Your instructional videos were good to begin with Pete, but over the last while you’ve really gone up to the next level. I think they are first class and easily understandable at a pace that is not boring. You don’t skip things but you take each step methodically and explain things crystal clear. I think you’ve found a new groove, Pete. You make world class instructional videos. Kudos and congratulations! 🏆
I used inexpensive lightning adapter from Amazon and transferred very heavy files from IPad to Kingston 128GB SD card ( US$20) Worked perfectly. Unexpectedly fast. Perfect answer to storage problems.
Nice one! Glad it worked out for you. I haven't had a lot of luck with non-Apple adapters, but if it worked for you, that's great! Hopefully it continues working as well in the future. 👍
Bought the Apple USB3 and lightning adapter from Amazon as recommended on your link. This adapter is NOT compatible with my iPad Pro 11 (2018). Apparently I need. a usbC adapter. Now what? Will that adapter also need a power port?
Hey there. Yes; newer iPads use USB-C but the good news is you can use pretty much any USB-C adapter to connect. Power management is better but it’s still a good idea to have a powered hub. I talk about my setup here. ua-cam.com/video/yzIyqkB-7CA/v-deo.html
I got a scandisk that is SUPPOSED to work for iPad 5th gen, but isn't showing in drive. Tried to download iXpand flash drive app but iPad says no room but have 807MB of iCloud storage remaining. Thughts?Guidance?
🙏🏻 thank you for the info.. just bought one of these cables... iphone so full can't budge... now if I delete the original photos in my iPhone ... will that delete action on my Iphone then cause the photos (copies ie backups ) in the cloud to also delete when they synch and update .🤔🤔🤔 which storage has priority
Hey there. So iCloud is a little flawed. If you delete on a device it also deletes the backup. 🤦🏻♂️ So you’d need to backup somewhere else (USB drive, google Drive etc) and then delete. Weirdly if you run out of space it will “offload” some iCloud data without deleting it from iCloud. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
I have the first iPad pro that came out. I followed your instructions/equipment and haven’t a clue where I’m to go from there. I’ve searched through my settings and don’t find anything that looks like you are showing. Help!
Pete do you have a video for this please for iPad version 12 as mine is a mini 2 and just bought camera adapter as I want to get photos from Dropbox onto USB. I would be most grateful thank you
Hi there. Unfortunately iOS 12 does not support USB drives at all. You would need to update your device or use a drive like this. ua-cam.com/video/Vk3pgwzW7jA/v-deo.html
Hey Pete! I was wondering if you might know why my photos and videos won’t display on my laptop? It says file unsupported but they’re fine when I connect the USB to my phone to look at them.
Ipad mini 5 note: You don't get options when you get the "save to files" button. Just press it and when it is ready it takes you to the files page and then you choose to save to the connected USB and then press save on top right. Little different but I might have saved someone an hour 🙂. Thanks for this video.
I normally use the Sandisk iXpand but my new one had suddenly gotten loose on the lighting connector. Everything else connects to my phone so it's the iXpand usb that's busted, so I was looking for an alternative this will be great I think. This is the best video I've seen you explain everything I was googling and more in great detail. Much appreciated mate. Thank you.
Hi I’m trying to download a video using the adapter with the power plug in it downloads the video but I cannot play it on my Windows computer do you know how. Thanks
I don't get the share sheet, just a list of other options in a small window, nor does it say x number of photos selected even though the blue check mark is on the photos. I get an add to album, but no save to files.
Great video, thanks Pete. I have not been able to save full resolution images from Photos to files with iPadOS. It only saves a reduced version of the original. Do you know of a way around this? I’ve tried setting photos to ‘keep originals’ in Settings, but same results.
Thanks for sharing this. I’ve been able to don this for a while using a WD WiFi SSD. It’s way better with the files app and USB-C now. I sure hope they give us the ability to actually “transfer” stuff some day. As much as I like my iPad it feels like I’m swimming up stream with data transfers.
