Maybe Gibson USA will try a TV Yellow Theodore Jr. with a wraptail and a single P90, or, a single Staple AlNiCo 5 in the bridge position!
I’m sure the Mod Shop will have some eventually.
I could see a Theo version of this being like a limited low budget player with the SG elite pickguard. Maybein TV yellow. I'm trying to plan a Crestwood im my future if you're still interested in reviewing one.
@@charlesbolton8471 👍
Inverness green, Beale st. Blue, and a tulip burst.
Gotta be honest - I don’t hate it
That's a high bar
Right there with ya
Yeah but don’t like it either
The more I see it, the less I hate it. I think I’ll end up liking it- I can kind of tell.
Its definitely better than the futuristic flying v from a few years back
Without a pickguard on it the guitar looks like a giant Goldfish cracker!! 🤣
Add an eye 👁️ and there it is !
@@terryoquinn8199 Exactly 😂
I'm fine with them not doing the walnut stripe, despite it still being sad they removed it, but they should've kept the Alder body, 4 knobs dot inlay no binding fretboard..
Its a tiesco tulip
Yes being from the Netherlands It looks like a tulip to me.
I thought the same thing, maybe that's why I'm drawn to it. It resembles my old Teisco that I started out with long ago.
I think Ted was hittin' the sauce pretty hard the day he drew that up.
If this was Ted hitting the sauce with this design, what in hell was he on when thought a Flying V and an Explorer were the way ahead? LSD? 😄
@@OzziePete1bath salts
There’s a reason it wasn’t made back then
LOL!😅
The 57 classics sound really good.
That’s a good idea with the festive colours.🎸👍
With this one and a few other recent releases like modern lite and Beato, Gibson seems to be putting much needed focus on lighter weight options.
Now they should try a lighter hit to the wallet ! This is overpriced in my opinion .
The 57 Classic / Classic+ set is my favorite Gibson pickup set, so having those in this without having to pay to replace Burstbuckers or 490R/490T is excellent. That makes this guitar cheaper for me. I'm not buying one, but I wouldn't turn it down if it was a gift.
I do like the changes to the control layout. I prefer master tone and master volume, and wish more LPs had that layout. I know it's technically limited, but meh. Otherwise it'd just be a funny-looking SG.
I don’t understand why Gibson still insists on putting the 490R/490T combo in their guitars.
@@robjgolde3221whats wrong with them?
The pink mockup with the gold hardware and the cream parts looks VERY retro-fifties...love it! Such a guitar reminds me of the 50's-60's Gibson "Century 6" lap steel in the "Bittersweet" finish, which is a very cool coral-pink shade.
floral colors would be cool for sure. Modern light had a cool vibe like that other then it aint gloss.
I've got a black first run. Love it. I know the design is a love it/hate it thing, but it's a design that transcends genre; I can just as easily see this in metal/punk/country bands.
All it'll take will be a high-profile player taking one on and it'll become a success for Gibson.
The overall look of this guitar reminds me of a Tokai Talbo (although the design drawing must pre-date the Tokai). Usually I've been liking natural wood finishes but the suggestions of the pastel colors are neat and give it more of a retro and fun feel. It could have a bit of a Danelctro vibe to it. It sounded pretty good.
The Explorer style headstock is a bit 'pointy' which still suggests rock/metal to me. Or has that time now passed and are those types of headstocks now accepted more widely?
The Les Paul pickguard actually looked pretty good.
No pick guards .
I will buy one if/when they release a Gibson USA Special with p90's, dots, and a wraparound like the CS. Loved the look of the originals, these standards not so much.
If this had been a mini-humbucker instead of a humbucker I would have definitely pulled the trigger.
I was just thinking, maybe when an Epiphone version comes along! Fingers crossed.
Hear me out fellas....Firebird pickups?
@@squidgebert yes! Perfect!
Facts
The 57 Classic+/57 Classic combo is may be my favorite Gibson pickup set, with a Burstbucker 3/57 Classic being a close 2nd.
I'm guessing the rounded edges were extra machining & to keep costs down they compromised.... But I'd like to see a Theodore with completely rounded edges.
We all have our preferences and with an open book design like this is, we have no great preconceptions of how a Theodore is meant to be.
By 1957 Gibson were tooling up for humbuckers. I can imagine McCarty changing the original Theodore design to accommodate them very quickly - or offering Special and a Standard models (Special with P90s, Standard with Humbuckers). Also the change to Mahogany makes sense given Gibson had a ready supply of it as opposed to Alder, which may have been harder to source as Fender was in full production with Alder by then.
