Buddy Rich Absolutely one of the top 3 drummers important to me at my start of learning drums. I had one or two Buddy Rich rudiments books used weekly during my lessons. I obsessively watched clips of him on the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert tapes, repeatedly watched my vhs copy of The Channel One Set Live from King Street (1985), and played out my Krupa vs Rich Drum Battle cassette. His hands were the most developed of anyone, and his playing lit up my brain like no other. So glad he’s a part of my foundation.

Happy Thanksgiving (and good morning, afternoon evening or night), Pete. A fine SoT selection. Personal pick today? Going a little bit off the regular path today and honoring the memory of my parents on this holiday by picking the great American jazz drummer, Bernard "Buddy" Rich. Mom liked him because of her love for many of the big bands in which he played. Dad liked and respected him and often said there would never be another drummer like Buddy Rich. When I asked and got a snare/tom-tom drum and cymbal one Christmas, they may have thought there would be a drummer in the family. But that interest waned when I started following rock keyboardists. Don't really have many albums or song choices for the day, but the West Side Story Suite sticks out in my mind as the one played quite a bit when Dad was in a jazz listening mode. Thanks, Pete. Looking forward to the final two.
@@johnmichaelwilliams6694 hi John. Fantastic pick and article. Don’t worry about using that word. I couldn’t remember what it meant until I looked it up. You would think with all the college education I’ve had that I would know what different words mean but I don’t.
My number 3 is a guy who's name I haven't seen that often in this rundown. Amazing really, considering his career and his reputation. I give you Colin Flooks. "Who?" I hear you cry. You may know him better as Mr Cozy Powell. A human 'hammer', he's played with such guitar luminaries as Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore, Michael Schenker, Gary Moore, Brian May, Peter Green and Yngwie Malmsteen as well as stints behind the kit with Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, Graham Bonnet and Emerson, Lake and Powell. That doesn't even include his session work where he played with artists as diverse as Donovan, Hot Chocolate, Robert Plant and Roger Daltrey among others or his long solo career. A hard hitting beast of a drummer. One of the few who had a hit single that was little more than a drum solo - Dance With The Devil reached number 3 in the UK singles charts in January 1973. I still have the 7 inch vinyl single somewhere. Tragically taken from us at the age of just 50 in a road accident, his legend is assured due to his work. The stuff he played on with Rainbow especially. A Light In The Black was originally recorded in just 1 take. Recommended listening? Of course Rising by Rainbow, but any of his work is worth listening to.
My list is heating up! Pick #3 John Bonham Favourite drum performances: When the Levee Breaks, The Ocean, Achilles Last Stand 4. Bill Bruford 5. Buddy Rich 6. Neil Peart 7. Pierre Van der Linden 8. Phil Collins 9. John Weathers 10. Gene Krupa 11. Chris Slade 12. Ringo Starr 13. Louie Bellson 14. Cesar Zuiderwijk 15. Steve Gadd 16. Trilok Gurtu 17. Roger Taylor 18. Mel Pritchard 19. Hi Pete & everyone. Dave here. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you Stateside. My pick today is JON HISEMAN. One of the most technically gifted and exciting drummers that I know. Band leader in the original Colosseum, Tempest, Colosseum II. He then joined up with his wife Barbara Thompson in Paraphernalia. His bands veered from rock to jazz via fusion, and they featured some stellar musicians like Alan Holdsworth, Clem Clempson and Gary Moore on guitar; Dave Greenslade and Don Airey on keys; as well as wife Barbara on sax and flute. Jon was never outclassed though, and his solos were just something else. Albums: Colosseum - Valentyne Suite (1969). Grew up with this album, which was a favourite of my older brother. Colosseum II - War Dance (1977). At the rock end of fusion, this band played accessible, melodic rock with incredible virtuosity. Seeing them live was a mind-boggling experience. Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia - Mother Earth (1982). Saw them live too, at one of London's iconic pub venues The Half Moon, Putney. Chatted to Jon after the gig (in the men's restroom of all places!) about Colosseum II, which he said disbanded partly due to lack of interest (!!!). Gary Moore and Don Airey obviously went on to greater success afterwards, and the whole band, plus Barbara, played on Andrew Lloyd Webber's Variations. Showcase track: Put It This Way (Colosseum II). Jon's playing is almost like a drum solo throughout this melodic fusion piece.
I'd like to wish Pete and all the members of the SoT family a happy and safe Thanksgiving weekend. May you and your families enjoy a great holiday. 🦃🥧✌️

