I have big time issues with this problem. Doctors tell me nothing needs to be done with it, just keep taking the meds given to me and see me in another six months.
Problems have been getting worse. My wife says she thinks much more could be done about it, but here I sit and suffer away.

Omg! Thank you so much for this video! I just found out that I have a hiatal hernia a week ago. I went in for a endoscopy and colonoscopy due to abdominal pain and constipation which I have had both for years, and the endoscopy showed the hernia, which was a complete surprise to me. After watching your video however, I realized that all the symptoms you mentioned I have had for years and continue to suffer from them. I guess I have a lot more to talk to my doctor about than I thought. Thank you so much for this!

If you're told that hiatal hernias are typically asymptomatic, realize that isn't true. Feel free to contact me for a consultation - 408-733-0400. I'm happy to help.

great video, this happened to me earlier this year, I have confirmed small hiatal hernia, I have been working through it, what you are saying is exactly accurate, thank you, also I might end up calling you if I don't get back to perfect shape soon, im on my 10th month dealing with this issue. I was misdiagnosed with anxiety among other things[tested negative for sleep apnea, brain scanned are negative, spinal tap negative, etc etc, I have been through the wringer this year with hundred of blood tests, sadly about 60 of those were the exact same tests that were all performed in emergency rooms, oh yeah I went to the ER 10 times this year, from severe chest pain, high blood pressure [ over 200 ] couldn't breathe, extreme fatigue, etc etc, it really beat me down. took over 9 months to figure out it was even a hernia...the CT ANGIOGRAM found it, BY ACCIDENT...…..I was told its not a big deal, and they are not sure why I have the symptoms I have, the pcp thinks I should go see a psychologist, the psychologists thinks I need to get fixed physically and nothing is wrong with me mentally...so here we are...and I say this in public so you know, stuff happens, find the ROOT CAUSE and fix it. great work Dr. Petersen, appreciate it!

I’m glad I found this video. I have been having chest pain and chest burning for the past month. Once during that time I felt a little pressure when I swallowed my food. It hasn’t happened again. I had a barium swallow last week and it showed a small hiatal hernia. I was prescribed a ppi that I have been on for a week now. I still feel a little burning in my chest at times and that one spot where I had the chest pain still feels sore. I’m wondering if I should ask for an endoscopy or if the barium swallow is enough to make sure it’s nothing else….my doctor thinks to give the ppi’s some time to work.

INot one PPI helps. now they have been trying the use of bile reflux meds. They ALL make me sick , that along with my symptoms has been devistating on my mental and physical being. For over two years I have basicly laid in bed pleading with god to help me. I suffer with and without medication. I am at the end of my rope and am so sick of the shuffle. I now have chronic gasteritus and the constipation is constant which has led me to have a prolaps bladder... Im going crazy.. yep Im one of the ones ....

I have all of this including a lifetime of chronic constipation and recently much more acute. I recently learned that I have sleep apnea, together with the hiatal hernia, and silent reflux which has damaged the vocal cords. I am supposed to have an endoscopy and colonoscopy but I am waiting for the referral. It cannot happen soon enough for me. I’m miserable. All of my symptoms seemed dramatically to worsen during the entirety of the two months subsequent to my taking Levaquin. I assume the Levaquin exacerbated the esophagitis and gastritis and basically sent my system into a downward cascade. Everything is worsening. I think I have one problem solved and another one, just as alarming, comes up.

But I do have muscle hypertension due to stress, so I think it’ likely that my stomach is clenching. I sometimes feel better after pushing my stomach back down, it really seems like its from the hernia