It's possible that design didn't go anywhere with Gibson in the '50s because the body shape was very similar to the Rickenbacker Combo 400. Gibson's designs were distinct from their competitors.
I'm fine with the pick guard.
I like the new shape, honestly. I love the look of these Theos.
Tulip guitar
Had a Montgomery Wards Teisco Tulip!
Rickenbacker had this shape in the 50s.
Somehow they didn't use "tulip" tuner buttons
It kind of reminds me of the Teisco "Tulip" model guitar. Either that or a semi-Rickenbacker type design. Of course, there was also Gibson's "Wally" model that came out later that year and.........
Is that a crack at the top side of the neck joint? Crack at 3:03
I love the sound of it. I think ebony board, tulip abalone inlays, i want a poker chip near the upper horn to control p90s and a chunky neck. I would also like a full maple body, why not? Or an M3 configured Theo
Pickguard could be les paul shaped but I think a better wing design may work, too. Sweet video
I was thinking a pickguard similar in style to the SG elites
have . Not a batwing just the partial swooping pickguard style that really covers littl real estate on the guitar . But theres also something like Epiphones Crestwood , Wilshire or Coronet models pickguard. Not exactly like them though. Speaking of im still considering getting a Crestwood if you're interested in reviewing it. I judt have to get with you and i think its Sweat Water that has them. Plus it might be another month or do before im ready. Maybe if there was acoil splitting options on this Theodore it may pull off Telecaster like tones. I was hoping youd give us a little acoustic run with it so we could if id does have a natural acoustic tone. I also thought that maybe they could paint these in some of the new colors they eent withbon Les Pauls. Or some translucent colors.
I didn’t like these when the Custom Shop model came out in 2022, but when I heard those, I changed my mind. The Custom version sounded really good in the demos I saw, with the P-90s and the wraparound bridge. I was initially disappointed when I saw these production versions with the 57 Classics, but darn, they sound good too! I’m slowly getting used to the shape-I still don’t love it, but it’s growing on me. The only design element I really don’t like is the Explorer headstock-I think a Flying V headstock would look better, but Ted McCarty’s original sketch had the Explorer headstock, so they might ss well stick with it. It’ll be interesting to see how many of these they’ll sell. Looks-wise I’d rather have an SG.
I like it! And I hated the custom shop versions, it’s a lot more versatile, I can experiment with different pickups and I won’t get that P90 hum and I like the addition of the stop bar tailpiece, baseball bat necks suck, also no pickguard looks best. Home run imo
Thanks Trogly. Really like the idea of the pastel colors and the option of "standard" style model. Peace
So it looked way cooler and rock n' roll in your hands than it did on the table/hanging. It's still cool, but the intrigue of the specs of the custom shop intrigue me more. I just wish they did the 2-vol 2-tone on the USA as well.
I like it. I wish they would have went with the p90 pickups though. But the 57 set is one of my favorites
Me too 👍
Bringing it with that festive colours sure match the shape vibe, and will draw more players for it, since it already modernize with modern tailpiece rather than wrap around bridge and humbuckers.
I just don't get it why they simplify that control knobs? I would love to have diffrent tone knobs for each pickups to set the sound on my amps
I love my original Custom version. The body shape is a truss rod cover shape.
pink: since day one of the original release i have thought the Theodore would be awesome if it came in a variety of hot colors. since it's a solid slab i'd think it could come in a variety of pickup configurations as well. ultimately i'd think the Theodore could be huge if Gibson would promote it and get them into famous-named stars' hands. they're so cool.
What's going on with the neck-to-body joint on the Custom Shop version? At 3:26, it looks like there's - at worst - a filler piece between the body and the neck heel, or at best, a bad stain line.
Absolutely LOVE the way these things sound! Great demo, Trogs!
Also, since these are slightly thicker than an sg, do you think it would be easier to get one with a Floyd Rose? I bet that would be awesome!
I might be interested in a Theodore bfg.
Next they can make a Theodore Jr., with 1 pickup. Then a Special with the humbucker and a p-90 or 94. Then they could get really ballsy and do a Custom with 3 pickups. Just like the Les Paul and the SG family. Honestly, I was unimpressed with the outrageously priced Custom shop model. This one, at its price point, is MUCH more attractive and desirable.
i love the tulips idea
It's nice to have another Gibson offering with an inline headstock.
