Another who never gets the credit he probably deserves. Pick number 5 is the late, great Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones. The original 'quiet man'. For over 60 years, he was the glue that held "the Greatest Rock N Roll Band Ever" together. Even Keith once said "It's Charlie's band. He just lets the rest of us join him". A deceptively "simple" player. Never flash or outrageous, like some of his 60's contemporaries, Charlie kept a simple 4/4 going. Again, like a lot of the classic 60's drummers, he was essentially a jazz player. When The Stones were on hold, he quietly went about his business with the Quartet (or even the "Tentet"), for shows at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London. His work with his main band will be what everyone will remember him for. That run of albums from Beggars Banquet in 1968, through to Goat's Head Soup in 1973 (and beyond) ensures that Charlie will always be regarded as one of the true legends of the music we love.
#5...Phil Collins, Genesis. Have to admit I got tired of seeing Phil and his solo career on MTV in the 80's and let this color my opinion of him...until I went back and listened to the early Genesis albums. Boy, were my eyes opened to the originality and uniqueness of the band and the incredible talent of their drummer. Peter Gabriel obviously got most of the attention, folllowed by the wonderful musicianship of Banks, Hackett and Rutherford, but it is Phil who was the glue that held it all together through changing keys and time signatures. Melodic, tasteful, powerful and innovative, with vocal talent good enough to lead any band. 3 best albums for me are Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, and Selling England By the Pound. Favorite performance has to be the incredible Supper's Ready, with Musical Box a close second.
Excellent choice Pete. I've got Moonie coming up on my list too. 5) Ian Paice (Deep Purple) Favorite Albums: Burn Made In Japan In Rock Favorite Performance: "Burn" 5) Ian Paice 6) Neil Peart 7) Mike Portnoy 8) Danny Seraphine 9) Hal Blaine 10) Benny Benjamin, Richard "Pistol" Allen & Uriel Jones 11) John Densmore 12) Mick Avory 13) Bill Bruford 14) Bill Ward 15) Jim Gordon 16) Russ Kunkel 17) Levon Helm 18) Ginger Baker 19) Micky Waller 20) Don Brewer 21) Michael Shrieve 22) Max Weinberg 23) Bobby Caldwell 24) Tommy Ramone 25) Brian Downey 26) Johnny "Bee" Badanjek 27) Doug Clifford 28) Clem Burke 29) Topper Headon 30) Sandy West
@@christophercoles4401 Hi Chris, firstly great choice today, one of the real legendary rock drummers. Hm I was wondering who (no pun intended, oh all right maybe it was) might be your number one.
# 5 Simon Phillips Favorite albums: Metro (Metro); The Wild Places; Streets of Fire (both by Duncan Browne) (three masterworks with an amazing Simon Phillips that no one ever talks about) Favorite performances: Camino Real, pt.1-3 (Duncan Browne, The Wild Places); Streets of Fire (Duncan Browne, Streets of Fire) # 6 Billy Cobham # 7 Neil Peart # 8 Lenny White # 9 John Bonham # 10 Mike Portnoy # 11 Phil Collins # 12 Tony Williams # 13 Ian Paice # 14 Jaki Liebezeit # 15 Ringo Starr # 16 Steve Gadd # 17 Jim Keltner # 18 Michael Shrieve # 19 Buddy Rich # 20 Ginger Baker # 21 Cozy Powell # 22 Guy Evans # 23 John Weathers # 24 Klaus Dinger # 25 Vinnie Colaiuta # 26 Jon Hiseman # 27 Mick Tucker # 28 Mitch Mitchell # 29 Dave Lombardo # 30 Manu Katché
Hi Pete & everyone. Dave here. Fabulous pick of yours - I went with Keith earlier in the month; Young Man Blues too (but from Isle of Wight 1970). My pick today is CARL PALMER, drumming titan in ELP (and Asia). Just like Neil Peart in Rush, Carl's presence makes his trio sounds much bigger. Albums: (ELP) Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Trilogy, Asia s/t debut. Showcase track: difficult to see beyond Tank, and I much prefer the version from the debut album over the one in Works Vol. 1. That transition from the solo & phasing into the huge drum & synth riff is real goose-bumps stuff.
Once this started I knew who my top 5 would be. 5 - Bill Bruford Yes - Fragile, King Crimson - Red, UK - UK So many great pieces from him it is hard to pick a favorite but today I will go with UK In the Dead of Night
#5 for me is Nicko McBrain. Nicko stepped in to fill the drummer role in Iron Maiden for the band’s fourth studio album, Piece of Mind, to present day. Nicko has created many great drum parts on classics, like: Where Eagles Dare, The Trooper, 2 Minutes to Midnight, Can I Play with Madness, and much more. Nicko has always played at an exceptionally high level, and for most drummers he still does, despite recovering from a stroke in January of 2023. It is amazing that he has worked his way back to playing a full energy set of Iron Maiden songs, although he freely admits that he can no longer play certain parts like he used to at this point of his recovery.
No.5…Bill Ward-Black Sabbath. He was a very influential drummer for the doom metal, heavy metal scene. His jazzy and doomy playing style cored Black Sabbath’s sound. One of my favorite of all time,Ward was a big part of why I loved them so much. Songs like War Pigs,Snowblind and others, were the reason why Ward is so great.
#5. Clive Bunker Ever since I heard the Aqualung album in 1971, I have been a huge fan of his drumming. These guys in my top five are ones that I have listened to the drums more than the other instruments. Clive always clicked in my brain because he always hit the right drum or symbol at the right time. Whether it was Mick Abrahams or Martin Barre on guitar, Clive’s drums really shone out. Albums: This Was(1968), Stand Up(1969) & Aqualung(1971). Songs: “Sweet Dream” & “Dharma For One”. I think Dharma is the best written and performed of all the songs written specifically for the drummer. Clive Bunker is also very good on the Isle of Wight live album. What a drummer !!🥁 Keith Moon is still to come for me. It should come as no surprise to anyone who has read anything by me. But I must say that Pete did an excellent job on today’s comment about Moon the Loon !!