In search of support. Will try and be brief. Many years ago (minimum 6, maximum 20) I began having different health issues at different times. But I will focus on the most acute onset. 6 yrs. I took opioids, chronic constipation, chronic straining for years at least a few times a week in the rest room. Gave myself a known hernia in groin. Around 2016 I have a sudden mysterious onset of severe pain under my shoulder blade. Felt like something was out of place. Over a few days, my entire left side had lightning nerve pain through my back, shoulder, neck, left arm, etc. - The pain over the years has come and gone in waves. Went to a lot of spine docs. Tons of MRI, x-ray, etc by Spinal docs, saw nothing, did tons of shots in neck and shoulders and such. What's more - other mysterious occurences were happening that I thought were all different little quirks. Seemed like so many things were off with me. List goes - When swallowing, feels like stuff gets stuck, need lots of water to get it down. Constipation - and I've finally realized that as easy as I try and take it, bouts of straining cause this issue to flare up. Makes sense now. Anyway, constant belching, passing gas. Constant throat clearing. When I breathe in as deep as I can go, something stops it in pain and tells me to stop breathing in. Sometimes when I am talking, I get really winded. Anyway when I payed close attention while on the THC the one night, I could feel like a lightning signal through my body a path of pain from my left side of my head down my neck, through my abdomen. Didn't know anything about the anatomy of that area at all beforehand. Googled bodily nerves, found the Vagus nerve. It appears to run in an identical path that I felt the lightning pins and needles feeling. Like absolutely identical. Speculation - Years of chronic constipation both before and during opioid use caused 2 hernias. One in groin (already diagnosed, red flag there). And one other hernia. Either hiatal, or the other one that can happen at the top. Restricting my diaphragm movement. Diaphragm/stomach spasms, vagus nerve pinched - Severe pain along the path of it, as well as peripheral muscles going into spasm to attempt to protect or reduce pressure on the nerve. When I am upright and active, as long as the muscles are tight, pain is reduced. When I relax to go to sleep or such, or if I puff CBD and the muscles relax, the pain actually gets much worse. I also suffer cognitive issues, poor concentration, low energy, unrestful sleep, heart palpatations, everything I hear about the hiatal hernia makes 100% sense. It seems I strained for years and gave myself hernias. Now my whole system is out of balance from the hernia? Maybe pinching the vegus nerve, and inflammation affecting the muscles in my neck, shoulders, back, mostly left side where the hernia could be. Lump under my arm pit as well, could be unrelated, or could be perhaps the spasms for years and such triggered thoracic outlet syndrome. Feels like my collarbone is pressing down on a nerve or something. Maybe the hernia is so big it pushed things up, and is causing a nerve elsewhere to be pressed? Could be the vegus or multiple nerves involved? As I think back, constipation was at a peak just before the most acute onset of this pain. Sometimes after eating, I can't breathe in all the way or it hurts. I'm telling ya, I definitely am starting to think it's far more likely all of these mysterious and random symptoms (even bad breath!) are all caused by 1-2 issues. Not 20 separate issues. Please, anyone who can offer help or support, I live with so much pain. I am finally feeling hopeful of my physical wellbeing and I want to check for hernia and have hernia surgery to correct the known hernia, as well as if a second hernia is diagnosed correct that one too. Any feedback or suggestions on how I can get surgery for it or who I need to see would be much appreciated. I live in North Conway NH. Small town. Just want to finally be free of this pain and imbalance in my body. Doctors all treated my spine and muscles, when they never diagnosed the cause! They all said they simply couldn't identify a cause, yet still had no problem going right to work. All kinds of meds, all kinds of this and that. It can't be my spine or discs, none of that makes sense! Anyway, I have been opioid free for 4 years, quit smoking, 0 alcohol, no substances at all. Love my life, absolutely in love with life, I just want to address the damage done so I can have my physical health back and get to the gym and be in the best health of my life!

You describe my exact symptoms of late. I have a small hiatal hernia and I randomly get attacks of shortness of breath which can last me a few hours, pressure on my chest for which I have had my heart tested various times (heart is all good), which in turn gave me panic attacks! One thing as well i'm not sure is related is for years I have had thoracic back pain. It's a deep pain that feels like it goes through my spine. Sometimes, the back pain is worse than other times I'm wondering whether this is related to the hiatus hernia? I'm in Australia so i'm wondering what other options I have to treat all these symptoms without going on medication? Thank you so much.