Would be nice to see better support. Thankfully there are other optoins and the market will eventually decide which products are worthy of our hard earned $$.
I did a photo shoot awhile ago, and did a little networking and lots of ppl told me I need a USB flash drive but How can I transfer photos from usb flash drive to My iPhone? I want to transfer them to my photo gallery
Doh! Nope. You'll need something that creates an actual USB bridge instead which allows data transfer, which is why I recommend the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter. studiolivetoday.com/usb
Can someone help me here please? IPad 6th generation with IOS14, brand new Lightning to USB 3 adapter, brand new SanDisk 64GB thumb drive formatted to FAT. Now, when I select my photos to save and I go to "Save to Files" I don't get any options, instead, I get a dialog box telling me I don't have enough disk space. HELP!!
@@PeteJohnsMusic I called Apple support and after troubleshooting the issue they discovered that the iPad 6th generation is not compatible with the Lightning USB 3 adapter.
I know this was made a while ago, but this seems to be the best option for transferring a ton of pics. I noticed that they don't transfer as "live photos". Is there any way to maintain the live feature when putting them on the USB stick?
Thanks very much. One question: how long would you expect it would take to download 200 photos from an ipad to a flash drive in the manner you describe? I found that it took over an hour. Is this an expected time?
Yes it’s quite slow due to the USB 2.0 speeds in iOS. These days using cloud storage like iCloud Drive, Google Drive etc is generally quicker and better.
Please can you help me? I have saved some photos & videos to my usb and when I try to view them on my windows PC it says I am unable to view them. Has it’s happened to you / is there a solution please? Any help / advise would me really appreciated. Thanks.
Hey there. You might need an image viewer that supports more file types? Maybe search around online for a free image viewer that can view the types of files. Or use something like Google Photos to share instead.
I was wonder if you could answer question for me I don’t have any issues transferring files to a flash drive or a hard drive and moving them from my iPad to my PC. The issue that I’m having is that I get duplicate files. One of the files I can view with no issues. The other file will have the same file name or number but you cannot view it. Is there any way to stop this from happening? Its a pain to delete the unusable files every time I transfer.
Yeah I must admit that I have experienced this recently and not quite sure what’s causing it? It is quite annoying. Hopefully Apple are are and may fix this bug. I would suggest reporting it too.
Ok so I love your explanations: appears wireless Apple has gone BACK TO the early 2000s. I’m okay with that, I remember sooooo much of attaching this port to that port.. it is the only way I feel in control of what I’m working with. Remembering passwords on every electronic tablet etc is exhausting. I’m old school - put this to that, then press done. Ty so much. I’ve been away from my fun projects because of wifi latency, this is my morning oatmeal. Ty again!!! Subscribed
you have the best explanatory videos. I thank you so much for this. I am just getting started on recording with video and music on a new ipad and iphone so I need this instruction .thank you for actually showing what plugs into what; so many people do not do that! They just say it. I need to see it. so thanks again.
Thanks a bunch. Great explanation, easy to understand. But i notice that all the pics i transfer do not show the date they were originally taken. Solution? I have 50 gb of pics / videos / screen shots that i am trying to get off my icloud so I can stop paying every month for the storage.
I picked up the ORICO usb 3.0 4 port hub on amazon, also a SanDisk T5 1 TB SSD drive and an Anker micro sd usb card reader and iPadOS will mount both and you can copy files back and forth to your heart’s content.
never got my 1tb hard drive to connect but its not ssd and maybe it was taking like FOREVER to finish reading the file structure of the drive on the first go around..... have not tested it again but will one of these days when I feel up to it....
Let me know how you get on Wayne. It seems to be a little random as to what works and what does not. Smaller flash based drives that are FAT formatted seem to be the most reliable.
