretty good chuckle out of our pronunciation. (Wish I had seen your video first. Though you did save me when I had to pronounce Cockburn St correctly so thanks for that haha!)

I love these videos, but you know that by now from my previous comments on your videos. But seriously Tony....you crack me up. The space-time continuum for hire! Ha! You do have jokes! I'm looking forward to the last of the series since I know there is a fantastic close coming up. I love the old buildings and get excited to see the old structures still in tact. We don't have anything around here (in the states) that compares to that age of build.

Thank you for reading the signs! There were still a few sellers down that close this last spring. Mostly just food and beer stalls. Please go back to Tolbooth Market and do a tour. That would be great. 😊 Tolbooth Tavern is one of my favorite buildings on the Royal Mile. Absolutely breathtaking. Yes! I totally agree, do not miss the Museum of Edinburgh. The inside of it is beautiful with squeaky wood floors. Your videos always make me smile because I have pictures of almost all of the things you point out. Your videos are the absolute best on Edinburgh. Thank you!

Sorry you didn’t show the Whitehouse Close the most photographed one on the Royal Mile.Think it is about the last close on the left hand side opposite the Scottish Parliament . Believe it was a staging Inn.

I remember renting space before but eventually lost it with the passage of time.

    Tony
St. John Street is named after the Knights of St John who owned property there. Just past the arch on the right is a historic Masonic lodge dating from 1677. Just past the lodge is the headquarters of St John Scotland( not a University building).
Bakehouse Close is named after a bakehouse located here in the 19th century. Acheson House can be found a short way on the left. Built in 1633 it housed the Secretary of State for Scotland and later became a brothel named the Cock and Trumpet, there a various plaques about this.
I learnt all this and much more whilst walking using a Edinburgh Hidden Walk guide.

Edinburgh is full of windows blocked up because back they decided the amount of tax you paid was on the amount of windows each building had and was called the window tax

    • @ClanBroonford
      @ClanBroonford  4 роки тому

This is true, but is actually a lesser amount than people think. Some are actually fake windows that were always blocked off as they were built for aesthetics of the building. And a larger amount was for various changes in the building over the years. That’s what I. M referring to. What was the changes that were made. You can also see a large amount of old blocked up doors which obviously were not blocked up for the old window tax.