Hi Dr Petersen. This is a long shot however, as I live in Lanzarote, Canary Islands do you think there may be any chance of finding someone here that may be able to help me? I have been advised I have a hiatal hernia but that it’s not serious enough for surgery at the moment, I have suffered with daily neck pain for 2 years or more and pretty much always in the same area. It’s mostly on the right hand side of my head at the base of my skull. I also suffer from pain across my shoulders. I have had to resort to taking painkillers daily in order to cope as I was simply miserable. From what you say it´s possible that this is connected with the hernia. How would I go about trying to get some written information to take to my next hospital appointment so that I can translate it into Spanish. I do have an excellent chiropractor who I visit in England when I return there sometimes (that´s where I’m from originally) however due to COVID it’s unlikely Í’ll be going there for a while. That said, I’m sure he would be very interested to hear about this. He may have heard of it already of course. I haveńt asked him about it as Íve not been to him for a while.
I’d be really grateful for any help you may be able to offer as I’m really fed up with taking painkillers to resolve this issue

Hi Debbie. I'm so sorry you're suffering with this. Is there a good Physical Therapist or local Chiropractor? It's true that few doctors understand hiatal hernia syndrome. I'd like to see if getting you some physical help might reduce your pain levels until you're able to get back home to the chiropractor you trust. I wish I had an easy solution for you. I am fit and athletic yet one day symptoms started pouring on me:
    - Vertigo, dizziness
    - shortness of breath
    - panic attacks and severe anxiety
    - getting exhausted even after taking 3 flights of stairs, which caused more panic attack
    - heart palpitations
    - shaking and trembling and hot flashes
    - light headedness and feeling of fainting
    - numb legs
    - brain fog
    - abdominal pain
    - belching and burping all day
I thought something was seriously wrong with me; went to the ER, everything is fine. Went to a cardiologist did ECG and bloodwork, everything fine they said, yet I was feeling terribly sick. After visiting a GI it turns out I had H. Pylori infection and a 3cm Hiatal Hernia.
Never in my life did I ever think that something in the stomach would cause me all these symptoms.
I cured the H. Pylori, but the Hernia still persists :/

I had no idea that panic attacks, anxiety, insomnia ( I do not achieve REM sleep often) fatigue and shortness of breath were associated with this large hiatal hernia. DANG. My stomach sits near my lungs with this condition. It is imperative that I restrict my portions and yet I am overweight. Additionally, I had an esophageal ulcer in the late 1980s.I wonder if that was related.
I was diagnosed with a large hiatal hernia three years ago. The VAMC surgeons did not want to operate. Maybe that was a good idea. (If a VA surgeon says you can live without their operating on you... you might not want to test that at the VAMC).

Oh doc! I think this might be what I have. Rib (area) pain for 3+ years. Started after a stressful time, and I was exercising vigorously daily. Drs can’t figure it out. Clean bill from cardiologist, vq lung scan, chest X-rays (no contrast). I thought I was dying 3 years ago but I’m still here! Now drs say costocondritis, then fibromyalgia, then mayofacial pain syndrome. No pills have helped! Ppi, nerve meds, antidepressants for pain, etc. nothing has helped except stretching. Good nights sleep help, too little sleep causes a flair up. Overeating cause a flair up. Chest exercise cause a flair up. All the hiatal hernia self treatments are exactly what I discovered on my own and it’s exactly the same, one of the only thing that brings relief. Could this have been missed on xrays? Why does it mimic rib pain, or chest pain. Only effects left side just along the loner rib. Wraps around to the back. Just recently realized the pain flairs up about 45 min after eating.....