If a person is really worried about totally losing fotos, mention that they can transfer to the 2nd backup prior to deleting from iphone/ipad - this way also helps in the event that the thumb drive is faulty (you would find out prior to deleting the iphone/ipad foto) and nothing would be lost.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks. Can you please answer my other question? aah it's deleted🤔 Will the one available in apple store allows me to transfer from iPhone to USB? Apple only mentioned that photos can be copied from camera to iphone. They didn't mention other way around. As the link you shared isn't available in amazon, want to try out from Apple store, but want to make sure it works the way you showed in video. Thanks.
Pete! Great info video for USB transfer from iPad! You totally Rock! I’ve been following you for five plus years starting with Garage Band videos! Have a prosperous 2024 down under!
Thanks Pete! One thing, I already know that with Apple the transfer of photos from iPad to pendrive will be slow, but I have seen that in this video and also in others, the transfer is still quite faster than mine, I have a kingston 100 G3 pendrive and a mini adapter (it's one of the small ones, honestly I don't know the brand of mine) to increase the speed, would you recommend changing the adapter, the pendrive, or both? (A speed of 0.5 Mb / s would already suit me very well) Thank you very much and sorry for the long message
@@PeteJohnsMusic Yes, I Know that Cloud services are pretty faster, but could you tell me if the speed depends on the adapter, the pendrive or in both? (I ask because in the video and in other ones the transfer is still quite faster than mine)
Thanks so much! I had no idea how to do this or where to look to see where my flash drive would show on my iphone. I did make the mistake of buying the standard Lightning to USB Camera Adapter with not charging port. Like you said, the USB takes power and it would't work until I bought the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter with the charging port, after that, everything worked fine.
080322/0546h PST 🇺🇸 Greetings from California. Pete, thank you for the tip to DL the images from iPads/iPhones. I saw your presentation only today and soon rushed to store for Sandisk 512 GB. Hey there my friend. Yes, I’m not a fan of this for larger files. I tend to use the WiFi Drive function of the AudioShare app which has much better speed. ua-cam.com/video/4oIejCXh1TQ/v-deo.html
I actually tried to export around 900 photos, and a few of those are videos, ALL AT ONCE. Guess what, it didn’t transferred. It said there was an error and stuff. IT TOOK A WHILE, and by a while, i mean over a few hours for those 900 files to transfer that didn’t even worked out. And it also corrupted some files on my flash drive when the process turned into an error 😑 so don’t know what to do
Hey Pete I bought the camera adapter the one shown in this video. I tried to connect it with my 2 TB hard drive to transfer photos however it’s not connecting. Have an IPad Mini Model A 1432. Thing was a gift from a friend. It runs OS 9.3.5. Cannot be upgraded to OS10 at this point in its life. Just this side of becoming a freaking paperweight. Have about 490 photos on it. Would really rather not try to email them out of the system.... Tried hooking it up to my Desktop Windows PC, which recognizes the iPad, and I can read stuff ab0ut it through iTunes on my PC, but any attempts to sync or download or whatever almost immediately result in an error box saying the attempt failed. Might be because my Desktop is still happily perking along on Windows XP. Pretty sure this model iPad doesn't have any kind of USB support... Extremely frustrating. Guess you can tell I am not a techie.... Tried bluetooth.... it just spins and never recognizes or connects to anything else, even if they are sitting next to each other on the same tabletop... Not sure at this point how to get the pix out of it. Two steps away from throwing it into the driveway and running my truck over it.
Hmmmm.... yeah there aren’t any apps that support any sort of WiFi transfer and can run in iOS 9 as far as I know? For newer devices you can use something like this. It don’t think it would work with the older iPad - ua-cam.com/video/FVWVlGtK4rY/v-deo.html
Pete I was under the impression that google photos transfers to iCloud and all photos are available there so I can delete off iPad . Is this USB just a second backup? Also... do you have any videos on this mysterious “other” that takes up an enormous amount of space ? 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Hey Marion. Lovely to hear from you as always. So yes, Google Photos can do a good job, but I find the upload time and quality to be an issue sometimes. For just your day to day photos it’s great, but because I use my photos and videos in video projects I like to keep copies of the high quality, full resolution versions sometimes. “Other” is generally anything that Apple can’t categorise which is mostly system files and iOS files that you can’t do much about.