#3 for me is Tommy Aldridge. The king of double bass, Tommy, being a fan of Louis Bellson's double-bass drum setup, took that idea to higher levels and pioneered new uses within a rock setting. I have been fortunate enough to see Tommy play with Ted Nugent and White Snake, but Tommy has also played with Black Oak Arkansas, Pat Travers, Tony MacAlpine, Vinnie Moore, Ozzy Osbourne, plus many more, and he brings genius, innovating inspiration to any band he plays with and he never disappoints.
Billy Cobham - such a good and essential choice. Great on everything he did and one of the best I ever saw live (solo band gig at London's South Bank in the early 90s). Brilliant!
JACK DE JOHNETTE: Albums - how the hell can you choose from a discography unparalleled. Anyhow, I’ll start with Bitches Brew with Miles Davis and a collection of other superstars; Gateway with Jon Abercrombie and bang up to date a recent release from a live 1960s performance with McCoy Tyner called Forces of Nature, Live at Slugs. Favourite performance, impossible but I’m picking a live recording with the brilliant Bill Evans and one of my favourite jazz tracks the Miles Davis penned Nardis. This was recorded in 1968 and know as the Hilversun Concert. A giant among drummers.
The rest is in order: 3) Cozy Powell Albums: Rising - Rainbow Slide It In - Whitesnake Michael Schenker Group - MSG Headless Cross - Black Sabbath Rough and Ready - Jeff Beck Group Songs: Stargazer - Rainbow Slow an’ Easy - Whitesnake A Light In the Black - Rainbow Let Sleeping Dogs Lie - Michael Schenker Group Love Ain't No Stranger - Whitesnake Got the Feeling - Jeff Beck Group Kill In the Spirit World - Black Sabbath 3) Cozy Powell 4) John Bonham 5) Bill Bruford 6) Carl Palmer 7) Clive Bunker 8) Ian Paice 9) Charlie Watts 10) Andy Parker 11) Clive Burr 12) Levon Helm 13) Jason Bonham 14) Keith Moon 15) Nick Mason 16) Nicko McBrain 17) Tommy Aldridge 18) Max Weinberg 19) John Panozzo 20) Doug Clifford 21) Joey Kramer 22) Carmine Appice 23) Vinny Appice 24) Alex Van Halen 25) Ginger Baker 26) Roger Taylor 27) Kenny Aronoff 28) Steve Smith 29) Dylan Sevey 30) Jeff Porcaro
Going with Mike Portnoy! 3 favorite albums of his are Images and Words Awake and Scenes From a Memory and my favourite drum Performance is the Dance of Eternity
No.3…Nicko McBrain-Iron Maiden. Maiden is my favorite band of all time. When Nicko replaced Clive Burr who was great also,Maiden became a more kind of band. Nicko’s style is more progressive and heavy metal, which fits perfectly with Maiden. To many songs to choose from as being his best, but Where Eagles Dare, his introduction to the band is a monster opener.