Good morning (afternoon, evening or night), Pete. Outstanding SoT pick today included on the personal list earlier since my list not in any particular order. Personal pick today? The English drummer and percussionist who rose to prominence as a founding member of the band Yes - William Scott "Bill" Bruford. Since he has been discussed several times this month, not a lot more detail to add except that SoT has had me listening to a lot more King Crimson in the last few years and likely more albums from that band should be in the favorites. But the three albums for today are Yes's Fragile and Close To The Edge and King Crimson's Red. The song pick - for today and likely to remain a personal favorite is Siberian Khatru from the Close To The Edge album [his final studio album with the band]. Though i did get to see the band play that album in its entirety, Bill had already left the band. Thanks, Pete. Looking forward to your Final Four.
5. Keith Moon 6. Cozy Powell 7. Lars Ulrich 8. Billy Cobham 9. Bill Bruford 10. Mike Portnoy 11. Nick Mason 12. Danny Carey 13. Tony Williams 14. Igor Calavera 15. Carl Palmer 16. Vinny Appice 17. An interesting but maybe not well known Keith Moon/ WHO song is an instrumental , " Dogs part 2". The B- side of the " Pinball Wizard" 45 rpm. Talk about LEAD Drums.
My # 6 pick was Alan White. I said Bruford was coming soon. Today is soon. My pick for today is Bill Bruford. I don't have many albums that he drums on, so I did research on the first 5 albums by Yes. No King Crimson or other stuff. Every Little Thing, ( a Beatles cover), and Something's Coming, from the debut are good. Then from Time and a Word is good. Yours is no Disgrace from The Yes Album is good. Close to the Edge title track is good. My song pick is Heart of the Sunrise from Fragile. Thanks for your patience.