So I’ve done this but when I open the photos in windows it shows “._image” and doesn’t allow me to open them. I’d there a fix to this? (Yes it’s converted to FAT32 as well. Thanks
Did as Pete demonstrated in his video. I have a 7th Generation iPad which is the latest generation, running software 14.7.1 again is the latest version. Purchased Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter. Plugged it into the iPad, inserted USB Drive in USB port and attached external power. I tried a power bank, wall outlet and powered USB Hub. I get the following message: Cannot Use Accessory Flash Drive: This accessory requires too much power. No idea what's going on. Any suggestions???

Google Photos storage is definitely good and I use it also. iCloud Drive is good for backups of iOS devices, especially if you have a lot.
Pete Johns I
Can I buy lightening to USB Adapter only? Or do I have to buy lightening to USB Adapter 3 to transfer files?
Personally, I have found that the Lightning port for extra power is required unless you have a powered USB hub.
Does it stamp the date of the original photo or the date it was transferred to the drive?
Transferred unfortunately which is a bummer.
What is the connector gender supposed to be, male or female?

I’ve had this happen so many times and have researched some but have yet to find a reason or solution 🙁 drives excellent nuts
Yes, but is it possible to copy some photos and vids from usb drive to iphone?
Sort of. It’s easier using wifi these days.
ua-cam.com/video/4oIejCXh1TQ/v-deo.html
Ok so I love your explanations: appears wireless Apple has gone BACK TO the early 2000s. I’m okay with that, I remember sooooo much of attaching this port to that port.. it is the only way I feel in control of what I’m working with. Remembering passwords on every electronic tablet etc is exhausting.
I’m old school - put this to that, then press done. Ty so much. I’ve been away from my fun projects because of wifi latency, this is my morning oatmeal. Ty again!!! Subscribed
Thanks my friend. Glad to hear it helped.
When you pressed “save to files” the other options at 5:34 don’t show
Hey there. It didn’t look up the file locations? It can take 10-20 seconds depending on how many files and folders you have to pop up.
you have the best explanatory videos. I thank you so much for this. I am just getting started on recording with video and music on a new ipad and iphone so I need this instruction .thank you for actually showing what plugs into what; so many people do not do that! They just say it. I need to see it. so thanks again.
Great to hear Billy. Appreciate the kind words.
Thanks a bunch. Great explanation, easy to understand. But i notice that all the pics i transfer do not show the date they were originally taken. Solution? I have 50 gb of pics / videos / screen shots that i am trying to get off my icloud so I can stop paying every month for the storage.
Yeah unfortunately that’s one of the major drawbacks. I would recommend using something like Google Photos.
I picked up the ORICO usb 3.0 4 port hub on amazon, also a SanDisk T5 1 TB SSD drive and an Anker micro sd usb card reader and iPadOS will mount both and you can copy files back and forth to your heart’s content.
Brilliant!! What’s the speed like? I’ve heard larger files can be quite slow?
never got my 1tb hard drive to connect but its not ssd and maybe it was taking like FOREVER to finish reading the file structure of the drive on the first go around..... have not tested it again but will one of these days when I feel up to it....
Let me know how you get on Wayne. It seems to be a little random as to what works and what does not. Smaller flash based drives that are FAT formatted seem to be the most reliable.
Can I do this with a 3.0 USB flash drive and plug the adapter into my phone? I have an 11 pro max.
You’ll need the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter. studiolivetoday.com/usb
@@PeteJohnsMusic so I can get the Apple adapter from Apple itself and use the 3.0 usb and plug it into my phone and it will work ?