3. John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) The second to last of the Big Boomer Four of legendary drummers in my list, Bonzo Bonham! It's hard to say anything new about one of the most talked about drummers. On my favorite track, "When the Levee Breaks," it sounds like he's using treetrunks for drumsticks. Led Zeppelin II (1969) Led Zeppelin I (1969) Led Zeppelin IV (1971)
Just got time for a comparatively brief comment about my (no order of preference) choice today. That ace cumugeon of the kit, GINGER BAKER. He was arguably really the first virtuoso superstar rock drummer. Although calling him purely a rock drummer might be likely to raise his ire. Ginger felt that term far too limiting for a man of his talents and he was extremely talented as a drummer, accomplished in jazz, fusion and later on world, especially African based music. His membership in the pantheon of great drummers is assured, but you sometimes get the feeling he didn't derive all that much pleasure from some of his gigs.
@iainhead9898 No probs Iain. Much of what he did musically doesn't appeal to me either, but I do like Cream and therefore felt that I wanted to include Mr Baker.
3. #3...Neil Peart, Rush. Maybe the best evidence of his greatness is reflected by Geddy and Alex's waiting several years for him to recover emotionally from the death of his daughter and wife in the late 90's. They never even considered performing without him, they were one unit with 3 irreplaceable parts. And if you watch clips of them performing, you can understand this. He was innovative, constantly pushing himself to blend their sound together with his rhythms and lyrics, and his kit was something to behold. 3 favorite albums with him are 2112, A Farewell to Kings and Moving Pictures. My favorite performance is Jacob's Ladder from the Permanent waves album. RIP Neil.
Day 28. Frank Beard (ZZ Top) - Tres Hombres, Fandango!, Degüello song: LaGrange The beardless one holds down the groove with timely playing. Frank's drumming is steeped in R&B and it drives the Tops tunes. So, here is giving the drummer some. 1. Today my pick #3 is Ringo Starr. 3 albums I’m picking are Revolver, abbey Road, White album. Song imo is his best drum performance and he rocks really hard on Helter Skelter
Cheers Pete! Happy Thanksgiving. Thankful to you and others on SOT for expanding my musical palette. Billy Cobham is my absolute favorite jazz drummer. I got to meet him a couple years ago too. Spectrum, Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire.
We are into the final round of our favourite drummers now (Top 3), and my pick for today goes to 3. IAN PAICE, Deep Purple Who would have thaught that this guy who was with the band up from the beginning (1968) would remain their only original member after all the decades until into the present? He is the only band member who is on all Purple albums, and still full of power and energy after 56 years. He might not be as popular as group members like singer Ian Gillan, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore or Keyboardist Jon Lord (RIP) have been, but he always was - and still is - the band’s reliable backbone, doing justice to the songs, no matter if they are pure hard rock or more in laid-back and soft mood. After Deep Purple had disbanded in 1976 for a 8-year hiatus, Ian was part of bandmate Jon Lord’s “Paice-Ashton-Lord” project, then joined David Coverdale’s band “Whitesnake” (again together with Jon Lord), he later was on tour with Gary Moore’s band, before the reunion of Deep Purple Mark 2 in 1984. Though there would be some line-up changes soon after, Ian stayed with the band all the time since then until now. To me, the Purple Albums with Ian’s best playing are: “Deep Purple In Rock”, “Fireball”, and “Burn”. HM: “Machine Head” and “Made In Japan”. Best songs: any on “In Rock”, especially “Speed King” and “Into The Fire”, “Fireball”, “The Mule” (studio or Japan live”, “Fools”, “Highway Star”, “Pictures Of Home”, “Burn”, “You Fool No One”, “Knocking At Your Back Door”, “Perfect Strangers” and so many more, like “Chasing Shadows” from Deep Purple Mark 1 (1969). 03. Ian Paice 04. Carl Palmer 05. Cozy Powell 06. Barriemore Barlow 07. Nick Mason 08. Lee Kerslake 09. Roger Taylor 10. Bill Bruford 11. Bill Ward 12. Alan White 13. Mick Tucker 14. Chester Thompson 15. Mel Pritchard 16. Steve Negus 17. Chris Slade 18. Ringo Starr 19. Simon Kirke 20. Dennis Elliott 21. Russell Gilbrook 22. Don Henley 23. Phil Ehart 24. Nigel Olsson 25. Don Brewer 26. Graeme Edge 27. Charlie Watts 28. Bev Bevan 29. Bob Siebenberg 30. Clive Bunker

Stewart Copeland One I have yet to mention and his band were influenced by a number of bands, and other than their formative years probably no more so than the Police -a band with a distinct sound due in no small part to this guy. Excellent choice and album and song picks, Denny.
Buddy Rich
Absolutely one of the top 3 drummers important to me at my start of learning drums.

@ thanks Debbie. You also have a Happy Thanksgiving
3. John Bonham: Led Zep: Led Zeppelin IV, Led Zeppelin I, Led Zeppelin II. Fav Song-When the Levee Breaks.
and don't forget those that spend Thanksgiving alone 🦃
@@purplesabbath thanks Purple for saying this because I spend all the holidays alone.

Keith Moon is such a great pick, Melanie
@@zlatanfilipovic8798 thanks Zlatan

I got to see Cobham as Bob Weir’s drummer in “Bobby & The Midnites” at Nassau Coliseum in ‘83 (with Hot Tuna). Woah.
Bruford for me no 3.

3. John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)
The second to last of the Big Boomer Four of legendary drummers in my list, Bonzo Bonham! It's hard to say anything new about one of the most talked about drummers. On my favorite track, "When the Levee Breaks," it sounds like he's using treetrunks for drumsticks.

Led Zeppelin IV (1971)
Clive Burr/Nicko McBrain - Debut, 'Killers', 'NOTB', 'Piece of Mind', 'Powerslave', 'Somewhere in Time'.

My #3 Keith Moon
Favorite Song - Baba O'Riley
RIP Neil.

3. IAN PAICE, Deep Purple
Who would have thaught that this guy who was with the band up from the beginning (1968) would remain their only original member after all the decades until into the present?

Great pick! Sure wish you could play audio clips.
Stewart Copeland One I have yet to mention and his band were influenced by a number of bands, and other than their formative years probably no more so than the Police -a band with a distinct sound due in no small part to this guy. Regatta de Blanc Zenyatta Mondatta Ghost in the Machine as well as their first and last albums have one song after another with fascinating drumming.