Signature models with various combinations of bodies and inline/trapezoidal headstocks seem like they should be popular.
Also, options for inline and trapezoidal headstocks that have a more traditional Gibson motif, so they look nice on older jazz models.
The traditional Gibson motif is a kind of utilitarian American Gothic design. Maybe a bit boring and chunky, but sturdy.
Also, the traditional motif dresses up nice with bindings and inlays!
It's a great look, though, works for all kinds of genres!
The headstock isn't the defining feature of the guitar. Moving the pegs around should be a standard option just like different pickups or bridge hardware. Different instrumentalists prefer 3+3/inline/reverse inline, it's a legitimate part of the playing technique. My 2 cents.
A Theodore Jr would be pretty cool. Wraparound and P90.
The Custom version seems nicer.
It's intriguing . . . also don't hate it! 😅The floral colours idea is a good 'un! The retro look with cream appointments fun, aven in a 'Special' model - skip the neck binding etc. - I do think this could take off with a younger market who reject the classic LP / SG look because to them it's 'dated'.
So . . . let's also see what Epiphone come up with!
I love these. I would prefer to see them make a Special, closer to the original run, but if it takes off well enough they might do it.
I like it its a cool guitar. Of course I like the original one with P-90s and wanut stripe more. Love the middle position sounds on this one. It'd be nice if they offered it in a P-90 model as well. Great review!
I want this Explorer head for my Les Paul lol.
The '80's Les Paul XPL had the Explorer headstock. Super cool, IMO.
I dig it. If it could balance well, this could be a cool shape for a bass. Gibson hasn’t had a hit bass guitar in a long time.
I love it. I love the name and the flower shape (yes I am a man, a guitarist, and I do enjoy flowers tbh) but BUT there are a few other Gibson’s on my bucket list. But if I had the cash, I’d grab this instantly. To me this is the for the guy who has what he wants from Gibson, and he buys this for the story/history.
I still prefer the Custom Shop version, but not the price. I was disappointed that the USA version was so different. I'd be more OK with the USA version if it had P90 pups and the wrap tailpiece.
I like is it's a little brighter than the custom and the chrome covers on the humbukers really stand out I like the one volume one tone
Love the idea of P90/Humbucker combos in more of the Gibson line.
Like it, neck pup sounds great, bridge a bit too hot for me. Looks a fun and modern guitar even though it's from the 50s. A 3 pup version with a Bigby maybe? ❤
You have a couple of good ideas there, Austin. The brighter floral colors would allow these guitars a unique appearance, while the BFG-style pickup configuration would give the axe a rare sound. Could be that the combination of features would prove compelling to many players!
I really hope we get a single cut version one day id love to see one as a one off run
If I were Gibson, I'd gone the extra mile to make the Theodore more unique.
From the drawing the choice of headstock shape and control layout is spot on. However, it looks like mini humbuckers to me, maybe staple pickups.
Regarding the centre stripe, why not make it a neck-thru model? Rickenbacker had been doing it for a couple of years at the time, so why not make it a korina-guitar with a 3-piece limba-mahogany-limba neck? Keeping it with the korina models, it could also have come with gold hardware.
It'd still be a mostly traditional Gibson, but it would at least be unique, rather than a reshaped SG
When bad becomes worse 😂
Love the Theodore!!
The CS is closer to the mark, imo.
that's the one for me. The body shaping is what really makes my decision.
I still wish they would have gotten close to the sketch, and hope the do with a future version.
As for the standard, I agree with your idea that it should have a large-guard that matches the body shape, SG-style.
Personally I think ALL guitars should, just good design.
I've never been a fan of Les Paul pickguards, they are the one thing that hold the design back and make them look antiquated.
Always no guard for LP's for me, and (I know this is controversial) I prefer The Heritage pickguard over the Gibson design, it fits the body better if you MUST have a pickguard.
I'm definitely digging the vibe... looks like a slide machine to me sir...🎸🎹🔥
I own a Custy Theo and a Standard. I love them both
To me it just looks like they have a standard 2HB stop bar template and change the shape a bit. It’s not very interesting TBH. Maybe there aren’t any new shapes out there and they’ve played with the electronics in the past but Gibson are stuck in the 50s.
Just picked one up… it’s amazing don’t shit on it till you play it
That would make a cool bass design also
Anything you do to a Theodore makes it better. Flower colors, do a BFT barely finished Theodore or a T2 like the v2and e2, anything. I actually really liked the sound of it
Z is for late. Interesting body style. There is a tulip joke somewhere lurking?