There's no way to move them? No copying.
I don’t believe so. I tend to use cloud storage these days.
Will this work with iOS 15 using an iPhone?
Yup sure will. Just follow the instructions especially related to genuine adapters and power. studiolivetoday.com/usb
If a person is really worried about totally losing fotos, mention that they can transfer to the 2nd backup prior to deleting from iphone/ipad - this way also helps in the event that the thumb drive is faulty (you would find out prior to deleting the iphone/ipad foto) and nothing would be lost.
Totally. The more backups and locations the better.
Doesn’t work for me, ExFAT, if you select more then 100 you won’t able to transfer, error
Really? You might need to transfer to Files forts in that case. Or zip up the files first. ua-cam.com/video/QzC6J8F5W9M/v-deo.html
Thanks for the video . The amazon link u shared is currently unavailable
Yeah bummer! Unfortunately they do sell out sometimes.
Thanks.
So after we transfer it to the usb drive we cna delete it
And if we ever want to see them again we would just plug it in and click the folder
Does this work for more than 5-10 photos, say 155,000 full res photos?
You’d be better off with some sort of cloud storage like iCloud or Google drive with that sort of volume.
I have cloud storage but I’m wanting to download full res photos onto an external hard drive. No one seems to do this. Why is this so complicated?!?!
Pete! Great info video for USB transfer from iPad! You totally Rock! I’ve been following you for five plus years starting with Garage Band videos! Have a prosperous 2024 down under!
Thanks so much my friend. Appreciate the kind words.
Is it possible to move over 7300 photos all at once I keep trying it always crashes or won’t let me do it and it’s a 2018 iPad Pro
Hey there. I would do this on smaller batches or zip up to transfer. I have had issues with transferring large volumes of files using USB drives.
Files app what files app? I can’t get iPad to show my pictures or select to move them.
I talked about this in today’s live show. ua-cam.com/video/bcACnhiUwBc/v-deo.html
(A speed of 0.5 Mb / s would already suit me very well)
Thank you very much and sorry for the long message
I would generally recommend using a cloud service to transfer files these days. Google Drive, iCloud Drive etc are generally much quicker.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Yes, I Know that Cloud services are pretty faster, but could you tell me if the speed depends on the adapter, the pendrive or in both?
(I ask because in the video and in other ones the transfer is still quite faster than mine)
I don't need so much speed, like 0,5Mb/s or even a little bit less would be ok
Thanks so much! I had no idea how to do this or where to look to see where my flash drive would show on my iphone. I did make the mistake of buying the standard Lightning to USB Camera Adapter with not charging port. Like you said, the USB takes power and it would't work until I bought the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter with the charging port, after that, everything worked fine.
Awesome! Very glad it helped my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
080322/0546h PST 🇺🇸 Greetings from California. Pete, thank you for the tip to DL the images from iPads/iPhones.
I saw your presentation only today and soon rushed to store for Sandisk 512 GB.
Rest is history. All the images in my devices were copied and retrieved about 25GB space..
No more Apple warning…. Until … thanks mate. Good day…
Nice one! Glad to hear it helped.
Nice video, but I’m finding the speeds very, very slow. Transferring a 1gb video files take many, many minutes.
Hey there my friend. Yes, I’m not a fan of this for larger files. I tend to use the WiFi Drive function of the AudioShare app which has much better speed. ua-cam.com/video/4oIejCXh1TQ/v-deo.html
not working transferring to Window PC
Bummer. Make sure you zip up any files that might be Apple specific. ua-cam.com/video/VtSNesKy-HE/v-deo.html
does this work without IOS 13?
No. USB drive support was added in iOS 13. You might need to explore something like this. ua-cam.com/video/Vk3pgwzW7jA/v-deo.html
Love you brother ❤️
Thanks my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos on the channel and consider subscribing if you haven’t already. 👍
Does it take ages to transfer to the flash drive. I have been trying all afternoon.