@@daviddavis4784 After years of relaxing the muscles it finally started to ease up. My doctor thinks its a nerve issue. Maybe the intercostal muscles or ribs, or even gastrointestinal, but is a form of myofascial pain syndrome closely related to fibromyalgia. Almost no meds helped. I never tried narcotics, and dont think it warrants it. When it started I thought I was having a heart attack. Basically the doc thinks an normal injury cause nerve damage, and the nerves had to re-learn what pain was vs normal resting sensation. Its taken years to get even almost to where I dont know its there sometimes. I also now have a similar issue in the lower back, right side. There are pressure points that myofascial pain syndrome is known to affect (some or all). Hope that helps

Im suffering terribly with autoimmune symptoms, also lately stomach ache and nausea just after eating, have gone onto a juice mainly and brown rice diet, I must have leaky gut, I have taken PPI's (prilosec) for 22yrs and I assume the chronic low acid levels have allowed bad bacteria to migrate and feed on partially digested food there and release toxins that have hurt my gut, I have tried coming off prilosec but I get pains and acid reflux from hell when I try stopping but I know I have to stop somehow cause my leaky gut seems to be getting worse, the list of foods I react to is getting longer and foods I can eat getting shorter, I became gluten intolerant 6yrs ago, then dairy intolerant 3 yrs ago, recently corn, most packaged foods and now kefir, sauerkraut and yogurts and even probiotic suppements, I did some research and found out that many fermented foods have good bacteria that are not so friendly as they increase histamine release, some are supposed to reduce it and some increase it.
And so take Glutamine, Collagen and bone broth then ... I hear someone cry out. Those 3 give me weird autoimmune symptoms as well, my left ear becomes bright red and hot as hell for hours, I did some digging and found an autoimmune disease called relapsing polychondritis that affects the cartilage of the ear and other parts of the body, can be fatal, from my limited understanding Im getting a certain inflammatory reaction to those 3, it could be the Lead or heavy metals in bone broths seeing as I dont react to chicken or muscle/organ meats, and cabbage I can eat and juice so Im okay with glutamine but maybe the amount of glutamine in bone broth is massive compared to cabbage.
How can I heal? I mean some probiotics are not good for me seeing as they trigger histamine release and autoimmune reactions like sneezing, runny nose etc., Im so fed up and feel like going back to basics, i.e. eat like a caveman fresh meat and fresh vegetables and nothing made by man, not even supplements AND of course come off the PPI, any ideas guys please let me know, thanks.
How the heck do I reduce hiatal hernia symptoms or sliding so that I can stop taking prilosec? I was diagnosed with sliding hiatal hernia maybe 10yrs ago but cant see any lump in the pit of my stomach, I do massage this area down daily nd do abdominal breathing as well.
After 22yrs Im at my wits end!!! I suppose Ive answered my own question, I need to come off PPI's.

It is possible for a hiatal hernia to cause an esophageal ulcer. The fact of H. pylori being negative does not negate the potential for stomach acid to be moving upwards from the stomach to the esophagus, causing the ulcer. I agree, acid blockers are not the way to go.

I have had a unnusually bloated abdomen for the last year like I'm 6 months pregnant and have gained more weight than usual I'm 57 and not on any medicatuon but hormones and blood pressure that just got high the last few yrs from a lifetime of 99 over 74 ( or barely alive as usual my dr would joke ) I had a hysterectomy at 29 after 5 laparoscopies to treat symptoms related to DES exposure that gave me a bicornate uterus at birth and had 3 live 8 month births one footling breech 4lbs one posterior 4' lbs 11 oz and one normal at 5 lbs 3 oz . no cesareans. my appendix was elongated like a snake but healthy and removed during my hysterectomy just because it was so unusual looking he said probably a result of the DES So if I have been overdoing lifting cleaning houses rescuing dogs and over exerting myself ( like pulling large wagons full of soil uphill to level and fill a small 1000sq ft yard with 4 inches of soil over 3 months could these twisting and cramping spasms kicking my ass be serious hernia because I feel like I'm imploding sometimes or something is gonna jump out of my abdominal cavity in all directions