Why do you always say z is for late? What does it mean?
@@We-all-watched-the-video he doesn't say that if he is one of the first commenters on a trogly video. I've lurked around here long enough to have the same question as yourself, haha. Just sharing an observation, I have no idea why he uses Z, other than it's the last letter in the alphabet lol. I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with Putin and Russia, though.
That’s way more than I ever paid for two lips 👄 before .
Yeah, "do you like flowers Pet?".... lmao
@We-all-watched-the-video yeah late starts with L right? I don't get it either, dumb lol
what song is the riff from 15:14???
It sounds familiar but I don't know what it is, I'd like to know as well haha
Colours......works for me.....Great idea......inspired observation
I WISH they’d do this with a Les Paul: thin mahogany body, natural finish, two humbuckers with just two knobs, TOM bridge + tailpiece, and a regular neck. The headstock I’m fine with either this one or the 3x3. I’d buy that in a heartbeat!
I like it better than the Custom shop model and that's the color I like its a unique guitar for something different 👏👍🤘
He said CHATOYANT I'm goin' to Moe's
Trog stole that term from HK guitar
I love Les Pauls, SG’s and my absolute favorite Firebirds. This is just……. Wow not for me. I’m sure someone finds it beautiful.
I wish they kept the p-90’s and wraparound bridge on these. Could have been a quirky alternative to the LP Special.
reminds me of my first guitar. Tiesco Del Rey Tulip.
I'd like the USA neck on the CS body. Also have a Hum/ P-90 combination. Then it would be perfect to me.
Leo scala did make a theodore with a p90 in neck, a Humbucker in bridge and a new pickguard shape
I like it it reminds me of my 60’s Teisco del Rey tulip
Evening all!! Not sure how I feel about this. I probably have to see it in person and try one.
The shape of that is very much like an old idk tiesco? Im sure of the make and model
Personally pokey upper horns usually stab me in the soroplexus
Like the pick guard on the drawing u showed better that what is on this guitar
"Do you like flowers pet?".... lmao
Nice sound !!
Just wanted to share that in case you do want to add the additional volume and tone, CTS does make the smaller diameter 500k pots that will fit in those cavities
Man, I'd like one of the Specials, but with the Standard control layout!
Loving mine! Thought I’d hate it.
We should be appreciative of Gibson releasing a whole new design when the majority of us guitarists still only ask them to churn out Les Pauls issue after Les Paul reissue as is we were stuck in the 60s. So I really lile it and hope it will be well-received from the guitarist community. Cheers!
It's not the craziest Gibson shape. Remember the Moderne, or the RD. I think this guitar would have really been up my alley with Deluxe-style minihum pickups.
They include a copy of the original drawing from the archive, so you can see they didn't even follow the drawing...
I like ‘57 classics, but I’d prefer the P-90’s on this model.
I didn’t really like them at first, but they’ve grown on me.
I like this guitar. Thanks for sharing.
I really like how it sounded. Chimey and gritty. And it sports the best looking headstock in the world of guitars.
I think the epiphone wilshire pro pickguard would look good on it
Im GASing for a USA model over the CS which is odd for me. The neck does it. Hell, even the headstock on the USA has MOP vs the CS's silk screen.
CS is pearl but with a tinted clear coat to look yellowed
@@Trog oh ok! I was a bit surprised to think the CS would've just silk screened the logo.
I would like a Theodore with mini humbuckers, or a Theodore with a 57plus in the bridge and a firebirdbucker in the neck in see through fuchsia.
This comes off as a prototype SG to me
The custom shop neck profile is based on a scan of Big Ed btw! (Modified to remove the thumb divot same as the 58 korina explorer)
I would buy one in that Pink or Surf Greenish color. Definitely needs better looking knobs, I don't like the plain black plastic ones.
I think they are pretty neat. And normally I like bright bold colours, but black is the way I’d go with one of these
This might suit a double pick guard to create a butterfly on the flower. The les paul one.
What a cool video glad to be first here! great guitar will the limited edition loose value?
I think it looks pretty cool with NO pickguard, I really dig the whole look and vibe of this guitar.
I think it would be cool if Gibson offered it with a strat style bridge and in the tulip colours.
Glad Gibson did this version!
I was never a gibson guy, but your channel has had me wanting my first LP for month, but now I'm thinking I'll start here... especially if they do those pastel colors.