Yeah, it's not fast. I would use a could backup like iCloud or Google Drive these days.ua-cam.com/video/FVWVlGtK4rY/v-deo.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thank you for your advice.
Well done, Pete.
Cheers Chris. Thanks for watching. 👍
Sorry for the obvious stupid question but does this work on version 9. ?
iOS 9? No. Only iOS 13 and above. studiolivetoday.com/usb
@@PeteJohnsMusic :-(
hey can anyone pls tell me that can we transfer 1200 photos
You can transfer as many as you have, however it can take quite a while. I would separate them in to folders and perhaps copy in smaller batches.
And it also corrupted some files on my flash drive when the process turned into an error 😑 so don’t know what to do
I insert the flash but I can’t find it
Might not be powered? Check. Out the tips on the video and here. Http://studiolivetoday.com/usb
Big help! Thanks very much. Wish it were simpler to copy pics to laptop.
Yes it’s still not super easy is it?
Hey Pete
I bought the camera adapter the one shown in this video. I tried to connect it with my 2 TB hard drive to transfer photos however it’s not connecting. I did plug in the charging cable on the other port next to USB port, it charges the phone but not connecting with the usb. Also I can’t find the files app on iPhone. Do u have a video on how to access that? Sorry I’m not great with tech. Thank you
Hey there. A powered USB hub might help? Some USB drives use a lot of power and don’t work super well with iOS devices. ua-cam.com/video/iUJAVGHXnMs/v-deo.html
Thank you I will give that a go and how do I find the files app on iPhone please?
Does this work with an Ipad mini?
a Friend needs to save things and she has an ipad mini.
Hi there. Only if it is an iPad mini 4 which supports iOS 13 - ua-cam.com/video/U9FkeTt9dNc/v-deo.html

Good question? I believe so.
@@PeteJohnsMusic not to me
Hi Pete ,can you re-upload again the photo you transfer from I phone to USB drive to I phone .
You can copy it to the Files app but I don’t believe you can copy back to the photos app.
My flash drive doesn’t show up on my files whats wrong?!?!?!
Hey there. Are you using a genuine Apple Lightning to USB adapter, and plugging in to power as well? Some third party and non-genuine Apple adapters are not as reliable and don't tend to work. ua-cam.com/video/qt6ZczdUdV4/v-deo.html

It looks a little different on iPhone.
I downloaded a app for this but I will delete it I think
The Files app seems to work well for me.
Yeah I’m gonna use files app next time
How do you select all photos ?
Not sure you can? I tend to use cloud storage for photos these days. Google Photos is good.
So convoluted! why doesn't Apple have an integrated micro-SD card reader? Samsung is wayyyy ahead in that matter!!! Bad Apple!
It’s far from perfect isn’t it? If Android has better music production capability I’d likely consider it.
Brilliant, thank you!
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Hey Pete, I have one more doubt. Even the videos from iPhone can be transferred to USB Pendrive? Coz when I transfer videos from Mac to Pendrive it is getting saved as jpeg format😓😓please help me
That’s odd? I would recommend using iCloud Drive these days.
Dose it work for iPhone xr
Yup. Any iOS device running iOS 13 or above. studiolivetoday.com/iphone
Pete Johns thanks Pete! 🌹🌹🌹👍🏼👍🏼

why isn't the movie on my flashdrive that I transferred thru this adapter from my iPad not playing on my firestick?
Not sure sorry. Might not be a supported format? 🤷🏻♂️

So I’ve done this but when I open the photos in windows it shows “._image” and doesn’t allow me to open them. I’d there a fix to this? (Yes it’s converted to FAT32 as well. Thanks
Bummer. I tend to use things like Google Photos but hear days as I’ve had similar issues with the more modern file types in iOS.
Are you positive the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter is definitely a genuine Apple version? This is what happens with non genuine versions which is why I ask. studiolivetoday.com/usb