This describes me to a T! In April I woke up around 1 am feeling very funny. It was so bad that I felt like I was going to have a panic attack. I paced the floor, then the nausea hit. My husband had to take me to the er where they found nothing. I had horrible nausea for the next 5 days and was barely eating or drinking. At night when I tried to go to sleep, my breath would catch every time I would exhale. It was awful. On day 6 I was back in the er, had lost 10 lbs, my chest felt funny and still no answers but they admitted me because I was so dehydrated. I thought it was my heart. They kept a heart monitor on me and also done an echo. They found nothing. I was in horrible shape but they sent me home after 2 days. I managed to find a great internal medicine dr who set up an appointment for an upper gi. I was diagnosed with a small sliding hiatal hernia. About 2 days after the initial dr visit I started feeling like something was stuck in my chest. It has been pure misery. I have a consultation with a surgeon on June 1st. I am pretty nervous about it because my daughter had the surgery in 2014 and the surgeon ruined her. She now has gastroparesis. I have another friend who also had it done by the same surgeon who done my daughter's and he ruined her too. She can barely eat and has to take zofran 3 times a day. I pray that the surgeon that I am going to does a great job. It has been so stressful. Upper gi also showed reflux but I don't experience any burning just the other awful symptoms. Not to mention that I have to sleep sitting propped up on the couch. I cannot lay down at all.

With all the negative surgery results, have you considered less invasive therapy as a first-line approach? Hiatal hernia surgery has poor outcomes generally speaking and unless part of your stomach is stuck above your diaphragm, making surgery an absolute necessity, I would consider non-invasive treatment at least to start. You can call us for a consultation: 408-733-0400.

I live too far away for a consult. I do know several people that have had successful outcomes but I know 2 that hadn't. I wish that I were closer because I would definitely reconsider.

    Hope you can answer this.
About 6 months ago I developed a horrible, wheezing cough that slowly disappeared, only to be replaced by: tension in my diaphragm area, constant need to clear throat, lump in throat, burping, and a general feeling of discomfort in my lungs. I was diagnosed with LPR (after self-diagnosing myself), but changing my diet and lifestyle doesn't seem to help much. I've started drifting toward the idea that I have a hiatal hernia or vagus nerve issues.
Do you think my symptoms are consistent with this?
PS: I used to have horrendous anxiety attacks, but those pretty much went away a couple of years ago.

    • @L4JRapture
      @L4JRapture 7 років тому +1

Excessive burping is a hallmark of hiatal hernia, also the throat clearing, "lump in throat" sensation, etc. You should get checked out for it.

Thanks so much for this video!! I've been having these issues for 15 years!!! Thanks for especially talking about the panic attacks and the nerve problems. I feel like my vagus nerve has been damaged as a result of this. I never knew about the chiropractor stuff. I wish you were in Canada to heal me. What should I ask a chiropractor to do? I know my panic attacks are a direct result of this issue and I get a pounding sensation in the ears. And heart palpitations.

About 6 months ago I started feeling a weird sensation in my diaphragm area almost like a spasm and when I would check my pulse I would get PVCs and extra heartbeats I went to the ER several times they kept saying it was anxiety eventually they found that I had h-pylori they put me on beta blockers for my many PVCs but I am noticing them anytime I eat food and my heart races or if I'm bending over. I finally did an endoscopy and they found a small hiatal hernia, redness and inflammation, it makes me wonder if the inflammation is what's causing all my symptoms or the actual hernia itself even though it's small but it's to the point where I can't sit down or slouched over for even a few minutes because I get pressure and sensitivity in my diaphragm that moves up into my chest and then I get PVCs and palpitations. Even thought it's small can a hiatal hernia do this. I never had this issue before. Some of my research has led me to believe the vagus nerve may be an issue as well because my emotions are all screwed up and anytime I feel an emotion I get PVCs or my heart races. Ive also had circulation issues which I'm not sure was caused by the inflammation. My fingers would turn white when fingers extended straight also cold feet with some slight numbness which has been going on for months. Seems to be a bit better now. Also is the vagus nerve situated near the diaphragm where the hernia may interfere with?

Our you taking PPI's for reflux? If so they could be blocking Vitamin B12 absorption, in which case can course numbness and poor circulation. Look into it 😊

I told my Dr ....he did a EKG and listened to my heart noting that I have no shortness of breath etc related to heart trouble ...he blew it off but it is worse and worse ....I am thinking either I have a tumor or this hiatal hernia ....any comments? Other than my crappy dr? Also I am diagnosed before these symptoms with panic attacks.....I am in so cal
