Because "less" can be used for both countable and uncountable nouns, while "fewer" is strictly for countable nouns. Great tip! I would elaborate and say this:
If you don’t need to add a unit (one computer, two computers) it’s quantifiable.
If you need to add a unit (one *bottle* of water, two bottles of water) it’s not quantifiable.
The same is true for using number vs amount. An amount of something is when you need a unit (unquantifiable) and a number of something is when you don’t need one (quantifiable)

For those who don't understand it.
Use "less" when something is uncountable (for example: I get less money than John.)
And use "fewer" when something is countable (for example: There are fewer students in my class than last year.)
[Sorry if It wasn't 100% correct, I tried my best]

If you don't know what quantifiable means, it means something that can be easily measured or is possible and easy to count by an individual human. Something that isn't considered quantifiable is hair, dust, atoms, lava, and water. Some of these can be typically measured in units along with hair dust and lava, but they're difficult to quantify because they are highly variable in size and composition. Additionally, hair and dust are likely or often measured qualitatively rather than quantitatively. Even if you tried to count or another individual tried to count hair, it would likely be an approximation.