Pick # 5: Keith John Moon/ Keith Moon: The Who "Live at Leeds" released on Track/ Decca Records in '70 "Who's next? " also released on Track in the U.K. / Decca in the U.S. in '71. "The Who": BBC Sessions released on Polydor Records in 2000. This Gene Krupa - inspired drummer certainly had some issues besides being one of the greatest drummers in rock history. I was completely surprised, however, to learn that Mr. Keith Moon loved Surf music! He even cut a solo LP record album while visiting L.A. in '70, with covers of the Beach Boy's "Barbara Ann" and "Don't Worry Baby". ("Don't Worry Baby" is the LP title, for those interested). To me, this shows a side of Keith Moon that is more innocent and tender than the usual image of a destructive drug and alcohol fueled mad man. I wish that innocent side of Mr. Keith had had a greater opportunity to develop.
Today pick number five it is Mr Richard Starkey Ringo still at it with the All-Star group. Looking more and more youthful every year past 80. Albums The Beatles revolver The White album (I've got blisters on my fingers) Abbey Road Drums song Back off boogaloo Featuring some of his hardest hitting drums he ever did on tape And some of George Harrison's great slide guitar when they put the whole thing together just a fantastic drumming & guitar song And I also really enjoyed Ringo's great drumming on George Harrison's when we was Fab

Today my pick #5 is Ian Paice of Deep Purple. My three albums are In rock, Fireball, and Machine Head. Song with his best drum performance is the song Fireball
BERNIE PURDY - Another session player of the highest standard. Albums/performances: With Herbie Hancock on 1969s Fat Alberta Rotunda and Lil’ Brother; with Roy Ayers on his 1974 Charge up the groove and the title track, and with Steely Dan, The Royal Scam and Kid Charlemagne. Favourite performance, with Robert Palmer on his 1974 album Sneaking Sally through the Ally and the long track Through it all There’s You.
Todays choice is Roger Taylor of Queen. We saw Queen with Adam Lambert a couple of years ago and Roger's drumming was impressive. I think his singing is better , but that's just me.
I agree with Keith Moon, as a drummer myself if you were to ask most of these guys their biggest influence was Buddy Rich what a great jazz drummer. Sounds of 66 where he plays behind Sammy Davis Jr. incredible. Buddy has said his favorite drummer was Danny Seraphine listen to the first 3 albums. Introduction on CTA is great. And how about the duo of Butch Trucks and Jaimoe. When you listen to Duane and Dickey guitar solos listen to the drumming just pounding away. Hal Blaine played on almost every top hit in the 60,s and 70,s and Ringo kept a beat like no one else Thanks Russ
Phil Collins. So talented on drums (never mind his superb vocals). Albums - anything from Nursery Crime to Wind & Wuthering, best moment Supper's Ready.

Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel, Death) 15. Nigel Glockler (Saxon) 16. Ingo Schwichtenberg (Helloween) 17. Ken Owen (Carcass) 18. Charlie Benante (Anthrax) 19. Rat Skates (Overkill) 20. Moon is my top drummer of all time. #1 in my book. All the power plus amazing technical ability. Best album: Quadrophenia. Best song: Bell Boy. Thanks, Pete.
Day # 26, we are in the drummer Top 5 now, and my first pick goes to 5. COZY POWELL (Rainbow, Whitesnake, Sabbath + many more) The first time I heard that guy on the radio charts in the spring time of 1974, and I was thinking by myself: wtf, an instrumental of a drummer in the charts? I had never heard of Cozy Powell before, but was instantly impressed of his powerful drumming (of course, it's about his Top 10 single hit "Dance With The Devil"). Two years later I bought “Rainbow - Rising”, and I was surprised when I noticed that Cozy had joined the band of Ritchie and Ronnie. It was a pure hearing pleasure, with powerful played songs like “Tarot Woman”, “Stargazer” and “A Light In The Black”. Another real Rainbow gem later has been “Eyes Of The World” from 1979, with thundering drums from Cozy. Later on, in the 80s/90s, Cozy was drumming for Michael Schenker, Whitesnake, Gary Moore, Black Sabbath and Brian May’s solo band. He also had built a power trio with Keith Emerson and Greg Lake (Emerson, Lake & Powell) for an album and a tour. Apart from all that, he has done a lot of session work for many bands and musicians… way too much to know it all (just to name a few of them: Roger Daltrey, Jon Lord, Robert Plant, Donovan, Cinderella), the list is long, but it is a proof for his versability and his appreciation in the music scene. Unfortunately, Cozy died in a car crash in the year 1998 at age 50, but will always be remembered as one of the music world’s most impressive and powerful drummers. I often like to revisit some live concert videos here on yt with Cozy participating (Whitesnake Germany 1983, and Brian May at Brixton Academy, both with Cozy full of energy). 05. Cozy Powell 06. Barriemore Barlow 07. Nick Mason 08. Lee Kerslake 09. Roger Taylor 10. Bill Bruford 11. Bill Ward 12. Alan White 13. Mick Tucker 14. Chester Thompson 15. Mel Pritchard 16. Steve Negus 17. Chris Slade 18. Ringo Starr 19. Simon Kirke 20. Dennis Elliott 21. Russell Gilbrook 22. Don Henley 23. Phil Ehart 24. Nigel Olsson 25. Don Brewer 26. Graeme Edge 27. Charlie Watts 28. Bev Bevan 29. Bob Siebenberg 30. Clive Bunker
Toto/Joe Satriani's ... Simon Phillips Michael Schenker Group ... Self-Titled David Coverdale ... White Snake Judas Priest ... Sin After Sin Favorite Track: Jon Lord ... Bach Onto This (From Jon Lord's Before I Forget album. This is a rock out mash-up of classical Bach music. This being in response to Lord's old Deep Purple battery mate Ritchie Blackmore doing a rock take on Beethoven's Ninth as the title track of Rainbow's Difficult to Cure album. Bloody brilliant, if you have never heard it. Ironically, the keyboard player for Blackmore on that Beethoven's Ninth take, Don Airey, would become Jon Lord's replacement in Deep Purple after Lord's retirement.) Other work I own with Simon Phillips drumming... Gary Moore ... Back On the Streets Jack Bruce .. How's Tricks Joe Satriani ... Flying in a Blue Dream Bernie Marsden ... And About Time Too Gary Moore ... After the War Jack Bruce ... Cities of the Heart I've gotta own a lot more of Simon Phillips work than this... Well, they did declare it was only a partial list in Wikipedia. Simon also performed with.... Pete Townsend, Mick Jagger, The Who, Roxy Music, Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, Robert Palmer, Toto, The Pretenders, Asia, 801, Camel, Steve Hackett, Russ Ballard, Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford, Lee Ritenoir, Stanley Clarke, And more... He was Pete's number 28 pick, if you had forgotten... Hope you are doing well, Simon.
Great choice, Richard! This is my pick today too! Bach onto This is one of my favourites. I picked Head the Ball from Berny Marsden‘s album And About Time Too.
5. Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) * Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973) * Sabotage (1975) * Paranoid (1970) 6. Brian Downey 7. Vinnie Paul 8. Barriemore Barlow 9. Les Binks 10. Danny Carey 11. Mike Portnoy 12. Vinnie Appice 13. Scott Rockenfield 14. Clive Burr 15. Chuck Biscuits 16. Scott Travis 17. Nicko McBrain 18. Alex Van Halen 19. Mikkey Dee 20. Ian Paice 21. Albert Bouchard 22. Keith Moon 23. Matt Cameron 24. Nick Menza 25. Carl Palmer 26. Phil Rudd 27. Simon Phillips 28. Brann Dailor 29. Ginger Baker 30. Terry Bozzio
5. Neil Peart I guess, although I'm not a Rush fan. Incredible technician though and the drumming on Xanadu is great, even if it is a song with half a dozen intros, half a dozen outros and a twiddly bit in the middle.
Charlie Watts... The right drummer for the Rolling Stones. Not a metronome, but picked up a song and carried it through with swing but make no mistake he hit those drums hard. Never wanted to be a star, no big fills or solos. My favourite song is Monkey Man and favourite album is Get Your Ya Ya's Out (Charlie was good that night).
5. Ginger Baker (Cream, Blind Faith, Baker Gurvitz Army, Masters Of Reality) After watching the documentary on Ginger and seeing what a completely ornery bastard he was, it's easy to understand why his participation in bands didn't last long. It's also fitting that such a contemptible human being would be responsible for creating the template for all heavy rock drumming, from Keith Moon and John Bonham to Animal -- to get truly heavy, one has to unleash the beast now and then. "Tales of Brave Ulysses." Cream - Disraeli Gears (1967) Cream - Wheels Of Fire (1968) Cream - Fresh Cream (1966) 6. Stewart Copeland (The Police) 7. Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience) 8. Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) 9. Pete de Freitas (Echo & the Bunnymen) 10. Bev Bevan (The Move, ELO) 11. Dave Grohl (Nirvana, QOTSA, Probot, Them Crooked Vultures) 12. Dale Crover (Melvins, Nirvana) 13. Anton Fier (Pere Ubu, The Feelies, The Lounge Lizards, The Golden Palominos) 14. Joey Waronker (Walt Mink, Beck, R.E.M., The John Doe Thing, Ultraísta, Atoms For Peace) 15. Earl Hudson (Bad Brains) 16. Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins) 17. Matt Cameron (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam) 18. Frank Beard (ZZ Top) 19. Mario Duplantier (Gojira) 20. John "Drumbo" French (The Magic Band) 21. George Hurley (Minutemen, Firehose) 22. Dave Lombardo (Slayer) 23. David Ruffy (The Ruts) 24. Clem Burke (Blondie) 25. Brann Dailor (Mastodon) 26. Murph (Dinosaur Jr.) 27. Mac McNeilly (The Jesus Lizard) 28. Jon Theodore (Mars Volta, QOTSA) 29. Ramon "Tiki" Fullwood (Funkadelic) 30. Phil Rudd (AC/DC)
Pick number 5 from my side brings Tigran Kalebota - Tigi, drummer of Neronnwhich later became Psihomodo Pop in period from 1983 till 2017. Rock and punk rock band, album from 1988 Godina zmaja, song Ja volim samo sebe
Moon the Loon is a drummer and personality you can never forget. I even bought his only solo album on CD, you are very right Moon and Townsend played off of each other. A very different kind of thing with a band normally the drums go with the bass. watching the Who play there is a lot going on. Entwhistle dressed up and just standing and playing his bass like a virtuoso watching the others go crazy with Pete jumping and hoping doing the windmill, Roger swinging the microphone around and running and rocking in place. Then there is Keith going off uncontrollably on the drums and in the end when they were younger total destruction except John who loved his basses too much to destroy. I remember the Smothers Brothers show when Tommy said the Sloppy drummer and I don't think Keith liked that comment really. Then explosions and that probably contributed to Pete's Tinnitus. Pete felt really depressed for the death he was or felt responsible for and that was the final push that caused him to go over the edge which he was already standing on. I don't normally respond to all UA-cam videos but I always watch and like your content. I try to watch everything you do. Great subject matter and music really is my life and I always loved The Who and I know everyone in the band loved Keith Moon. Roger even did a song about Keith on his solo album. I know that you are familiar with "After The Fire" which always causes an emotional response from me. Music is a mood setter or mood changer and a memory that lives within us. When someone dies not like listening to music it blows my mind. Just like Keith blowing us away and blowing up his kit in The Who's younger days. Great job Pete!
Pick #5 - Steve Asheim, Deicide - The best death metal drummer of them all with insane cadence and precision. The "Once Upon The Cross" album is the best showcase of his work.
Pick 5: Ernest Carter Favourite Albums: 1) David Sancious & Tone - Dance Of The Age Of Enlightenment (1977) 2) David Sancious & Tone - Transformation (The Speed Of Love) (1976) 3) David Sancious & Tone - Forest Of Feelings (1975) 5) Ernest Carter 6) Fred White 7) Mike Clarke 8) Narada Michael Walden 9) Al Foster 10) Chester Thompson 11) Gerry Brown 12) Tony Williams 13) Billy Hart 14) Simon Kirke 15) John Bonham 16) Alphonse Mouzon 17) Omar Hakim 18) Terry Bozzio 19) Peter Erskine 20) Jimmy Cobb 21) Maurice White 22) Jack Dejohnnete 23) Jeff Pocaro 24) Alan White 25) Tiki Fulwood 26) Richard Bailey 27) Harvey Mason 28) Ralph Johnson 29) Don Henley 30) Yoshikuza Ogawa

My #5 pick is Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones. What a talented drummer he was. One of the coolest drummers ever. He was very loyal to his wife whom he was married to for 57 years. He wasn't interested in groupies, unlike his band members. Very much influenced by jazz. There is one story where Mick Jagger was very drunk at a hotel in the 80s. Jagger phones Watts's hotel room asking, "Where's my drummer?" Watts got up, shaved, dressed in a suit, put on a tie, shined shoes, went up the stairs and punched Jagger in the face. Watts saids, "Never call me your drummer again. You're my fucking singer!"
My #5 pick is an American musician. He is the drummer, percussionist, keyboardist and co-founder of the rock bands Creed, Alter Bridge, and Projected. I'm talking about Scott Phillips. Phillips cites the following drummers as his influences: Will Calhoun (Living Colour), Matt Cameron (Soundgarden/Pearl Jam), Lars Ulrich (Metallica), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Morgan Rose (Sevendust), and Neil Peart (Rush). His favorite bands are Living Colour, Tool, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Rush. His favorite albums are Time's Up (Living Colour), The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall (Pink Floyd), Led Zeppelin IV (Led Zeppelin), Master of Puppets (Metallica) and Superunknown (Soundgarden).Phillips has in the past used Premier Drums, but has recently been seen with DW Drums. Scott also uses Evans Drumheads, Zildjian cymbals, and Vic Firth drumsticks. Medium taper for a great balance. Diameter: .595" [1.51 cm], Length 16" [40.64 cm], Taper: Medium Albums-One Day Remains, The Last Hero and Blackbird Song- The Other Side
Don’t forget brand x

@@gaiaeternal5131 Great pick Dave. Carl was also one of my choices earlier in the month.

5 - Bill Bruford
Yes - Fragile, King Crimson - Red, UK - UK
So many great pieces from him it is hard to pick a favorite but today I will go with UK In the Dead of Night
#5. Clive Bunker
Ever since I heard the Aqualung album in 1971, I have been a huge fan of his drumming.
What a drummer !!🥁
Keith Moon is still to come for me.

Alex Van Halen is my pick today! 3 favorite albums he is on are Van Halen 1 and 2 and Fair Warning. Favorite drum performance by him is Outta Love Again off VH 2

Pick # 5: Keith John Moon/ Keith Moon: The Who
"Live at Leeds" released on Track/ Decca Records in '70
"Who's next?
Today pick number five it is Mr Richard Starkey

I agree with Keith Moon, as a drummer myself if you were to ask most of these guys their biggest influence was Buddy Rich what a great jazz drummer. Sounds of 66 where he plays behind Sammy Davis Jr. incredible. Buddy has said his favorite drummer was Danny Seraphine listen to the first 3 albums. Introduction on CTA is great. And how about the duo of Butch Trucks and Jaimoe. When you listen to Duane and Dickey guitar solos listen to the drumming just pounding away. Hal Blaine played on almost every top hit in the 60,s and 70,s and Ringo kept a beat like no one else

5. COZY POWELL (Rainbow, Whitesnake, Sabbath + many more)
The first time I heard that guy on the radio charts in the spring time of 1974, and I was thinking by myself: wtf, an instrumental of a drummer in the charts?

Toto/Joe Satriani's ... Simon Phillips
Michael Schenker Group ... Self-Titled
David Coverdale ... White Snake
Judas Priest ... Sin After Sin
Favorite Track:
Jon Lord ... Bach Onto This
(From Jon Lord's Before I Forget album.
Ironically, the keyboard player for Blackmore on that Beethoven's Ninth take, Don Airey, would become Jon Lord's replacement in Deep Purple after Lord's retirement.)
Other work I own with Simon Phillips drumming...
Gary Moore ... Back On the Streets
Jack Bruce .. How's Tricks
Joe Satriani ... Flying in a Blue Dream
Bernie Marsden ... And About Time Too
Gary Moore ... After the War
Jack Bruce ... Cities of the Heart

After watching the documentary on Ginger and seeing what a completely ornery bastard he was, it's easy to understand why his participation in bands didn't last long. Great choice. I picked him out earlier.
Jean-Paul Gaster. I like his drumming on everything he does including the Bakerton Group.

Classic pick, Takoda, and terrific story.
My favorite Keith Moon performance is Bargain, in fact i think it's my favorite drum recording by anyone
🤘😝
It’s your channel , your allowed to cheat 🤟🤟
